THE COLLECT OF THE DAY
Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.
O God, your never-failing providence sets in order all things both in heaven and earth: Put away from us, we entreat you, all hurtful things, and give us those things which are profitable for us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
SEASON AFTER PENTECOST 3
THE FIRST LESSON
Deuteronomy 5:12-15
Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work— you, or your son or your daughter, or your male or female slave, or your ox or your donkey, or any of your livestock, or the resident alien in your towns, so that your male and female slave may rest as well as you. Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day.
Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.
LITURGY OF THE WORD
4 SEASON AFTER PENTECOST
PSALM 81:1-10
Said by all, remaining seated.
Sing with joy to God our strength * and raise a loud shout to the God of Jacob. Raise a song and sound the timbrel, * the merry harp, and the lyre.
Blow the ram’s-horn at the new moon, * and at the full moon, the day of our feast. For this is a statute for Israel, * a law of the God of Jacob.
He laid it as a solemn charge upon Joseph, * when he came out of the land of Egypt. I heard an unfamiliar voice saying * “I eased his shoulder from the burden; his hands were set free from bearing the load.”
You called on me in trouble, and I saved you; * I answered you from the secret place of thunder and tested you at the waters of Meribah. Hear, O my people, and I will admonish you: * O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
There shall be no strange god among you; * you shall not worship a foreign god. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and said, “Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.”
SEASON AFTER PENTECOST 5
THE SECOND LESSON 2 Corinthians 4:5-12
We do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.
Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.
SEQUENCE HYMN 381 · Ton-y Botel (see pg 18)
Sung by all, standing.
THE HOLY GOSPEL Mark 2:23-3:6
Deacon The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.
One sabbath Jesus and his disciples were going through the grainfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?” And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and he gave some to his companions.” Then he said to them, “The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is
6 SEASON AFTER PENTECOST
lord even of the sabbath.” Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. They watched him to see whether he would cure him on the sabbath, so that they might accuse him. And he said to the man who had the withered hand, “Come forward.” Then he said to them, “Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the sabbath, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. He looked around at them with anger; he was grieved at their hardness of heart and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.
Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.
THE
HOMILY The Reverend Isabel Geller
THE NICENE CREED
Said by all
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
SEASON AFTER PENTECOST 7
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS
CHORISTER RECOGNITION
The Divestiture of a Chorister
The Chorister to be divested comes forward. The Master of Choristers says People of God, it is my purpose, as Master of Choristers of this Parish Church of St. Luke in the Fields, to give thanks for the ministry of this Chorister who has served well during her time as a member of the Choir.
The Chorister removes and relinquishes her surplice. The Master of Choristers then says Our footsteps are guided by the Lord: we have longed greatly for God‘s ways. Reveal your path to the Lord, put your trust in God, and he shall bring it to pass. O Lord, you guide the footsteps of all people: Look with favor on this your servant, bless and guide her going out and her coming in on her journey through life. Hear us, Lord, and have mercy. Amen.
The Celebrant says
Almighty God, giver of the gift of music, we give you thanks for this Chorister who has served and sung praises to your holy Name. Accompany her with your grace, delivering her from all that would harm her. Grant her fulfillment in all things which are for her good. Help her always to sing praises to you, both with her lips and in her heart. For you are the giver of all good things, and to you we lift up our voices, O God. Amen.

Said by all Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; in your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and left undone; and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
10 SEASON AFTER PENTECOST
The Celebrant says the Absolution:
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.
THE PEACE
Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you.
Then the Ministers and People greet each other in the name of the Lord. The Celebrant then says an offertory sentence.
THE OFFERTORY
After the peace, the celebrant invites the people to offer their gifts to God. This is a time when we are asked to think intentionally about how we can give back to the Church in support of God’s mission in an effort to make our own proclamation of the Good News. It is important to remember that gifts come in many forms including time, talent, and treasure. What gifts can you give to God, and share with others today?
During the Offertory a hymn or anthem is sung. The gifts of money are brought with the bread and wine for the Eucharist to the altar and presented to God.
SEASON AFTER PENTECOST 11
OFFERTORY ANTHEM
Robert Powell
Like a flowing river is God's perfect peace glorious forever in its bright increase; perfect, yet it floweth fuller every day; perfect, yet it grow deeper all the way. Hidden in the hollow of His blessed hand. No foe can follow, or traitor ever stand; not a surge of worry, not a shade of care, not a blast of hurry touch the spirit there.
Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blest; finding, as he promised, perfect peace and rest. We may trust him in all that we do; they who trust him wholly find him wholly true.
OFFERTORY HYMN 567 · St. Matthew (see pg 19) Sung by all, standing.
12 SEASON AFTER PENTECOST
The Celebrant continues It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For you are the source of light and life, you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING
SEASON AFTER PENTECOST 13
THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
The Celebrant concludes. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.
As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,
Said by all
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.
THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD
The Celebrant breaks the bread. A short period of silence follows.
