Stonehill Updates

01. New Priest Assignment

It is with great joy and anticipation that we announce that Fr. Gabriel Oduro Mensah has been assigned by the Archdiocese of Dubuque as a Sacramental Priest at Stonehill Communities and MercyOne. This official appointment of duties begins on July 8th. At Stonehill Communities he will be offering Masses, Anointing of the Sick, Reconciliation, supporting our Pastoral Services team and participating in other faith-based activities at the Health Center, Assisi Village, and Windsor Park.

Fr. Gabriel previously served at the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier, Dyersville; St. Joseph Parish, Earlville; St. Boniface Parish, New Vienna; SS. Peter & Paul Parish, Petersburg; and St. Paul Parish, Worthington.

02. Resident/Member Surveys

Residents, family members, Wellness Center members, and home care clients all recently received surveys asking for feedback on their satisfaction with our services, environment, and staff. We appreciate this opportunity to improve our service and hospitality.

We are proud to report that 97% of our Health Center residents, 93% of our home care clients, and 97% of of our post-actue residents would recommend Stonehill to others needing a similar level of care, and 98% of our Wellness Centers would recommend the Center to others!

03. Employee Appreciation and Award Nominations

In July, we will celebrate our exceptional team for their dedication, hard work and compassion. During Employee Appreciation Week, July 28-Aug 1, we would like to share notes of appreciation from residents, members, patients, caregivers, and family. These notes are powerful reminders of why our work matters and the impact we have each and every day. We invite you to share your note of appreciation at www.stonehilldbq.com/employeeappreciation.

We are also accepting nominations for two special awards: The Spirit of St. Francis Award and the Sunshine Award. These will be presented during Employee Appreciation Week.

The Spirit of St. Francis Award recognizes an employee who consistently demonstrates our Franciscan values of compassion, hospitality, stewardship, and reverence in their daily work whether it is with residents, coworkers, visitors, volunteers, or community partners. This person understands how these values form our culture and is a living example of the spirit of our ministry.

The Sunshine Award recognizes a Stonehill team member who has a kind and positive attitude that helps brighten the days of coworkers, residents, and visitors. They enhance our team culture with their friendliness, respect, and joyful spirit.

Nominations for these awards can also be made via our website at www.stonehilldbq.com/ employeeappreciation.

GUIDE

Stonehill will offer a new Medicare program for individuals living with dementia beginning July 1. The GUIDE (Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience) Program will provide support and case management for individuals with a dementia diagnosis who are living at home. The goals of the program are to improve the quality of life for both people with dementia and their unpaid caregivers and to help people with dementia to remain safely in their homes for longer by preventing or delaying the need for nursing home care. A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful volunteers who dedicated their time and effort to cleaning out the flower gardens and chicken coop. Your hard work is deeply appreciated, and we look forward to spending this summer together in such a vibrant and welcoming space.

Residents will have the chance to spend their free time tending to their gardens in the raised, handicap-accessible flower beds. These beds are designed to enable residents to garden independently. We invite you to join your loved one in this fulfilling experience.

Student-Led Physical Therapy Program at Assisi Village: Connecting Generations for Health and Wellness

For the past 15 years, Clarke University’s physical therapy students have been making a meaningful impact on the lives of residents at Assisi Village. Under the guidance of Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy Mindy Oxenford, this innovative program pairs second-year physical therapy (PT) students with first-year students as they provide physical therapy services on-site at Assisi Village. The program fosters a unique mentorship connection that benefits both the students and residents.

The 3-month program focuses on a variety of health aspects that are particularly relevant to older adults. Residents participate in weekly exercises to improve balance, strength, mobility, and flexibility, which are key for reducing fall risks—a significant concern for the senior population. This programming is provided at no cost to the residents, which is especially helpful for those who may not qualify for physical therapy services under Medicare.

The positive feedback from residents highlights the program’s effectiveness. Many have reported learning new techniques that not only enhance their physical capabilities but also contribute to their overall quality of life. Jim Hansen shared, “The student I’m working with is a first year student and she’s doing a great job. She is very knowledgeable, and she is showing me different strength and stretching exercises that are helping me. She even printed some exercises for me to practice during the week. It’s a nice program.” Mary Feltes agrees. They are helping her with a variety of exercises that are helping her get stronger after a recent surgery.

For the students, the program is more than just a clinical experience; it’s a chance to connect with the community and learn from the stories of the residents. Students like Carissa Elskamp and Anna Voigt have shared that working with the residents is incredibly rewarding. They value the opportunity to see firsthand the impact of physical therapy on individuals’ lives, stating that it allows them to implement classroom knowledge in a practical setting. Carissa noted, “I love working with the residents! Helping and working with them is the highlight of my day. It even puts me in a better mood.”

We are so grateful for this partnership. It is an incredible benefit, enriching the lives of both students and residents.

Therapy Department

Therapy is an integral part of the care provided at Stonehill Communities. Therapists work in both inpatient and outpatient settings to promote the wellness of residents and community members. Since 2009, when Stonehill added Post-Acute Care and therapy to its continuum of services, our therapy services at Stonehill have been provided through partnerships with 3rd party companies. We are excited to announce that as of July 1, our Therapy Department will be an official part of the Stonehill team! We are thrilled to welcome them and bring these services in house!

