Foundation Chair welcome

As Chair of the St Margaret’s College Foundation, I am pleased to share an exciting milestone in our journey. The launch of our $10 million Creating a Legacy for the Future campaign is a transformative initiative designed to create a lasting legacy for generations of St Margaret’s students to come. This campaign is pivotal in fulfilling our vision, establishing a future-proofed Endowment Fund that will foster long-term growth for the College. With $2 million already committed, we are paving the way for future generations of girls to be empowered through a world-class education.

Philanthropy has always been the cornerstone of The Foundation’s work, and with the establishment of our Endowment Fund, we are securing a future where our impact extends far beyond today. This campaign is an opportunity to rally behind our College, ensuring that St Margaret’s girls continue to receive opportunities across academia, the arts, sport, and leadership.

By investing in this campaign, we are shaping the leaders of tomorrow, fostering innovation, and safeguarding the core values that define our College. This campaign presents a unique opportunity for our donors, partners, and supporters to make a meaningful, long-lasting impact - one that will resonate for generations.

I am deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed to making this campaign a reality. From our passionate donors and supporters to our dedicated Foundation Trustees, your commitment drives our vision for the future.

As we embark on this journey, I invite each of you to be a part of this legacy. Whether through contributions, advocacy, or simply sharing our story, your support is invaluable.

Executive Principal report

At St Margaret’s College, we are deeply committed to offering an education that best reflects the ways in which girls learn, develop, and succeed. Achieving and maintaining this level of excellence requires not only vision and dedication but also the essential support of our wider community. One of the most significant ways in which this support manifests is through our newly launched Endowment Fund campaign, Creating a Legacy for the Future.

Our Endowment Fund is essential to our College’s future, ensuring that we can continue to provide exceptional education, state-of-the-art facilities, and enriching extracurricular programmes. It allows us to offer scholarships, attract and retain outstanding educators, and enhance the learning environment in ways that directly benefit our students. More importantly, it secures the long-term sustainability of the College, safeguarding the legacy of excellence for generations to come.

None of this would be possible without the generosity and foresight of our donors. To those who have committed to supporting the Endowment Fund, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your contributions are not just financial; they are investments in the future of our young women, empowering them with the tools and confidence they need to excel in an ever-changing world.

It is through your belief in our vision and your generosity that we can continue to inspire, challenge, and nurture the next generation of leaders. Thank you for being a vital part of this journey.

Together, we are creating a legacy for the future.

With gratitude.

Strengthening communities: Fife Foundation

The partnership between St Margaret’s College and Fife Foundation is a testament to the power of collective action and shared values. Together, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of those in need, whether through our work with local charity Full Bellies or globally in support of The Tanzania Project.

These collaborations are made even more meaningful through our special connection with Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Fife Foundation, St Margaret’s Old Girl Gina Satterthwaite (née Gough, Class of 1984). Her dedication to philanthropy and passion for service continue to inspire our community. As a leader and role model, she exemplifies the profound impact one individual can have in driving change. As an alumna, she embodies the values of compassion, resilience, and service that we strive to instill in every St Margaret’s student.

The Full Bellies initiative is a crucial part of our partnership, ensuring that local children have access to essential nutrition. Through fundraising efforts, hands-on volunteering, and community engagement, St Margaret’s has been instrumental in supporting this programme. Our students and staff have embraced

this initiative wholeheartedly, understanding that food security is fundamental to education and wellbeing.

Our work with The Tanzania Project aligns with our commitment to global citizenship and learning through service. This initiative focuses on providing educational resources, infrastructure improvements, and sustainable community development in Tanzania. With the support of Fife Foundation, our contributions are creating lasting change, offering young people greater opportunities for the future. The direct involvement of our students in fundraising and awareness campaigns has deepened their understanding of social responsibility and international development.

We look forward to the continuation of the relationship between St Margaret’s and Fife Foundation, ensuring that our efforts make a meaningful and lasting impact on communities both locally and globally. We are sincerely grateful to Gina and the team at Fife Foundation for their valued partnership and support.

Together, we are building a legacy of service, generosity, and positive change.

Accelerating change: Lexus of Christchurch

In step with its firm focus on the future, corporate social responsibility, and community spirit, Lexus of Christchurch has renewed its philanthropic partnership with the St Margaret’s College Foundation for a third consecutive year. This collaboration is built on shared values of excellence, leadership, and giving back, while strengthening community ties.

The partnership, which began in 2022, was formed on a mutual desire to support educational advancement and foster the next generation of empowered female leaders. St Margaret’s has long been known for its holistic approach to education, emphasising academic achievement, character development, leadership, and service.

