TAKING SHAPE – IN A ROUNDABOUT WAY

The Clock Field ‘gateway’ roundabout is clearly taking shape and by the time this edition hits the streets, North Street should be re-opened and the village returned to business, more or less as usual. The summer road closure has been interesting – a pleasure for some, but disruptive for others.

Despite concerns raised by some residents and local businesses, Turners Hill has been its usual stolid self in keeping calm and carrying on. Many in the village have praised the helpful, friendly way in which the construction team has liaised with residents, so thanks to them.

Otherwise, there is plenty of local news and September activity to report as we return from the summer holiday break, so take a look inside……

FROM THE VICARAGE Church Road, Turners Hill, RH10 4PB CHURCH HALL SAGA: REPAIRS UNDERWAY, BUT FUND-RAISING NEEDED Our Church Hall saga continues. During July we had three break- ins, theft, vandalism and an act of arson. At one stage we had gas pouring into the Hall from a stolen pipe.

Nevertheless, the good news is that the repairs have started and we hope that they will be completed some time in September.

Once we know a likely return date we will plan a celebration and a special fund-raising event.

In addition to the repair costs covered by insurance, we need to raise about £10,000 to complete the project. The act of arson melted the portable toilet, as well as causing other damage. I was pictured (see left) waiting for a confession!

We did think of calling our fund-raising event 'The Loo Do' - a penny to get in of course.

PRAYER FESTIVAL SUCCESS The Prayer Festival at the end of June went very well with nearly 300 visitors. I was extremely impressed by the imagination of the young people, the teachers and members of the congregation in putting together 16 Prayer Stands.

C of E REVEALS PLANS FOR MORE CHURCHES AND NEW STRATEGIES More than 100 new churches are to be created by the Church of England in the face of a record low number of people identifying as Anglicans. Last year, the British Social Attitudes survey found that only three per cent of adults under 24 and only five per cent of 25-34 year-olds described themselves as Anglican. The £27m plan is part of an ongoing drive to refocus the church on evangelism amid a dramatic decline in the numbers of people regularly attending services. The C of E’s “renewal and reform” programme, aimed at modernisation and growth, includes diverting funds away from struggling rural parishes to new evangelical churches in towns and cities.

Many believe that the growth programme is a very good thing. It will fund some desperately needed, creative and exciting initiatives across marginalised and deprived areas, including more café-style, drop-in churches, debt-coaching services and community support networks to engage with families and young people.

The pattern of priests in single parishes served the church and the country well for hundreds of years, but society has changed. If the church wants to survive - and thrive - it needs to see itself in a new light – more responsive, and willing to embrace today’s way of life. Most people, especially the young, don’t want to have to step through a church doorway to engage with life’s big issues. They don’t want to sit in pews on Sunday mornings to listen to a sermon or a set, age-old liturgy. They want to know how to navigate the complexities of their lives and address their deepest longings, doubts and fears. The modern church therefore needs to become more interactive and flexible. The future pattern may well look a lot more like the early church, with small groups meeting in each other’s homes.

STRONG OBJECTION TO NEW HARTMIRES PLANNING BID DM/18/2675 Hartmires Investments Limited, Turners Hill Burial Ground Turners Hill Road Turners Hill West Sussex. Outline planning application for the construction of a new barn/workshop, hard standing area, internal site access road and footway, crossing to existing public right of way and associated landscape works with all matters reserved apart from access and scale.

Although Mid Sussex District Council (MSDC) may have announced its decision by the time this edition is published, the above item was discussed at the Parish Council meeting on Tuesday August 7 and the Council opposed the application.

It told MSDC: “We strongly object to this latest application as submitted by Hartmires Investments Ltd. The application states that the new barn/workshop is necessary for the running of the business. However, there is no business being operated on the site despite permission for a Natural Burial Ground being granted in September 2015. After all this time, we are beginning to wonder if there will ever be a Natural Burial Ground in operation or will we simply be left with green fields scarred by large buildings and hard surfaces.”

SKYLINE BIKE RIDE – SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 16 This year’s Skyline Bike Ride will be coming through Turners Hill on the above date. This year their lunch stop will be at Tulleys Farm and not The Ark.

ANNUAL LITTER PICKING HOUR – SATURDAY OCTOBER 6 The Parish Council is organising the annual ‘Litter Picking Hour’. This year it will be held on Saturday October 6 and all volunteers should meet on the Village Green at 10.00. We are asking that each individual will clear the rubbish in their street for one hour. The litter picking day will then be an annual event held on the first Saturday of October at 10.00.