This change will result in a more cohesive interdisciplinary team, improved communication, and additional coordination of services across our continuum. As our home and community-based services continue to grow to meet community needs, therapy staff will be an important aspect of a variety of wellness programs.

The services available to residents and outpatient community members are expected to remain the same. The Therapy team will offer physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy in the Outpatient Clinic, the Health Center, Assisi Village, and Windsor Park. Rachel McDermott, Director of Health and Wellness, will oversee the Therapy Department.

For more information on Outpatient Therapy options, referrals, and insurance coverage please call the Outpatient Clinic at 563.690.9637.

The Caregiver Resource Center will be working closely with our GUIDE Care Navigator, Beth LaGreek, to prepare for GUIDE services and to support caregivers and their care receiver with dementia. Whether it’s identifying needs at home through supportive services, support groups, education, self-care, or resources, we’re honored to support future GUIDE participants. In preparation for GUIDE, we’d like to highlight our new and ongoing dementia-related programming!

Lewy Body & Frontotemporal Dementia Caregiver Support Group

Caregivers supporting persons with Lewy Body, Frontotemporal Dementia, and Parkinson’s face challenges that differ from other forms of dementia, so we are starting a specialized support group. This group will be co-facilitated by Taylor Hummer, Community Resource Coordinator, and volunteer, Jackie Weeber who has personal experience caring for and supporting loved ones with Lewy Body Dementia as well as other forms of dementia and chronic illnesses. This group will meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 4pm – 5pm at the Caregiver Resource Center. RSVP is encouraged at (563) 690-9679 or thummer@stonehilldbq.com.

Mindful Moments

Mindful Moments is a program for individuals with dementia and their caregiver. It offers an inclusive space that promotes the well-being of the person living with dementia and other memory impairments as well as the caregiver through engagement in activities and outings that encourage participants to enjoy the moment rather than focus on the challenges associated with dementia. Mindful Moments occur on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 10:30-11:30am at various locations. Visit www.stonehilldbq.com/caregiverresourcecenter/ mindfulmoments to see the full schedule!

Windsor Park

At Windsor Park, we believe a vibrant environment contributes to the well-being and comfort of our residents. Over the past several months, Stonehill has been hard at work making updates to our facility — and the results speak for themselves. From modernized common areas to refreshed apartment features, these enhancements are all about creating a more beautiful, functional, and welcoming place to call home.

Laundry Room Renovations –First Floor & Basement

Clean, efficient, and accessible — that was the goal for our newly updated laundry rooms. Both the first floor and basement laundry areas have received complete makeovers. Fresh flooring, improved lighting, and updated finishes give these spaces a bright, fresh feel, turning a simple chore into a more pleasant task for residents.

A Welcoming New Front Entrance

First impressions matter, and the front entrance is where it all begins. We have added a logo and updated signage on the entryway doors. Inside, we’ve redesigned this space to make it feel more open, modern, and inviting. With upgraded flooring and lighting and a digital signage display, the entrance now reflects the warmth and professionalism that define Windsor Park. It not only looks better — it feels better too, creating a more accessible and dignified welcome for residents, visitors, and staff alike.

Apartment Upgrades That Feel Like Home

Across our apartments, we’ve been working steadily to update interiors in ways that enhance comfort and style. These updates include fresh paint in select units. The changes give each space a contemporary look while maintaining the cozy, home-like feel our residents love.

Windsor Park is more than a facility — it’s a community. And with these recent upgrades, we’re proud to provide a refreshed and revitalized space that our residents can truly enjoy.

A Shining Cross

Thanks to the generosity of donors, we were able to install permanent lighting on the cross on top of the building. A lighting ceremony and blessing were held at our Open House on April 24. The cross will be lit year-round and its color can be changed to match the season. We are thrilled to share this cross as a beacon of faith on our campus and hope it brings peace and joy to our north-end neighborhood!

Pat McCarthy

Pat is a retiree from John Deere, formerly the Master Gardener for the City of Dyersville, and an avid banjo player. He was the primary caregiver for his wife who passed away in 2017 from complications with Alzheimer’s disease.

Pat first heard of Stonehill in the hospital after a fall that resulted in broken bones and injury to his back, neck, and ribs. Hospital staff recommended he transition to a skilled nursing setting (postacute care) to continue his recovery before returning home. He spent 3 weeks in Post-Acute Care in the Health Center, receiving nursing support, physical therapy, and occupational therapy to help him heal, regain strength and mobility, and return home.

As he reached the end of his stay, he met with his care team and made the decision to have Stonehill At Home provide non-medical home care for 30 days as he continued to recover and gain strength on his own.

His home caregiver, Lil, came in for a few hours three times a week to start. She would help with everyday tasks like laundry, cleaning up the kitchen, vacuuming, and gardening.

