NOTES FROM Stonyhurst

From the Senior Deputy Head

Dear Stonyhurst Families

It has been an absolutely great first week back. We have loved welcoming back the pupils for the second half of term. We have had some really lovely autumn colours and crisp days amidst the typical Lancashire downpours. Luckily, the weather held off for our All Saints Fireworks. The boarders headed out to watch these before heading back in to studies.

Speaking of studies, it is wonderful that now the Historic Libraries are open for study on a Monday and Tuesday evening so that Higher Line may be inspired by one of most wonderful intellectual environments.

Syntax are about to begin their journey into Higher Line. This will begin with their assessment week and then they will begin to select options and then have their Mocks and interviews. It is a very exciting time for them but inevitably there are some nerves.

The new Art and Design department is nearing completion so please look out for news of its formal opening in January.

We are looking forward to Remembrance Sunday in Hurst Green on Sunday, followed by Private Peaceful and LG Parents' weekend in a couple of weeks' time. After this we will have Figures Parents' weekend and the Carol Service. Please do note the dates. There is a small number of tickets remaining for the Winter Ball. I do hope you can join us at Stonyhurst soon.

All best Wishes

A Sparkling Evening to Remember

On Wednesday, our pupils enjoyed a beautiful firework display that lit up the night sky in a dazzling array of colours. The evening was filled with excitement and laughter as everyone gathered together to watch the spectacular show. Alongside the fireworks, pupils warmed up with delicious hot chocolates and enjoyed a variety of treats. It was a wonderful event that brought our school community together and created memories that will be cherished for a long time.

Poppy Appeal

A huge well done to Ron, who has spent the day at Sainsbury’s selling poppies for the Royal British Legion - almost single-handedly!

Ron’s commitment, generosity of spirit and sense of duty truly reflect what it means to be a man for others. His actions embody the Jesuit values we strive to live out each day at Stonyhurst - service, compassion and dedication to the wider community.

Lower Grammar Playroom Presents Private peaceful

This year we are Celebrating 125 years of CCF at Stonyhurst and so it felt fitting that we also acknowledge and celebrate this in out thriving drama department

Step into the world of Private Peaceful, a moving and unforgettable stage adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s acclaimed novel. Following the story of young Tommo Peaceful, the play takes audiences on a journey from the innocence of childhood in rural England to the harrowing battlefields of the First World War.

Told with honesty, humour, and heartbreaking poignancy, Private Peaceful is both a powerful coming-of-age story and a searing reminder of the human cost of war.

Stonyhurst Next Innings –

Fundraising

for the Stonyhurst Cricket Pavilion

The Stonyhurst Cricket Pavilion has been a beacon on the Stonyhurst Estate for over 130 years. It is the focal point for key events; it stands up to the incoming snow from Pendle Hill and provides welcome shelter against the Ribble Valley weather. It continues to play a part in key Stonyhurst moments for pupils, OS and staff.

After generations of cricketers using the Pavilion, suffering the piercing grip of boot spikes, and standing strong against the Ribble Valley weather, we were planning to refurbish the Pavilion. However, last summer, the need became more urgent as it suffered two arson attacks – seeing smoke coming out of its beautiful windows was heart wrenching to say the least. It is thanks to the quick action of the Lancashire Fire Brigade that the building was saved and that we can restore it to its former glory for future generations of cricketers to walk those steps and take to the field.

If you would like to support this fundraising initiative, we would be most grateful. Please contact the Development Office or visit our web page here.

Stonyhurst Sport

A Strong Week Across Stonyhurst Sport

Our Senior First Team and U14s both claimed hockey victories, while the 1st XV defeated Sedbergh’s 2nd XV 31–26 in a superb rugby performance.

In tennis, Annabel won the Girls’ U16s title and was runner-up in the U18s at the national Birchwood Open Grade 3.

Netball saw the U19s progress in the Sisters in Sport Bowl and the U15s edge a 39–37 golden goal win over Kirkham, with Indie named Player of the Match.

Outstanding results across every team.