GRANTS AVAILABLE FROM GATWICK AIRPORT Gatwick Foundation Fund has been established to support important community and voluntary projects across the region by providing annual grants. The fund is in partnership with Community Foundations for Sussex, Surrey and Kent to provide knowledge and understanding of community needs, ensuring that grants are focused where they can be most effective. Grants may be used to fund existing services and facilities or new initiatives. Examples of the types of projects and causes that grants will be awarded for are: •Employment, training and skills - helping people to gain confidence and raise aspirations through training and development of new skills.

•Families - supporting families and children in need and projects which combat social isolation and disadvantage.

•Widening horizons/providing opportunities - supporting projects that enable young people to have opportunities that they would not otherwise have and to help them to widen their horizons and aspirations.

•Elderly people - improving access to facilities and reducing isolation for the older generation.

WASTE FREIGHTER DATE Date for the next visit of the household refuse and garden waste freighter is Sunday September 2. As usual, the freighter will be behind The Ark from 10.00 to 11.00; and then at Turners Hill Park between 11.10 and 12.00. Help and directions will be on hand. It is important to use these special services to ensure they continue. Future scheduled dates are November 11 and February 3 2019.

Please remember that the following items cannot be accepted: electrical items; tyres; rubble and hardcore; baths, shower trays, toilets, sinks; gas canisters; paint pots with any contents. VILLAGE NEWS CRICKET CLUB QUITS LEAGUE COMPETITION

Since my last report Turners Hill CC has played three league matches – recording one win and two losses. Unfortunately, lack of availability has meant that we had to concede three matches and with the situation looking dire for the remainder of the season, the club has withdrawn from League competition for the rest of the summer.

It is important to emphasise that the club has NOT folded – it is simply that lack of numbers has prevented us from fielding a side against our competitors in the league.

Our club committee is considering all options open to us: maybe not entering the league next year; maybe playing friendly matches on Sundays; possibly merging with another club. We remain optimistic for the future, but for this season the club has ceased competition purely because of being unable to raise a side.

Unfortunately, lack of players is a nation-wide problem. We hear stories of so many clubs struggling to fulfil fixtures and of clubs folding. It is so sad for us all.

Anyway, to some match details: Visitors Staplefield, batting first against some tight bowling, were all out for 117. In response, Hill started well but couldn’t capitalise on a good start, reaching only 93 in response. Game lost.

Next, we travelled to Lindfield III. On a pitch with uneven bounce, we were in trouble at 34 for 5.

Josh Allard was then joined by Ben Fernando and proceeded to put on more than 100 for the sixth wicket – Ben scoring a classy 59, Josh going on to post his highest ever score of 89 not out.

Eventually the innings closed at 177 all out.

In response, Lindfield started well until they lost their second wicket. Then wickets fell quickly until they were all out for 131. A great win…

Our final match was against Lingfield III. Batting first, Turners Hill started strongly, posting 69 for the first wicket. The dreaded mid-innings wobble saw us at 159 for 7, until Matt Lake (41 not out) got us up to 216 all out. Enough runs, surely?

Lingfield responded with some heavy hitting and achieved this for the loss of only three wickets.

Some days you just take off your hat to the opposition!

So, for Turners Hill CC the season has come to a premature end. A shame for many reasons, but let’s hope we can turn around our fortunes for next year.

MOVIE SHOWS COMING TO THE ARK Cinema comes to Turners Hill this month with a big-screen showing of highly-acclaimed film The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society at The Ark on Wednesday September 14.

Organised by the Parish Council in association with Curzon Country Cinema, doors open at 19.30 and the show ends at 22.00. Seats cost £6 and movie-goers can pay at the door or reserve places and pay on line at www.curzoncountrycinema.co.uk This will be the first of a regular programme of big-screen picture shows at The Ark. Coming next will be Finding Your Feet on October 31 and Book Club on November 28.

We are taking part in the World's Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday September 28 10.00 to 12.00 at The Ark. Please join us for coffee and home-made cakes to support a great cause.

The Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s biggest fund-raising event for people facing cancer. Last year more than £27 million was raised nationwide.

CRAWLEY JETS PIN DOWN VILLAGE MARBLES PRIZE For the fourth year running Crawley invaders Johnson Jets swooped on Turners Hill Tollymen’s annual summer tournament at their Red Lion HQ last month and carried off the team prize, a pin of Harvey’s Best Bitter.

Our two teams the Tollymen led by Will Aitchison and the Lions skippered by Andy Maclean came up against each other in the first game of the day with the Lions victorious 4-1.

