A Letter from the Head of School Dear St. Michael’s Community, What an amazing year 2022-23 was for our school. We kicked off the year by sharing our new mission statement and a fresh strategic plan and finished the year with an impressive celebration of our 85th anniversary. The school hit an impressive milestone in regards to enrollment; we grew our school programming; and, we enhanced our campus with an awesome new Playscape and planned for the campus of the future. It was a year where the school accomplished so much, all while delivering the outstanding and unmatched program that we are known for.

With 250 students enrolled during the year, St. Michael’s continued to see growth. The school had not seen similar numbers in enrollment in over 20 years. We attribute this growth to the increased awareness of St. Michael’s that came out of the pandemic years when our school’s faculty worked hard to stay in session, as well as to the school’s extensive programming. Additionally, our reputation for providing financial support as needed in an effort to serve the full range of families on Aquidneck Island, has surely played into this.

St. Michael’s added two new full time faculty positions, expanding on the school’s already robust offerings. The de Ramel Innovation Lab is now staffed by a full time teacher, who has developed a program that offers a deep dive into the range of tools and materials housed in the lab beginning in Kindergarten and stretching up to eighth grade. While students learn how to safely use tools and complete a variety of projects, more importantly students immerse themselves in the visioning and design-build process from start to finish – skills that are applicable beyond the walls of the lab and in life. While the first year saw many fine projects, it will be exciting to see how the skills of students in the earlier years build over the many years they have ahead of them.

Our approach to teaching and learning is one where we strive to meet all students where they are, personalizing instruction as much as possible, with the aim of helping them move to the next level in their learning. To better

achieve this goal, we hired a learning specialist to support students with learning differences and to work with teachers in supporting all students. With this new role St. Michael’s differentiates itself by positioning the school program to better serve families with children who come to us with multiple children with different learning styles.

In the years ahead, we will continue to build upon these efforts so as to fully serve the wide range of learners that attend St. Michael’s.

Another programmatic shift we made was an expansion of our foreign language program into the early childhood areas of the school. Now, all students at St. Michael’s begin second language study at age two. While learning a second language is clearly a world ready skill, with this move to begin teaching Spanish at the earliest ages, we capitalize on our understanding that starting earlier in learning a second language has great benefits.

The school’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts came into focus, as we took part in a study of the school’s efforts in this regard. The results of the Assessment of Inclusivity and Multiculturalism (AIM) study, developed by the National Association of Independent Schools, will help guide the school in the years ahead as we work to become a more diverse, equitable and inclusive institution. This is ongoing work that we look forward to embracing further in the years ahead.

In a similar vein, the school’s commitment to serving a range of students might best be exemplified by the continued healthy commitment to financial support. Over 40% of students receive some form of financial support at St. Michael’s. Without this commitment to supporting the full range of students, the St. Michael’s community would not be the vibrant and lively place that it is.

While so much happened during the school year, perhaps most exciting for the children was the opening of our new Playscape playground. This new state of the art play area provides physical and creative activity for all grade levels, as well as places to socialize and learn. The design was done in a way so as to compliment the school’s already beautiful campus and it doesn’t disappoint. The opening of this space in early November of the school year was surely a highlight. We are so grateful for the generous donors who stepped up to make this project possible for the students of St. Michael’s.

St. Michael’s graduates continue to impress us with acceptances to a wide range of secondary schools. This past year, we saw students accepted at the following schools: Centro Coreografico Las Palmas (Spain) Joffrey Ballet School of New York City Moses Brown School Narragansett High School Career and Technical Education Program Phillips Academy Andover Portsmouth Abbey School Portsmouth High School Career and Technical Education Program Prout School St. George’s School St. Paul’s School Tabor Academy Wheeler School The diversity of school programs on this list reflects the impressive range of programming that St. Michael’s offers, as well as the diversity of students and interests within our student body. From public magnet programs that have career focus, arts specific schools, to both boarding and day schools, St. Michael’s students are standing out and sought after.

