A

re You Being Served? was a TV sitcom originally broadcast in England from 1972 to 1985. It was set in the men's and women's departments of Grace Brothers, a large, fictional London department store. It was written mainly by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft, with contributions by Michael Knowles and John Chapman. The idea for the show came from Lloyd's brief period working at Simpsons of Piccadilly in the early 1950s, a clothing store which traded for over 60 years. Are You Being Served? featured humor based on sexual innuendo, misunderstandings, mistaken identity and occasional slapstick. In addition, there were sight gags generated by outrageous costumes which the characters were sometimes required to wear for store promotions, and gaudy store displays frequently featuring malfunctioning robotic mannequins. The show is remembered for its prolific use of double entendres. The main humorous base of the series was a merciless parody of the British class system. This permeated almost every interaction and was especially evident in the conversations between the maintenance men and the ostensibly higher-class store personnel. The episodes rarely left the store, and to parody the stereotype of the British class system, characters rarely addressed each other by their given names, even after work. When they did, it was almost always for a comical effect. The series later became history's most popular comedy series on American PBS stations and on BBC America. The stage adaptation of Are You Being Served? originally ran at the Winter Gardens Theatre, Blackpool over the summer of 1976. In the stage play, the familiar characters of Grace Brothers Department Store prepare for a sale and then depart for a staff retreat, subsequently surviving their stay at a one star establishment with everything remaining but their modesty. The story, in two acts, takes the staff to Spain’s fictional Costa Plonka while the store closes for renovation. Half the play is set in the familiar store, and the remainder in Spain, where we see all the lustiness from the TV series and film, with Mrs. Slocombe attempting to have her way with supervisor Captain Peacock, while Mr. Lucas tries to seduce lingerie saleswoman Miss Brahms. In 1977, an Are You Being Served? film was released using the same characters and cast as the play.

Meet the Cast HILARY ANDAYA Lady Customer/Mr. Grace This is Hilary’s first experience in theatre. She took Dorothy Mulvihill’s evening class about four years ago, and she thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It has been tremendous fun being able to join the SCT community. When she is not at rehearsals, you can find Hilary teaching 2nd/3rd grade at Elmwood School, in a yoga class, or playing tennis. MIGUEL CHICAS, JR. Male Customer/Cesar This is Miguel’s second show at Stockton Civic Theatre, having just appeared in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He recently graduated from St. Mary’s High School where he performed in The Enchantment of Beauty and the Beast, M*A*S*H, Bye Bye Birdie, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Into the Woods, The Crucible, and Anything Goes. Miguel is sad that he had to leave St. Mary’s, but he is excited to be at SCT. He would like to thank his family and friends for their love and support! “God Bless!” MIC CUTSINGER Mr. Lucas Are You Being Served? marks Mic’s second performance at SCT, having just performed as Joseph in SCT’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. While in the Actors Training Program at So-

lano College, Mic performed in The Comedy of Errors and went on to act in the Missouri Street Theatre’s production of Midsummer Night’s Dream. ANDIE DASTE Nurse/Conchita Andie has been in the theatre since the age of 8, and is very excited to continue acting at SCT. She was in the recent production of The Producers as a member of the chorus, most notably as The Bag Lady and Broadway Babe Reject. Late last season, she was honored with the Willie Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Dolly Tate in Annie Get Your Gun. 2009 was a hard year for Andie personally, having lost her father, Walt, in December. She sends her heartfelt thanks to her mother, Dawnette for her courage and her deep love. She also thanks her siblings, Ian and Sharee Daste, for making sure she came back to the theatre. Andie dedicates her performance in this show to two very important men she lost last year: her grandfather, Calvin Lewis, who loved the BBC Show this play is based on, and, most importantly, to her Daddy for his love, support, and emphatic encouragement to follow her dreams. She is sure they are both looking down and laughing with all of you! “Enjoy the show!” CHRISTINE FINK Taeresa Many people who know Christine would say that this role is well suited to her, and she feels she is becoming this role. She is excited to be working with such a wonderful cast and she hopes to learn a lot!

MARIA JOHNSTON Miss Brahms Maria is excited to be returning to SCT for her third season. Her credits include leading roles in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, The Full Monty, and Dearly Departed, as well as in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Maria is a professional R&B and Jazz singer; she was nominated for a Grammy in 1991. JASON KELL Captain Peacock Jason’s SCT credits include: South Pacific, Guys and Dolls, Mame, Big River, and most recently, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. His personal favorites have been: The Big Bang, The Producers, Damn Yankees, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Caught in the Net, Don’t Dress for Dinner, Mildred Wild, Sugar, and South Pacific. It was for the last two that Mike received Willie Awards. Mike is an Office Manager and lives in Oakdale with his partner, Kent, four cats and Smudge, the Rabbit! JOE NEELY Mr. Grainger Joe finds the role of Mr. Grainger both fun and interesting, and is a step up in social class from other Brits he has played. Joe previously appeared in Major Barbara and My Fair Lady. He has nearly 50 years experience in theatre as an actor, director and designer. He has a degree in theatre as well as some graduate work. His specialty is in the area of special props, such as armor, man-eating plants, mechanical horses, sofas, and many others. The Economics of Community Theatre One might assume that with nearly all seats filled at every performance, a not-for-profit theatre would have plenty of money. Unfortunately, the revenue from tickets covers only about 40% of the theatre’s total expenses. And, without the generosity of the many volunteers who donate their time and talent—from the actors and set builders to the ushers and stage crews—it would not even cover that. For other needs, we must reach out to the community for funding of operating expenses such as insurance, building maintenance, office supplies and postage; as well as the many educational and cultural programs we offer beyond our main stage. If we are to continue to offer this expanded program of theatre arts, we must turn to you.
