St Martin-in-the-Fields Autumn and Winter Season

Page 1

WELCOME

Welcome to an inspiring new season of classical music here at St Martin-inthe-Fields. We are delighted to present a programme featuring cherished masterpieces and offering new discoveries.

This season, we once again welcome our principal orchestral partner, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, who perform in the very space where their legacy began; and our friends at the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestras for whom St Martin’s is their London home. Alongside them, we are honoured to host world-renowned soloists and ensembles with some stand out performances that will feature as highlights in London’s musical calendar.

2026 marks the 300th anniversary of St Martin-in-the-Fields and we look forward to announcing our full celebratory programme of events for the year in due course. However,

Love, war, and other enchantments: the warrior-hero of Handel’s Rinaldo battles sorcery as well as altogether more sensuous enemies. Rinaldo was Handel’s first Italian opera, and this fantastic tale of witchcraft, warfare and passion took London by storm when it opened – just around the corner from St Martin-inthe-Fields – in 1711. Handel used the finest performers of his day, and for this concert performance The English Concert is taking the same approach, with a cast that stars Mary Bevan and the ‘ravishing’ countertenor Aryreh Nussbaum Cohen. Handel at the top of his game – back in the West End after 314 years! Tickets:

Gabrieli Consort: Purcell’s Fairy Queen

The spells are undone, the lovers are united. Now Oberon weaves a new enchantment – an entertainment without parallel beneath the starlit canopy of a summer night. Purcell’s The Fairy Queen is A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but not remotely as you know it – there’s no Shakespeare, for a start! – and Paul Mc Creesh adores its wit, its magic and its sensuality. ‘I can’t think of anyone who could give a better rendition of this Restoration “feel-good” masterpiece’ says Presto Classical, but hear for yourself, in this exuberant concert performance.

The Sixteen: Handel’s Messiah

Handel Messiah

The Sixteen Choir and Orchestra

Harry Christophers director

‘We heard a realisation of Handel’s work that suggested it was written yesterday’, wrote Bachtrack when Harry Christophers’ legendary chamber choir The Sixteen performed Handel’s Messiah at St Martin-in-the-Fields in December 2022.

Now, following further sell-out performances in December 2023 and 2024, they’re bringing Messiah back again: an intimately scaled, historically informed interpretation, right here in the heart of the city that Handel called home. And with artists as fine as these, every note, every chorus and every beloved melody will sound more inspiring than ever.

This is Bach’s St John Passion; a masterpiece that speaks to the hearts and spirits of listeners of all faiths and none. Harry Christophers director

Lent is supposed to be a time of reflection and austerity, but everything’s relative, and in Portugal, in the 17th and 18th centuries, those weeks of fasting were the pretext for a feast of sacred music at its most emotionally-charged. Harry Christophers and his world-famous chamber choir The Sixteen invite us to the banquet today, and music as glorious as Lotti’s Crucifixus needs no introduction. But that’s just for starters. Savour yearning melodies, lush harmonies and soaring, impassioned prayers from Melgas, Caldara and Rebelo, as well as the blossoming, endlessly expressive imagination of Domenico Scarlatti.
