Back in the late 80s, the Northeast Harbor Port Directory was “born out of necessity” by the hands of Eric Roos, Assistant Harbormaster at the time. In 1991, Wes Shaw purchased it and started up one for Southwest Harbor. While ownership has changed hands a few times - with each owner putting their unique touches on the pages - it has always been locally owned, and there is a strong desire to continue to meet the needs of all who pick it up and use the information in its pages. Our sincere wish is that you enjoy your time on Mount Desert Island, and thank you for reading the Southwest Harbor & Tremont Port Directory.

Welcome to Southwest Harbor and Tremont — the “quiet side”! You have chosen to visit one of the most naturally beautiful places in the country — Mount Desert Island. This PORT DIRECTORY is intended to enhance the time you spend in this area by providing easy access to information about places to stay, things to do and see, activities, and places to dine, among other things. In the back of the book, you will find an extensive index of merchants. Also useful are the marina rules, rates and telephone numbers, tide charts, ferry schedules, museum listings, church services, maps of Southwest Harbor (including Bass Harbor and Tremont), and a full map of Mount Desert Island in the center section. It is our hope that the Port Directory will serve as a helpful reference book for visitors and residents alike.

To sail a sloop…from Kittery Point to Quoddy Head, in all kinds of weather, is not a small undertaking. To…call on families on isolated islands, visit the lightkeepers and the lifesaving stations, is a task of greater magnitude.

– First Annual Report, Maine Sea Coast Missionary Society, 1906 Tucked into a suite of offices overlooking Northeast Harbor, Maine Seacoast Mission oversees the work it’s tended for over 100 years. Focused on healthcare, education, food, shelter, and community building, the Mission has worked with those who dwell on the isolated outer, unbridged islands and rocky coast of Maine.

All photos in this article are used by permission of the Maine Seacoast Mission.

This year the focus is on the Maine Seacoast Mission.

The organization first took on its “task of greater magnitude” when two Mount Desert Island pastors and brothers, Alexander and Angus MacDonald, sailed a small sloop called Hope to Maine islands and lighthouses. They sought to relieve the desolate conditions they often found in these places. As a pastor in Bar Harbor, Angus was connected to many of the wealthy rusti cators of Mount Desert Island. He successfully solicited their help in funding their two boats. Hope and Morning Star, and their charitable endeavors. In that moment in 1905, the Maine Seacoast Mission was born. The third of the Mission’s boats was named Sunbeam by island children. Commissioned in 1912, its crew soon began bringing books, Christmas presents, supplies, church services, and pastoral care to the light houses, outer islands, and isolated coastal communities of Maine. Sunbeam also transported the very ill to hos pitals and provided basic health care and vaccinations.

Mission Downeast, the nonprofit’s 62-acre campus in Cherryfield, provides wraparound social and education services to coastal towns from Gouldsboro to Machias.

Whether a seasonal visitor or lifelong resident, it’s incredible to think that everyone on MDI, Downeast, and on the outer islands has had the Maine Seacoast Mission, a Sunbeam service boat, or Mission Christmas as part of their lives.

Today, the Mission serves Mainers out of two additional locations beyond the Colket Center. The 74-foot-long M/V vessel Sunbeam V delivers island health and island outreach services.

–John Zavodny, Maine Seacoast Mission President, 2019 - present Today aboard the Sunbeam, three crew mem bers and two program directors routinely visit islanders. At the helm is Captain Mike Johnson and Storey King serves as Engineer. They man age the boat, keeping it in tip-top shape while negotiating routine passage to Frenchboro, Matinicus, and Isle au Haut. In 2021, Sunbeam visited six islands and traveled 2,025 nautical miles. During those visits, 658 visitors boarded the boat to receive services. provides islanders opportunities for socializa Cont’d. on p. 8 Sunbeam, the Mission’s boat, docked

Director of Island Outreach and Chaplain, Douglas Cornman, MA BC-DMT, provides activities that augment small island schools’ work, supporting teachers and their students with activities ranging from marine ecology to the arts and storytelling. Last year, Douglas made 810 home visits across seven islands, worked with 15 island churches, and conducted 32 creative arts classes with islandHisschools.counterpart,

Director of Island Health, Sharon Daley, RN, uses the health and telemedicine facilities aboard Sunbeam. She and her team regularly provide flu vaccines, arrange specialty consultations, coordinates an island eldercare network with an annual retreat for eldercare professionals. Sharon also works alongside with elderly so they can age in place within their com munities. 2021 was a unique year for Island Health. Under her leadership, Mission staff administered 1,088 Covid-19 vaccina tions and boosters across seven islands. A friend to all, Sunbeam and her crew connect with thousands of people each year.

