To provide sustainable financial support to St Margaret’s College in partnership with our community.
Our Goal
To raise $10 million over 10 years to create a legacy for the future.
The St Margaret’s College Foundation was established in 2009 to generate and steward gifts and donations from the College community. We are a registered charity (CC42926) which operates as an independent professional entity under the direction of a Board of Trustees.
Foundation Chair welcome
As Chair of the St Margaret’s College Foundation, it is my pleasure to present the 2023 Philanthropy Report, to reflect on our accomplishments and the impact of our work over the past year.
The Foundation’s vision is to create a legacy for the future. It is this vision that guides every decision we make and throughout 2023, we remained steadfast in our commitment to provide sustainable financial support to St Margaret’s College in partnership with our community.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors and the dedication of our community partners, I am pleased to report that The Foundation has continued to mature financially.
Collaboration has been a cornerstone of our approach and in 2023 we continued our strategic partnerships with Lexus of Christchurch, Fife Foundation and the Trident Homes Tactix, leveraging collective strengths and resources to drive positive change for our College and our community.
None of our accomplishments would have been possible without the dedication and support of our donors, trustees, staff, and partners.
On behalf of The Foundation, I extend my deepest gratitude to each and every individual who has contributed to our advancement in the past year.
As we look to the future, we are poised to build upon the groundwork we have laid in 2023. Guided by our commitment to supporting the long-term needs of the College, we look forward to the launch of our capital campaign ‘Creating a legacy for the future’ later in 2024.
In closing, I want to express my sincere appreciation for the opportunity to serve as Chair. It is a privilege to
lead a charitable entity that is dedicated to nurturing a culture and tradition of generosity and to support the College in its vision to create empathetic, confident and connected global citizens, who strive to make a positive difference.
Thank you for your continued support.

Executive Principal report
The year 2023 marked another remarkable period for the St Margaret’s College Foundation, and I am proud of the significant impact that the culture of philanthropy continues to have on our College.
As a community, we have embraced the spirit of generosity to influence the lives of others. Our commitment to St Margaret’s College’s ultimate founding principle, Higher Purpose, underscores our dedication to serving others with grace and gratitude. Collaborating with our community, we strive to cultivate a culture of generosity that motivates our students to make meaningful contributions to society.
Beyond our College walls, philanthropy has enabled us to make an impact in the broader community. Through partnerships with organisations and initiatives such as Fife Foundation, The Anglican Ministry and UNICEF, we have been able to address local, national and international social challenges and contribute to positive change.
Developing a philanthropic disposition in the young women of St Margaret’s offers numerous benefits, including creating a deeper understanding and empathy for others’ circumstances. It encourages a compassionate mindset and a sense of responsibility towards the wellbeing of their communities and the world.
Participating in philanthropic efforts helps young women develop essential leadership skills such as communication, project management,
and problem-solving, as well as self-esteem, resilience, and a sense of purpose. It also encourages greater social awareness, exposing our girls to various social issues, increasing their awareness and understanding of global challenges. This heightened awareness can inspire them to become advocates for change and work towards social justice well beyond their time at school, evidenced by our many alumnae globally who are making valuable contributions to their communities.
I would like to extend my gratitude to all of our donors and supporters who have contributed to the success of our philanthropic efforts. Your generosity and commitment to The Foundation are truly inspiring, and we are thankful for your partnership.
As we look to the future, philanthropy will continue to be a driving force behind our efforts to continue to provide an exceptional educational experience for every student at St Margaret’s. Together, we will continue to invest in the future leaders, innovators, and changemakers who will shape the world for generations to come.
Thank you for your continued support. I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead, and I look forward to our journey together.
Diana Patchett Executive Principal St Margaret’s College
Transforming futures: The partnership with Fife Foundation
Headquartered in Ōtautahi Christchurch, with a presence across Australia and New Zealand, Fife Foundation is renowned for supporting grassroots and global charitable efforts that create lasting change for people and the planet. Its mission encompasses vital areas such as childhood education, health and sustainability, all while inspiring compassion and empathy within the public sphere.
Fife Foundation was founded by St Margaret’s College Old Girl Gina Satterthwaite (née Gough), and was inspired by past generations like her mother, Old Girl Lesley Glasson and grandmother Margaret Fife. Margaret’s legacy of hard work and leadership also permeates Fife Foundation’s mission, which focuses on commitment, compassion, reciprocity, and creativity. With family roots in New Zealand spanning over a century, Fife Foundation today continues the endeavours of previous generations, aiming to accelerate actions that benefit our local and global community.
