THE PRODUCERS

T

he Producers is a musical adapted by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan from Brooks' 1968 film of the same name, with lyrics by Brooks and music by Brooks and Glen Kelly. As in the film, the story concerns two theatrical producers who scheme to get rich by overselling interests in a Broadway flop. Complications arise when the show unexpectedly turns out to be successful. The humor of the show is accessible to a wide range of audiences, and draws on ridiculous accents, caricatures of homosexuals and Nazis, and many show business in-jokes. David Geffen persuaded Mel Brooks to turn his movie into a stage musical. When Brooks met with Jerry Herman to discuss their working together, Herman declined, telling Brooks that he should do the job himself, as he was a good songwriter. Brooks then asked Thomas Meehan to join him in writing the book for the stage. Brooks persuaded Mike Ockrent and his wife Susan Stroman to join the creative team as director and choreographer. After Ockrent's death on December 2, 1999, Stroman agreed to continue as both director and choreographer. The last addition to the creative team was Glen Kelly as the musical arranger and supervisor. Although the musical has many scenes and jokes taken from the film, there are still many differences. The original film was set in the present day or its year of release, 1968. The musical was set in 1959. Consequently the character Lorenzo St. Dubois (LSD), a hippie who played Hitler in the 1968 movie, does not appear in the 2001 musical. Ulla has a much larger role in the musical, and is a more three-dimensional character than the seemingly mindless bimbo of the 1968 movie. Even the Nazi playwright Franz Liebkind is portrayed more sympathetically, and comes to a happier ending than his 1968 counterpart. Overall, the musical is much more upbeat than the original film, which was a darker comedy lacking a happy ending. The original production opened on Broadway on April 19, 2001, starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, and ran for 2,502 performances, winning a recordbreaking 12 Tony Awards. It spawned a successful London production, running for three years, national tours, many productions internationally and a 2005 film version. This Stockton Civic Theatre 2009 Season run of The Producers is the first time for the show to be produced in any Northern California community theatre.

The Producing Director

W

elcome to the 2009-2010 Season. It’s hard to believe that it’s here already! Hope everyone had an enjoyable summer and are ready for 6 great shows. At this performance, you are seeing the musical that holds the record for winning the most Tony Awards in history—12! I am talking about Mel Brooks’ The Producers! We have assembled a terrific ensemble, and a group of principal players that are stellar! This is a huge show for us, and I have to thank a very generous anonymous $10,000.00 sponsor. This has helped us immeasurably to put this gigantic show on our stage. Sponsorships are miracles from heaven for us in this economy, and are available for all of our shows, if anyone is interested. I have to give special thanks to James Reed and Jennifer Hastings who have tirelessly recreated the original Susan Stroman choreography for this production. There is another new innovation that we are trying for this show. We are using the original orchestration for the show, but it is not live. Budgetary reasons led us to try this experiment. This innovation is not available for all shows that we do, so never fear, we are not giving up live musicians. The savings, however, are substantial, or we would not be doing it at all. Our regular, fabulous musicians will be here for Hats! and I Remember Mama, and I am thrilled about that. I guess that’s enough out of me, so get ready to laugh, at the wonderfully bawdy, The Producers! Welcome Back!

OUR SPECIAL THANKS

Dino & Joan Cortopassi Cortopassi Family Foundation for the generous sponsorship of

THE PRODUCERS

The Economics of Community Theatre One might assume that with nearly all seats filled at every performance, a not-for-profit theatre would have plenty of money. Unfortunately, the revenue from tickets covers only about 40% of the theatre’s total expenses. And, without the generosity of the many volunteers who donate their time and talent—from the actors and set builders to the ushers and stage crews—it would not even cover that. For other needs, we must reach out to the community for funding of operating expenses such as insurance, building maintenance, office supplies and postage; as well as the many educational and cultural programs we offer beyond our main stage. If we are to continue to offer this expanded program of theatre arts, we must turn to you.