The work of Maine Seacoast Mission is pretty simple but has never been more relevant—at the end of the day it comes down to neighbors helping neighbors achieve their goals. The long service legacy of the Mission is really about hope, compassion, and trust. – John Zavodny Up the coast in Washington County, Maine Seacoast Mission’s outpost, Mission Downeast hosts programs focused on education, food security, shelter, and community engagement. Education initiatives include everything from in-school and after- school programs to STEM classes, college-prep, and teen leader ship workshops. Since 2002, the Ed Greaves Education program, better known as EdGE, has partnered with schools to offer afterschool and summer camp opportunities for students in kindergarten through 8th grade. Last year, nearly 700 students took part and the Mission conducted 1,992 hours of programming across Cont’d. on p. 10 Director of Island Health, Sharon Daley, RN administering a covid-19 booster to an islander

The Maine Seacoast Mission has been a trusted friend along the Maine coast since 1905. Across the age spectrum, its staff has worked alongside resilient community members to share meals, partner together, and know its constituents’ hopes, fears, joys, and sorrows. Rooted in a history of compassionate service and mutual trust, the Mission seeks to strengthen coastal and island communities by educating youth, supporting families, and promoting good health. This nonprofit is doing that every day.

Ranging from 7th to 12th grade, teens can take part in Journey, a strength-based mentoring and youth empowerment program that has engaged over 53 students to date. The Mission also awards approximately 80 annual college scholarships.

The Mission’s food security program includes a pantry, meal deliveries, a student backpack program, and weekly dinners at the Weald Beth el Community Center housed at Mission Downeast. Abating hunger has taken center stage in the past two years. Between pantry visits and doorstep deliveries, 6,386 visits were counted. These boxes and bags of healthy home staples fed over 2,000 people across 784 households. With food donations made by Good Shepherd Food Bank, Folklore Farms, Walmart, and Shaw’s, the Mission distributed more than 65,000 pounds of produce, meat, and bread.

You can visit Great Cranberry and Little Cranberry Island on the same ticket when using the ferries. They carry only passengers, pets, and small freight, such as bicycles. Accommoda tions for larger vehicles are through barge rental only.

Yes, there are cranberries on the Cranberry Isles. They are smaller than store-bought berries. These inch tall plants grow wild berries that are the size of peas and grow on dry ground versus bogs. The islands are only accessible by boat. A mail boat, tour boats, water taxis and ferries from Northeast Harbor, Southwest Harbor, and Manset make regular trips to these two islands.

You will start out on the Long Pond Trail, walk behind and to the left of the Pumping Station, walk along the pond for 0.2 miles until you see the trailhead for Perpendicular Trail on the left.

There are many trails on this moun tain range, and my favorite, although I have a love/hate relationship with it, is Perpendicular. Mansell and Bernard are not known for their fabulous views, but instead are known for their fantastic trails and stonework.

There is only one trail that you can do to reach the peak of Mansell, and that trail is... The Perpendicular Trail, aka; The StairMaster from Hell. Please note: the Perpendicular Trail is NOT pet friendly.

Navigating the trails in this area can be tricky, make sure you pick up an Acadia National Park hiking map! Known as the “quietside” of the island, you won’t cross paths with too many fellow hikers while out on the trails winding through this mountain range.

Western Mountain Mansell (949ft) and Bernard (1,071ft), along with three nubbles, make up Western Mountain Trailhead Directions: Driving into Southwest Harbor from Somesville, take the Seal Cove Road on the right. In just over half a mile turn right onto Long Pond Road and drive all the way to the end. The parking lot is small, make sure to grab a spot early in the morning, or later in the afternoon.

