BARBARA GOES UP FOR THE CUP As winner of the village’s Civic Award for 2017, Barbara Podbury went up for the cup at last month’s Parish Council meeting when the coveted trophy and citation was presented by Council Chairperson Thelma Mason. Barbara was chosen unanimously by Council members in recognition of her voluntary service to the community over many years in a range of activities. Notably, she founded and has continued to organise the Boxing Day Run for 13 years, served as Churchwarden at St Leonards, coordinates the popular Body & Soul Walks and helped set up the Art Festival.

The Parish News team adds its congratulations to the many richly-deserved plaudits she has already received. Well done, Barbara!

INSIDE THIS EDITION There’s plenty more news and information in this first edition of 2018. Included is a welcome to our new Parish Councillor, 29-year-old Owen O’Grady. He and his family have lived in the village for six years and Owen looks forward to serving “this special community.”

Then, there’s explanation of that unannounced arrival of contractors and heavy machinery in Old Vicarage Field behind Lion Lane which surprised many residents. It was all to do with a few days’ground survey work as a prelude to future development, but did – literally - stir the mud.

The Parish Council also reports that Hartmires Investments now has permission for a burial ground chapel and car park in the old strawberry field, after its planning appeal was allowed.

On a rather more poignant note, this issue marks the recent passing of two well-known villagers, Graham Pearce and Sheila Bristow. All this and more inside……`

INTRODUCING ‘WARM SUNDAY’ COSY SERVICES Although we have a new boiler it is very hard to get the lower part of the Church warm.

Once a month, therefore, we are going to have a cosy ‘Warm Sunday’ service in the Hall. The first will be the 10.30 Parish Eucharist on Sunday February 18. (See Church Diary page).

RECORD CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR FUND RAISERS More than £4,000 was raised for St Leonard’s in four major festive season activities - the Fair Game Draw, the Christmas Tree Festival, the Boxing Day Run and Ridge House Coffee Morning. The total represents something of a record and very grateful thanks must go to the respective organisers, John Roberts, Beryl Crowhurst, Barbara Podbury and Anwyn Daniels. We are equally grateful to all those in the community who supported their tremendous efforts.

The money goes towards our church’s ever-increasing running/maintenance costs and is truly appreciated. Well done!

YEAR OF PRAYER – A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM BISHOP MARK The Diocese of Chichester is celebrating 'The Year of Prayer' and Bishop Mark writes: “Early in February, the Church remembers Jesus being presented in the Temple.

Wise and holy old Simeon, utters the words of the Nunc Dimittis, including: to be a light to lighten the Gentiles and to be the glory of your people, Israel. It is the proclamation that Jesus is not simply for those associated with him, the Israelites, but for everyone else as well, the non-Israelites, the Gentiles.

“Clergy get used to people casually referring to God and to prayer as 'your department' or 'your business'. 'Have a word with your boss' people joke; 'say one for me.'

It is as if people acknowledge prayer as valuable, even important, but consider it someone else’s business. Perhaps there is too much truth in those jokes that imply prayer is for the specialists or professionals rather than everyone else.

The 2018 Year of Prayer reminds us that prayer in the name of Jesus, like Jesus himself, is for everyone and not just for those most publicly associated with him.

“Certainly clergy should pray for their people daily at Morning and Evening Prayer, but they were also bidden to ring the church bell to tell everyone that it is happening. Church bells both announce that people are being prayed for and call them to join in whether in Church or elsewhere. If you cannot hear a church bell, you can set an alarm on your watch or mobile phone creating a regular reminder to pray. There are many opportunities to learn about praying this year - not least in Lent which also begins this month - but let me commend to you the Daily Prayer of the Church, which you can download to your PC, smartphone or tablet. Just visit your App Store, search for Church of England, download and join in.”

The Parish Council Office is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 09.00 and 12.30, but a message can be left at anytime or an e-mail sent to the above e-mail address.

Council meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month starting at 19.30, with 15 minutes for public participation. You are very welcome to join us for part or all of any meeting. The agenda is displayed in advance on the village notice board. Our next meeting is on February 6.