In the early rounds played on a league basis the Tollymen only managed one win, but a remarkable one being a close 14-12 triumph over all-conquering Johnson Jets, the only game they lost all day.

The Lions came almost as close to beating the Jets, going down by just one marble 11-10 after John Roberts ‘killed’ former World Champ Paul Smith who in other games found form including one break of 18. Otherwise, the Lions did manage one other win 10-6 against eventual semi-finalists the Barrel Scrapers who promptly gained revenge on our sides by whacking the Tollymen 14-7.

In the Final the Jets beat Yorkshire Meds 25-18 while the Individuals prize of a crate of Harveys ‘Blues’ went to another former world champ Darren Ray of Handcross Forty-Niners who scored ten.

Our best in the competition were Danny Aitchison and Will Church both with five.

Tollymen skipper Will Aitchison summed up: “Our sides showed glimpses of improvement at last and aside from that everybody enjoyed a great social afternoon out in the sun. In fact several visiting players said they liked our tournament better than the World Championships!”

So, with a lovely summer behind us when we enjoyed a very sociable August meeting with a lovely buffet, a very successful stall at the sunny Turners Hill Fete creating some amazing topiary flower trees and the ongoing Walking Netball sessions, we now head into our autumn programme.

Speaker at our September meeting is Louise Peskett with a talk entitled ‘Notorious Women of Sussex’ and Hilltop member Diane is leading the October meeting with an art class. LES PARISIENNES OPEN NEW ARTS SOCIETY SEASON Nigel Emery Arts Society Turners Hill’s 2018/19 season begins on September 25 with an illustrated talk given by best-selling author Anne Sebba on the subject: Les Parisiennes: How women lived, loved and died in Paris from 1939-49.

We offer ten talks each season, enjoyed by more than 120 of our members each month.

Highly-qualified speakers will entertain us with subjects as diverse as Jazz, Gaudi’s Cathedral Masterpiece, The Borgia Family, The World of Grayson Perry, Power and Pageantry on the Thames and much more. Why not come along and see why so many turn up at The Ark each month?

We are a very friendly group and welcome visitors and new members.

Anne Sebba’s presentation will be a great start to the season. Les Parisiennes is a story about women’s lives during the dark years of Nazi occupation and beyond. This includes British and American women caught in Paris, as well as native-born resisters, who were eventually sent to camps; couturiers and jewellers -some of whom flourished in wartime - as well as actors, singers, night club dancers and housewives. The lecture opens with a circus ball held by Elsie de Wolfe at magnificent Villa Trianon, a chateau in the grounds of the Palace of Versailles. Many guests could not believe that war was imminent. The talk ends with Christian Dior’s lavish new look in 1947 as well as a perfume, Miss Dior. The perfume was named after his sister Catherine, a resister, who had only just survived a prison camp and never wanted to talk about her experiences.

Doors open at 10.15 for free tea and coffee. The talk will begin at 11.00 and lasts an hour.

ST LEONARD’S BELL RINGERS EXTEND BIKE RIIDE THANKS

Although we didn’t have the heat of last year, it certainly meant that the Bell Ringers Bike Ride stall sold a lot of tea and coffee and our meat was sold out by 13.30. It was our shortest day to date - yet we still made a great £1,113 for St Leonard’s Church and the British Heart Foundation. This wouldn’t be possible without the huge support from a number of people who readily volunteer.

Thanks go to Sue Elson and Peter for the driveway, electrics and storage; Rachel and Martin Jones for driveway and water supply; Penny and the Sarahs for lugging various bits of equipment across the village and back again; the two Sarahs, Suzi, Nick and Anwyn for food prep; and - on the day - to Carol and Peter, Helen and Nick, Sarahs, Suzi, Robin, Penny, Helen and Imogen.

What a team! I certainly enjoy the day because of the fun team spirit. Thank you.

Thank you Bellringers for all your hard work on Cycle Sunday. You did a magnificent money-raising job and raised £726 for the Church. Due to lots of hard work in The Ark kitchen on a very hot day, a further £184 was raised by Friends serving traditional afternoon teas at July’s Village Fete.

BOOK WORM CORNER

Amid Village Fete bustle in the summer a vaguely familiar figure was busy selling and signing books under a gazebo. It turned out to be Julie Anne Rudd who lived at Worth Hall for 15 years from 19862001.Julie worked at various times as a journalist for the East Grinstead Courier, Observer and the Mid Sussex Times, but has now turned author with her debut tale The Hippies of Haggleby Hall.

