The Bubbles got their name because of their unusual shape. When viewed from the southern end of Jordan Pond, the twin mountains look bubble-like. They are different from most other mountains on MDI; rather than the typical elongated shape, they are instead more round.

Welcome to Northeast Harbor! You have chosen to visit one of the most naturally beautiful places in the country — Mount Desert Island. This PORT DIRECTORY is intended to enhance the time you spend in this area by providing easy access to information about places to stay, things to do and see, activities, and places to dine, among other things. In the back of the book, you will find an extensive index of merchants. Also useful are the marina rules, rates and telephone numbers, tide charts, museum listings, church services, maps of Northeast Harbor, Cranberry Islands, Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor as well as a full map of Mount Desert Island in the center section. It is our hope that the Port Directory will serve as a helpful reference book for visitors and residents alike. We want this publication to be useful, fresh, fun, and appealing. Keep it aboard your boat, in your home, by your phone, or in your car. For additional copies, please ask at a place of business, Chamber of Commerce office, or just contact us. As we are a member of the Maine Tourism Association, our books can also be found at most visitor centers throughout the state.

Unbelievably, this is the 35th annual edition of the Northeast Harbor Port Directory! Back in the late 80s it was “born out of necessity” by the hands of Eric Roos, Assistant Harbormaster at the time. In 1991, Wes Shaw purchased the Northeast Harbor Port Directory and started up one for Southwest Harbor. While ownership has changed hands a few times - with each owner putting their unique touches on the pages - it has always been locally owned, and there is a strong desire to continue to meet the needs of all who pick it up and use the information in its pages. Our sincere wish is that you enjoy your time on Mount Desert Island, and thank you for reading the Northeast Harbor Port Directory.

Parking: North and South Parking areas near the Jordan Pond Boat Launch, or at the Jordan Pond House. The Island Explorer Bus, that leaves from downtown Bar Harbor or the Acadia National Park Visitor Center, will also get you to this hiking destination.

When someone asks me what they should do in Acadia National Park before they leave, I have to make sure they checked out Jordan Pond, especially the easy hiking trail that goes around the pond. Jordan Pond is a beautiful body of water carved out of the land by a moving glacier many years ago. The area has many features that are family friendly for exploring with multiple great photo-ops. With twin peaks, The Bubbles, protruding at the north end of Jordan Pond, and framing mountains to the left and right, Penobscot and Pemetic, the backdrop behind all sides of Jordan Pond are just spectacular to see. The Jordan Pond Trail loop is the best, and easiest way to experience 370 Main Street • Southwest Harbor 244-5856 www.southwestcycle.com

Northeast Harbor Port Directory - 7 all Jordan Pond has to offer. Depending on ability levels and how many stops you make, the entire loop should take between 1-2 hours to complete. The East side of the Pond offers the most flat portion of the trail, while the West side is a contrast of a few ups and downs around a rocky, boulder shoreline and then a mile of wooden planks through the marshland. I personally love the beautifully crafted and maintained wooden planks; which also serve a purpose- they protect the marshland on this side of the Pond.

The North end of the Pond offers several wooden bridges, and if you would like to make the hike more challenging, hike up South Bubble mountain and back down to the Pond Trail. The South end of the Pond, where Jordan Pond House sits atop a sloping lawn, offers an artificial dam that empties into the beginning of Jordan Pond Stream.

No matter the season, the Jordan Pond Loop is easily doable. With the Loop Road closure during the off season, Jordan Pond can be accessed via Jordan Pond Road (a residential road, so please drive cautiously). Summer brings the most people and bugs (of course!), but also beautiful flowers and wildlife. Fall, my favorite, brings all the colors of red, orange and yellow to the trees. The Pond is often frozen over during the coldest winter months, with the surrounding mountains and trails covered in beautiful snow. If you do venture out in this area during the winter, please make sure you have the proper equipment in order to safely experience the trail. Whether you choose to bike the carriage roads in the area, canoe or kayak the crystal clear water, or hike any of the multitude of trails, no adventure is complete without a stop at the Jordan Pond House restaurant.

The best refueling snack there is are the delicious iconic popovers, soaked in delicious strawberry jam and butter. If you feel you deserve a bigger treat (reward), try the popover sundae! Outdoor seating on the sloping lawn down to the Pond offers that breathtaking view of The Bubbles. I do not recommend trying to take any strollers or wheel chairs on the Jordan Pond Trail. Put your little ones in a carrier and let your toddlers walk and explore with ease. Proper footwear and a good walking stick can help the older-folk in your group.

These visitors became known as the “Rusticators” … the summer visitors who willingly gave up their luxurious city homes for the more “rustic” life on the island. A small tourist industry began to spring up, with Island residents taking in boarders for several weeks, even the whole summer season.

When was Mount Desert Island really “discovered”? Was it in 1604 when Samuel de Champlain was exploring the coast of Maine, saw this beautiful island with a range of mountains that were bare at their summits, causing him to exclaim “Je l’ai nommée l’isle des Monts-deserts.” Or “I name this the island of bare wilderness peaks.”