GRAHAM PEARCE The Council held a minute’s silence at the start of the Parish Meeting on January 9 in memory of Graham who played such an important part on the Council as past Chairman and Vice Chairman. Graham was always generous with his time and would often offer his help and advice when it came to the maintenance and updating on the inside of The Ark, or with anything that was needed around the village. The Council also flew the Village Flag at half-mast on the day of his funeral out of respect for a gentleman who was not only well known to the people of Turners Hill but also played such a big part in the village.

He will be missed by so many.

NEW PARISH COUNCILLOR We are pleased to welcome Mr Owen O’Grady as a new Parish Councillor. He was co-opted at the January Parish Council Meeting and we look forward to working with him.

THANK YOU The Council would like to thank the Estate for once again donating a beautiful Christmas Tree to the village and would also like to thank those who gave up their time to put the tree up and then take it down.

OLD VICARAGE FIELD You may have noticed work being carried out in Old Vicarage Field, this is survey work that the Estate are carrying out in preparation for submitting a planning application as per the site highlighted within the Neighbourhood Plan. This work will be ongoing possibly over the next couple of years. We have also been made aware that the track adjacent to the allotments was damaged during the surveying and this will be repaired once ground conditions allow in the spring.

HARTMIRES INVESTMENTS APPEAL – BURIAL GROUND SITE The appeal has been allowed and planning permission has been granted for the construction of a new chapel building with associated landscaping within the existing burial ground and an enlarged car parking area for 37 cars.

CLOCKFIELD SITE BREAK IN

The Clockfield site was broken into before Christmas and another attempt has been made more recently.

Shanly Homes has installed an alarm and asks that anyone hearing it should please call the Police immediately.

STREET LIGHTS Please continue to report any problems to the Clerk giving the exact location of the street light, for example: ‘opposite Tarana’s, Selsfield Road.’

WASTE FREIGHTER DATE

Date for the next visit of the household refuse and garden waste freighter is Sunday, February 4.

As usual, the freighter will be behind The Ark from 10.00 to 11.00; and then at Turners Hill Park between 11.10 and 12.00. Help and directions will be on hand. It is important to use these special services to ensure they continue. Please remember that the following items cannot be accepted: Electrical items; tyres; rubble and hardcore; baths, shower trays, toilets, sinks; gas canisters; paint pots with any contents. TRIBUTE TO GRAHAM PEARCE

By Turners Hill Parish Council The very unexpected death of Graham Pearce on Boxing Day, has left everyone extremely shocked and our heartfelt condolences go to Brenda, Andrew, Stuart and all the family. Graham played an important part in the life of the village and the Parish Council, he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

On moving to Turners Hill more than 35 years ago Graham and Brenda soon became involved in village life especially with the school. The strong connection with the school lasted long after Andrew and Stuart went to Imberhorne and beyond the establishment and enlargement of Turners Hill Tots.

Graham supported the school fundraising events, village fete and fundraising for The Ark both in terms of financial support and physical help. Graham also volunteered for grass cutting duty at St. Leonard’s church yard, carried out repairs to village street furniture like the finger signs. He was always available to provide help, advice and support for The Ark and his building background was extremely useful to the Council.

Graham joined the group producing the Village Design Statement and then later served on the Neighbourhood Plan Committee which involved many hours of work, discussions and planning. His planning and building knowledge and knowledge of the many local businesses were great assets in producing both of these planning documents.

As a Councillor Graham also served on the Ark Community Executive which is responsible for the management of the hall. As such he was able to advise the Council on a major refurbishment project for The Ark and helped to organise and plan the work schedule. He was always on hand to help with minor repairs Graham became a Parish Councillor in May 2007 and was an integral part of the Council for several years.

On becoming a Councillor, Graham was elected to serve as Vice Chairman, a role he undertook until 2010 when he was elected as Chairman. He successfully led the Council in his firm, pleasant and calm way until May 2013 when he stood down from the role. However, he was then once again elected as Vice Chair and continued to put his knowledge and love of the village to excellent use. Graham eventually retired from the Council on December 18 2015 as he and Brenda wanted to be free to enjoy their leisure time. Even then Graham remained on the Neighbourhood Plan Committee helping to plan for Vicarage Field development and the Village Enhancement Scheme.

We are all indebted to Graham and we will remember him, his cheery manner and infectious smile with gratitude and affection.

