MESSENGER ST. MICHAEL’S BY-THE-SEA
The Giving Issue WINTER 2016
GIVING For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son . . . There is a strange “cultural liturgy” that has emerged in recent years at the end of November. The ritual begins with Thanksgiving Day. We’ve got this one down: hang with family, eat turkey, nap. This is followed by Black Friday, the official beginning of the Christmas shopping season, and the day that retailers aspire to move from being in the red into the black. Next comes Small Business Saturday — officially coined in 2010 — an opportunity to support the locals on the block after ransacking the big box stores the day before. I’m not sure Sunday actually has a name. I mean it does in the church calendar — it is Christ the King or the First Sunday of Advent, but that is irrelevant to the culture liturgy. Next is Cyber Monday — officially coined in 2005 — when everyone returns to work to spend the day buying stuff on the internet. It turns out all the physical stores are still open on Cyber Monday, and they will honor the internet deals. And finally, this ritual week of feasts is now punctuated with Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday — officially coined in 2012 — is a response to the consumerism of the post-Thanksgiving season. I like how this cultural liturgy is now bookended. We begin by giving thanks and we end by giving of our time, talent, and treasure to worthy causes in support of the wider community. If you scored some deals on the three days in between, you were likely doing your Christmas shopping. The truth is, for all the greed that exists in the world, there’s a whole lot of giving that goes on too. After all, we are made in the image of a giving God. It is in our nature. As we celebrate the gift of God’s Son for the salvation of the world, may we continue to to grow in His image and likeness . . . as givers! In Christ,
Fr. Doran+

giving the present to
GOD FR. DORAN STAMBAUGH
My brother has a clock on his wall that I have always appreciated. All the numbers have toppled down into a jumbled pile at the bottom. Across the face in large letters it says simply, “WHATEVER.” If you have been at St. Michael’s for any length of time, you are probably aware that your Rector is . . . punctually challenged. I have prayed about it. Confessed it. Sought counsel for it. All of which made me late for my next meeting. Time and I have a begrudging relationship. Time is mysterious. You’re having fun - it speeds up. You’re not having fun - it slows down. Time is unforgiving. I am pretty sure time is responsible for the changing shade of my beard. We can’t stop time or reverse it. We can only organize our lives around it. Time is helpful when cooking, that’s true, and it’s good for power plays in hockey. That’s about it. Mostly it just rolls along oblivious to our thoughts and feelings, our wants and needs. Upon reflection , time is actually a cold and uncaring character. In my post-college soul-searching days, C.S. Lewis inspired my thinking that time isn’t all that helpful in the spiritual life. In the dialectic classic, Screwtape Letters, the demon uncle writes to his nephew apprentice: The humans live in time but our Enemy destines them

to eternity. He therefore, I believe, wants them to attend chiefly to two things: to eternity itself, and to that point of time which they call the Present. For the Present is the point at which time touches eternity. Of the present moment, and of it only, humans have an experience analogous to the experience which our Enemy has of reality as a whole; in it alone freedom and actuality are offered them. In other words, the past and the future don’t actually exist. The only point in time that anything ever happens . . . is right now. If we’re lamenting the past or pondering the future, we are not in the Present. The compulsory thing about the Present is that it is the only place we can meet God. For all that has happened in the past and all that may be in the future, none of it holds any bearing on our spiritual life. Our relationship with Almighty God unfolds only in the Present, where “time touches eternity.” His presence is in the Present. God loves us so much! He wants to be in living relationship with us always. But He can only dwell with us if we give our Present to Him.

GIVING GOOD GIFTS MEGAN STANTON
I have been blessed to be a part of the St. Michael’s administrative team for a little over three years now. As a member of the body of Christ and the wife of an evangelical pastor, I have been a part of and witnessed a variety of different churches with different backgrounds. As I’ve watched this parish continue to blossom and grow, I am so pleased to see and experience nothing but true Christian hospitality, love and mission. St. Michael’s by-the-Sea is a parish that is truly living out the mission of God as a body, united. There is such reverence for the Word of God and worship. I believe that God is truly glorified by this work. There is such a thoughtfulness, care and concern for living out the mission of St. Michael’s. The mission is not simply written, but truly lived out. This campus is extremely active and driven to accomplish it’s mission of “. . . sharing in Christ’s work of reconciliation and healing in the world.” Throughout its history, St. Michael’s has been blessed by an authentic sense of community. The sincere love shared by its member’s love extends beyond the St. Michael’s campus and into the greater community. The church of St. Michael’s is strong, alive and connected as one. But a church is more than a building or the things within it. It’s also about the people — people make up the body of Christ: Built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. Ephesians 2:20-22 We have all been given special gifts by God to contribute to the body: For as in one body we have many members, and all the members do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them. Romans 12:4-6a In the spirit of these Scriptures, I would encourage everyone to use the amazing gifts God has given you within the context of this parish. The body needs you and what God has given you! Perhaps the gifts themselves could serve no greater purpose? In the following pages, explore the different ministries available at St. Michael’s and the ways you are able to contribute! For more information or to get plugged in contact me at megan@stmbts.org.