At its core, Fife Foundation is dedicated to inspiring compassion and empathy. The partnership with St Margaret’s is geared to fostering a culture of giving and community service among its students. Volunteering opportunities allow girls to engage with and contribute to their communities through both a local charity - Full Bellies, and an international cause, The Tanzania Project.
By integrating these values into the educational experience, Fife Foundation and the College are nurturing a generation of compassionate, socially responsible young individuals poised to make a difference in the world.
The collaboration between the College and Fife Foundation is built on a shared legacy of philanthropy and innovation. With Fife’s strong and innovative team, its annual events continually evolve, demonstrating a commitment to each charity through unique and enjoyable activities. This collaboration with the College is united by common goals, creating authentic and engaging experiences for our community.
Driving towards a sustainable future: In partnership with Lexus of Christchurch
In an era where sustainability is paramount, innovative collaborations between businesses and educational institutions are paving the way for a greener tomorrow.
Lexus of Christchurch, a leading luxury automotive brand, has long been committed to environmental stewardship. With a range of hybrid and electric vehicles, Lexus continually strives to reduce its carbon footprint and promote eco-friendly driving. Its dedication to sustainability extends beyond its products, as it actively seeks to engage with and support the community in initiatives that align with its green ethos.
St Margaret’s College shares a similar vision of sustainability. The College is committed to the wellbeing of our people and our planet by incorporating sustainable practices wherever possible. Recognising the potential for a powerful partnership, Lexus of Christchurch and the College joined forces to champion sustainability together.
One example of this is a collaboration to promote green transportation solutions. The dealership has provided the College with an electric vehicle, reducing its reliance on fossil fuels, lowering its carbon emissions and inspiring students and staff to consider eco-friendly transport alternatives in their own lives.
Lexus of Christchurch is proud to partner with the College in this journey towards a sustainable future, making a lasting impact on the environment and the community. Through education, innovation, and a shared commitment to green practices, our partnership is shaping a brighter, more sustainable tomorrow for generations to come.

Empowering futures: Educating Girls Globally
In 2013, Educating Girls Globally (EGG) was founded by St Margaret’s College students Gussie Cohen and Lucy Tothill with a bold and inspiring mission to unite high school students worldwide in the fight for girls’ education. Over the past decade, EGG has remained steadfast in its commitment, raising over $100,000 NZD to support girls’ education globally. This dedication has led to significant improvements in educational standards in developing regions, particularly in Malawi, through targeted projects at girls’ schools and the Dzaleka Refugee Camp.
Today, the College proudly continues its partnership with what is now the EGG Trust, reinforcing a shared vision for a brighter, more equitable future.
The College has been instrumental in supporting EGG’s initiatives, actively engaging its students in fundraising efforts and awareness campaigns through a studentled EGG Committee. This partnership instils a sense of global responsibility and empathy in the students, helping shape them into compassionate leaders of tomorrow.
The ethos of the EGG Trust is rooted in the power of collective action. By fundraising within our own communities, students contribute to a global cause, demonstrating that local efforts can have far-reaching impacts. The biennial EGGSTRAVAGANZA show and SMC Sleepover are just a few of the creative ways students have rallied support for girls’ education, engaging girls from the Junior School upwards.
The partnership between the EGG Trust and the College exemplifies the profound impact of collective action and shared vision, creating a sustainable path towards global equity and prosperity.

Unveiling generosity: A parent’s gift of innovation
St Margaret’s College has recently received a remarkable gift from a current parent – an EPro8 kit for the College’s Centre of Innovation which promotes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). This generous contribution exemplifies the spirit of community in empowering girls to learn, live and lead.
The Centre of Innovation serves as a hub for creativity, exploration, and hands-on learning. It is here that our students engage in interdisciplinary projects, harnessing technology and design thinking to solve real-world challenges. The addition of this EPro8 kit to the Centre’s existing suite of resources enhances teaching and learning capabilities, providing students with advanced tools to develop their thinking and inspire their creativity.