Lexus of Christchurch, a brand synonymous with innovation, craftsmanship, and social responsibility, saw a natural alignment with our College’s ethos.

“Our continued collaboration with St Margaret’s College represents more than a sponsorship - it’s a shared commitment to shaping a better future,” says Lexus of Christchurch Chief Executive Officer, Aaron Frazer. “We are proud to support young women who are passionate about making a difference in their communities and beyond.”

For St Margaret’s, the partnership not only provides electric vehicle support but also brings real-world inspiration into the classroom. “Having Lexus of Christchurch as a partner allows our students to see the direct impact that visionary leadership and corporate responsibility can have,” says Erin Reeve, Foundation Manager. “It demonstrates to our girls that success and giving back can - and should - go hand in hand.”

As we enter the third year of our partnership, we are looking ahead to even greater impact. At a time when strategic philanthropy is more important than ever, this partnership stands as a shining example of how business and education can unite for lasting social good.

Student fundraising: Higher purpose in action

Each year, St Margaret’s College students engage enthusiastically in a wide range of charitable giving initiatives, demonstrating their commitment to serving others with grace and gratitude. From fundraising for local shelters to supporting global causes, their efforts reflect a deep sense of compassion and responsibility.

These acts of generosity are lived expressions of St Margaret’s founding value of Dedication to a Higher Purpose. By working collaboratively with the wider community, our students experience the uplifting of those in need and are inspired to become thoughtful, socially conscious leaders who strive to make a meaningful difference in the world.

Why I support St Margaret’s College: A donor’s perspective on enabling student scholarships

“When I think about the person I am today, I trace it back to my time at St Margaret’s College where I started school as a five year old. My 13 years at St Margaret’s were more than just an education - they were a time of growth, learning, and above all lifelong friendships.

That’s why, as an Old Girl and proud donor, I choose to support student scholarships. I believe every young woman who walks through St Margaret’s doors deserves the chance to grow into her fullest potential, just as I did.

Supporting student scholarships isn’t just about giving money. It’s about investing in the dreams and futures of remarkable young girls. I know that the St Margaret’s community continues to foster curiosity, compassion, and purpose, and that girls who walk through our gates with financial support from others don’t take anything for granted. They work hard, lead boldly, and carry on the values that make St Margaret’s such a special place.

I give because I want today’s students to feel supported, empowered, and seen. I give because I know how hard it can be to ask for help, and how transformative it can be to receive it. I give because St Margaret’s believed in me before I fully believed in myself, and now it’s my turn to pass on that belief. I know that the gift of education is life changing and it has been a pleasure to follow students through their journey at St Margaret’s and play an active role in their growth and development.

To fellow Old Girls and friends - if St Margaret’s shaped your life in any meaningful way, I encourage you to consider giving back. Whether your gift is large or small, your support matters. You’re not just funding an education - you’re helping shape a future.”

‘The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit’.

Introducing the 1910 Society: A legacy of lasting impact

The St Margaret’s College Foundation is proud to announce the launch of the 1910 Society, a new philanthropic initiative that honours and celebrates those who choose to leave a legacy gift in their Will to the College. The 1910 Society ensures that the values and traditions that have shaped generations of students continue to flourish well into the future.

The 1910 Society is a commitment to shaping the future of young women of tomorrow. Members of the Society will join a community of like-minded individuals who believe in the transformative power of education and wish to leave a meaningful, enduring gift.

Most importantly, they will have the satisfaction of knowing they are playing a critical role in preserving the legacy of St Margaret’s College by empowering young women to become confident, compassionate leaders in a rapidly changing world.

The launch of the 1910 Society marks a significant milestone in the College’s ongoing evolution. As we look ahead to the next chapter, we warmly invite Old Girls, families, and friends of the College to consider joining this special community of donors.

By including St Margaret’s in your Will, you become a vital part of our story, honouring the past, supporting the present, and investing in the promise of the future.

“Leaving a gift in your Will ensures that the legacy of learning continues to flourish long after you’re gone. It’s not just an investment in education; it’s a testament to your belief in shaping brighter futures for generations to come”.

Rowing to success

St Margaret’s College Rowing is about more than just early mornings, ergometers, and seat racing. With dedicated coaches, staff, sponsors, and passionate rowing families, we foster a strong support network that empowers our athletes to thrive throughout the season and beyond.

Through multiple fundraising and sponsorship initiatives, more than $50,000 was raised through our rowing programme to purchase a new coaching boat and motor.

These gifts enhanced the fleet’s capabilities and contributed to the success of the season.