Although the trail doesn’t actually go straight up the side of the mountain, as the name sug gests, it is still quite strenuous. Steep stones stairs make their way up and around a boulder field. Each steep section is followed by a pleasant, level trail along the cliffs.

The Perpendicular trail is 1 mile long to the summit of Mansell, and is an excellent example of the hard work and craftsmanship that went into building the trails of Acadia. With over 1,000 man made stone steps, and an overlook of Long Pond and beyond, this portion of the hike will take your breath away! Eventually, the trail leads to a little stream. It crisscrosses the water a few times before veering off further up the mountainside. FYI, the stairs are never over. The steepness of this trail offers a very good excuse for the hiker to slow down and really take in the surrounding wonders of nature in the area. For instance, we spotted this unusual tree arched over the trail like a canopy... a spotty one at Atthat!about the 0.8 mile mark there will be a sign for an overlook. Take your time in this spot, it’s the best view you’re going to get on Mansell. But, a wonderful view it is. Make sure you walk back to the trail you came off of. Continue another 0.2 mile to the summit, and continue hiking in the same direction to reach the summit of Bernard. Onward to Bernard! It’s a quick descent down to the Razorback Trail, through the evergreen and spruce forest. I love when the forest is so dense, that any beam of sunlight through the trees makes its presence clearly known.

Seen from the trail going to the Bernard Summit ~ always keep your eyes peeled!

After a quick scramble up to the top of the razor back granite ridge, you’ll pop out of the trees for a short distance. This is where navigating can get tricky. There are multiple nubs and stubs, as I call them, between the summits of Mansell and Bernard; Great Notch, Knight Nubble, and Little Notch. All three make the hiking trail more adventurous and uncertain at the same time. From the Little Notch summit sign you will be 0.2 mile from the Bernard summit. This last stretch is a doozy! Continue walking past the summit sign along the Bernard Mount Trail for 0.5 mile, and make sure to continue on that same trail for another 1.0 mile. This is another spot where navigating can be tricky. Bernard Mountain Trail will bring you to a small, gravel parking area called Mill Field. Walk out on the gravel road and take an immedi ate left up to the Gilley Trail trailhead. In 0.3 mile you will come to Gilley Field parking area and continue on the Cold Brook Trail for 0.4 mile back to the Long Pond Pumping Station. Whew!

In 1761, one of the two earliest settlements on Mount Desert Island (MDI) was around the shores of Bass Harbor in Tremont. The town of Mount Desert, which included all of Mount Desert Island, was incorporated in 1789. The area which is nowTremont composed its western half. The Town of Tremont was incorporated in 1848 which included South west Harbor. The only other towns on Mount Desert Island at the time were Mount Desert and Eden (later Bar Harbor).

While initially the town of Mansell (named for Robert Manselle, one of the patentees of Mount Desert in the 1620 grant from James 1st to the Coun cil of New England), the town was renamed Tremont at the request of the townspeople. The name Tremont is thought to derive from the three moun tain peaks in the area – Bernard, Mansell, and Beech. Original boundaries enclosed about 42 square miles, nearly one third of MDI. Southwest Harbor separated from Tremont in 1905, becoming the fouth town of Mount Desert Island. Southwest Harbor includes the community of Manset, while Tremont is comprised of Seal Cove, Bernard, Bass Harbor and West Tremont.

The Oldest Remaining Hotels on Mount Desert Island

When was Mount Desert Island really “discovered”? Was it in 1604 when Samuel de Champlain was exploring the coast of Maine, saw this beautiful island with a range of mountains that were bare at their summits, causing him to exclaim “Je l’ai nom mée l’isle des Monts-deserts.” Or “I name this the island of bare wilderness peaks.”

After Captain Jesse Pease made his last cargo run of sugar and molasses from Portland, Maine to New York in 1883, he commissioned a contractor to construct the hotel he’d always dreamed of Therunning.Claremont Hotel opened the following year and quickly became a popular destination for wealthy families from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts to escape the summer heat.

