A Letter from the Head of School

The 2021-22 school year was another year of growth and a year of envisioning the future. We emerged from many of the constraints of the pandemic allowing us to experience, for the first time in over a year, what it was like to go to school and actually see smiling faces.
Among the highlights of the year was our substantial growth in enrollment. We welcomed over 60 new families to our community and the school grew to over 215 students. This growth was critical for the school in that it facilitated St. Michael’s efforts to sustain the small class sizes, extensive programming in the arts, and strong academic focus, for which the school is known. This trend has continued as the admissions season that took place in the Spring has yielded an even greater level of enrollment for the current 2022-23 school year.
The school continued to experience impressive support from the community in both the annual fund and in support of a new outdoor play area for the students. The new “playscape,” as we refer to it, is inspiring.
Centrally located and built to enhance the natural beauty of the campus, it will become a centerpiece that speaks to our school’s emphasis on celebrating childhood and the value of play. In addition, the playscape will be a resource for the community beyond school hours. We are grateful for the generous support of our community, as well as for a grant from the van Beuren Charitable Foundation.
The school completed a strategic plan. The plan targets five priority areas and anticipates a 10 year horizon of time to achieve its goals. This is an ambitious plan that will require full community support. The full plan may be accessed on the school’s website.
With the setting of a new strategic direction, the decision was made to recast the school’s mission, vision and values statements to fully encompass both the school’s history and where the school is heading. Our new mission is:
To develop courageous learners and caring citizens who are world ready.
Indeed, it is an exciting time at the school and we have much to look forward to. Enjoy reviewing this document and don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions, as it is always a pleasure to hear from families, alums and other community members.

A Letter from the Chair, Board of Trustees
Dear St. Michael’s Community,
The 2021 – 2022 school year at St. Michael’s was a year of enthusiastic momentum. With pandemic restrictions lifting, our school was able to focus on driving forces that will bring St. Michael’s students into the future and prepare them for a life of opportunity and responsibility.
The Board of Trustees, Head of School, administrative team, faculty, staff and the Parents Association worked tirelessly and successfully to keep the community engaged and connected during another year of worldwide unease.
The entire school community rallied around a yearlong strategic planning project. This plan will shape the strategic path and will act as a compass for all decisions that will be made in order to move the school forward into the next dimension of education.
The cost of a St. Michael’s education is not covered by tuition alone. In order to provide the in-depth curriculum, highest of quality teachers, and the myriad student
resources and activities, the annual fund must cover the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating each student. Despite a major decline in nation-wide fundraising, our community understood the importance of continuing to partner with St. Michael’s to raise annual fund dollars so as to preserve the unique experience our students are afforded. This year we exceeded our annual fund goal and did so during the pandemic.
Also, thanks to your additional contributions to a special project, we are soon to have an exciting addition to our campus which will provide an innovative outdoor play area replacing the decades old playground. The Playscape, a 21st century natural play space, will be installed this fall and will incorporate creative topography and natural products providing children with invaluable unscripted outdoor play.
Additionally, we were thrilled to host our first social event at the school in nearly two and a half years this spring. The sense of community, support and comradery was evident to all and was quite cathartic enabling in-person connections. We happily have many more social occasions to look forward to next year.
On behalf of the board of trustees, I would like to thank you for recognizing all that St. Michael’s provides to its students and greater community. The support you have provided has enabled our school to be a leading institution in the state and allows us to best prepare our students to be world ready.
Sincerely, Amy Martin Chair, Board of Trustees
A Letter from the Parents Association

Dear St. Michael’s Parents,
What a difference a year can make. We started the 2021-22 school year still in a state of caution due to the pandemic and ended the year celebrating together with some of our favorite school events. This year, the PA’s focus was around building more community. We wanted to reconnect our school families and continue to grow our Aquidneck Island community by supporting local organizations and businesses. Finally, and most importantly, we wanted to support our growing student community. The pandemic made it hard but we were determined, with your help, to reimagine, reinvent and recreate events and opportunities to build our communities this school year.