Looking to the future of our campus, the school engaged with a team of architects to update the school’s campus master plan. Teachers, administrators and others dug in over six weeks and worked together to lay out a bold vision for the future of the campus. It is exciting to see some of the vision for this plan start to take shape, though it will take the support of the entire community to sustain and build upon the excellent programs that exist.

A Letter from the Chair, Board of Trustees

Dear St. Michael’s Community, 85 years! What an incredible milestone St. Michael’s Country Day School has reached. Our ability to last 85 years is due to our adaptable community that simultaneously is rooted in and celebrates its history and traditions. Honoring our past while having an eye on the future is imperative to the longevity of any educational institution, and we can feel a sense of accomplishment for continuing this practice.

Our greatest example of this was the release of our strategic plan which was a year-long process that included all constituents of the school community. This enabled us to properly reflect the collective temperature of who we are and where we want to be—moving the school forward into the next dimension of education. This resulted in a new mission, vision and values statement.

Our mission statement, “Develop courageous learners and caring citizens who are world ready” perfectly encapsulates the reasoning behind everything we do. We also engaged in a school-wide Assessment of Inclusivity and Multiculturism which provided every view to be heard and integrated, helping us to better understand our own community and how better to serve.

Through much analysis and discussion, the Board also made the very difficult decision to increase tuition in order to provide our students with the resources they need to fulfill our mission. Courageous learners need exposure to myriad opportunities, but with thorough and strategic support to enable them to process the information in their own individual way. This was accomplished with the addition of integrative programming (e.i. de Ramel Innovation Lab) and learning specialists this past year. This growth of our educational range will continue to be bolstered through the addition of more specialists and faculty, an academic dean and an auxiliary program director in the upcoming school year. The Board’s difficult decisions which result in expanded opportunities for our students, is one of the most impactful ways to prepare them to be world ready.

Memorable highlights from the year include an unforgettable gala commemorating our 85th year, a school enrollment of 250 students (the largest we have seen in over 20 years), the third-floor renovation providing additional classroom space, impressive secondary school acceptances, and wonderful community events run by our dedicated Parents Association. This fall, thanks to our generous donors, we opened the new Playscape Playground, built by GRG Playscape from Milwaukee. Incorporating creative topography and natural products, this playground is more representative of the way our generation used to play outdoors, fostering imagination, wonder and discovery.

The 2022 – 2023 school year was another integral block in continuing to build upon our strong past and design more opportunities for our present and future.

A Letter from the Parents Association Dear St. Michael’s Community, “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.”

- Coretta Scott King What a wonderful year the 2022-23 school year was. As always, the Parents Association (PA) hosted so many fun and exciting events. There were too many to mention all of them, but I wanted to share a few of the highlights.

One of the things I love and appreciate most about our PA is how our class parent volunteers help build community in their children’s classes. In the Fall, class parents welcomed students and their families at their class gatherings. The PA couldn’t have done what it did this past year without their help.

The PA kicked off the school year with the return of SMS Fest, a fall carnival style event open to all SMS families. It was so much fun to see the face painted, glitter tattooed kids bouncing around in the bouncy houses, racing through the obstacle course and sliding down the big slide. Interactions with the baby goats, bunnies and the horse were some of the sweetest parts of that day! This year we introduced the SMS Swap n Shop; an opportunity to pass on gently used dress up clothes, sporting equipment, costumes and snow gear to families in our community.

As we moved into the Fall, our Trunk r Treat event returned full force with so many creatively decorated cars. You could go on a dino safari, have a hot dog at a tailgating party, or get a full sized candy bar from the movie concession stand, to name a few. Add to that the games, donut eating contest and costumed students and families, and we may have had one of the biggest and best Halloween parties around.

