Discussion of Damaged Heritage with Author J. Chester Johnson

The Antiracism Discussion Group has been working through Damaged Heritage: the Elaine Race Massacre and a Story of Reconciliation since early spring. We are very pleased to have J. Jonathan Daniels Pilgrimage | Aug. 8-10
This trip is open to rising 9 - 12th grade students. Youth will travel with leaders from the Diocese to Atlanta, Birmingham, Selma, and Hayesville to remember the life and witness of Jonathan Daniels, and learn about the history and continued work of the Civil Rights Movement today. Clothing Needed for Community Closet
We’re in great need of gently used summer clothing, sneakers and walking shoes for men, women and children. Hoodies, sweatshirts, light jackets, rain gear, backpacks and rolling suitcases are also in demand. We’re always running out of new men’s briefs and women’s underwear and toiletries (shampoo, lotion, soap etc). Travel sized hygiene items in bulk are the most useful! St. Luke’s maintains two prayer lists: a printed list for parishioners, family, loved ones and close friends of parishioners, and an electronic list for private concerns and for a wider circle of concern that may include parish members’ acquaintances, loved ones of close friends, etc. All of the names on the printed list and the electronic list are prayed for regularly by members of the Intercessory Prayer Group.

Christian Formation Program
October - April
The Formation Program at St. Luke’s is designed to prepare adult parishioners for Baptism, Confirmation, Reception, or the Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows at the Easter Vigil. It is a way for people to find their way “home” at St. Luke’s, whether from another tradition, no tradition, or a life-time with the Episcopal Church.
The Discovery Series is open to anyone interested in the subject matter, and the latter part is for those who have completed the Discovery Series and wish to proceed as candidates to be presented to the Bishop at the Easter Vigil. All candidates are paired with a sponsor who will introduce them more deeply to the life and ministries of St. Luke’s Church. Candidates are expected to attend all four sessions of the Discovery Series and to participate in all subsequent meetings of the program. Full participation in the liturgies of Holy Week is strongly encouraged. Please contact Fr. Reynolds for more information.

The Antiracism Discussion Group
The Antiracism Discussion Group discusses contemporary and historical issues of race, color, and ethnicity and their impact on our society in order to enable change in perspective, both individually and collectively, to encourage antiracism in the broader community. It is designed as a safe place for members of our parish and community to gain a deeper understanding of how racism affects our lives.

Sacred Ground is a film-and readings-based dialogue series on race, grounded in faith.Small groups are invited to walk through chapters of America’s history of race and racism, while weaving in threads of family story, economic class, and political and regional identity.
Sacred Ground is part of Becoming Beloved Community, The Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, our ministries, and our society. This series is open to all, and especially designed to help white people talk with other white people.Participants are invited to peel away the layers that have contributed to the challenges and divides of the present day –all while grounded in our call to faith, hope and love.

This semester, we offer Godly Play as the foundation for Christian Formation for children in Pre-K - Grade 5 each week.
Support our Sunday School Programming for children and families is made possible by the generous gifts of time, talent, and treasure from our parishioners and friends! We welcome your support of these important ministries as we nurture the next generation of disciples in a spirit of joy and wonder. Sunday Mornings
Youth in Grades 6 - 12 are invited to a time of fellowship and formation on Sundays at 10:20. Come hang out, and discuss questions of life and faith with friends and teachers.
Youth Confirmation
St. Luke’s offers Youth Confirmation to Youth in Grades 8 - 12. Preparation for Confirmation will take place in class and in worship. Meeting times will begin mid September with the conferring of the Sacrament of Confirmation at the Easter Vigil.

Byrd at 400: The Great Service

Choir of St. Luke in the Fields
As a fitting celebration of the 400th anniversary of William Byrd’s death, we present his monumental Great Service, often described as the “crown jewel” of Anglican sacred music. It is one of his most magnificent creations, awesome in scale and hugely demanding, with intricate and complex ten-part polyphony. The program will also include psalms, anthems and organ works by Byrd.

Masterpieces of Mexican Polyphony

Choir of St. Luke in the Fields
This program explores the wealth of Renaissance polyphony composed in New Spain in the sixteenth century. Music of Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla will be featured, including his double choir Missa Ego flos campi, driven by traditional Spanish dance rhythms. Motets and villancicos by Hernando Franco, Francisco López Capillas and Antonio de Salazar will complete the program.

The concert will feature the music of Claudio Monteverdi for the service of Vespers, including pieces from the Selva morale e spirituale anthology of 1641 and the ever-popular Beatus vir. The service of Vespers in seventeenth-century Venice was a musical extravaganza, a Concert Spirituel. The church music of Monteverdi and his contemporaries reflected the “modern style” of the day, with dazzling displays of vocal virtuosity and a kaleidoscope of instrumental colors.

Saturdays from 2 - 4 pm
Every Saturday (excepting Church holidays/events) from 3-4 in Laughlin Hall, we provide clothing, personal care items, and brown bag sandwich meals to anyone in need. All items are provided free of charge.
Currently our most needed items are gently used summer clothing and especially rolling suitcases!
Art & Acceptance at St. Luke’s is our Saturday evening drop-in program featuring meals, safe space, and arts programming for homeless and marginally housed LGBTQ+ youth. In NYC right now, over half of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ+.

The Church of St. Luke in the Fields welcomes the public to its private gardens, and is pleased to open them to the community as a place of respite. Food is allowed, but smoking and alcoholic beverages are not. Please refrain from cellphone conversations and from feeding the birds or squirrels. Dispose of your trash. The gardens are a pet-free zone; service dogs are not allowed on the South Lawn, for the sake of the children who play there.