EPro8 teaches students how to problem solve within the fields of engineering and innovation. The College
has a long history of involvement in EPro8, with girls participating in inter-school challenges at the highest levels from the Junior School through to Senior School. The new EPro8 kit allows students to design, build, and test solutions using a wide range of components, from motors and sensors to structural elements and software interfaces. With this kit, students can explore further the principles of engineering, physics, and problem-solving in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
This gift not only enhances educational resources but also underscores the importance of investing in technology to provide students with the tools they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
The College extends its gratitude to the current parent for this valued gift to the Centre of Innovation, which enhances our educational offerings and our ability to ignite in our girls a passion for the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Celebrating the season: The inaugural Festival of Christmas
The St Margaret’s College community ushered in the festive season with the inaugural Festival of Christmas, hosted by the St Margaret’s College Foundation in December 2023. The event marked a new tradition for the College, bringing together students, staff, families, and the wider Anglican community in a joyous celebration of the holiday spirit.
The festival was led by College Warden, The Rt Revd Bishop Dr Peter Carrell, Chaplain Rev Stephanie Clay and former Chaplain Rev Peg Riley. Representatives from the Trust Board, The Foundation, the Old Girls’ Association, and the Parents and Friends Association each delivered a reading, followed by festive carols and reflections.
Following the formal proceedings, guests were invited to share in traditional Christmas fare. We now look forward to making The Foundation Festival of Christmas an annual event that brings seasonal joy and unity to our St Margaret’s community. We hope to see as many of you as possible at the 2024 event on Thursday 12 December in the College Chapel.
A hole-in-one: Our first Foundation Golf Day
The St Margaret’s College Foundation hosted its first-ever Golf Day at the Christchurch Golf Club in October 2023. With clearish skies and perfect playing conditions, participants enjoyed a day of friendly competition in support of The Foundation.
Congratulations to Ben Bridge and his team on their victory, and our thanks to our sponsors Upright Scaffolding and BMS Risk Group and to Matt Sawyer and all our participants for making this event memorable.
We are grateful to Darren Shand for his generous donation of an All Blacks signed jersey, which added a special touch to the hospitality that followed our time on the green. This coveted item attracted significant interest and helped boost fundraising efforts. Our thanks also go to Lexus of Christchurch who offered a luxury SUV for the first player to hit a hole in one –unfortunately no one came close!
Thanks to the generosity of our participants, donors, and sponsors, we raised close to $10,000. This was donated to the St Margaret’s College Endowment
Fund, which plays a crucial role in supporting the long-term sustainability and growth of our College.
Our inaugural Golf Day has set a high standard for future events. We are excited to build on this momentum through our 2024 Golf Day on Friday 25 October. Here’s to many more successful events in the future.

Student fundraising: Charitable giving
Central to St Margaret’s College is our founding value of Higher Purpose. This dedication to serving others with grace and gratitude has been evidenced in the various student service initiatives implemented during 2023, led by student committees including Chapel, Service, Educating Girls Globally (EGG) and Wellbeing.
Student-led initiatives range from giving time in support of Sony Camp (a residential camp for children with disabilities that gives respite to their families), planting native trees and plants to populate the former red zone in Christchurch, and to assist Full Bellies with the preparation of lunch bags for school children whose families need a helping hand. Students also lead fundraising activities for their local and global communities. In 2023 these included the Hawke’s Bay Relief Fund and the Sleep Tight Pyjama Appeal, and organising our College community’s contribution to the Christchurch City Mission Christmas Appeal.
Total donations to external organisations $25,708.56
“Student service isn’t just about giving back; it’s about creating a ripple effect of positive change, cultivating compassionate leaders through service and fostering a sense of belonging within our communities. It is in serving others that we discover the true essence of education: to uplift, empower, and inspire.”

Celebrating our sponsors: Partners in excellence at St Margaret’s College
St Margaret’s College is privileged to have the support of our esteemed sponsors whose generosity plays a pivotal role in enriching our student programmes and co curricular activities.
Our 2023 ‘Legally Blonde The Musical’ production sponsors – Taylor Shaw Barristers and Solicitors, PAK’nSAVE, Mainland Capital, The Mediterranean Food Company, Caxton Design and Print, and our Parents and Friends Association (PFA) - demonstrated a commitment to our College’s mission and values, enabling students in our Middle and Senior Schools to participate in an industry-standard production, whether performing on stage or gaining experience behind the scenes.