It tells of friends, branded by locals as ‘hippies’ buying and doing up a run-down Sussex country mansion where a “series of strange and scary events lead them on a quest to find what happened to former owner Milton Fielding-Winters who vanished into thin air years before.”

Julie lived at Worth Hall with her late husband Bob and two friends so it’s easy to see where the inspiration for Haggleby Hall comes from, but there the similarity ends.

Julie said: “In reality Worth Hall was a lovely old country home with very friendly vibes.”

Julie’s now grown-up children Alex and Becky went to the village school here, but it all became too much when Bob, who died in 2006, became ill with cancer.

Married to second husband Chris, a former Daily Express librarian, Julie now lives in Devon, near Tavistock, so why come all the way up to Turners Hill village fete to flog her books? “Oh, I come back three times a year. I can’t keep away! It’s lovely to see old faces again.”

WORTH HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

Our annual Summer Show held in the Dunlop Hall at the Ark on Sunday July 22, alongside the Village Fete, was again a great success with exhibition entries up to 477 and visitors entering the show also up in numbers on last year. RHS judges said that the quality was once again of a very high standard and I am sure that anyone visiting the show was very impressed with the wonderful exhibits on display. Next event is Crawley Down Village Fayre on Saturday September 8 where we will be exhibiting and selling dahlias. Spring-flowering bulbs will also be on sale and promotional information/photos about the Society will be on display.

On Saturday September 22 we have our annual organised coach visit, which this year is to the Autumn Fair at Parham House & Gardens. The cost is just £20 which includes both coach and entrance. Pick-ups are from Turners Hill Park at 09.30; The Crown at 09.45 and Crawley Down shops at 10.00. SOLAR FARM AND CAMPSITE FIRES TACKLED

Improvement works at the station are going well and are nearly completed. Turners Hill Fire & Rescue Services team currently has three potential new recruits, but we are still looking for more.

Turners Hill crews were first on the scene to a serious fire at a solar farm in West Hoathly.

A container housing electrical inverters for the farm was engulfed in fire when crews arrived.

Initial concern was that the power generated from the solar panels meant all electrical components were still live. A decision was made to protect the surrounding containers from the spread of fire and ground monitors were used to start extinguishing the blaze so that crews were not at risk from electrocution. Once the engineer confirmed all power had been isolated, crews entered the container to fully extinguish the outbreak. Due to multiple calls to a caravan fire on a campsite at a local festival, crews from four different stations were deployed. With resources sent the fire was contained to one camper-van and some trees, rather than spreading through out the campsite.

BIG BAND CONCERT FOR SULLIVAN’S HEROES

After a successful result at the Village Fete when well over £800 was banked, local charity Sullivan’s Heroes will be hitting more high notes at a special fund-raising concert in Haywards Heath next month. That’s when the ConChord Big Band presents ‘An Evening with Glenn Miller and Friends’ at Clair Hall on Sunday October 14.

The event is being organised by Mid Sussex District Council and its Chairman Bruce Forbes on behalf of Sullivan’s Heroes to fund grants for disabled children’s home adaptations.

A Turners Hill resident, Councillor Forbes has nominated Sullivan’s Heroes as his specially-chosen charity during his term in the chair at MSDC. The 17-piece ConChord orchestra will perform as the war-time US Army Air Force Band presenting music and songs of the big band era. All are invited to the concert which begins at 19.30. Tickets cost £15 a person (£12 concessions) and are available from Clair Hall Box Office on 01444 455440, or via www.clairhall.org (See separate poster elsewhere in this edition for details.)

The charity extends thanks to everyone who supported Sullivan’s Heroes at the Village Fete.

The ex-duty free jewellery and gifts on sale at the stand – all generously donated by Scorpio Worldwide – were just as well received as always, with all proceeds providing grants for disabled children. The Raffle – with prizes generously donated by The Crown, Crawley Town Football Club and Scorpio Worldwide – also proved popular with meals, football tickets, watches, jewellery and electronics on offer. Sincere thanks also to The Crown whose ‘Sully’s Bar’ Beer Tent provided a welcome selection of refreshments on such a scorching day, with all profits generously donated to Sullivan’s Heroes. Thank you to everyone involved – your generosity raised a fantastic £865.34. * In a further fund-raising initiative, Sullivan’s Heroes has been selected as one of three local community groups being supported at the John Lewis branch in Tunbridge Wells over three months from August to October.

By SHEILA CALDWELL WEATHER WATCH Well, did we have a hot spell or not? All of us were melting, even the flora and fauna. I just wonder if that was our Summer over.