VILLAGE NEWS OWEN O’GRADY WELCOMED AS NEW PARISH COUNCILLOR

New face on Turners Hill Parish Council is that of recently-appointed Councillor Owen O’Grady. He was formally co-opted last month to fill the seat made vacant by the departure of Councillor Bob Bather.

Owen, 29, has lived at Turners Hill for six years with his wife Zara and sons Jonjo (five) and Kian (three) who both attend the village primary school.

Professionally, he is Managing Director of well-known local company JOG Contractors Ltd., the groundworks specialist.

Outside his busy work and family life, Owen enjoys a range of outdoor activities. Especially, he is an enthusiastic freshwater fisherman.

Following co-option, he was welcomed to the Parish Council and took his seat at the January meeting.

“I very much look forward to serving Turners Hill. It is a special community in which my family and I are pleased to have made our home,” commented Owen.

ARTS SOCIETY TRIPS OFF TO THE FESTIVAL OF BRITAIN

On February 27 at The Ark, Jo Walton BA Dip Hist Art (Oxon) will take The Arts Society Turners Hill on a nostalgic trip back to the 1950s with her highly-acclaimed presentation ‘Don’t make Fun of the Festival: Art, Design and Entertainment at the Festival of Britain.’

Many members and villagers will recall The Festival which opened on May 3 1951. It was intended to be ‘a tonic to the nation’ after nearly six years of austerity following the Second World War. Although many areas of London remained badly bomb-damaged, it was time for optimism.

In the midst of the worst weather since 1815, with strikes, disputes and a plague of rats bedevilling the site on London's South Bank, the press and public were surprised and delighted to find an exhibition filled with ingenuity, whimsy and startling modernity. In this month’s illustrated talk we'll explore the origins of the Festival, including the 1851 Great Exhibition and the 1900 Paris World Fair. We'll hear what people and politicians really thought of the plans as they were being made, and discover how the authorities catered for thousands of visitors in the difficulties of post-war London. We'll explore the works created for the Festival by artists such as Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and many others, and consider the lasting legacies of the Festival, in the fields of architecture and design.

Our AGM takes place on Friday February 16 at The Ark for 19.30. After the formalities there will be time to socialise with a glass of wine and some nibbles.

The Committee is busy with preparations for our main fund-raiser of the year, the French Dinner which is scheduled for Saturday March 3 – 19.00 for 19.30 start at The Ark. The theme this year will be Moulin Rouge and the cost for a four-course meal remains at £24 per person, with wine on the table. Our chosen charity will be Sullivan's Heroes.

‘SPIFFIN’ RESULT FOR FAIR GAME DRAW

Amazingly, the Fair Game Draw 2017 raised an excellent £1,041 for St Leonard’s Church. This was despite not having a shoot prize which has bumped the total in the past, especially when a non-shooter won it and it was auctioned.

It had to be a brief selling period too, just under three weeks, so thanks to everybody who delved deep and bought squares straight away when the boards came round. This was a huge help.

Also the total was boosted by nearly all prizes being donated so… deep breath… massive thanks are due to: Rashes, Old Rowfant, Balcombe and Birch Grove shoots, Shirley Brackpool, Carl Cooper, Roger Brackpool, Joy and Tony Cocklin, Barbara Hobbs (twice over; once for her prizes and again for helping with the draw), Jonathan from Cinder Hill fisheries, Grange Farm, the Red Lion and The Crown, Head Turners, Lingfield Rifle Club, Beryl Crowhurst and Gravetye Manor.

THANKS FOR CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL SUCCESS

Taking place a little earlier than usual, St Leonard’s Christmas Tree Festival was again extremely successful. As well as providing a warm and glittering traditional village welcome to yuletide, the festival raised a record £1,276 for the church.

Grateful thanks go to Paddockhurst Estate and Tulleys Farm for kindly providing the 30 splendid trees; to each of the organisations and businesses which generously sponsored them; to our raffle prize providers; and to all who supported the two-day event.

The beautifully decorated trees created a truly festive atmosphere for the special Mid Sussex District Council Civic Service which took place in St Leonards at the beginning of December.

Here’s to next Christmas!

So here we are well into the New Year with Christmas a distant memory, but members of Hilltop enjoyed two excellent events to celebrate. Firstly, our meeting in December where Gill, Stef, Amber and India entertained us with Christmas songs that we were all happy to join in with. We finished the evening by candlelight with carols and it left us all in very much the Christmas mood. Our annual Christmas meal in January was, once again, at the Crown who did us proud with excellent food and atmosphere.