The PA, which includes all our families, really made it a special year. Our class parent group was stronger than ever this year and was finally able to create opportunities for their students and parents to co-mingle at parks, playgrounds, and beaches. Parents were invited to gather and meet at the La Forge Casino Restaurant for our fall parent cocktail party. It was the first time we were out as a parent community and the smiling faces said it all. Then in the winter, Buskers Pub was kind enough to allow us to host a cocktail meet up where we were able to connect and catch up once again.
Once restrictions lifted, we hosted our first in-person PA meeting in March, at the La Forge Casino Restaurant. From that point on, we were able to alternate monthly meetings between in person and virtual formats. Although Fall Frenzy was cancelled, our families kicked into high gear, volunteering their creatively decorated porches, and stocking them with treats for us so that we could host a family Halloween scavenger hunt around Newport and Middletown. All you needed was your decoder ring to help solve the clues.

We partnered with the school to support the Five Days of Thanks and Giving. Each day was a different focus culminating in a tree full of mittens which made its way to Lucy’s Hearth, and a school bus overflowing with toys for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center holiday toy drive. It was great to support these local Aquidneck Island organizations. Our families also came together to support our teachers and staff with gift cards, goodies and holiday treats. This support continued when the students and their families chalked the walk and delivered flowers to their teachers during teacher appreciation week in May.
The PA reopened the school library, inventorying and updating some of the titles so that our student community could enjoy a trip to the library to check out a book. Due to the pandemic, this is an experience some of our youngest learners had never had. It was great to make that a reality for them and wonderful to see so many parents volunteer their time.
In February, we brought back one of our favorite winter activities, ice skating. It was reimagined this year as we partnered with Gurney’s Newport for an outdoor skating adventure. With over 200 skaters, we packed the ice, enjoyed some hot cocoa, and had a gift card and thank you note drive for our healthcare workers at Newport Hospital. Our families showered them with gift cards to local establishments so that t hey could grab a breakfast or lunch on us. This was just one way we could thank our local healthcare workers for their tireless dedication to keeping us safe during the pandemic.
What a fun time we had partnering with the middle school Student Council this year. We were able to get feedback from them and help bring two of their ideas to life, a middle school game night and a middle school glow dance! These students amazed us with their ideas, their willingness to pitch in and help, and the spirit in which they helped grow their school community.
There were so many other events we participated in or hosted. Too many to name. But know that the PA was busy. With parents’ help, we were able to continue to grow the PA, support the school and students, and reimagine opportunities. We are very appreciative to every parent who helped us out, whether by volunteering time in the library, flipping burgers at SMS Field Day, helping set up game night, making homemade cookies for teacher appreciation week, donating to our class gifting, or just showing up to be part of our PA meetings. As Helen Keller once said, ‘Alone we can do so little; together, we can do so much.’ Thank you for helping us do so much.
Looking forward to an even more exciting 2022-23 school year.

Teach Initiative
Part of the Rhode Island Tax Credit Program for Contributions to Scholarship Organizations

The Teach Initiative’s sole purpose is to grant scholarships to qualified students attending our schools whose families demonstrate need.
In order to participate in the R.I. Tax Credit Scholarship Program, St. Michael’s Country Day School and Rocky Hill Country Day School created a separate 501(c)(3) organization whose sole purpose is to grant scholarships to qualified students attending our schools whose families demonstrate need. Our scholarship-granting organization (SGO) is called Teach Initiative One hundred percent of any and all contributions made to Teach Initiative will support tuition assistance for our students.
The Rhode Island Scholarship Tax Credit Program allows R.I. business entities to contribute scholarship support to low-income R.I. students attending approved private or parochial R.I. schools. They do this by designating their contribution to a scholarship-granting organization (SGO).
Rhode Island C-corporations, S-corporations, limited liability partnerships and limited liability corporations, and business entities operating as a pass-through entity, may use the tax credit against income tax filings.
Eligible businesses can choose to make a one- or two-year commitment to the scholarship tax credit program. A one-year commitment results in a 75% tax credit, while a two-year commitment results in a 90% tax credit, with a maximum credit of $100,000 (therefore, a business can contribute up to $111,111 per year). Donors can also claim the contribution as an itemized deduction on federal tax returns