The history of the Asticou Inn begins with its namesake. When Europeans first landed on the shores of Mount Desert Island, the sakom (Passamaquoddy for chieftain) of the greater Mount Desert Island area was Asticou. Asticou is first mentioned in a 1608 English document as headman of an Indian village of what became known as the River of Mount Desert – later

Or was it much earlier (deep shell heaps date back 6000 years) by the American Indians? The Wabanaki Indians knew Mount Desert Island as Pemetic, “the sloping land.”

And that is where the two oldest remaining hotels, the Asticou Inn in Northeast Harbor and The Claremont in Southwest Harbor, on Mount Desert Island got their start.

For information on The Claremont, pick up a copy of the Southwest Harbor & Tremont Port Directory, or go to www.baysidegraphics.me and click on the link to view the virtual directory.

Or was it the mid-19th century artists and journalists visiting the area? They took back paintings and descriptions so compelling that Mount Desert Island, with the “scent of the fragrant pines, the tang of the salty sea” (taken from the State of Maine Song) became THE destination place for a much broader group of visitors from the cities of the northeast.

Three generations later, Augustus Chase Savage and Emily Manchester Savage built their home atop a hill overlooking the harbor in 1854. This cottage is now known as Cranberry Lodge and is the oldest of the Asticou Inn buildings in use today. In 1870, the Savage family began housing boarders, and so began the tradition of lodging at the Asticou Inn. In the 1870’s, A.C. Savage (who was now a retired sea captain and entrepreneur) foresaw that the rusticator boom, which had built up in Bar Harbor, would soon spill over to neighboring Northeast Harbor. The main inn was constructed and began welcoming its first guests in 1884. The original building burned down in 1900, but it was rebuilt, grander than ever and opened in the summer of 1901. Over the years, it has lodged some of America’s greatest social and political leaders. These highprofile guests would stay for not just several days, or a week, but often for an entire summer. In Boston, Philadelphia, and New York, they would speak of, and look forward to the “season” on Mount Desert Island. In 1941, when the United States was thrust into World War II, normal operations at the Asticou Inn were suspended so that all could join the war effort. The Inn was not reopened until 1946. In October of 1947, Mount Desert Island was ravaged by a terrible wildfire. Nearly 17,000 acres on the eastern half of the island Cranberry Lodge as it stands today.

segmented and renamed Union River, Union River Bay and Blue Hill Bay. Five years later, his name appears in French records as the sakom who welcomed the French to his summer village on the southeastern shore of Somes Sound.

In 1798, the Savage family settled their homestead on the land at the head of Northeast Harbor. Those first Savage’s were industrious and multitalented. They were seaman, fisherman, hunters, farmers, housekeepers, and lumbermen.

Many of Bar Harbor’s great “cottages” were destroyed, as well as many of the grand hotels and restaurants. The towns of Seal Harbor and Northeast Harbor were the only areas spared from this Duringdisaster.this period of the Asticou Inn’s history, it was run by Charles and Katharine Savage, the third of his lineage to manage the Inn. In addition to being a dedicated Innkeeper, Charles Savage was a man of many skills and interests. He was a skilled wood carver, and some of his carvings, the “Five Canterbury Pilgrims” can still be seen on the mantel over the fireplace at the Northeast Harbor library. He was also the lead landscape architect of the Azalea Gardens, which can be visited across the street from the Inn. In 1956, noted landscape designer Beatrix Farrand decided to break up the extensive gardens she had planted at her estate in Bar Harbor. Charles Savage undertook to rescue as much as possible of her collection, particularly her dazzling azaleas. Today, this Japanese-style garden, one of the “hidden gardens” of Maine, provides peaceful, contemplative pleasure, not only to guests of the Asticou, but to the many travelers who visit it annually.

In the early 1960’s, both the Asticou Inn and Kimball House, also in Northeast Harbor, were sold to the Asti-Kim Corporation. This group was composed of local businesspeople and summer residents who wished to see the tradition of the large hotels preserved for the future. As large hotels fell out of favor with the advent of the motel, it seemed only one of the two could survive. The Kimball House was torn down, but the Asticou Inn has survived to this day, still an integral part of Mount Desert, and the Northeast Harbor community. Graphics

This lovely island reaches out to almost everyone, to each in its own way, so that affection deepens into love and one has a longing to postpone the moment of departure, to linger on, and always to return. Not long after the ice has gone from the ponds, the sounds of spring are everywhere; in the forests, and fields, and along the edges of the sea. Warblers are pouring in over the mountains, ferns uncurling their coiled fronds, peepers calling in the swamps, and loons on the lakes. Then summer comes with the scent of balsam and pine in the hot sun, sails white against the brilliance of the sea, and now and again, the days of fog and dripping forests, until suddenly the island wakens to a morning clear and cool with the feeling of fall, too soon but beautiful, and with a touch of sadness. Then come the days of last picnics, lobsters, the smell of woodsmoke, the sunsets, the tremendous stars, and the bright phosphorescence of the night sea. The most precious things of life are close at hand, freely given, the cry of a gull, the shadow of a summer cloud lazy on the mountain, and autumn wind moving swiftly out across the shining sea.

