All are invited to consider preparing for the celebration of Jesus’ birth by participating in the Christmas Pageant, including adult actors, volunteers and participants.
The Christmas Pageant will be held on Saturday December 24th at the 5:00pm Christmas Eve Mass. Rehearsals for the pageant will be held on November 24 and December 8, 15, 22 and 24. Please email Mo. About the music at today’s service
James MacMillan is the pre-eminent Scottish composer of his generation, producing exciting new music which combines strong rhythm, raw emotional power and spiritual meditation. His music shows a strong connection with religious and social themes. He first attracted major attention at the 1990 BBC Proms in the UK, with the première of The Confession of Isobel Gowdie. His most widely known work to date, however, is his percussion concerto Veni, Veni, Emmanuel (1992), which has received over 350 performances.
Other works by MacMillan include Seven Last Words from the Cross for chorus and string orchestra, screened on BBC TV during Holy Week 1994, Inés de Castro, premiered by Scottish Opera and toured to Porto in 2001, a triptych of orchestral works commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra.
The Missa Brevis was written when the composer was aged 17 and released for publication thirty years later in 2007. The style is imbued with the Renaissance and Baroque choral works that MacMillan was discovering with his school choir, as well as music by Britten and Kenneth Leighton with whom he started composition lessons around this time.. The Gloria is chordal in texture with Gabrieli-like antiphonal writing throwing the phrases between upper and lower voices. The harmony is quite rich, and reminds one strongly of Frank Martin’s glorious double choir Mass.
In December 2008 he was awarded the British Composer Award for Liturgical Music, for his Strathclyde Motets, one of which is the motet Sedebit Dominus Rex, a setting of the Communion text for the Feast of Christ the King. The joy of the opening is achieved principally through the ‘decorated’ soprano line which, as so often in MacMillan’s music, harks back to the influence of ancient Celtic music.
Jean Langlais was organist of SainteClothilde in Paris, where his predecessors included Charles Tournemire and César Franck. Langlais was very much a part of the French tradition of organistcomposers. His output was large, consisting almost exclusively of works for the organ and sacred choral pieces. His organ works characteristically incorporate plainsong themes.
His Suite Médiévale is in the form of a “Messe Basse,” (“Low Mass”) in which the various movements replace the propers that would be sung by the choir at the High Mass. These include the entrance or introit (Prélude) and offertory (Tiento), heard this morning as the prelude, as well as music for the elevation, communion, and dismissal. The dismissal piece, “Christus vincit” (“Christ reigns triumphantly”) is traditional to this season of the church year.