WORK ON THE PARK Work carries on - the old home at 14 Nightingale Lane has been removed from the Park and a lovely new home on 12 Blackbird Hill delivered. Homes here are always on the move with residents moving in and out. Sometimes it is difficult to keep track.

PARK TO STAGE OPEN WEEKEND From Friday October 12 to Sunday 14, the Park will be staging an Open Weekend when homes being sold by Berkeley Parks will be open to the public. Do come along, you might be surprised at what you see.

REFUSE FREIGHTERS VISIT The next visit of the refuse freighters is scheduled for Sunday September 2, so depending on when you receive your copy of this Parish News, it is hoped that you have used the service or intend to use it.

As usual, the drivers will help you if needed. Please remember that if the service is not used, we are in danger of losing it altogether. The next visit of the freighters is scheduled for Sunday November 11.

WORTH IN THE COMMUNITY DAY Worth School pupils visited the Park back in July and 11 residents took up their offer of ‘Community Day’ help. Weather was excruciatingly hot, but the volunteers did a sterling job under the circumstances. Lawns were cut, gardens weeded, hand rails rubbed down and re-varnished, paths swept and garden sheds tidied - and this was only a few of the jobs undertaken. Hopefully we will be offered this ‘Worth in the Community’ service again in the future.

FAMILY FUN DAY AND BBQ This year the Park once again held its Family Fun Day and BBQ in July. Blessed with fine weather though maybe too hot for some - a good time was had by all. Although attendance was sadly down on last year, the event was still a great success. Thanks go to a very generous donation from Mid Sussex Cars Ltd which enabled us to donate £400 to each of the following charities: St Catherine’s Hospice; Dementia UK; and Sullivan’s Heroes. A big ‘thank you’ also has to go to all those who helped on the day or provided raffle prizes.

NEW STREET MAP SHOWS THE WAY

On Friday August 10 our new, long-awaited Street Map was erected at the entrance to the Park. Hopefully this new reconfigured map will assist workmen and visitors alike.

Not only does it show every street with homes and their numbers but also every fire hydrant and fire point.

No one should get lost now!

Obituary DOROTHY GWENDOLINE ‘GWEN’ FREESTONE As a professional singer in the big band music era, Gwen Freestone experienced the glitz and glamour of post-war show business. She also embraced the rather more gritty environment of Saturday afternoon football pitches where she served as a lineswoman, becoming one of the country’s first female soccer officials. A Midlands girl born and bred, Gwen moved south with her late husband Jim in 1980 to be close to family in Turners Hill. Over the ensuing 38 years, she became an active, respected and much-liked member of the village community.

Spotted singing along at social club one day, the young Gwen Freestone (née Knight) was invited to get up for a solo. She performed to great applause and was duly invited to return the following week. Gwen became such an attraction that other bookings flooded in. Her songstress fame spread to such an extent that she ended up performing professionally with such big band greats as Ted Heath and Johnny Dankworth and Cleo Laine, plus comedian Bob Monkhouse.

Gwen’s musical talents continued to entertain family and friends on many a party occasion well into her senior years.

Dorothy Gwendoline Freestone, always known as ‘Gwen,’ –was born in Rushden, Northamptonshire, in 1922. After school – where she became swimming champion and sang in the Girls Guides choir – Gwen went to work in the renowned Northampton shoemaking industry. During the Second World War, she was recruited to the emergency services on air-raid warning duties. It was during wartime, singing in the local church choir, that she met her husband-to-be, James ‘Jim’ Freestone, a shoe factory engineer then serving in the Royal Navy. They were married on Christmas Day 1943, when Jim was on brief shore leave.

After the war, Jim returned to work becoming Chief Engineer at the John White Shoe Company while Gwen pursued her singing career. Among their weekend hobbies was football – Jim played for Rushden Town FC (later to become Rushden & Diamonds) and Gwen joined in as an enthusiastic flag-waving lineswoman.

Another cherished pastime was freshwater fishing which Gwen and Jim enjoyed peacefully for many years at waterside spots around Turners Hill, especially Rowfant’s Horsepasture Lake.

Their son Paul, who eventually led their way to Turners Hill, was born in 1946. After becoming a travel agent in Northants he moved to London, got married and set up his family home in Rowfant where he and his wife Beverley raised two children, Tom and Elizabeth. When Jim retired in 1980, he and Gwen wanted to be close to their family and made the move to Turners Hill Park. They both took to the village immediately, making friends and enjoying community activities.