Greetings

Each spring leaves contain green, red, orange and yellow pigments. Throughout the summer, the green is dominant due to chlorophyll production. 2. Many factors influence autumn coloration; the most important being day length, followed by rainfall, sugar accu mulations in the leaves, wind and prolonged periods of cool, bright, sunny autumn weather without a killing frost. The brighter the light during this period, the greater the production of those pigments. 3. When the days of autumn are sunny and cool, the nights chilly but not freezing, the brightest colorations usually develop. This is when the production of chlorophyll, which is created by sunlight during photosynthesis, slows down. 4. As sunlight hours decrease, the green starts to disappear and the other, underlying pigments - red, orange, yellow, scarlet and purple - begin to show. Meanwhile the tree produces a waxy substance to protect itself from the elements once a leaf separates from the branch. That’s why leaves can withstand strong wind and rain during the summer, but come down so easily during a fall rainstorm.

The organization first took on its “task of greater magnitude” when two Mount Desert Island pastors and brothers, Alexander and Angus MacDonald, sailed a small sloop called Hope to Maine islands and lighthouses. They sought to relieve the desolate conditions they often found in these places. As a pastor in Bar Harbor, Angus was connected to many of the wealthy rusticators of Mount Desert Island. He successfully solicited their help in funding their two boats. Hope and Morning Star, and their charitable endeavors. In that moment in 1905, the Maine Seacoast Mission was born.

To sail a sloop…from Kittery Point to Quoddy Head, in all kinds of weather, is not a small undertaking. To…call on families on isolated islands, visit the lightkeepers and the lifesaving stations, is a task of greater magnitude.

This is the sixteenth year that the Port Directories have put a spotlight on a local organization that “reaches out” - be it reaching around the world or around the corner. This year the focus is on the Maine Seacoast Mission. All photos in this article are used by permission of the Maine Seacoast Mission.

– First Annual Report, Maine Sea Coast Missionary Society, 1906 Tucked into a suite of offices overlooking Northeast Harbor, Maine Seacoast Mission oversees the work it’s tended for over 100 years. Focused on healthcare, education, food, shelter, and community building, the Mission has worked with those who dwell on the isolated outer, unbridged islands and rocky coast of Maine.

–John Zavodny, Maine Seacoast Mission President, 2019 - present Today aboard the Sunbeam, three crew members and two program directors routinely visit islanders. At the helm is Captain Mike Johnson and Storey King serves as Engineer. They manage the boat, keeping it in tiptop shape while negotiating routine passage to Frenchboro, Matinicus, and Isle au Haut. In 2021, Sunbeam visited six islands and traveled 2,025 nautical miles. During those visits, 658 visitors boarded the boat to receive services.

Today, the Mission serves Mainers out of two additional locations beyond the Colket Center. The 74-foot-long M/V vessel Sunbeam V delivers island health and island outreach services. Mission Downeast, the nonprofit’s 62-acre campus in Cherryfield, provides wraparound social and education services to coastal towns from Gouldsboro to Machias.

The third of the Mission’s boats was named Sunbeam by island children. Commissioned in 1912, its crew soon began bringing books, Christmas presents, supplies, church services, and pastoral care to the lighthouses, outer islands, and isolated coastal communities of Maine. Sunbeam also transported the very ill to hospitals and provided basic health care and vaccinations.

Whether a seasonal visitor or lifelong resident, it’s incredible to think that everyone on MDI, Downeast, and on the outer islands has had the Maine Seacoast Mission, a Sunbeam service boat, or Mission Christmas as part of their lives.

His counterpart, Director of Island Health, Sharon Daley, RN, uses the health and telemedicine facilities aboard Sunbeam. She and her team regularly provide flu vaccines, arrange specialty consultations, coordinates an island eldercare network with an annual retreat for eldercare professionals.

Director of Island Outreach and Chaplain, Douglas Cornman, MA BC-DMT, provides activities that augment small island schools’ work, supporting teachers and their students with activities ranging from marine ecology to the arts and storytelling. The Maine Seacoast Mission has been a trusted friend along the Maine coast since 1905. Across the age spectrum, its staff has worked alongside resilient community members to share meals, partner together, and know its constituents’ hopes, fears, joys, and sorrows. Rooted in a history of compassionate service and mutual trust, Missionthe seeks to strengthen coastal and island communities by educating youth, supporting families, and promoting good health. This nonprofit is doing that every day. Maine Seacoast Mission welcomes volunteers interested in its work. To learn more, please visit https://seacoastmission.org/volunteer/ Street, Harbor, Maine Douglas

The Mission’s food security program includes a pantry, meal deliveries, a student backpack program, and weekly dinners at the Weald Bethel Community Center housed at Mission Downeast. Abating hunger has taken center stage in the past two years. Between pantry visits and doorstep deliveries, 6,386 visits were counted. These boxes and bags of healthy home staples fed over 2,000 people across 784 households. With food donations made by Good Shepherd Food Bank, Folklore Farms, Walmart, and Shaw’s, the Mission distributed more than 65,000 pounds of produce, meat, and bread.
