Director’s Notes

O

ur words, with age and experience, take on a very different meaning when uttered in a different context and time. So it is with the Kids in Spelling Bee. Their stories happen in the midst of their chaotic lives—their individual and collective “pandemonium” better known as puberty. But in the context of the Spelling Bee, the mirrors from which they see themselves at age 11 or 12, may wind up being enlightening steps as they find their way from pubescent insecurity to adulthood. If a child is taught that Jesus is her personal friend, then it only makes sense that she “hears” Him speaking to her in her own words; the boy whose puberty gets in the way of his spelling concentration can only attempt to understand that confusion in the context of his own innocence. Spelling Bee is much more than a wonderful book by Rachel Sheinkin with brilliant music and lyrics by William Finn. It is not just about the words the kids were able to spell, but what the characters learned about themselves on the journey to the Spelling Bee. It’s about adolescent demons like the pressure to be “number one”, parental indifference, imagined love, the need to belong, being heard, kids’ acts of kindness to each other, winning and losing, and, oh yes, and how the spellers all have found safety in the world of words—the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee! And it’s about having a wonderful time in the theatre! We have assembled an amazing cast and crew whose talent and powerful performances you will remember for many seasons. We three Mullers , Al and Dominée (Codirectors), and Alison (Costume Designer) and son-in-law, Paul Kimball (Vocal Director and “Panch”) have had a great time plotting with Wendy (Choreographer), Brian (Scene Designer), Terry (Lighting Designer) and Daryn (Audio Designer) to guarantee that SCT’s production of Spelling Bee will be a joy for both audiences and the company of performers. All of this would not have happened without Jim Coleman’s splendid musical direction and keyboard genius plus generous amounts of encouragement and support.

Meet the Cast Jacob Bronson Chip Tolentino

Jacob Bronson’s premiere performance at SCT was as Linus in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and since that time he has performed in The Full Monty and Cinderella. His outstanding acting and singing have been recognized with a Willy Award for his role as Dave in The Full Monty. In addition to his work at Stockton Civic Theatre, he has performed with Fresno’s Good Company Players as Marcellus Washburn in The Music Man, and as the Witch in Hansel and Gretl. When not auditioning, in rehearsal, or onstage, Jacob is employed in yet another role at Starbucks.

Shawn J. Carrington Mitch Mahoney

“Dedicated to Shanda D., who two years later is still cheering me on from her seat in heaven.” Shawn had lent his wonderful talent to a wide variety of Stockton Civic Theatre productions, including The Piano Lesson, The Secret Affairs of Mildred Wild, The Full Monty, Annie Get Your Gun, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He has won two Willie Awards and been nominated an additional four times. Outside SCT, Shawn has been active with Smiler’s Comedy Playhouse and Kiley’s Dinner Theatre.

He is a teacher at Kindercare Learning Centers, and lives with his husband Dann in Stockton.

Eddie Hargreaves

William Barfeé “I need to thank my family, friends and girlfriend, Jennifer, for their support. She reminded me to do that. Oh, and it’s pronounced HarGRAVES.” Eddie, who consistently placed second in his real life school spelling bees, can claim a proud history of performances with Stockton Civic Theatre since 2005. He acted in Over the River and Through the Woods, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He has performed in Man of La Mancha, Urinetown and The Music Man at Delta College. Eddie holds a Communications Degree from University of the Pacific, and serves as Webmaster for the Haggin Museum.

Paul Kimball

Vice Principal Panch “Thanks to SCT for giving me the chance to act again. I love it!” Paul Kimball is wellknown by audiences for the many times he has played the roles of Musical Director, and Conductor in the orchestra pit, but this show brings a great surprise to many as he unpacks his impressive skills as an actor for the first time at SCT since Crazy for You. A

graduate of Berkeley High School and University of the Pacific, Paul teaches music at Lincoln High School and conducts the St. John’s Chamber Orchestra. He has won a Willie Award for Annie Get Your Gun at SCT, and an Elly Award for San Joaquin Delta College’s production of The Music Man. He is married to the Spelling Bee Co-director, Dominée, with whom he has two daughters, Ashley and Alyssa, who are also involved in theatre arts.

Randi Lineé

Rona Lisa Pirretti In her first appearance on the SCT stage, Randi Lineé plays the key role of the embattled organizer and alumna of the Putnam County Spelling Bee. Another major part she has played recently was in the title role of “Peter Pan” with Modesto Performing Arts. A gifted singer in the classical sense, Randi has performed with numerous opera companies, including Stockton Opera Association, and has worked in several music related and musical education programs in both the public and private sectors. She and her partner Andrew Walls have a child, Destiny.

Amanda Jayne Melhuish

Lagainne SchwartzandGrubenniere For one so young, Amanda Melhuish has a diverse background as an actress in SCT productions-in the chorus of Annie Get

Your Gun and as Joanna in I Remember Mama, and in the tense drama The Children’s Hour. Credits outside SCT include Urinetown and The Sound of Music. Most recently, she won 1st Place in the Modesto High School Talent Show. She is a Senior at Modesto High, where she maintains a 4.25 Grade Point Average.

Taryne Moyse

Olive Ostrovsky “So excited to participate in this wonderful show, with such an excellent cast and crew! Thank you SCT!” A veteran of SCT’s hit musical Annie Get Your Gun, Taryne received a 2009 Willie Award for Best Supporting Actress in the role daughter Katrin in I Remember Mama. She has also performed on stage at California State University Chico, and at San Joaquin Delta College. In “real life” Taryne is an artist at Trader Joe’s.