As a natural entertainer, Gwen was the life and soul of many a party and social gathering. She was an enthusiastic member of the Women’s Institute, helped out at the TH Park Social Club and became a regular worshipper at St Leonard’s. Gwen and Jim celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary – marked by a special congratulatory card from HM The Queen - in Turners Hill.

Following Jim’s death in 2007, Gwen devoted herself to her family – especially her grandchildren and the two great-grandchildren who subsequently came into her life. She will be remembered with much love and admiration by them and her many friends.

Gwen Freestone was born on November 15 1922. She died on August 15 2018, aged 95.

Her funeral will take place at 13.15 on Monday September 24 at Surrey & Sussex Crematorium.

JOHN ROBERTS INTERVIEWS……

One of the most familiar figures in and around Turners Hill must surely be ‘John The Taxi’ driving by as owner of Village Cars. During a lull between fares John Roberts flagged him down for a chat about life behind the wheel and, unexpectedly, the Swinging Sixties…

It stretches the imagination now, but the comfortable figure of our taxi-man John Farmborough was once in the thick of Swinging Sixties London and as recognisable down Portobello Road as here in the village.

John was born at Ilford, Essex, but after a year his parents moved to Ealing where he was brought up, but more importantly they also took a grocer’s shop on the Portobello Road where he started work.

With Carnaby Street and King’s Road in Chelsea, Portobello was at the heart of life for the bright young things who set about revolutionising what had been a grey post-war world. “ Every Saturday they’d all be there, beautiful young girls swishing by in their mini-skirts and celebrities like The Kinks and even Bruce Forsyth all mixing in. They changed what the road was like.

“Before it had been a bit rough. You had to keep your eyes peeled for shoplifters and one day my mum saw a man stabbed outside the front window, but once the Swinging Sixties took hold the place was buzzing. It was a really vibrant atmosphere.”

Nor was that all. In those days of Mods and Rockers John says he was a scooter-riding Mod! He recalls with some relish: “We used to head off regularly all riding down to Brighton or Margate. Of course there were scraps with Rockers, a few confrontations in those days and I did get thumped once, but I mainly kept clear of any trouble. “ I even had a motorbike for a while, but didn’t really take to it. My scooter was one of the best, a GT 200. It cost me about £600. If you could find one now it would set you back around £7,000, but a few years ago I did pick up a second-hand one. It cost £1,000 to do up, but I sold it for £3,000.”

With the shooting-star Sixties lifestyle finally burned out and John embracing adulthood he came to Sussex in 1974.

Beautiful young lady He recalls: “I went on holiday to Spain and met a beautiful young lady from Handcross. Elaine became my wife and we went on to have four children. We moved for the first year into Bowers Place at Crawley Down before we got a Turners Hill council house in Withypitts which I eventually bought.

John took a job with Aircraft Catering Services at Gatwick. He said: “ After two years I was made up to Port Steward in charge of 20 people catering planes and liaising with the crews.”

Alas, this came to an abrupt end in 1981: “My wife left me and I had to leave the airport to look after four children aged from three to seven. I had to live off benefits, but there were some really wonderful neighbours in Withypitts.

“At Christmas the whole road clubbed together to buy us a hamper. I’ll never forget that. It was a lovely gesture. And we had a friend Michelle across the road who came in and helped with the kids. She was spending so much time there she moved in and eventually in 1987 we married and had a daughter Carley.”

Life was perking up for John in other ways: “The bloke next-door Tony Venn was a cabbie and asked me to do a bit of work for him in the evenings. That led to me going full time with East Grinstead Cars. Mind you, with the little one, it was a bit tricky sleeping after working late.

“Anyhow, after a couple of years or so I slowly realised there was no taxi in the village so I thought I’d start up for myself working from home. I had some cards and leaflets done and plastered them around Turners Hill.

“Reaction was instant. I was so busy I had to get my brother-in-law Ross to help, but even then Saturday nights were chaotic. We needed more drivers and it got too big to work from home anymore. Fortunately Michael Ward who was manager at Rowfant House offered us an outbuilding to use as an office. We now had ten drivers and contracts for schools and so forth.”

It was too good to last. One day John went on holiday: “When I got back there was a note on the desk saying ‘thanks for everything John, but we’re starting on our own.’ There had been unrest and five drivers including Ross broke away and thought they could do better themselves.

……JOHN THE VILLAGE TAXI-MAN “I was left with contracts and not enough drivers. I had to wind it down. As drivers left I didn’t replace them and worked from home again. I’ve been running the taxi on my own now for 12 years.”