A special thanks goes to the Rowing Parent Committee, whose dedication goes beyond assisting at training camps, cooking, and setting up base at regattas. They also play a vital role in fundraising and securing sponsorships, ensuring the success of our rowing programme.

St Margaret’s Rowing Manager Trudy Keys says, “We are incredibly fortunate to have a dedicated network of volunteers who support our rowers behind the scenes, helping them reach their full potential. The efforts of our parents are truly valued and deeply appreciated by both the girls and coaches.”

Strengthening talent and community through sponsorship: 2024 in review

In 2024, the generous support of our sponsors has enriched the sports and performing arts programmes at St Margaret’s College.

In sport, our girls have benefitted from additional equipment and resources, leading to notable successes in national and regional competitions. Whether on the court, the field, or the water, our teams have shown resilience, skill, and spirit, supported by the facilities and opportunities made possible through sponsorship.

In the performing arts, sponsorship has played a key role in supporting our major productions, music ensembles, and dance performances. From staging our incredible “Mary Poppins The Musical” whole school production to enabling participation in national festivals, these contributions have enhanced the creative pursuits of our students and provided platforms for them to shine.

Equally as important to the tangible outcomes are the relationships we have cultivated. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to engage with our business community, partners who share in our vision and invest in the potential of our young people. These partnerships have fostered a sense of shared purpose, where businesses and educators come together to empower the next generation of leaders, athletes, artists, and creators.

We extend our thanks to every sponsor who stood beside us in 2024. Your support has elevated our cocurricular programmes and affirmed the powerful role that community plays in the life of our College. Thank you for believing in the future we’re building at St Margaret’s.

Annual Appeal - It’s her turn: Balanced foundations, bright futures

The St Margaret’s College Foundation is pleased to report on the successful conclusion of the 2024 Annual Appeal, themed “It’s her turn – Balanced foundations, bright futures.” The campaign marked a pivotal chapter in The Foundation’s ongoing mission to build a strong and sustainable future through our Endowment Fund.

Through the collective generosity of our community, we raised over $140,000. This extraordinary result is a testament to the commitment of our supporters and the power of engagement. The highlight of our campaign was a compelling video that resonated deeply with viewers, and was recognised at the international EducatePlus awards in September 2024.

We now look ahead with excitement to the 115th anniversary of our College. In celebration of this milestone, we will align our 2025 Annual Appeal with the College’s Founders’ Day celebrations in September 2025.

On behalf of The Foundation, heartfelt thanks go to everyone who contributed to the 2024 Annual Appeal’s success - our donors, volunteers, and our Foundation Trustees, whose 100% participation once again exemplifies outstanding leadership and commitment.

With each gift, we strengthen the foundations of our College and brighten the futures of the young women who walk through our College gates. We look forward to continuing this journey with you in 2025 and beyond.

Celebrating community and giving: A look back at events in 2024

In 2024 the St Margaret’s College community again came together in meaningful ways, through generous support, shared experiences, and genuine connection. A series of popular events brought together supporters, parents, Old Girls, staff, and friends. These occasions strengthened relationships and celebrated the spirit that defines our College. We reflect on three standout moments from the year - the Annual Spring Lunch, the St Margaret’s Golf Tournament, and the much-loved Festival of Christmas.

Annual Spring Lunch at Ilex Café

In early September, the Annual Spring Lunch, sponsored by Ballantynes, brought together a beautiful gathering of current and past parents and Old Girls in the elegant surrounds of Ilex Café in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Always a highlight of our calendar, this year’s event was no exception, filled with laughter, warm conversation, and a shared appreciation for St Margaret’s and a love of fashion!

St Margaret’s Golf Tournament – Driving support forward

Held in November at the Christchurch Golf Club, the St Margaret’s Golf Tournament saw players take to the course in generous but competitive spirits. With the support of sponsors BMS Risk Group and Upright Scaffolding, players, and volunteers, the event raised over $10,000 in support of St Margaret’s initiatives - an incredible achievement and a demonstration of the strength of our community.

Teams competed in a friendly and energetic atmosphere, enjoying a day of sunshine, camaraderie, and purpose, buoyed by the chance to win a brand new Lexus SUV in our Hole in One competition.

The Festival of Christmas – A joyful celebration for all

December brought with it one of the most heartening events of the year, The Festival of Christmas. This much-anticipated celebration brought together the entire St Margaret’s community - students, families, staff, and Old Girls. The Festival was a wonderful reminder of the values that unite us, of faith, family, and the joy of giving.

Looking ahead

These events reflect what makes the St Margaret’s community so special. We are grateful to everyone who participated, volunteered, donated, or supported us in any way throughout the year.