SENIOR WARDEN’S REPORT TONY VANARIA
22
With the annual Pledge Drive recently completed, one easily could conclude that our parish giving for 2016 is in the Vestry’s rear view and that we are ready for a new financial year in 2017.
has formed a Financial Planning Team that is researching long-term financial needs to ensure that St. Michael’s remains a financially healthy and viable parish well into the future.
However, financial giving remains an area of Vestry concern to ensure that our parish does not end 2016 with a deficit. By God’s grace, we recently received large donations from the estates of two parishioners which the Vestry has applied to offset under-achieved contributions as compared to pledges for 2016. As this report is being written, the Vestry is also crafting the 2017 budget, which will be presented at our upcoming January All-Parish Meeting. Additionally, the Vestry
A lot of time is placed here in addressing our financial state but I would be remiss in not mentioning “time” and “talent” under the subject of giving as well. Both Fr. D and I have recently addressed the parish regarding volunteering in order to fill the many positions that exist throughout our ministries. I suppose that the question to reflect upon here is where one’s “talent” best fits the “time” needs of one or more ministries. The health of our ministries is an overall reflection of

the health of our Parish. No matter where your talents may be, there is a diversity of ministries that would be grateful for your presence. I would like to share with you how I became involved in our ministries because I suspect many of you may be in a similar situation. In 1998, I had been a St. Michael’s member for five years. At the time, we still held a 9:00 am Mass on Sundays in the Chapel. One Sunday, a bulletin announcement stated that a Reader was needed for the 9:00 am Mass. I am embarrassed to relate that I gave the announcement little thought. A week later, I found myself reading the same announcement in that Sunday’s bulletin. This time, I remember

thinking, “I hope they find someone.” Another week passed, and upon reading the same announcement once more, I realized that I was being called to be that “someone.” I have served as a Reader and Chalice Bearer ever since. Perhaps my story resonates with you? Please prayerfully consider what role you are called to play to support this blessed parish. Thank you for your prayers and support! You have my sincere best wishes for a prayerful Advent and joyous Christmas. May God bless all of you and may He continue to bless the parish of St. Michael’s bythe-Sea!

TO GIVE LIKE A CHILD BECKY GLEASON
“I made this for you Auntie Becky!” It warms my heart every time I hear those words, and not because I need another swirl of colors on a sheet of paper. When I look at the artwork from my nieces, I think of the little hands that worked so diligently and intentionally to create something just for me. Even — or maybe especially — these small, simple gifts make me feel special and loved. When my nieces draw pictures for me, it isn’t because someone asked them to - it’s because they want to. Kids are unfairly judged for not being able to share (something that continues to be a struggle throughout life). Despite this, children seem to have a deep understanding of the power of giving. They know how good it feels to receive, and, almost instinctively, they understand that giving is a way to show love. It’s something we do naturally for the people we care about. As families, we try to develop that understanding further by providing opportunities to give and by helping children see different perspectives. As a church family, we strive to do the same thing. The Children’s Ministry provides many opportunities for kids to give to others. Coins are collected for the annual Mite Can Outreach, in which children raise money to support a local charity. Lunches are prepared for the Sack Lunch Ministry every month. VBS campers raise donations for worthy causes. Carnations are shared to moms on Mother’s Day. Acolytes serve alongside St. Michael’s clergy at the altar. Even the Christmas Pageant is a way for the children of our parish to share joy with the larger community. Everyone at St. Michael’s plays a role in our church family. As adults, we are called to raise our children up in the faith. We are called to demonstrate a life of love and charity. The adults in our parish help foster the spiritual growth and emotional well-being of the children we interact with every week. Participating in outreach together and encouraging one another, we grow in relationship. I would urge us each to prayerfully examine the role we are called to play in our church family and consider what we have to give. I am grateful to be a part of a community that values each ole and continues to encourage and uplift our youngest members!
