It is with great pride and excitement that we present this creative anthology, a collection of work that showcases the exceptional talents of our students at St Margaret’s School. The contributions in this anthology - ranging from poetry, fine art and dance, to claywork and STEM projects - are a testament to the vibrant and diverse co-curricular landscape that our school fosters.

At St Margaret’s, we believe that education extends far beyond the confines of traditional classroom learning. Our rich and diverse selection of co-curricular activities is a cornerstone of our educational philosophy, providing our students with myriad opportunities to explore their interests, develop new skills, and engage with the world in meaningful ways. This year students in the Senior School have had the option to choose from more than seventy co-curricular activities, in addition to their weekly enrichment slot This creative anthology reflects the dedication our students show to their co-curricular pursuits and we are immensely proud of their achievements.

The creative works in this anthology are also a reflection of the nurturing environment at St Margaret’s, where students are encouraged to express themselves and pursue their passions; each piece is a unique voice, contributing to a chorus of creativity that resonates throughout our school.

As you delve into this anthology, we hope you will be as inspired by our students' creativity and excellence as we are. Their work not only showcases their individual talents but also embodies the spirit of St Margaret’s School a spirit of curiosity, exploration, and a relentless pursuit of personal growth.

Enjoy the journey through the imaginative and thoughtful expressions of our young contributors.

fine art

Charmaine is an Art scholar, and created this portrait as part of a scholar’s project, using acrylic paint on canvas. She began by sketching the face in pencil, then painted section by section before putting a light wash over each section to give a more realistic undertone effect.

Charmaine’s painting is also featured on the front cover.

Charmaine

Evie

Evie created this portrait as part of her Art scholars work here at St Margaret’s. Her artwork is based on a photograph of one of her friends. She used acrylic paints to create it, basing it on the style of British painter Lucian Freud. She began with a sketch and then used a watery paint base to begin the painting, using streaks of paint instead of smooth lines to imitate Freud's style.

Isabella

In this piece, Isabella created a self-portrait. She admits this was difficult, having never created a portrait before, let alone one of herself. She used a range of layers to get the exact colours and tones necessary for her skin tone, using acrylic paint on canvas.

Demi

Demi has flourished as an artist throughout her time in Year 7. She has fully immersed herself in the various artistic opportunities on offer at St Margaret’s and gets involved in a range of activities. Demi uses art to express her feelings, and take a break from busy school life to do what she loves. This piece was created with paint on paper, and beautifully depicts the Solar System.

Nancy

Nancy is a STEM and Academic scholar at the School who has also shown her incredible talents in art over the past year. She worked on this portrait of her friend Evie over the course of a term, using acrylic on canvas to create this delicate piece of portraiture.

Sienna

Sienna joined the school at the beginning of this academic year, and has been busy getting stuck into a variety of sports and creative arts during that time. Her drawing here is one of imitation, drawing the other half of a baby orangutan. Sienna created the piece with pencil and a blending tool to create an ashy colour and texture for the drawing.

Victor

Victor has been with St Margaret’s for just under a year and is already making his artistic prowess known. Through his work in Art enrichment, he painted this impressive eye, using acrylic paint on canvas.

photography

Laila is a Year 12 student who is currently studying Photography at A-Level. Her picture here features a portrait shot of a face, created by experimenting with lighting and shadows.

Laila

Milly

Milly is a Drama scholar who is currently pursuing Photography at A-Level. She based her project on murder mystery, something she is exploring within her course, however she wanted to think more creatively about incorporating other techniques. She painted a design to look like an x-ray, then used photographic techniques to create the image.

Milly’s work is also featured on the inside back cover.

Gracie is our current Head of School. Her talents are varied, including being a Photography, Biology and Sports scholar. In this piece she has captured the bustling commotion of Times Square. Gracie used post processing software to adjust the opacity of each layer, creating a multi dimensional composition. The specific sequence of these layers takes the viewer's eyes on a journey through each layer, encouraging them to take in all the individual, intricate details.

Gracie’s image of the Empire State Building is also featured on the Contents page.

Gracie

poetry

Theo is a Year 12 Maths scholar who has been at St Margaret’s for 11 years. His poetry is based on mental health struggles, and how difficult it can be growing up in the ‘real world’ full of expectations of how to be.

Heart

Heart is an Academic scholar and boarder at St Margaret’s, who has been at the school for 3 years. Her poem sensitively captures the layers of sorrow and longing as she shares the haunting beauty of her recollections of her late father. Her poem becomes a tribute to love's lasting influence and the incomparable impact a father has on his daughter's spirit.