The impact of global gifts: Giving without borders

In today’s interconnected world, generosity knows no borders. At St Margaret’s College, we are privileged to see this truth come to life through the growing impact of global gifts - donations made by Old Girls, families, and friends from around the world who continue to feel a deep connection to the College, no matter how far they roam.

St Margaret’s has a proud history of shaping women of purpose, compassion, and resilience. Many of our graduates have taken these values with them to all corners of the globe. Their ongoing support through international giving strengthens our community and reinforces the enduring legacy of a St Margaret’s education.

From London to Hong Kong, from Sydney to Singapore, global donors are helping to grow our Endowment Fund, ensuring future generations of girls have access to the same life-changing opportunities.

Thanks to modern technology and secure digital platforms, giving from overseas has never been easier. Whether you’re a past parent living abroad, an Old Girl working internationally, or simply someone who believes in our mission, your gift can be made quickly and confidently online.

Each year, the international gifts we receive continue to grow - both in number and size. These donations send a powerful message to current students - you are part of a global sisterhood that believes in your potential.

To our global St Margaret’s community - thank you. Your contributions are a vital part of our story. You remind us that the values instilled at St Margaret’s travel well beyond our gates. Giving globally has never been easier, and its impact never greater.

Together, no matter where we are, we can continue to make a difference.

Amber Gazzard’s legacy: A transformational gift to our archives

St Margaret’s College is honoured to acknowledge an extraordinary act of generosity from Old Girl Amber Gazzard (Class of 1955), who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, 16 July 2024, at the age of 82.

Amber has left a remarkable bequest of over six hundred thousand dollars to the College. Along with supporting the growth and development of our Endowment Fund, this significant bequest will support and strengthen our archives programme. It is a transformational gift that will ensure the preservation and celebration of our College’s history far into the future, providing dedicated resources, infrastructure, and opportunities to care for the stories, documents, and memories that define St Margaret’s.

Amber’s passion for history and her pride in the College’s heritage were evident throughout her life. For many years, she volunteered weekly in the Archives, bringing her sharp eye, attention to detail, and deep knowledge of the College’s past to the role. She took great joy in helping to uncover and document the experiences of those who came before and considered this work a way of giving back to a place that had shaped her.

Though ill health limited her later visits, Amber remained deeply connected to the St Margaret’s community. She attended all her reunions, was a regular at year-group gatherings and Cranmer events, and followed College life with genuine interest and pride.

Amber’s extraordinary bequest is a reflection of her enduring commitment to the College and her desire to ensure that its legacy is never forgotten. Her generosity means that future students, staff, and Old Girls will have access to a living, thriving archive that tells the rich story of St Margaret’s and its people, achievements, and service to others.

We are profoundly grateful for Amber’s visionary support. Her gift is not only a tribute to the past but also a powerful investment in the future. Through her generosity, Amber has secured her place as a guardian of our story, ensuring it will be told, remembered, and cherished.

Amber’s legacy will live on in our school community and in every photograph, letter, uniform, and voice that finds a home in our Archives. We remember her with deep respect, gratitude, and admiration.

Preserving the past, inspiring the future: The impact of archives

At St Margaret’s College, history is not just something we study and teach - it’s something we live every day. From the traditions we honour to the values we uphold, our rich heritage is woven into the very fabric of our College community. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the St Margaret’s archives have become a resource that preserves our past and actively enriches the education of our current students.

The archives house a treasure trove of historical records, photographs, uniforms, publications, and artefacts that tell the story of our College since its founding in 1910. These materials are carefully catalogued and curated by our staff.

But our archives are more than just a repository - they are a living legacy that connects past, present, and future generations of St Margaret’s girls. Today’s students benefit directly from the archives in meaningful and educational ways. Whether they are exploring the evolution of women’s education in New Zealand, researching past students, or poring over old uniforms, the archives provide first-hand access to history.

This tangible connection to former students offers a sense of identity and belonging. It shows our girls that they are part of their College’s enduring narrative, and that they too are contributing to the College’s unfolding story.

The ongoing care, preservation, and digitisation of our archives is only possible with philanthropic support. Donor funding ensures that we can continue to protect fragile materials, expand our collection, and make the archives more accessible to our school community and researchers.

In the coming year, we aim to enhance access to our archival collections through digital platforms, giving students, staff and Old Girls greater opportunity to engage with our history.

By supporting our archives, you are helping us safeguard the stories that shape us, and to ensure that every St Margaret’s girl can step into her future with a deep appreciation of the past, ready to make history of their own.

“The past is not behind us. It is within us—and it lights the path ahead.”

Our Supporters

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our generous 2024 donors, whose unwavering support made a profound difference in the lives of our students and the future of St Margaret’s College.