Last month’s meeting started the year in great style as members joined in with professional belly dancer, Charlotte Desorgher. She gave us an insight into the history of belly dancing and then handed out colourful hip scarves so that we could all copy her moves, to much laughter and enjoyment, as you can imagine.

We were very sad to lose one of our longest serving members, Fay Tomlinson, in December. She had been a member for more than 50 years and was a very special lady. Many members attended her Thanksgiving Service at the Free Church and were made very welcome by her family.

If any ladies are thinking of joining us, now is the time to come along. The next meeting is on Wednesday February 21 when local book shop owner John Pye will be talking about the ‘Adventures of Book Selling’.

NEW KEEP-FIT CLASSES START THIS SPRING

A new 12-week fitness course – ‘Weight off Workshop’ - is to open at The Ark this Spring.

Organised by Mid Sussex Well Being, the two-hour classes will take place on Mondays from 10.00-12.00 starting April 16.

‘Weight off Workshop’ sessions will give tips and tricks to lead a healthy lifestyle, followed by an hour of physical activity to get participants moving. A small cost of £20 covers the full 12 week-course. To book call Mid Sussex Wellbeing Team on 01444 477191.

This new keep-fit course follows the success of The Ark’s ‘Back To Exercise’ classes which finished at the end of January. All those who took part were very grateful to the expertise and enthusiasm of coach Elizabeth Mooney from Albion in the Community, the charity arm of Brighton & Hove Albion FC. * See ‘Weight off Workshop’ poster elsewhere in this edition.

MATT BAILEY MEMORIAL DARTS MATCH It hardly seems possible, but this year is the 11th anniversary of the death in a road accident of highly experienced and popular local motor-cyclist Matt Bailey. Every year since, his death has been marked by friends with a charity Matt Bailey Memorial Darts Match.

This year the gathering is, as always, at the Red Lion, where Matt was a regular, and is fixed for the afternoon of Saturday February 24.

All are welcome to play in this knock-out tournament and contribute to the charity in Matt’s memory.

TOLLEYMEN PREPARE FOR MARBLES CHAMPIONSHIP As Easter is well-advanced again with Ash Wednesday, traditional start of the season, on February 14 and Good Friday on March 30, Turners Hill Tollymen are already planning their annual assault on the World Championships at Tinsley Green.

They ask all would-be players to grab an early copy of the March issue of the Parish News to check dates to join training for the great event.

Obituaries GRAHAM PEARCE A prominent figure in the village for many years, Graham Pearce was acclaimed for his leadership of Turners Hill Parish Council and all-round, unstinting commitment to civic service.

This is duly recognised in the Parish Council’s special tribute to Graham published elsewhere in this edition. In this obituary, his devoted family offer their perspective on Graham’s life in fond personal tribute to him…..

Very sadly Graham passed away on December 26 following a heart attack.

Graham is survived by his wife Brenda, sons Andrew and Stuart their partners Niki and Donna as well as his beloved grandchildren Charlotte, Harry and James. He also leaves a brother and sister Michael & Gillian.

Graham and Brenda married in June 1972, living in Mitcham until moving to Turners Hill with their two sons in 1981.

Graham was born in Croydon and grew up in the Addington area of the town attending the Gilbert Scott Primary School and Shirley Secondary School. After school, Graham became an apprentice in Carpentry & Joinery and worked as a carpenter for several building firms. He increased his knowledge of the construction industry and became a Site Manager continuing in this field until 1981.

Graham then established and ran his own very successful building company, Pearce & Gough Ltd, until 2011.

Not really an avid follower of sport Graham nevertheless enjoyed watching the Formula 1 Grand Prix. He enjoyed playing indoor bowls at the club in West Hoathly where he could also indulge in the social aspects of the club taking his turn serving behind the bar!

He had several interests in life, one of which was CB radio and he belonged to a radio club going under the call sign ‘Rosco’. He made many close friends via the airwaves.

Graham was always interested in cars, including classic cars. He bought Brenda a Morris Minor Traveller to restore, but it soon became his! He also enjoyed restoring a classic tractor to use in his field.

