NOTES FROM Stonyhurst

From the Senior Deputy Head

Dear Stonyhurst Families

Pupil Voice is so important to our community. I have been delighted by the efficacy of the Pupil Council and how their careful thoughtfulness affects real change within the school community. Examples of changes recently implemented include extended use of the Historic Libraries, changes to the social event calendar and changes to catering provision. Every governors' meeting.

Campion Day is on Monday and we are very excited to have a day at the beginning of December to pause and reflect on St Edmund Campion and to begin the season of Advent. The day will be one of spiritual retreat. It will begin with Mass and it will end with the famous Lip Sync battle.

Figures Parents' Weekend is the final weekend of term and we cannot wait to welcome many of the families of our youngest pupils.

We are greatly looking forward to the Christmas festivities and hope many of our families will be able to come to the Carol Service at the end of term.

With very best wishes

Festive STEAM In Action

Pupils have spent the day designing, laser-cutting and hand-finishing their own Christmas baubles, ready to sell at Monday’s Rhetoric Fair in support of Jesuit Missions.

They’re limited-edition and we don’t think they’ll be around for long!

Stonyhurst Christmas Cards

The Stonyhurst Christmas Cards are now available.

This year’s design is, Frontispiece Floriated Ornament, by Augustus Welby Pugin, printed in London in 1849. This first edition is part of the architectural section of the Bay Library, Stonyhurst College, a research centre for the Stonyhurst Philosophers. These were undergraduates who studied at Stonyhurst and took their degrees through the University of London between the years of 1840 and 1916.

Cards are in packs of 10 and cost £7.50 plus postage, and can be purchased here.

Stonyhurst Next Innings –

Fundraising

for the Stonyhurst Cricket Pavilion

The Stonyhurst Cricket Pavilion has been a beacon on the Stonyhurst Estate for over 130 years. It is the focal point for key events; it stands up to the incoming snow from Pendle Hill and provides welcome shelter against the Ribble Valley weather. It continues to play a part in key Stonyhurst moments for pupils, OS and staff.

After generations of cricketers using the Pavilion, suffering the piercing grip of boot spikes, and standing strong against the Ribble Valley weather, we were planning to refurbish the Pavilion. However, last summer, the need became more urgent as it suffered two arson attacks – seeing smoke coming out of its beautiful windows was heart wrenching to say the least. It is thanks to the quick action of the Lancashire Fire Brigade that the building was saved and that we can restore it to its former glory for future generations of cricketers to walk those steps and take to the field.

If you would like to support this fundraising initiative, we would be most grateful. Please contact the Development Office or visit our web page here.
