Ten-year-oldJamesMarshallattendedourChildren’sPhoenixSupportGroup afterhisdadsadlydiedattheHospice.
Runbycounsellorsandtrainedvolunteers,thegroupsupportslocalfamiliesby providingasafeandfriendlyenvironmentwherechildrenandyoungpeopleare helpedtounderstandthefeelingsandexperiencesassociatedwithlossand change,andgivenpossiblecopingstrategies.Importantlytheyalsomeetother childreninasimilarsituation.
Jamesexplains:“AtthestartIwasscaredIwouldn’t knowanyofthechildrenandIdidn’tknowwhatthe facilitatorswouldbelike,buttheyaregreatfunand I’vemadealotofstrongfriendshipsalongtheway withotherchildrenandmembersofstaff.
“Westartedoffmakingamemoryboxandevery singlesessionwe’dmakedifferentthingsandput theminthebox.Wedothingslikereadan inspirationalbook,makecandlesfortheperson, mainlythingstorememberthem.
“BeforeIwasveryanxiousbecauseIdidn’tknow anyonebutnowI’mreallycomfortablewithitand I’malwaysexcitedtogo.IfeltlikeIwastheonlychild goingthroughit,butnowIdefinitelydon’tfeellike that.”
“It’shelpedmerealisethatit’snotjustmewho’sgoingthroughthisgrief,and Ifeellessisolatedwithit.”

Autumnterm-Participateinouriconicfestivefundraiser, ElfRun!EnjoysomeChristmasfunandprovidevitalfunds forpatientcare.Forolderstudents,whynotgetinvolvedin ourannualChristmasJumperDayinstead.
Allyearround-Pleasetakeadvantageofourfree assemblies/talksgivinginformationontheworkofa Hospice,usingage-appropriatelanguageforKS1 throughtoKS4.Talksarealsoavailabletocollege students,especiallyHealthCarestudentsconsideringa careerinahospicesetting.

MakesureallyourportableelectronicequipmentisPATtested andsafetouse.Avoidtrailingcablesandheavylifting.
Whenbookingavenue,thinkaboutlightingandtoiletfacilities, fireexitsandparking,aswellasmakingprovisionsforpeople withdisabilities.
Ifyou’replanningalargescaleoutdoorevent,makesure volunteershavephonessothattheycancommunicatewith eachother.
Ifyou’rehiringcatering,makesuretheyhavetherelevant insuranceandcertificatesbeforeyouagreetousethem.

Dependingonyourevent,youmayneedalicence,suchasa TemporaryEventsNotice(TENs)foractivitieslikesporting events,filmsormusicfestivals.Wecanguideyouwiththis.
StLuke'sHospicecannotacceptresponsibilityforaccident, injury,lossordamageasaresultofyourevent.Anyactivity youdomustbecoveredbyaninsurancepolicy,asa minimumthiswillusuallybePublicLiabilityInsurance.Check thatanythirdpartysuppliersareadequatelyandcurrently insuredtoo.
Whencollectingdonationsyoumustcarryacopyoftheletter orlicencegrantingpermissiontocollect.Collectiontinsmust besealedandnotshaken.Ifyouhavetocountmoneymake suretwopeoplearepresentandstoremoneyinasecure place.
Makesuretoconsiderhowmuchprofityoureventissetto make.Expensesshouldnotbedeductedfromtheincome unlessagreedwithStLuke’sHospice.Anyinvestmentmadeoriftheeventwastomakealoss-wouldbetheresponsibility oftheorganiserandthehospicewouldnotbeliable.

Wewereprivilegedtocarefor25-year-old JacobWhiteheadfromNorthwichwhospenthis finalweeksonourInpatientUnit.Jacob’s girlfriendSarahWattersdescribeswhatourcare meanttoJacob,hisfamilyandfriends…
“WesadlylostJacobfollowinghisbattlewith Stage4BrainCancer,agedjust25.Hespenthis final8weeksatthehospicewherethesupport andcareprovidedwasnothingshortof outstanding.Jacobwastreatedlikeroyaltyand wecouldn’thaveaskedforabetterplacefor himtospendhisfinal2months.
“AnyonewhoknewJacob,knewhimforhissenseofhumourandcountlessline upoffriends.Duringhistimeatthehospice,despitebeingpoorlyandknowing whatwascoming,heneverlostthissenseofhumour;stillmanagingtomakeus laughduringthemostbrutalcircumstances.
“WhatmadethehospicespecialtoJacob,wasthatitfeltlikehomeandgave usaglimpseofnormalityinotherwisedevastatingcircumstances.
“HehadhisownroomandabigTV,andwhenhisfriendsandfamilycameto visitwecouldforgetaboutthedifficultcircumstancesandjustappreciatethe preciousmemorieswithhim.”