Our appreciation must also go to our 2022/2023 rowing sponsors of Farrell Construction, BMS Risk Group, Golden Homes, Schick Civil Construction, The Good Oil, Craigs Investment Partners (Jeremy Flood, Jeremy Krang and Sarah Aimer), Moore Walker Davey Searells Ltd, Think Water Canterbury, Storeasy, Mark Tutton – Harcourts Grenadier, Dynamite Signs and Team Hutchinson Ford. Their collective sponsorship ensured our girls were successful both on and off the water with access to one of New Zealand’s premier rowing programmes.
We are also thankful to the sponsors of our inaugural Golf Tournament – BMS Risk Group and Upright Scaffolding – who ensured our first golf day was a success.
Sponsorship at St Margaret’s is not merely financial support; it is a testament to the belief in our girls’ potential and the importance of investing in their future. We celebrate our sponsors for their generosity and dedication to helping the College create transformative experiences that shape the lives of our students for years to come.
If you would like to be involved in sponsorship at the College please be in contact with Foundation Manager Erin Reeve – foundation@stmargarets.school.nz
Continuing our legacy of excellence on the water: St Margaret’s College Rowing
The St Margaret’s College 2023/2024 rowing team has continued to build on last season’s success with a significantly larger squad and strong interest from students. A team of 56 rowers participated in the Aon Maadi Regatta, with outstanding results: 4 Gold, 1 Silver, and 1 Bronze. The College is currently ranked third in New Zealand overall (Star Trophy) and second overall New Zealand sweep school (Executive Trophy).
Following Maadi, several of our rowers were selected for representative teams. Five students were chosen for the South Island U18 Team – Ellie Scotland, Bella Harris, Lucy Tod, Ava Readman and Aine Leeson, and Coco Flood was also selected for the New Zealand Junior Rowing Team for the World Championships in St. Catharines, Canada. This is the highest number selected from the College for the South Island team to date.
Our rowers’ achievements are testament to the support they receive from our sponsors, parents, school community, and exceptional coaching staff. Our coaching and management team, with its wealth of experience, has been invaluable to our success.
Over the past season, our priority has been the upgrade of our safety boats. Thanks to our sponsors and fundraising efforts, we replaced our Takacats with more modern, reliable vessels. Looking ahead we plan to replace our smaller boats and motors and focus on a coxed four and a coxless pair for the upcoming season. Additionally, progress continues on our Kaiapoi base, negotiating with the Waimakariri Council to enhance river access for us and other users.
We are deeply thankful to our generous sponsors whose donations enable us to maintain our equipment to the highest standard. Over the years, past and present parents have dedicated their efforts to ensure
our boat replacement plan continues. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all our rowing partners whose generous support empowers our girls to achieve their best.
We extend our thanks to those parents whose daughters will graduate from the College this year for their many hours of service and support for our rowing programme. Their invaluable input has been crucial in ensuring the continued success and development of our rowing team.
We are incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated team of parents and supporters, along with generous sponsors and highly experienced staff. Together, we achieve great things for our girls.

A legacy of giving: Old Girl Jennifer Hart’s transformational bequest
The St Margaret’s College Foundation is deeply grateful for the transformative bequest of more than $1 million from the Estate of Old Girl Jennifer Hart (née Roberts). This extraordinary gift reflects Jennifer’s deep connection to the College, (which she attended until 1954 as a boarder), and her enduring commitment to the values and mission of St Margaret’s. Jennifer cherished her time at the College, and attributed much of her personal and professional success to the education and support she received.
Her generosity will have a profound and lasting impact on future generations of girls, by significantly strengthening The Foundation’s ability to enhance the College’s programmes and opportunities provided to its students.
Jennifer’s bequest is testament to her appreciation for the education she received, and her desire to give back to the school that played such a pivotal role in her life. Her act of philanthropy underscores the vital role education plays in creating a better world, and provides substantial support to the College in continuing its tradition of excellence and innovation for years to come.
We are incredibly appreciative of Jennifer and her generous bequest. As stewards of her legacy, The Foundation is ensuring that her gift is used wisely, for lasting and meaningful impact.
Understanding tax benefits: Donating to the St Margaret’s College Foundation
Donating to charitable causes in New Zealand (like the St Margaret’s College Foundation) allows individuals and businesses to support important initiatives close to their heart and also offers significant tax benefits that can make their generosity more impactful.
In order to claim the 33.33% tax credits for donations through The Foundation, we issue receipts and acknowledgement letters for all donations of $5 or more. These documents serve as proof of the donation and are necessary when filing tax returns through the Inland Revenue Department (IRD).
