GLORIA IN EXCELSIS Chichester Mass
Richard Lloyd (1933-2021)
Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonæ voluntatis.
Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te, gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam: Domine Deus, Rex cælestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine fili unigenite Jesu Christe, Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus altissimus, Jesu Christe, cum Sancto Spiritu, in gloria Dei Patris. Amen.
THE COLLECT OF THE DAY
Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.
Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, and we give thanks to you for your great glory: Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty.
Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. You, who take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy upon us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. All are seated.
The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them forever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect.
Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.
All remain seated for the psalm. The refrain is intoned by a cantor, then repeated by the congregation and sung as indicated.

THE SECOND LESSON Revelation 21:1-6a
I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.” And the one who was seated on the throne said, “See, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Then he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.”

THE HOLY GOSPEL John 11:32-44
Deacon The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.
When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?” Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, “Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water
Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

About today’s liturgy
All Saints’ Day (also known as All Hallows or Feast of All Saints) is celebrated by the Western Church on November 1. The Book of Common Prayer rubrics allow for this feast to be transferred to the following Sunday, and is marked as one of four occasions during the church year when baptisms are particularly appropriate.
In the early days Christians were accustomed to solemnizing the anniversary of a martyr’s death for Christ at the place of martyrdom. In the fourth century, neighboring dioceses began to interchange feasts, to transfer relics, to divide them, and to join in a common feast; as is shown by the invitation of St. Basil of Caesarea in 397 to the bishops of the province of Pontus. In the persecution of Diocletian the number of martyrs became so great that a separate day could not be assigned to each so a common day was appointed for all. The first trace of this we find in Antioch on the Sunday after Pentecost. We also find mention of a common day in a sermon of St. Ephrem the Syrian in 373) and in a homily of St. John Chrysostom in 407.
The origin of All Saints’ Day cannot be traced with certainty, and it has been observed on various days in different places. Its current date can be traced to the foundation by Pope Gregory III (731–741) of an oratory in St. Peter’s for the relics “of the holy apostles and of all saints, martyrs and confessors, of all the just made perfect who are at rest throughout the world”, with the day set as November 1.
A November festival of all the saints was already widely celebrated on November 1 in the days of Charlemagne. It was made a holy day of obligation throughout the Frankish empire in 835, by a decree of Louis the Pious, issued “at the instance of Pope Gregory IV and with the assent of all the bishops”, which confirmed its celebration on 1 November.
About the music at today’s service
Richard Lloyd was born in Cheshire and sang as a chorister of Lichfield Cathedral. He attended Rugby School and Jesus College, Cambridge. After serving as Christopher Dearnley’s assistant at Salisbury Cathedral from 1957-1966, he was Choirmaster of Hereford Cathedral until 1974 when he moved to Durham Cathedral. From there he became deputy headmaster of Salisbury Cathedral School before an early retirement in 1988 due to ill health. His Chichester Mass was commissioned for the Southern Cathedrals Festival in 1992.
The three choral anthems sung at this service are settings of the Introit (Gaudeamus omnes, or “Rejoice we all”), the Offertory (Justorum animae), and the Communion (Beati mundo corde), the traditional propers for the Feast of All Saints. The New York City composer Ned Rorem (1923-2022) produced a large body of sacred music throughout his long career in spite of being a cheerful agnostic. Rejoice we all in the Lord was composed in 1986 for All Saints Episcopal Church in Fort Lauderdale. Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) was one of the most significant British composers of church music between Henry Purcell and Ralph Vaughan Williams. He composed three Latin motets in 1905, the first being Justorum animae. Like his best music, it has a flowing grace and calm gentle beauty, and exquisitely captures the sense of the text. Gerald Near has been an active church musician as well as
composer. His style shows the influence of Herbert Howells and Maurice Duruflé, and plainsong figures importantly in his music. The anthem heard today is entitled For the Feast of All Saints and is based on the Gregorian chant communion for that feast. The text is set both in Latin and in English.
