This year saw a relatively new committee take on the daunting task of organising the 2013 Stowmarket Carnival. With very little left in the reserve fund; sponsorship and fundraising were going to prove imperative if the event were to go ahead.

A target of £4000 was set and a calender of events was quickly put into place with friends of the committee all rallying to ensure the target was met. Steve

headed up sponsorship and with the help of the local press and BBC Radio Suffolk the committee got the boost they needed of financial support and assistance with lorries for the procession from Norbert Dentressangle. A package was put together to take the carnival forward as a charity, in the hope of safeguarding its future and future boosting donations and support from businesses.

To date (May 2013) the fundraising total stands at £3672.00 we have had a pamper night, cash bingo, quizzes, the first snow in stow competition, chocolate bingo, raffled a wheelbarrow full of booze and even had an egg hunt amongst other stalls and tombolas. I thank those who have attended any one of these events.

at £3550 and I thank the businesses who have got involved and given some of their money and time to make this a great day for the people of the Town and beyond.

The theme this year is’ it’s Showtime' and I look forward to the procession efforts of the groups involved. I would also encourage the Towns people to embrace the theme with a giveaway of 100 prizes on the Saturday with the most impressive themed outfits, as chosen by our carnival princesses.

I would also like to add the carnival is not paid for by any of the councils, it’s self funded, you help fund your carnival when you pay on the gates. Without your support the carnival will not continue and it will fade as a memory of something that

Stowmarkets first all encompassing Dog Training and Canine Sports Facilitators.

This year the class members and sports teams get to strut their stuff during the carnival procession on Saturday 20th July with their four legged friends in tow.

During Sunday July 21st we will be offering 'Have a Go' Flyball on the Recreation Ground. With stimulation and exercise being the order of the day, Flyball is all about the speed.

Our canine sports courses operate on Mondays at Stowmarket Sports and Social Club. Enquiries please call Lorraine 01449 616615.

It’s the start of the Stowmarket Carnival event and this year kicks off at 9am on July 8th.

We have around 50 retailers involved this year and entry to you the public is FREE. Pick up a form at the participating shops and go and spot!

Prizes are: 1st £35 2nd £25 3rd £10 Last entry on Saturday 20th July at 5.30pm and winners will be notified after this date.

The carnival committee would like to thank Jean Squires for organising the event and all participating retailers.

There will be a selection of hot and cold food and drinks to buy across the Carnival weekend to suit all tastes.

There will be Aberdeen Angus Burgers, Hot Dogs, Burgers, German Sausages, Pizza, Oriental Food, Vegetarian, Fish ‘n’ Chips, Doughnuts and Waffles on a Stick.

There will be plenty of drink on sale including Slush Puppies, Fizzy Drinks, Tea, Coffee and Alcohol.

Country Markets will be selling a Selection of Sandwiches, Sausage Rolls and other food in the craft tent.

Mid Suffolk Car Show Charity Stalls As we are members of East Anglian Practical Classics (EAPC) we approached the club committee for the club to offer it’s support to the event; which they happily agreed.

There will be Classic cars of all ages and styles, various classic and car club stands inc EAPC, Bury Mini Club, Bury Retro Club, Suffolk Capri Club, Piston Heads, Kit cars, etc.

We will also be holding a competition for the Cars on display for which there will be trophies kindly donated

by W.Simpson Toy Shop of Stowmarket. This will be held in memory of the late Jack Gale who was a founder member of EAPC and there will be a collection for Cancer Research.

The Show will be held on the Recreation Ground, Stowmarket and entrance for exhibitors is FREE and entry is from 07:30am with the show opening to the public at 10am through to 3pm.

The charity stalls form a very important part of Stowmarket Carnival and we have the support of these people in helping us man the gates on carnival day! The stalls are free of charge to enter on the recreation ground and have a range of items for sale, adding to the excitement and variety of the day. In 2011 the charity stalls raised over £2,000 and this adds to a wonderful community feel for Stowmarket The carnival committee would like to thank the charities involved for their continued support.

Proms In The Park

The Churches Together service this year will be slightly different. We will be finishing the Carnival with a “Last Night of the Proms” type service, featuring the Salvation Army band and songsters, together with other local performers. It promises to be a great evening so dust off your Union Jack flags, get your picnic blanket out and be prepared to sing!

Unfortunately due to the cancellation of Carnival 2012 no income was received on the gates. Expenditure was already committed to and as a result there was a large deficit last year. This has resulted in the rainy day fund having to be used – our aim over the next few years is to build this up again.

Our priority for this year was to raise enough money to cover the expenditure required to enable the Carnival to go ahead in 2013 which we have successfully done. This was done with a combination of sponsorship and fundraising.

Start The Procession The procession is the heart of the Stowmarket Carnival and this year has been a fight to allow it to continue.

The recommendation by the Police of a traffic management company, and assisted costings, together with road closures, a residents consultation and the increasing difficulty of groups and hauliers being able to obtain and insure the lorries meant this year would be tough. The committee could not take the procession away

and it was decided the roads would still be closed and a procession would go ahead even if it meant more walking exhibits and standard vehicles, the show had to go on.

After a plea on BBC radio Suffolk a lifeline was thrown to the committee by Norbert Dentressangle. This amazing donation of 10 lorries, fully insured and ready to go and money to cover road closures and signage was a gift never before seen by any committee. This generosity

For this year’s carnival it was apparent that with the remaining fund, fund raising alone was not going to bring in the much needed revenue to run this years carnival.

Therefore we decided to take a new tact by compiling sponsorship packages sticking with our theme “It’s Showtime”.

Packages were created and offered to local businesses to purchase to help build the revenue as well as offer them an opportunity to show case their business and products to the community of Stowmarket and surrounding areas.

Vindis Skoda in Bury St Edmunds quickly came on board purchasing a package as well as providing the vehicles for our Carnival Queen and Princesses.

However, following a radio interview from our chair Zoe Lynch we were then approached

by Norbert Dentressangle in Stowmarket.

Following a meeting with Norbert Dentressangle they without doubt became our biggest supporter for this years carnival with their kind generosity of 10 vehicles along with trailers for the procession.

The estimated cost for the equipment alone is well in excess of a million pounds, with their generosity this has not only funded the procession in full but in addition to this they have also covered the costs required for the road closures on the day for the procession. Norbert Dentressangle have provided us with the stage for our bands

and the much needed volunteers from the business, their support has been fantastic and we hope this will be an on going partnership for years to come.

As you can imagine the support from Norbert Dentressangle was fantastic news for the Stowmarket Carnival Committee however we received some further news that Akzo Nobel the largest global paints and coatings company would also like to support the carnival.

Akzo Nobel very generously donated £1,500.00 to the Stowmarket Carnival and this donation has covered the cost of the entertainment in full, along with this they have donated an amazing prize about which you can find more details in the centre pages.

For the coming year we will be looking to offer packages again and hope to have the continuous support from the businesses that have generously supported us this year as well as welcoming new businesses.

My name is Sian Copeman and I am delighted to have the opportunity to be Stowmarket’s Carnival Queen 2013. When I’m not performing my regal duties, you will usually find me involved in a number of hobbies and interests; including art, writing, archery and happiness. I live and work in this highly underrated town – excitingly having recently started a new job with the Town Council – and couldn’t ask for a better place to call home. As a young person who is passionate about her town, people and charity, this is certainly a role I will enjoy over the coming year.