Along the way though, the walk-out was by no means the end of John’s woes. In 2002 his second wife Michelle died from cancer. Lesser men might have been floored by such blows, but instead John floored it, putting his foot down to keep on keeping on with the taxi work.

And now at last it really does seem life might be happy ever after. This summer John married again, to Maria Price whose late husband Derek was also a cabbie.

John says: “I sold the place in Withypitts and we’ve moved to live in Lion Lane.

Maria is a wonderful woman and is also my taxi controller, taking all the bookings.”

Some bookings take him well away from the village, even as far as Manchester (fare about £300), Birmingham and Salcombe in Devon being some jaunts.

There is a downside too of course, in the form of strange customers: “In the days of Martine’s nightclub at East Grinstead I had a group of drunk youths who got in the car at 2 a.m. and then said they wanted to go to Croydon. There was no way I was doing that, specially as they probably wouldn’t have paid, but if I’d refused there would have been a riot. So I told them to sit back and then just drove round to the police station when Grinstead still had a nick. A policeman came out to see what was going on and the lads jumped out and fled!

“Another time a load of drunk yobs loudly stumbled out of the Royal Oak at Crawley Down and into the cab with yelling kids and a dog they pushed into the back. Some were demanding to go to Crawley, others to Lingfield. They didn’t know where they wanted to go. I waited till we got to Felbridge traffic lights which were on red, stopped, turned off the engine and told them all to ‘GET OUT!’ “Traffic was piling up behind when the lights turned green, car horns were hooting and soon they thought better of it and went, thank goodness.”

These days working for himself John can pick and choose his custom, specially as he will turn 70 in January. He says: “I can take days off when I like and customers understand. I enjoy a bit of fishing on Rowfant lakes and I’ve been a Fulham fan all my life.”

Incidentally, cabbies like their tips, but here’s one from him to us: “I’ve been a season ticket holder for 23 years so there won’t be a taxi at weekends when Fulham are playing at home.

“When I’m 70 I shan’t retire. I don’t know what I’d do if I did. I like meeting people and shall carry on as long as I can pass the medical drivers have to take. I would say that for Maria and I life is now content.”

The God of All Hope

by Jackie Lake It was in June 2000 that our eldest daughter went for a routine scan at 36 weeks pregnant with her third child. She received the devastating news that her unborn baby had only 3 chambers to its heart, not 4. After much consultation she was told there was very little hope that the baby would survive birth. Up until now the baby had sustained life by using its Mother’s supply of oxygenated blood. This would no longer happen outside the womb. The outlook was bleak. No hope. As Christians, our daughter and her husband turned to God. Through the Bible they were led to the words in Romans 4 vs 8 speaking of Abraham and his wife Sarah who were childless.

They too made the decision to choose hope. Their child was born, a little daughter, who fought for life. In gratitude they named her Jessie HOPE. Why am I telling you this story now? Jessie Hope has gone on to overcome many difficulties including open heart surgery as a baby and at 4yrs of age. She has grown into a caring, considerate, compassionate young woman. Just recently she received her A-level results, attaining grade A’s in Chemistry. Biology and Geography. She will now go onto one of the top universities to study environmental science. We don’t know what the future holds for Jessie, but we do know she has HOPE in God. As believing Christians we are not assured of an easy journey through life. We are confronted with many difficulties and disappointments. Three young women in our fellowship have this year faced sad and difficult times. They have looked for hope in their circumstances. One’s father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. She took on a gruelling 117 mile bike ride across France to raise money for research into this disease which affects so many men and to bring hope for the future.

Another young woman has just returned from a treacherous trek up the Andes in Peru at 4,800 metres above sea level. She is supporting MIND a mental health charity in memory of a dear friend who took his own life in March 2017. She wants to bring hope to those in despair.

Finally, in November this year a young woman will run 10K for the charity “Tommy’s” who give support to those facing the sadness, like herself, of miscarriage. They all personally know the God of all hope and long to bring that hope to others.

If you or somebody you love is facing a situation that seems to have no hope, consider seeking the God of all HOPE. Our Pastor Geoff Chapman would be pleased to listen and pray for you in your situation.

A Sussex Notebook….

MAGIC ABROAD IN THE AIR

t was one of those hot, too-hot August days. One of those days when the land lies still and silent under the shimmering glare of a cloudless sky, and nothing stirs. I walked along the bridleway down through the woods of Oldhouse Warren, down to where our parish meets Balcombe and Worth and Slaugham and Crawley. There was welcome shade under the leafy canopy of those glorious giant ancient beech trees in the greenwood.