Once again, we partnered with the school to support the Five Days of Thanks and Giving. Each day was a different focus culminating in a tree full of hats and mittens making its way to Lucy’s Hearth, and a school bus overflowing with toys for the MLK Jr. Center holiday toy drive. It was great to continue to support these local Aquidneck Island organizations and for the kids to experience the joy of giving. (cont. pg. 5)

During the winter we continued to gather and build our community. In January, Newport Harbor Island Resort welcomed us, hot cocoa in hand, to ice skate at their outdoor rink. In February, the Newport Art Museum opened their doors after hours to enjoy their permanent art collection along with their Social Fabric exhibit. We enjoyed art and the comradery of the St. Michael’s parent, teacher and staff communities. Cabana kept us fed with a beautiful spread and tasty libations.

Our middle school committee paired up with the student council again this year to help bring their movie night and school dance visions to life. They stepped back in to the 70s for a disco/hippie themed dance filled with snacks, disco balls and lots of smiling middle school faces doing the electric slide. The Student Council once again amazed us with their ideas, thoughtful planning, and help executing their vision.

We wrapped up the year with teacher and staff appreciation week. The students chalked the walkways and showered teachers and staff with cards and flowers. We filled out the week with staff massages and a huge grazing table. There are so many ways our families came together this past year to support our school’s vision, the students, staff and our St. Michael’s community.

Thank you for your help, your dedication, your creativity and your compassion. Thank you for making the PA and our St. Michaels community stronger. As most of our PA board members roll off this year, we are excited to continue to support the new PA board. They have exciting things planned and I hope you will continue to join them in bringing community to St. Michael's.

2023 Commencement Speaker – Paige Breyer, Class of 2019 Paige came to St. Michael’s in the fall of 2008 as a 3 year old preschooler and spent 11 years with SMS, graduating in 2019 and heading to St. George’s School. At St. George’s, Paige served as the chair of the Honor Board, a head editor of the school newspaper, stage manage of the theatre program, vice president of the National Spanish Honors Society and a member of the Cum Laude Society. Paige is currently in her freshman year at Harvard College, planning a double major in government and history on a pre-law track. We were honored to have her speak to the class of 2023 about her time at St. Michael’s, what she learned here, and how those lessons have helped her in the years since.

Class of 2023 Awards The Whitney C. Slade Arts Cup is awarded annually to the student who has excelled in the visual and/or performing arts. This year’s recipient was Annie Kirby.

James Green Memorial Cup is presented annually to the student who best exemplifies the ideals and spirit of St. Michael’s Country Day School. This year’s recipient was Cynthia Fairfax Cary Van Pelt.

Stanley C. Hughes Memorial Award is presented annually to the student who best exemplifies the mission of St. Michael’s Country Day School by demonstrating the ideals of a courageous learner and a caring citizen who is world ready. This year’s recipient was Madeleine Anne Carr.

William F. Whitehouse Cup is awarded annually to the student who has maintained the highest grade point average for the year. This year’s recipient was Gavin Phillip Braman.

The Alan F. Flynn Flag is presented annually to the student who, in the opinion of the Head of School and faculty, has accepted a position of responsibility and trust within the school and carried out those responsibilities while maintaining a commitment to academic excellence. This year’s recipient was Nicole Murphy.

The Playscape Project We are excited to welcome our local community to our new playscape!

In late August of 2022, our playscape design team and builder, GRG Playscapes, broke ground. They worked with a number of local subcontractors to regrade all of the landscape in and around the play area in order to create varied heights for embankment slides, log climbers, a double decker tree house, climbing walls, rope bridges, a vine climber and more. Poured in place safety surfacing created colorful pathways in and around the play structures, the A frame playhouse, the council ring and the sand table. By late October, the building of the structures was completed and by early November, over 40 trees had been planted and all the new soil had been planted with grass seed.

This playscape was designed to appeal to children ages 5 and up, and to offer the opportunity for dozens of children to be able to play simultaneously on creative topography that inspires imagination and exploration. Children truly love the playscape and the wide variety of challenges (climbing, swinging, sand play, jumping, running, imaginary play, moving heavy loose objects, etc) means that the children regularly find a new way to engage with the space.