James Reed

Leif Coneybear “Leif is one of my dream roles, and I am honored to be fufilling it alongside Al, Dominee, Jim, and Paul. ‘I once saw a ladybug that looked a lot like you, so I named her Timothy the Great!’ Enjoy the show!” A very talented young man, James Reed is a fabulous actor, choreographer, and director. He began his SCT career with

a performance in Fame, then moved on to Caught in the Net, Charley’s Aunt, The Full Monty, and Annie Get Your Gun. Elsewhere, he has performed at Delta College and with the Manteca Theatre Arts Group. His choreography has been recognized along with Jennifer Hastings with a Best Choreography Willie Award for The Producers. He directed SCT’s 2009 holiday show, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, to great reviews and wide public applause. James works as Artist in Residence at San Joaquin County Office of Education.

Carly Wickham-Stickler Marcy Park

“Special thanks to my husband John, who told me not to give up.” Carly has a great Performing Arts background, having attended Cal State Fullerton as a Theatre major, and worked as a costumer at Disneyland. Her first performance at SCT was as a child in the 1987 production of Charlotte’s Webb. Since that time she has appeared in Crazy for You and Blithe Spirit, as well as in Delta College productions of Oklahoma and The Crucible. She creates wedding invitations in her spare time.

Al Muller

Co-director Al Muller’s 49 years of artistic contributions to SCT began as a costume designer in 1961 and continued as a scene designer, an actor, and a director of musicals and plays. Never one to shy away from difficult scripts, provocative

themes, or casting and staging challenges, the retired Delta College director’s work has garnered 11 “Willie Awards” for such productions as Kiss Me, Kate, Promises-Promises, Song For A Nisei Fisherman, Piano Lesson, Follies, Big River, Crazy For You and more. Honored in 2006 with the “Applause Award” for Exemplary Volunteer Service, Al has served SCT in many leadership capacities, most recently as Board President for 4 years.

Dominée Muller-Kimball

Co-director Currently a middle school Vice Principal, Dominée Muller-Kimball is also a member of Stockton Civic Theater's Board of Directors, as well as Director of the SCT, Jr. summer program. Most recently, she has played a stepsister in Cinderella, an old lady in The Producers, and the role of Baroness in Hats! She was also assistant to her father, Al Muller, as he directed The Secret Affairs of Mildred Wild. Formerly a high school theatre arts teacher, she earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Dramatic Art and earned her Doctorate in Educational Administration. She's ecstatic to be working again with her father, her sister Alison and her husband Paul in Spelling Bee. Dominée thanks her mother Camilla and her daughters, Ashley and Alyssa, for giving her this opportunity.

Jim Coleman Conductor

Before joining the SCT Staff as Artistic Director, Jim Coleman also directed Sweet Charity (1997), Anything Goes (2000), Guys and Dolls and South Pacific (2005). Jim lived and worked in New York for 27 years. His Broadway credits include: musical direction for Sweeney Todd and Mame with Angela Lansbury, and Anything Goes with Patti Lupone. For the Paper Mill Playhouse and the State Theatre of New Jersey, he conducted and directed over 25 musicals and plays, as well as touring the country with Sweeney Todd, The Sound of Music, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and A Little Night Music. He conducted at the New York City Opera with Beverly Sills, and for regional opera companies in the United States and China. Since becoming affiliated with SCT, he has directed Picnic, Cabaret, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, The Full Monty, Dearly Departed, Annie Get Your Gun, The Producers and I Remember Mama.

Brian Scott Johnson

Set Design & Stage Manager “Thank you to my family for their love and support.” In the past three Seasons, Brian Johnson has left an indelible mark on many Stockton Civic Theatre productions. Spelling

Bee marks his eighth set design at SCT, where he has been recognized with a Willie Award for Best Set Design on Cinderella, and in 2009 was presented with an Artistic Merit Award for his unique and creative video and sound production for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. If all that weren’t enough, he also played the role of a “heavy” in the mystery drama Wait Until Dark. Brian is the owner of Johnson Custom Painting in Stockton. He has a daughter, Delenn, who has played a number of juvenile roles in SCT shows.

Wendy Hastings Poeschl

Choreographer “Thanks to Mom, Dad, Steve, Chesa and my friends for all their support.” A dancer for 33 years, Wendy Poeschl is President and CEO of her own company, Dancer’s Inc. Her first Season at SCT was in 2009, when she danced in the chorus line of The Producers. Spelling Bee has provided Wendy her first opportunity to choreograph a show at Stockton Civic Theatre. Wendy has danced in San Joaquin Delta College productions, and is an 18 year member of Bolshoi West. She is grateful for the encouragement she receives from her husband, Steve, and their daughter Francesca, who has also danced in SCT shows.

The Economics of Community Theatre One might assume that with nearly all seats filled at every performance, a not-for-profit theatre would have plenty of money. Unfortunately, the revenue from tickets covers only about 40% of the theatre’s total expenses. And, without the generosity of the many volunteers who donate their time and talent—from the actors and set builders to the ushers and stage crews—it would not even cover that. For other needs, we must reach out to the community for funding of operating expenses such as insurance, building maintenance, office supplies and postage; as well as the many educational and cultural programs we offer beyond our main stage. If we are to continue to offer this expanded program of theatre arts, we must turn to you.