My father‘s eyes are nothing under the sunlight

His hair has lost the gloss in which it once drowned in

His hands are withered and shrivelled up

His smile, murdered by the unchanging pathway that is time

His laughter, etched into my memory, like a distant voice

Yet his love, across all boundaries, shines in every corner

Of my heart.

My eyes, just like his, no longer glimmered in the sun

My hair, just like his, has lost its gloss

My hands, just like his, have fallen and would no longer rise

My smile, just like his, had been murdered by time

My laughter, just like his, will remain a distance voice

Yet my soul, remains on this Earth, unlike his.

Isabel is a History scholar in Year 12 at St Margaret’s. In this piece of poetry, she was inspired by the different feelings and insecurities people tend to experience as they grow up. She puts these feelings into perspective; every ‘fault’ is simply a sign that we have lived, and to endure until you are ageing is something to be celebrated.

Isabel

Experience

We don’t look like we did when we were youngOf course we don’t.

How strange it would be

To have no one to look up to Or to comment -

“I hope I look like her at this age”

The plethora of experience gained Diminished to a number on a scale

Nothing more

Than a cumulation of bones, blood, sweat and tears

A relentless war

Despite endeavours from previous years

What a shame it would be

To not point out and say“that lady, over there; with the grey in her hair isn’t she stunning?”

Of course, she’s aged like fine wine

Welcoming it

In all its glory, Relishing in the fact That regardless Of the lines on her face, The furrow of her brow, And her deepest regrets, Nothing will change

The experience she has gained In her ninety-one years.

Ire is an Academic scholar who has a passion for many things - including science and poetry! Her poem about the different kinetic powers marries these two passions in an educational and interesting mix.

Ireoluwa

The Kinetics

Pyro is fire, as blazing and burning

Hydro is water, cascading and churning

Aero is wind, always flowing in your hair

And Geo is the earth, which you can find everywhere

Electro is electricity, with jolts and volts

Cryo is ice, freezing you to a halt

Astro is a star way above you and me

And Tycho is luck, something anyone might need.

clay & crafts

Charlie

Having joined the School in Year 7, Charlie has gotten stuck in right away to the wider activities on offer, including Art enrichment sessions. He has created a smooth, lightlydetailed piggy bank in these sessions in the shape of a monkey, which he painted, glazed and fired in the kiln.

Harrison, who joined St Margaret’s in 2023, is an Art scholar and has been making full use of the Art facilities at the School. He created this piggy bank in an Art enrichment session, shaping it beautifully to take the form of a dinosaur. Harrison

Kendra is an Art scholar who has been at St Margaret’s for just under a year. Her creative piggy bank was made using the pinch pot technique before glazing and firing, and is based on the design of a bear.

Kendra

Mayuri

Mayuri is a Music scholar who has been widening her interests over the last few years at St Margaret’s. As part of a co-curricular club, Mayuri made this puppet with her sister, who has special needs, in mind. The puppet has since become a staple family toy that they play with regularly.

Isabella

Isabella is an Art scholar who has created a wealth of impressive work over her 4 years at St Margaret’s. As part of the Puppets club, Isabella made a puppet inspired by the Muppets, using a range of fabrics, a foam skeleton, and purple fur. It was a challenge, but with the help of her teachers, Isabella was very happy with the overall result.

Moni is a Year 11 student who has been at St Margaret’s for 5 years. Moni used her creative skills to design a crocheted shoulder bag as a red accent to an outfit.

Incredibly, Moni created this bag through a YouTube tutorial, experiencing some challenges such as tying the bow; however, it turned out beautifully!

Monisola

writing

Zoe is a Year 8 student who has always loved to write. As a result, she has taken part in a number of creative writing competitions since joining the School and has been published in young writers’ anthologies. Her piece is inspired by her love for writing and dystopian films.

Run until the demons can’t catch you and the pain is just a dull ache.”

Szaira has developed her serious talents as a writer in the 4 years she has been at St Margaret’s. This is an excerpt of the play ‘Questionless Reason’, which Szaira wrote as part of the ‘New Views’ club and was subsequently performed in the Arts Festival. It is a dark comedy surrounding the interrogations that followed the death of absolutely fictional politician Horace Monson

The song delivers a key message of environmental protection and the close-minded nature of humanity, a topic Ana-Hibah feels passionately about. She enjoyed expressing that passion through singing this beautiful piece.