The council ring and movable wood pieces provide heavy work and gross motor skill development, the climbing walls challenge small fingers and encourage fine motor skills, and the adventure play is critical for social emotional development. We are excited to continue to introduce more children to this wonderful playscape, and so grateful to our generous donors and the van Beuren Charitable Foundation for helping make it possible for us to build it!

The Legacy of Excellence Society honors those supporters who have designated a portion of their assets in their will or through their estate planning to benefit St. Michael’s Country Day School. Gifts from bequests and trusts ensure the future of our remarkable school, support our mission, and help establish a lasting legacy of excellence at SMS for today’s students and for generations to come. Individuals who include the school in their estate plans become members of the St. Michael’s Legacy of Excellence Society.

Directed donations are gifts to specific programs and/or projects. Many of our donors give to the Annual Fund first and then also make a directed gift. Directed donations have lasting impact on the growth and continued success of our school.

Your bequest can be a specific dollar amount or a certain percentage of the balance remaining in your estate or trust after paying all debts, costs and other prior legacies. Whichever form you prefer, you can direct that your bequest be unrestricted for the general support of our mission or for a specific purpose you designate (be sure to check with us to make sure your gift can be used as intended). Your assets remain in your control during your lifetime. You can modify your gift to address changing circumstances.

The Legacy of Excellence Society is open to anyone to join and gifts of all sizes are accepted.

This year we received a number of significant gifts that enriched our program immensely. Teach Initiative Part of the Rhode Island Tax Credit Program for Contributions to Scholarship Organizations

The Teach Initiative’s sole purpose is to grant scholarships to qualified students attending our schools whose families demonstrate need.

The Rhode Island Scholarship Tax Credit Program allows R.I. business entities to contribute scholarship support to lowincome R.I. students attending approved private or parochial R.I. schools. They do this by designating their contribution to a scholarship-granting organization (SGO).

In order to participate in the R.I. Tax Credit Scholarship Program, St. Michael’s Country Day School and Rocky Hill Country Day School created a separate 501(c)(3) organization whose sole purpose is to grant scholarships to qualified students attending our schools whose families demonstrate need. Our scholarship-granting organization (SGO) is called Teach Initiative. One hundred percent of any and all contributions made to Teach Initiative will support tuition assistance for our students.

Rhode Island C-corporations, S-corporations, limited liability partnerships and limited liability corporations, and business entities operating as a pass-through entity, may use the tax credit against income tax filings.

Eligible businesses can choose to make a one- or two-year commitment to the scholarship tax credit program. Endowment Funds For the year ending June 30, 2023, the market value of St. Michael’s endowment funds totaled $2,510,402* The following endowment funds are established at St. Michael’s Country Day School: The Alumni Fund / The Scholarship Fund Funded by various graduating classes, this endowment provides tuition assistance to new and current St. Michael’s Country Day Students.

The Elizabeth C. Delude Fund Established by Elizabeth Delude-Dix, to honor her mother and the grandmother of her son Dermot Delude-Dix ’01, the earnings from this fund are used to provide ongoing cultural opportunities for the teaching faculty to enhance the students' classroom experience.

The Bradford L. Dunn ’84 Fund Established in memory of Bradford L. Dunn ’84, by the Dunn family, this endowment provides funds for faculty to attend conferences and workshops concentrating on differentiated learning. This fund also provides financial assistance to current families whose children are in need of tutoring services.

The Faculty Fund Established and funded by the Class of 2004, this endowment provides funds in support of faculty, including salaries and professional development opportunities.

The McCune Fund Established through an anonymous gift of $100,000 and a second gift of $100,000 received during the 2006-07 school year, this endowment provides funds in support of financial aid.

The Jeffrey L. Gordon Faculty Enrichment Fund Established in honor of former Board of Trustees Chair, Jeffrey L. Gordon, this endowment provides funds to enrich the classroom experience through special activities.

The Hope H. van Beuren Classroom Maintenance Endowment Fund Established by Hope H. van Beuren, former teacher and current Trustee Emerita, this endowment provides funds on the two connected van Beuren Classroom Buildings. *Unaudited Figures
