Director’s Notes

by Richard Garvin

ive or six years ago, I directed a play at SCT called Caught in the Net, the sequel to Run for Your Wife. In the script, the action takes place 15 years later from tonight's show. At the time, I didn’t know much about the play, its history, or the writer. As we started the process, I began to learn a considerable amount. The play was first performed in England and later became a hit all over the world. Ray Cooney is thought to be England’s answer to Neil Simon. I also learned that I loved the play and told myself that I would like to direct it again some day, and then along came Run for Your Wife. I jumped at the chance! Take one part great acting, one part great staging, one part great play (that’s about as simple as keeping a secret), and one part great crew and you have gold! Getting to direct Run for Your Wife is like getting to see a good friend you have not seen in a while. You want to run up and give him a big hug and kiss. Thanks to everyone who worked on this production: cast, crew, designers, set staff, volunteers, dressers, everyone. And to the people out in the seats waiting for the show to start, all I can say is “Open your arms and pucker up!"

The Artistic Director Welcome to Run For Your Wife, the third show of our 60th Season, and our 361st Main Stage Production. This is quite a milestone for us, being the third oldest, continually producing community theatre in the United States. To commemorate this milestone, we are having something totally different for all of our patrons to take part in. How about a raffle where you can win MONEY! That’s right! First prize is $5,000, second prize is $2,500 and third prize is $1,500. You can also win Season Tickets as additional prizes. The tickets for this raffle are just $20, and the drawing will be held at our 3rd Annual Shrimp Feed on May 14, 2011, at the Elkhorn Country Club. The wonderful Abba cover band, Waterloo will be joining us again, so you know the dance floor will be packed! Tickets for the Shrimp Feed are $45. We will have all the shrimp you can eat, pasta, salad, dessert auction, and many wonderful auction items on which to bid. Tickets are on sale at the SCT Box Office for both events. I certainly hope to see you all there, and who knows, you may even win the money! Somebody is going to, so why not you? You are in for a laugh riot this evening. Ray Cooney writes hilarious farces and this is the prequel to Caught In The Net which we produced a few seasons back, and it was an audience favorite. It has a wonderful cast, directed by Richard Garvin. The set design is by Brian Johnson, and the show features the Lighting Director debut of our Assistant Technical Director, Jessica Ann Wallin with costuming by Liz KastnerGarvin. I hope you all enjoy yourselves as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you. Happy New Year! I hope this New Year brings prosperity to everyone. You, our patrons, are the reason we do this, and we thank you for keeping the magic happening.

Please accept our sincere thanks!

Meet the Cast DARYN ALSUP Bobby Franklyn

“Love you M.G.” Daryn’s first show with SCT was Kiss Me, Kate, and beginning with Damn Yankees, Daryn has done the sound design for every musical presented on the SCT stage. He has received the Willie Award for Sound Design for Damn Yankees, Nunsensations and The Producers. He is honored to perform with friends and hopes the “shoe fits.” He is grateful for their love and support. ANDREA D. DASTE Mary Smith “Live proud, love hard, laugh often.” A well-known actress in SCT roles, Andie has appeared in The Producers, Are You Being Served?, Barefoot in the Park and Annie Get Your Gun, where she received the SCT Willie Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical. Andie dedicates this - and every - show to her mom and beloved late father, Walt.

EDDIE HARGREAVES John Smith

“I should really thank my girlfriend, Jennifer, and my family for their support. So remind me to do that some time.” Eddie began performing with SCT as the son in Over the River and Through the Woods and has been seen onstage in I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change and 25th Annual Putnam County

Spelling Bee. He has also performed with Changing Faces Theatre Co. and Delta Center for the Arts. A graduate of Pacific University, Eddie works for The Haggin Museum.

JENNIFER HASTINGS

The Reporter Jennifer has been dancing and performing for over 30 years. She graduated from United States International University in 1992 with a degree in Musical Theatre. She has appeared with Delta College, Townsend Opera Players, Stockton Civic Theatre, University of the Pacific and Fallon House Theatre, and was an 18 year member of Ballet San Joaquin. She can often be found at Renaissance Faires dancing with Siamsa, a Scots-Irish dance troupe.

SCOTT MINOR

Detective Sergeant Troughton “...like any 10 year old would do, I ate my mistake.” (After cooking fried eggs in vinegar instead of oil.) Scott’s first appearance with SCT was in the 2008 production of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, playing the Governor. He became hooked on “the SCT experience” and although he now resides in Sacramento, he continues to participate in SCT productions, including I Remember Mama and Cinderella. When not acting, Scott is Director of Library and Learning Resources at the California North State College of Pharmacy.

MIKE MOON

Stanley Gardner “I am thrilled to be performing for you. Thank you for your support of SCT.”

Mike Moon is without doubt one of the best known male comedic talents at SCT. Debuting in 2003, he has had numerous major roles in musical productions such as Sugar, South Pacific, Damn Yankees, and The Producers, as well as in clever British farces such as Caught in the Net, Are You Being Served?, and most recently, Oklahoma! He has been honored with Willie Awards for his roles as Jerry/Daphne in Sugar, and Luther Billis in South Pacific. Mike received his degree in Political Science at San Jose State, and owns his own business, M² Business Services Office Management. He lives in a remodeled 1885 Victorian home with his partner Kent Scarlata, and their four cars, cats, and rabbit, and in his spare time, loves to garden, take long walks and watch movies.