Coming to the footbridge over Stamford Brook, I sat on the bank of the stream that meanders quietly, slowly through the woods. It was cool there under the trees. Spots of sunshine speckled the smooth surface of the brook. I thought back over the best part of seventy years, the years I have known this brook and these woods. Through all those many years, memories of boyhood days spent exploring and camping there have been perfectly preserved for me in Coleridge’s words: A noise like of a hidden brook / In the leafy month of June / That to the sleeping woods all night / Singeth a quiet tune.

I recalled, too, that in those early years I had memorised lines from Keats’s ‘Ode to a Nightingale’, which are with me still. Clearly, the poet knew beech woods just like those that I knew in Oldhouse Warren, as he wrote about a nightingale that In some melodious plot / Of beechen green, and shadows numberless / Singest of summer in full-throated ease.

Earlier in the year, on an especially beautiful spring day, as the whole world was coming alive again, I was walking with a friend across the Knepp estate, between West Grinstead and Shipley.

Knepp Castle is a restored early 19th century Nash building. Its ancient predecessor was an 11th century Norman castle, of which only a fragment remains as a familiar landmark on a knoll by the Worthing road. Some years ago, the present owner of Knepp, the 10th baronet Sir Charles Burrell, began a pioneering project to ‘re-wild’ much of his estate, by using free-roaming grazing animals – long-horned cattle, ponies, pigs, deer – to create new habitat for wildlife. Rare birds and butterflies now breed there.

My friend and I passed Knepp’s lake, said once to have been the largest stretch of fresh water in the south-east, now being restored. A pair of great-crested grebes was courting, seeming to stand up on the water as they faced each other, shaking their heads in their display. We went down through a thicket. And there, in a magical moment – a nightingale was singing!

Slightly larger than its cousin the robin, the nightingale does not share the redbreast’s colourful plumage, but is a rather dull brown and grey bird. What the nightingale lacks in colour, though, it more than makes up for with its magnificent song, a byword for beauty. Keats got it right with ‘full-throated ease’. Certainly it is a very rich and powerful song. Beginning with a series of slow, single notes, it rises into a crescendo of never-to be-forgotten bubbling and fluting. The nightingale sings both by night and by day.

A few weeks later I was walking near the Knepp estate again, along the River Adur at Shipley. The air seemed to be full of swallows and – even better – swifts, whose numbers have declined by a quarter in the past five years. Best of all, there was the unmistakable dreamy purring of a turtle dove, once a sound always to be heard in the summer fields, but now absent for many years. Thanks to Knepp’s rewilding, turtle doves have returned to breed in Sussex. Nightingales, too.

They don’t write (or sing) love songs like this one anymore, but those of us of a certain age remember it on the war-time wireless: That certain night / The night we met / There was magic abroad in the air / There were angels dining at the Ritz / And a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square. It’s true.

The angels are optional, but when a nightingale sings, there is magic abroad in the air!

WORTH ABBEY NEWS TURNERS HILL COMMUNITY WORTH SCHOOL COMMUNITY DAY A ‘HUGE SUCCESS’ From gardening for the elderly to preparing refugees for their driving theory test, the third annual ‘Worth in the Community Day’ during July was a huge success.

Worth School students spent a day volunteering for a variety of projects as part of an initiative to give something back to the community. Among the many activities pupils were involved in were cleaning benches and weeding at Turners Hill Pond, tidying up at St Leonard’s Church, cutting back overgrown vegetation at The Ark and helping the elderly with general garden maintenance at Turners Hill Park.

In East Grinstead, students were joined by former Mayor Julie Mockford in litter picking, planting and general gardening at Compass Garden and King George’s Field, while another group spent the day clearing Himalayan Balsam from green space near Gatwick.

There were several activities taking place at Worth School itself, including drama and musical performances for residents of local care and nursing homes, spending the day supervising sports activities with 55 children from Turners Hill Primary School and working with refugees on CV writing and interview skills, as well as preparing them for their driving theory test.

Some of the more art-minded students were joined by teachers and parishioners in designing and completing a mural which will be hung in the Narthex of the Abbey Church.

Idea of the day, which was part of the School’s wider curriculum programme, was to provide pupils with a greater insight into community issues and to consolidate on volunteering activities in which they have been involved throughout the year.

Head Master Stuart McPherson said: “We firmly believe in providing our pupils with the most rounded education we can. It is important to us that they can put something back into the local community.”
