FIRST The trend for sewer laying, after· a main trunk has been run up to the new subdivision, will be from the bottom of the vally southwards. Tui Glen area will be <lone before branches spread further up the yalley. . For health reasons the lower part of the valley will· have priority as drainage is deterio-rating and some septic tanks are ·· gi:vin trouble.

May Lose Trust Vote in Licensing Poll

STOES VALLEY TRANSPORT. Phone 1360A
It is the trust question that has been holding up the poll since the decision of the Licens ing Commission in March to give the valley a vote on thE: licence with the alternative of a trust · licence. The 64-dollar question is this: If Stokes Valley voted for a trust licence who would operate it? The duly-elected Lower Hutt Trust has been unable to ouer ate for years through lack of finance. The same trui:;t would logic __ally control in Stokes Valley with the same lack of finance. To resolve this dilemma the whole question is to be reopened. The -Commission will conduct another hearing, probably on August 1, o receive further evi dence on the trust position. ThE council, which is asking the Pro gressive Association for an esti mate of the -likely extent of trust licence support in the val ley, will make fresh representa tions at the hearing. to which all the principal representatives who appeared originally will be invited.

· If the 600-odd signature peti ··ion from the valley asking for )ither no licence or a poll is :my mdication a vote would turn Jown a hotel, but if opinions have· changed and a majority avoured a trust hotel the re sult would still be no hotel be :ause trusts just can't get the money to build hotels. ' Even if Stokes Valley elected its own trust, ,vhich it could, there's little to- indicate trust support would be much · more than moral support. Give

The Mayor must have been very pleased at the attendance at the Progressive Association general meeting this month. It was 38. He would be justified in as suming that the 700-odd rate payers who didn't come were satisfied with the first 21 months of his council's administration of the valley.
RUBBER
SAYS ENGINEER If you are laying seweragf pipes on your property to con nect to the nw sewer this year use rubber ring flexible joints says the City Engineer, Mr. Bach. Earthenware pipes designec for rubber joints will soon bE: available and in view of their superiority over cement mortar· joint pipes are strongly recom mended to Stokes Valley resi dents by Mr. Bach. For many years rubber rinr joints have been standard f01 larger sewer pipes, including of course, all of Stokes Valley' current installation, said Mr Bach, and they are now beinr produced for four-inch house hold drain pipes. They cost a little more but. in compensation, they can be laid faster and they never crack or lek thrnugh subsidence of the pipe line.
Way To Eastern Hutt
Eastern Hutt Road_ traffic 3hould have the right-of-w.ay at 111 times at the High Street ·ntersection, it was pointed out at the Progressive_ Association general meeting, The council· is t be requested to remove the sign "Main Route n fro·m High Street or erect signs indicating that Hig·h Street traf fic rnust give way to Eastern Hutt Road traffic. The junction, which has al ready been the scene of a num ber of serious accid!!nts, could become a constant danger spot as traffic increases, due to mis understanding of where the right-of-way lies.
