The Day of Pentecost: Whitsunday 8 June 2025 9:15 am Holy Eucharist
STEWARDSHIP

The Day of Pentecost

On this day in the Book of Acts God sends his Holy Spirit to empower the disciples to perform the mission which their risen Christ has entrusted to them. God anoints the Church with the Spirit of blessing and belovedness as they are brought into a new Communion relationship with Jesus and one another. After the Easter Vigil, the time of Pentecost was the preferred occasion for baptism in early Christian centuries, and the services of Pentecost also reflect this baptismal theme. Today we celebrate Baptism to welcome new disciples into the life of Jesus known to us in this place, as all are reminded of the power given to us by the Holy Spirit in order that we might reflect God’s great love into the world.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

THE FIRST LESSON Acts 2:1-21
When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we
hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’”
Reader The Word of the Lord.
People Thanks be to God.
PSALM 104:25-35, 37
Said by all, remaining seated.
O Lord, how manifold are your works! * in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, * creatures both small and great.
There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, * which you have made for the sport of it. All of them look to you * to give them their food in due season.
You give it to them; they gather it; * you open your hand, and they are filled with good things. You hide your face, and they are terrified; * you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust.
You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; * and so you renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; * may the Lord rejoice in all his works.
He looks at the earth and it trembles; * he touches the mountains and they smoke. I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; * I will praise my God while I have my being.
May these words of mine please him; * I will rejoice in the Lord. Bless the Lord, O my soul. * Hallelujah!
THE SECOND LESSON Romans 8:14-17
All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ-- if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

THE HOLY GOSPEL John 14:8-17 (25-27)
Deacon The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Philip said to Jesus, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, `Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.” “I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”
Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATER
Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you.
Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Celebrant
We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism
of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water
Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

The candidates are presented by name to the Celebrant

Celebrant Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon these your servants for the forgiveness of sin, and have raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen.
Celebrant Let us welcome the newly baptized.

CHORISTER RECOGNITION
THE DIVESTITURE OF A CHORISTER
The Choristers to be divested come forward. The Master of Choristers says People of God, it is my purpose, as Master of Choristers of this Parish Church of St. Luke in the Fields, to give thanks for the ministry of these Choristers who have served well during their time as members of the Choir.
The Choristers remove and relinquish their surplices. The Master of Choristers then says Our footsteps are guided by the Lord: we have longed greatly for God’s ways. Reveal your path to the Lord, put your trust in God, and he shall bring it to pass. O Lord, you guide the footsteps of all people: Look with favor on these your servants, bless and guide their going out and their coming in on their journey through life. Hear us, Lord, and have mercy. Amen.
The Rector says Almighty God, giver of the gift of music, we give you thanks for these Choristers who have served and sung praises to your holy Name. Accompany them with your grace, delivering them from all that would harm them. Grant them fulfillment in all things which are for their good. Help them always to sing praises to you, both with their lips and in their heart. For you are the giver of all good things, and to you we lift up our voices, O God. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

The Prayers of the People are one of the most important parts of the liturgy. We include prayers for the universal Church, the world and our local community, those in need, the sick and suffering, and the dying. In addition to the printed prayers, we are invited to pray for those concerns in our own hearts. You may stand or kneel during this time.
The Deacon reads the intercessions for the parish. Then the Intercessor says, Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one.
Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people.
We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.
We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth.
Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight.
Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress.
Give to the departed eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them.
We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.
Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.
Silence
The Celebrant concludes with a Collect. The Celebrant then says an offertory sentence.
THE OFFERTORY

After the peace, the celebrant invites the people to offer their gifts to God. This is a time when we are asked to think intentionally about how we can give back to the Church in support of God’s mission in an effort to make our own proclamation of the Good News. It is important to remember that gifts come in many forms including time, talent, and treasure. What gifts can you give to God, and share with others today?
During the Offertory a hymn or anthem is sung. The gifts of money are brought with the bread and wine for the Eucharist to the altar and presented to God.
OFFERTORY ANTHEM
Peter Hurford
In the hour of my distress, When temptations me oppress, And when I my sins confess, Sweet Spirit, comfort me
When I lie within my bed, Sick in heart and sick in head, And with doubts discomfited, Sweet Spirit, comfort me.
When the house doth sigh and weep, And the world is drowned with sleep, Yet mine eyes the watch do keep, Sweet Spirit, comfort me.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Celebrant continues
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. In fulfillment of his true promise, the Holy Spirit came down on this day from heaven, lighting upon the disciples, to teach them and to lead them into all truth; uniting peoples of many tongues in the confession of one faith, and giving to your church the power to serve you as a royal priesthood, and to preach the Gospel to all nations. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name.