NINA THIEL Barbara Hunt

“I am thrilled for the opportunity to sharpen my teeth on this hysterical farce with such a wonderful director, cast & crew! Fasten your seat belts!” Nina first appeared on the SCT stage in 2002, in Footloose. She has been on stage in both plays and musicals since that time, including: All My Sons, Our Town, Everything in the Garden, Caught in the Net, Follies, Damn Yankees and Cinderella. She has also been active with the Stockton Theatre Project, St. Mary’s High School Drama Department, U.O.P., and has a critically acclaimed one woman show, Always the Women: A Solo Performance of Jesus’ Encounters with Women in the Gospels. Nina received the S.A.R.T.A. Elly Award the past two years for choreography. She is married to Larry Thiel

and they have 3 children, Catherine, John & Daniel.

BILL YEE

Detective Sergeant Porterhouse “Being an actor and a pharmacist keeps me sane. I get to use my right brain during the day and the left brain at night.” Bill was most recently on the SCT stage in Are You Being Served. Past SCT credits include: The Producers, Damn Yankees, Kiss Me, Kate, Guys and Dolls, Caught in the Net, Sugar, The Fantastiks, and Anything Goes. He won the Best Actor Willie Award for his role in Caught in the Net. He received the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in Are You Being Served? Recently, Bill appeared as Barney the Talking Dog in the Tracy Performing Arts’ production of An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein. Bill thanks his family for their love and support.

RICHARD GARVIN

Director Well-known to our audiences as both a director and an actor, Richard most recently played Jud Fry in Oklahoma!, directed Barefoot in the Park, and played the role of Roger Elizabeth De Bris in The Producers. Richard graduated from Stockton’s Edison High School, where he studied with Stockton Civic Theatre stalwarts Donovan Cummings and Judy Caruso Williamson. He then attended Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts in Santa Maria, where he was a student of Donovan Marley. After spending 12 years as an equity player in professional theatre, Richard returned home to Stockton and has worked with SCT ever since. He is married to the

daughter of a well-known SCT family, Liz Kastner Garvin.

BRIAN JOHNSON

Set/Sound Design Brian Johnson began his SCT affiliation with performing roles in Nunsensations and Wait Until Dark, then moved on to art and Scenic Design in regular productions and the theater’s youth programs. He received a Willie Award for Scenic Design of Cinderella and also earned high praise for his use of mixed media - live action, video and recorded sound - in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. In his “real life,” Brian is a licensed contractor whose work may be seen at JohnsonCustomPainting.com. He extends appreciation to Richard Garvin for the creative freedom and support he provides. As always, Brian thanks his family for their great love.

JESSICA WALLIN

Light Design “I would like to thank my parents, Von and Jennifer, my brothers, Samuel and Zachery, all of my loving grandparents, my most awesomest of friends, Mary Anne, Andie and Bill and most of all, my love and support, Jason Layne.” Jessica is SCT’s full-time Assistant Technical Director and first worked backstage on the SCT production of The Producers. She has also done lighting design at Murphy’s Creek Theatre and worked as the Assistant Theatre Manager for Hutchins Street Square in Lodi. Jessica and Jason Layne are engaged to be married.

LIZ KASTNER GARVIN

Costumer “I am happy to be working with my husband on this show.” Liz comes from a long-time SCT family and

has been involved with SCT, both on stage and off, for many years. Productions include First Season, Lil Abner and Everything in the Garden. When not spending time at SCT, she and Richard enjoy life with their 3 dogs, 2 cats and 2 bearded dragons.

EDIE NAYER

Stage Manager Edie has stage-managed productions at SCT, many of them with Director Richard Garvin, and has served as Assistant Director. In addition to volunteering for SCT backstage duties, Edie has performed onstage in Stepping Out, A Christmas Carol, and Once Upon a Mattress, and directed It Had to be You. She is a retired teacher with a BA from Pacific and a MA from National University. As a teacher at Franklin High School, she directed two shows as a drama teacher and acted with students in three.

PUTSY LEW HONG

Property Mistress Putsy began at SCT at the Monroe/Willow Streets Theatre. She has been involved as a key backstage coordinator at SCT for over 30 years in literally dozens of productions, and has also worked with other theater companies in Stockton and Lodi. In addition to her stage managing, Putsy has volunteered with the Footlighters in various capacities: concession, ushering, will-call, and house manager. She has received the Fred Bollinger Award

along with her husband, George, and was individually awarded the Layne Fields Award, the Founders Award, the Dora Belle Howard Award, the Outstanding Technical Service Award, and the prestigious Bravo Award.

TERRY SMITH

Technical Director Stockton Civic Theatre is indeed fortunate to have Terry Smith as its fulltime resident Technical Director and Scene Shop Supervisor. His creative hand can be seen in literally all of the theater’s productions, whether it be in carpentry and painting, lighting, sound, or any of the other technical elements of our shows.
