NOTES FROM Stonyhurst

From the Senior Deputy Head

Dear Stonyhurst Families

Quite often here we say 'only at Stonyhurst' to describe those moments which perfectly capture the idiosyncrasies of our wonderful school. Modernity meets tradition every day across our campus in unusual and interesting ways. Today's 'only at Stonyhurst' moment was captured as I walked across the front quad this afternoon. A group of smartly-suited Poets were excitedly rushing towards a gig by the pop group called XO at the same time as a Chopin Nocturne was being expertly played in the Top Ref. Yesterday, clay pigeon shooting, fishing, outdoor pursuits, revision, play rehearsals and CCF manoeuvres all took place at the same time before the pupils reverted to their 'normal' period 7

The line competitions, sports matches and events have all picked up pace as we have settled back into the full rhythm of the school year. It is a key moment each Monday in Assembly when we hear the results and celebrate (or commiserate) together as a whole school body. This week in Assembly we focused on the importance of pupil voice, and its role in changing Stonyhurst for the better. The assembly is almost entirely run by Rhetoric, who are excellent ambassadors and role models within the school. The pupils looked back at many of the innovations that have stemmed from pupil voice and asked for applications for pupil council We received an astonishing number of applications and will hold the first Pupil Council with the new council next week.

We are delighted to welcome back OS85 this weekend and we are looking forward greatly to welcoming Rhetoric families back the following weekend for their parents’ conference

Have a wonderful weekend,

Meet Our Heads of Line

At the start of the new school year, our Heads of Line, Ludwig and Hattie, delivered their annual speeches to all College pupils during the Headmaster’s assembly. Both took the opportunity to offer valuable advice to help everyone make the most of the year ahead.

On Monday we are looking forward to hearing from Deputy Heads of Line Morgan and Clare.

My first piece of advice to all of you is to be kind. Kindness here at Stonyhurst is not only about being polite but about becoming “Men and Women for others”. A phrase which is very central to our Jesuit Education as it means we are called to look beyond ourselves, to show compassion and to use our talents in the service of others every day. Every act of kindness, whether it is making someone new feel welcome, helping a classmate or showing respect to staff is a step towards becoming a person who makes Stonyhurst a better place.

My second piece of advice is: To Get Involved. Stonyhurst is a school like no other with so many activities to take part in so it’s no wonder that our school motto is “Quant Je Puis”. As Much as I Can. Take part in all the College has to offer whether it is a sport you really wanted to try out, an instrument you never played before or taking part in one of Stonyhurst drama production. Thank you to Hattie for mentioned the Jesuit Pupil Profile which reminds us to be active- to use our gifts rather than hide them

My third piece of advice to you is: don’t be afraid to ask for help. Starting off at a new school, for some even in a new country, can be challenging at times and nobody is expecting you to get everything right the first time. Therefore, it is normal and necessary to ask for help and if you need any, you can always speak to your houseparent's, teachers, other members of staff but also to Hattie or myself. As Mr Brown mentioned previously, every teacher and staff member is here to help you on your journey so I would recommend really making use of that.

I really hope that these tips were useful to you and thank you very much for your time

Firstly, be grateful for all the amazing opportunities we are given here and do not take them for granted. Show generosity by embracing new experiences and helping those around you to do the same. The best way to do this is by engaging with cocurricular and not being afraid to try new things!

Secondly, approach your studies with a curious attitude and an attentive mindset, so to always be ready and open to learning This virtue is important inside and outside of the classroom. So, I advise that you foster a curious mind in all areas of school life and apply an inquisitive spirit to all that you do.

My final piece of advice is to be intentional and discerning in how you use and plan your time. Organisation is so important so you can effectively balance schoolwork and cocurricular. This becomes increasingly important as you travel up the school and it truly makes all the difference in exam years.

I hope my advice may ensure you make the most out of your time here and have the best possible experience! These Jesuit Profile Virtues have helped to guide my time at Stonyhurst and I hope that they may support your growth here too, so we may go forth to set the world on fire.

Not your average assembly

Stonyhurst College pupils were treated to an unforgettable visit from girl band XO.

The day included a private concert and a powerful PSHE talk, where XO shared their advice on self-belief, staying true to yourself, and the importance of affirmations

Thank you, XO, for giving our pupils an experience they will never forget.

Interline

This week’s Interline was all about football and basketball - well done to everyone involved!

You all did your lines proud.

IB Business Management New Poets Debate

Our new Poets to the IB Business Management course debated this week who should belong on our Entrepreneur Hall of Fame board.

Each Poet researched an entrepreneur of their choice identifying specific qualities that made them successful. Then, in a ‘Speed Dating’ style of discussion, they had 2 minutes to argue why they deserved a place

The winning entrepreneur was Aliko Dangote, founder of the Dangote Group the largest industrial conglomerate in Africa. He was successfully argued by Johann who won the vote.

Lower Line Assembly

Stonyhurst Fair

This past Sunday, the College grounds were transformed into a buzzing hub of excitement, laughter, and community spirit as pupils, and staff gathered for the College Fair

Highlights of the day included a Mechanical Bull that drew brave challengers and plenty of spectators, all eager to see who could hold on the longest. It quickly became a crowd favourite.

Of course, no fair is complete without food, and the BBQ didn’t disappoint. Nearby, a wide variety of classic games and competitions kept pupils entertained throughout the afternoon.

Perhaps the most talked-about feature of the day was the legendary tuck shop, stocked with everyone’s favourite treats. The College Fair wasn’t just a fun day out it was a celebration of community, energy, and the spirit that makes our school so unique. With smiles all around and memories made, it’s safe to say: Sunday was done absolutely right.

Longridge Soap Box Derby

Rainy skies couldn’t dampen the fun! Our students had a fantastic time at the Longridge Soap Box Derby - cheering on the racers, exploring the stalls, and soaking up the atmosphere