There are a few ways to ensure the impact of your generosity benefits both parties, for example regular contributions can help maximise tax benefits over time, especially for individuals who donate each year or alternatively, individuals can donate directly from their salary or wages through payroll giving schemes. This allows donations to be made before tax is deducted, providing immediate tax benefits.
Donations of assets such as shares, property, or artworks can also qualify for tax benefits. Donating appreciating assets can potentially allow donors to avoid paying capital gains tax while receiving a deduction for the fair market value of the asset.
Beyond the financial incentives, donating to The Foundation helps contribute to the long-term sustainability of the College and encourages donors to align their generosity to the goals and mission of St Margaret’s. This dual benefit not only encourages philanthropy but also strengthens the capacity of The Foundation to make a positive impact.
NB: The Foundation recommends seeking professional accounting advice to ensure accurate financial planning and compliance with tax regulations.
Spring is in the air: Our annual Spring Lunch in review
The St Margaret’s College Foundation held its firstever Spring Lunch at the beautiful Ilex Café in the Christchurch Botanical Gardens in September 2023. The event brought together members of our community to celebrate the season with elegance and camaraderie, strengthening the bonds of our special St Margaret’s community.
Guests were greeted with seasonal canapés, while enjoying live music played by our student string quartet, before enjoying lunch and a presentation by current parent and fashion stylist, Lou Heller. Lou shared her insights into the world of fashion, providing a lowdown on the latest trends, timeless style tips, and the importance of personal expression.
Our thanks go to Lou for her inspiring talk, to Jemima Ainsworth and Georgie Inglis, for their styling and creative vision for the event, our talented musicians, and to everyone who attended and contributed to making this event such a success.
Here’s to the joy of Spring and the promise of many more delightful gatherings to come!

Strengthening community ties: In collaboration with the Trident Homes Tactix
Providing opportunities for girls to find and participate in the sports they love is a central pillar of St Margaret’s College’s purpose. As part of its commitment to supporting women’s sports, the College has announced its commercial association with the Trident Homes Tactix netball team as an Official Partner. This partnership signifies a shared commitment to promoting excellence in sports, wellbeing, and connection and belonging.
The partnership brings a host of exciting opportunities and benefits for our students, staff, and the broader community. By aligning with the Trident Homes Tactix, the College is not only supporting professional netball but also enriching the educational and athletic experiences of our own students. The opportunities provided through this collaboration will inspire our young athletes, enhance our sports programmes, and strengthen our community bonds.
Our girls benefit from attending coaching and training sessions with the Trident Homes Tactix and you will often see our performing arts students entertaining the crowd at half time during the games.
In 2023 students were given opportunities to attend Tactix matches, to meet and be inspired by athletes at the very top of their game, and to collaborate on an initiative in support of the Kindness Collective Foundation pyjama drive to donate warm sleepwear to New Zealand children living in poverty.
Celebrating generosity and fostering connections: Our Parents and Friends Association
The Parents and Friends Association (PFA) of St Margaret’s College serves as a link between parents, caregivers and the wider College community, and as a gateway for parents and caregivers to become involved in the College.
In 2023, the PFA contributed a total of $53,959.48 (GST incl) to fund educational resources across various faculties, as well as financial support to enable the College to provide its Year 9-13 girls with the opportunity to experience an industry-standard performing arts production through its sponsorship of ‘Legally Blonde The Musical’.
The support the PFA provides to the College (together with welcoming and connecting our parents and caregiver community) plays a crucial role in ensuring our girls enjoy a supportive and engaging learning environment.
Enhancing visibility and reach: The Foundation Business Directory
Since its inception, The Foundation Business Directory has become an invaluable resource for our College community. This initiative, launched to foster connections and support within our network, has exceeded expectations in terms of engagement, collaboration, and growth. It supports our vibrant and entrepreneurial St Margaret’s business community.
Launched alongside SMC Connect, our online community portal, the Business Directory was designed with a clear vision: to create a platform where alumni, parents, and friends of the College could promote their businesses and services. It has enabled our community members to connect professionally and support each other’s ventures, reinforcing the strong bonds that characterise the St Margaret’s spirit.
Our goal is to ensure that the directory remains a dynamic and valuable resource for all members. Each month, we profile one of these businesses online, and we are pleased to announce that the site has received over 6,000 hits since its launch in January 2024.
We encourage all members of the St Margaret’s College community to explore the directory, support listed businesses, and consider adding your own enterprises.
