Facts about St Luke's Hospice 2019

Facts and figures for St Luke's (Cheshire) Hospice for the year ending 31st March 2019 giving you a flavour of the work that we did in 2018/2019.

As the NHS provides a contribution of only 14% of our running costs, we have to rely on the support and generous donations of our local communities along with our own fundraising efforts to raise the other 86%.

The summary of our consolidated accounts shows how we raised and spent the money during the year.

Volunteers Population

St Luke's Hospice provides a truly local service caring for a population of 289,000 people: 173,000 from South Cheshire (60%) 102,000 from Vale Royal (35%) 14,000 from East and West Cheshire (5%) Each year we have over 1,000 patient referrals to our various Hospice services.

The Hospice could not provide the special care that it does without the dedication, loyalty and continuing support of its volunteers.

The number of volunteers supporting us at the end of the year across the whole organisation was 776 of which 357 support our shops and warehouse. It is estimated that volunteers gave over 80,000 hours of their time last year which even at the minimum wage of £8.21 equates to £656,800 worth of valuable support.

Inpatient Unit

Throughout the year we cared for over 250 patients on our Inpatient Unit. Occasionally patients are admitted more than once during the year which led to 261 different periods of care.

Open 365 days a year, we have ten inpatient beds, two three-bedded bays and four single rooms. The beds were 81% occupied during the year.

The average length of inpatient stay was 11.3 days, which is comparable to other hospices of a similar size.

Of all the patients we cared for on our Inpatient Unit, 44% were discharged back to their preferred place of care, mainly back to their own home, dispelling the myth that the Hospice is a place where you come to die.

Approximately two thirds of our patients had a cancer diagnosis and one third of patients admitted had a non-cancer diagnosis.

All the inpatients admitted to the Hospice would have been admitted to hospital which confirms that the Inpatient Unit is a very real alternative to hospital.

Day Hospice

Our Day Hospice unit offers a wide range of clinical and supportive therapies. The various services are: Day Hospice services on two days a week Complementary Therapies Creative Therapies Hypnotherapies Carer Therapies Specialist group therapies such as Mindfulness, Breathlessness Management etc.

Other Clinical Services We offer other clinical and supportive services: Lymphoedema Service Family Support Chaplaincy Social Workers Befriending We have a strong connection with The Christie, who use our facilities one day a week to deliver chemotherapy to patients who are referred to their service

Shops

We have nine shops including our gift shop in Reception at Grosvenor House. We also sell items (both new and donated) via EBAY and have a large donation warehouse on Road 1, Pineapple Park, Winsford Industrial Estate which is open Monday to Saturday. Last year our shops sold over £900,000 of donated goods.

Lottery

Since 1994 our lottery has generated over £11 million for patient care and paid over £3.2 million in prize money to local winners, it remains the single biggest funding stream for our Hospice. We also have a bi-annual raffle with the summer draw for the car kindly donated by Cliff Dickenson & Son. At the end of last year we had 16,619 playing members of which 83% pay by Direct Debit, Standing Order or cheque, and 17% are collected door to door.

Fundraising Our Fundraising and Communications teams organise our fabulous Some top fundraisers for St Luke’s events and also encourage everyone in the community to last year: support St Luke’s where possible. The Communications team ensure as many people as possible learn about the services of St Luke’s and our Midnight Walk - £120,000 administrative team actively supports people who are fundraising for Light Up a Life - £25,000 St Luke’s and ensure all donations are acknowledged appropriately.

Our Teams

The Charity is overseen by a Board of 10 volunteer Trustees, from different professional backgrounds.

At the year ending 31/03/19 there were 127 staff (24 full time staff and 103 part time staff) of which 85% were female and 15% male.

Healthcare Teams – we have 55 staff comprising 3 medical staff, 29 nurses and 12 health care assistants providing 24/7 Specialist Palliative Care Services 365 days a year.

In addition we have 5 therapists, 2 social workers and 4 family support workers.

Support Teams – we have 32 support team members which include catering, housekeeping, maintenance, finance, IT and administration.

Income Generation Teams - we have 21 staff working in our income generation areas including Community, Event and Corporate fundraising, supported by the Communications, Lottery and administration teams. There are 19 team members working in our shops and warehouse.

How much does it cost to run the Hospice?

As a charity we make no charge for our services, but rely on our own fundraising efforts and a modest contribution from the NHS. This enables us to provide support to patients and their families according to their individual needs.

For each £1 spent by St Luke's Hospice, 83 pence is spent on patient care.

It is prudent for a charity like ours, whose income is uncertain, to hold reserves to provide the financial stability to sustainably deliver the services which we provide.

*Excludes year end Accounting Recharge of £110,000.

As of 31/03/2019 the Hospice had 'free reserves' of £2.64 million which represents 6.5 months of running costs. We also held reserves of £802,000 designated to modernise the Hospice and for service development.