Just as valuable as the tasks his caregiver completed for him, was the personal connection and companionship. Sometimes they would just visit, or go out on trips to visit the graveyard, run errands, or go get a pizza.

“I get things done. But when I fell and got hurt and broke a bunch of bones, there were a lot of things I just couldn’t do specifically on my own. I needed some help. Stonehill did that for me,” said Pat.

As time progressed and he continued to heal, Lil understood what Pat could do on his own and what things he still needed some help with. His caregiver visits were decreased to twice a week. When the time came to end services, Pat said it was a sad day. “I still miss her. She’s a good friend.”

The two have stayed in touch, checking in on each other’s lives. Pat is happy to get back to the things that means he is living well—living independently, participating in community events, getting out to talk to people, gardening, and playing music.

He recommends Stonehill. “If anybody gets sick or hurt, go there. That is going to be the most wonderful place as far as home care, skilled nursing, etc., having the people around that understand patient care, wellness, physical abilities, nutrition—things that you need to get that prime care.”

Ethics & Spiritual Care

Ethics Consultation: Aligning Care Goals

Ethics Consultations can seem like a scary thing to consider. One does not want to seem as if they are calling out another for being unethical! Certainly, you wouldn’t want to cause a stir with your loved one or their care. But, think for a moment about how helpful it could be to have a third party available to discuss your questions with, how beneficial it may be to help understand more fully your loved one’s wishes and desires, or to bridge a divide between caregivers. Stonehill’s Ethics Committee is able and willing to help with these issues.

An Ethics Consultation is a complimentary benefit that Stonehill offers to staff, residents, clients, their families, and/or legal representatives to help with care decisions that seem insurmountable. Representatives of Stonehill’s Ethics Committee meet with those that have requested the consultation. They will gather information about the situation, including the viewpoints of all involved parties. Then, the Ethics Committee members can provide advice on options considering ethical principles and teachings of the Catholic Church, make recommendations, and facilitate discussion. Any final decisions are up to the person or people that requested the consultation.

To request an Ethics Consultation, complete a request form found on the back of the Ethics Consultation brochure or speak to a social worker or the Director of Health Services/Administrator.

National Eucharistic Pilgrimage

The National Eucharistic Pilgrimage began in 2024 tracing four paths across the country in the shape of a cross. The pilgrimage was a living testament to the power of the Eucharist, rekindling faith and inspiring deep devotion and diverse community worship. The pilgrimage was renewed for 2025, and this year is beginning in Indianapolis and traveling cross country to Los Angeles. Perpetual pilgrims will make the entire journey bearing the Eucharist. Community members are welcome to join at pilgrimage stops and some segments along the journey in their community. The Blessed Sacrament will arrive in Dubuque on Friday, May 23 at 4pm and a community procession will take place on the river walk. The pilgrims will then travel to Cathedral for the night.

Stonehill residents will have an opportunity to participate in adoration as the Pilgrimage makes a visit to our campus in the morning on Saturday, May 24. We are grateful to the Archdiocese of Dubuque for facilitating this visit and enabling our residents to join in this holy event.

After leaving Stonehill, the pilgrimage will continue on to the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville. A full itinerary and details on the stops in the Archdiocese of Dubuque can be found at dbqarch.org/eucharistic-pilgrimage.

Benevolent Foundation

Thank you to all who attended and supported our first Stonehill Trivia Night in April. We raised over $2,000 for our Employee Scholarship Fund with a night of good food, drinks and many laughs. Ten teams competed, with the “Cinderblocks,” “Holy Rollers,” and “We are Smarter than We Look” winning first, second and third place prizes. We look forward to hosting many more Trivia Nights in the future.

Spring Appeal

Our Spring Appeal is underway and is raising funds to support programming in the Caregiver Resource Center. The Caregiver Resource Center on Stonehill’s campus was a dream of many in our community. Four years ago, as a result of generous support from Jim Thiesen, the Center became a reality. Last year, the Center served 120 new caregivers seeking support, resources, and self-care opportunities and the need continues to grow. We still have so much more to do as we continue to support the unsung heroes who are caregivers for those who suffer from chronic illnesses. If you would like to learn more about the work of the Caregiver Resource Center, we are happy to have that conversation. Donations to the Spring Appeal are welcome via our website or by mail. We are so grateful for the generosity of our community that makes this important work possible.

Great Give Day

We encourage everyone to participate in the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque’s Great Give Day 2025, which will be held on Wednesday, May 21st. We will be raising funds to support both the Caregiver Resource Center and Stonehill. Donations to the Caregiver Resource Center will support future programming. Any dollars donated to Stonehill Communities will be used to improve the backyard of the Health Center. As the weather gets warmer, this is a great place for families to visit and residents to enjoy the outdoors. Donations can be made at www.greatgiveday.org.

Stonehill Communities will be present at The Great Give Day Celebration that will be held in Washington Park on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm. Join us for music and food trucks. Take this opportunity to stop by the Stonehill table to say hi or learn about all we have to offer.

As always, if you have questions or want to share your Stonehill story, you can reach me at 563.690.9660 or tconnolly@stonehilldbq.com. Thank you for supporting our mission!