42 - Southwest Harbor & Tremont Port Directory www.baysidegraphics.me

Perched on a hillside with a commanding, panoramic view of the ship-friendly waters of Somes Sound, it’s no surprise that the magnificent location for The Claremont Hotel was chosen by a retired sea captain.

Or was it much earlier (deep shell heaps date back 6000 years) by the American Indi ans? The Wabanaki Indians knew Mount Desert Island as Pemetic, “the sloping land.”

Or was it the mid-19th century artists and journalists visiting the area? They took back paintings and descriptions so compelling that Mount Desert Island, with the “scent of the fragrant pines, the tang of the salty sea” (taken from the State of Maine Song) became THE destination place for a much broader group of visitors from the cities of the northeast.

Photos in this article, unless otherwise indicted, are provided by, and copywritten to, The Claremont Cont’d. on p. 44 The Claremont, 1880s View of the hotel from the water, 1938

These visitors became known as the “Rusticators” … the summer visitors who willingly gave up their luxurious city homes for the more “rustic” life on the island.

A small tourist industry began to spring up, with Island residents taking in boarders for several weeks, even the whole summer season. And that is where the two oldest remaining hotels, the Asticou Inn in Northeast Harbor and The Claremont in South west Harbor, on Mount Desert Island got their start. For information on The Asticou Inn, pick up a copy of the Northeast Harbor Port Directory and Chamber Guide, or go to baysidegraphics.me and click on the link to view the virtual directory.

In the second year, a guest from Phil adelphia came … Xanthus Smith.*

In the Claremont’s first year, and until the automobile’s arrival on Mount Desert Island 30 years later, a summer day’s recreation was a gentle series of politely paced outdoor activities during those superb mornings and afternoons and gentle doings like hymn singing and reading aloud on quiet evenings. For their two dollars a day, Claremont guests were given much more than lodging. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were included, and guests who planned a day hiking or canoeing could ask to have the lunches packed for them in picnic hampers.

Xanthus was a well known land scape artist who, like so many of his contemporaries had discovered the joys of summers on the Maine coast. And to help finance those travels, he would sometimes offer to barter a painting for a few nights lodging. His was a working vacation and when he checked into the Claremont, he was nearing the end of a summer of painting that had taken him from Prouts Neck in southern Maine up to Southwest Harbor. The Claremont portrait was one of the paintings that helped build the artist a na tional reputation. For years, the original artwork hung in the dining room, but it is no longer shown on the property.

When Captain Pease passed away in 1901, his wife Grace took over as owner and manager before selling the hotel to Dr. Joseph D. Phillips in 1908. Grace stayed on as manager until her death in 1917, at which point Dr. Phillips assumed * Then, as now, the surname Smith was quite commonplace. According to his mother, that is why Xanthus was christened with a name from ancient Greece. People could forget Smith, but they would remember Xanthus.

On Allen McCue’s agenda was to have the best croquet court on Mount Desert Island; and starting in 1971, he worked hard to attain just that! A minor project in the fall was the leveling of some ground between the hotel and the Phillips cottage. This was seeded on September 21,22 and 23; and, as Allen reported in a letter, the seed was eaten by the birds on September 24, 25 and 26. While this was resolved, he jokingly would say that “the most signifi cant project” was the croquet weeding, there was quite an element of truth in the after those birds did a job on the court’s initial seeding, the first Claremont Croquet Classic was played to a finish on Labor Day weekend, 1976.

In the late 1980s, the McCue’s transferred ownership of The Claremont Hotel to their son Bill who was already busy running a successful law practice in Portland.

When the next generation of McCues decided to pursue other interests, Bill real ized it was time for a change. In September, 2020 he sold The Claremont Hotel to Tim Harrington, the creative hospitality leader behind the revitalization of several historic properties in Kennebunkport including The Tides Beach Club, Hidden Pond, and Cape Arundel Inn and Resort.

To ensure the hotel had an experienced, hands-on manager, Bill turned to the young man who first started working at The Claremont as a teenager to be his General Manager. That young man was Jay Madeira who, along with his two broth ers and two sisters, formed an extraordinary hospitality team the McCue family depended on for the next forty years and whom guests adored.