Graham and Brenda continued to enjoy visiting places around the country in their caravan and on the canals travelling by narrow boat accompanied by their dogs.

Holidays abroad in the sunshine were also very important to them.

Graham and Brenda enjoyed their life in Turners Hill and were very involved in - and became part of - the village. Graham stood for election to the Parish Council and served his community tirelessly for ten years.

He was always happy to help and was a generous, honest, kind, hardworking and trustworthy man with a great sense of humour. Graham was liked by all who knew him and will be sadly missed.

Graham Pearce was born in 1950. He died on December 26 2017, following a heart attack.

His funeral took place at St Leonard’s Church, Turners Hill, on January 18. ______________________________

SHEILA MARIE BRISTOW One of the village’s long-standing residents, Sheila Bristow was probably best known in the community from her 40 years behind the counter in the old Village Shop. Always cheerful and helpful, she brightened many a day for so many in Turners Hill. She will also be remembered fondly as a caring good neighbour to those around the home Sheila shared in Lion Lane with husband Roger and their children Mark, Kate and Lisa. In her later years, Sheila received great care, comfort and love from her family during the long illness she suffered with fortitude and much dignity. Here, they pay tribute to Sheila’s life and times….

Sheila’s life has spanned 73 years. She was born on June 2 1944. She has an older sister, Sally. Her Mum, Nora, raised the girls in a loving home in East Grinstead.

She met Roger when they grew up on the same estate and they subsequently married at St Swithun’s Church in East Grinstead on August 28 1968.

With marriage, came motherhood and Sheila became a proud Mum to Mark, Kate and Lisa. Once they were old enough to attend nursery school, Sheila began working in Turners Hill’s Village Shop, while Roger was employed on the Paddockhurst Estate.

Sheila worked in the shop for around 40 years, seeing the changes in management from the Wootens, Horsnells and Steggles. She also provided cleaning services for several village residents, even after she retired from the retail trade.

Most importantly, Sheila became a Grandmother and had a new title – that of ‘Nanny’ – to Rhys, Amy, Harry and Emma. She adored her grandchildren and they idolised her in return.

Sheila looked after her grandchildren, spending hours in the garden with them, while •Sheila behind the counter – serving Turners Hill for 40 years Kate and Lisa returned to work. What will be specially recalled is her characteristic tenacity – and the determination to make the most of everything that each new day presented, big or small.

Above all, Sheila will be remembered for her kindly, helpful and loving heart that has, in one way or another, touched the lives of many people over the years. That is a beautiful gift.

By SHEILA CALDWELL CHRISTMAS AND THE NEW YEAR Well - that’s all folks – it’s now officially over and we are all back to school and work, whichever the case may be. The Christmas decorations on the park were fabulous this year and a lot of work had to be done to put these up. We thank all our residents for the pleasure they gave us.

Before we can blink, the Easter Eggs will be in the shops: no sooner has one event ended than another starts This must be what they call ‘history’ - just one thing after another.

COFFEE MORNING Our Coffee Morning on December 18, although sparse in the number of residents who attended, went off extremely well and we had a real good, old-time sing-along. Most of those who joined us remarked on how much they enjoyed the morning and for those who did not attend - you missed a good one. We thank Roy Cakebread and his colleague for such an entertainment of not just songs, but also poems and funny stories.

PUMPING STATION BREAKDOWN On New Year’s Day, a tanker appeared at the Pumping Station on the Park. Then, three days on, there were four in attendance. What excitement! This facility, however, is not the responsibility of the Park owner, but is owned and run by Southern Water and pumps waste water into the main drains for treatment at the relevant plant. We were very lucky that there were no nasty overflows anywhere and that the problems were solved very quickly and efficiently. The tankers did, however, have to run all night and I believe that some residents were none too happy with the noise. However, better that than the alternative I would say.

FREIGHTER VISIT The next freighter visit will be on Sunday February 4 so please do use it or we might lose it and that would, indeed be a tragedy.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL You may remember me telling you that the Residents Association sponsored a Christmas tree for the St Leonard’s Christmas Tree Festival. It was reported that the event was a great success and we would like to thank Carole Mowbray for all her hard work in dressing our tree which looked absolutely beautiful.

STORMS HIT TREES ON THE PARK Due to the severe storm winds we have been having recently, several trees on the park had to be taken down and others have been identified by the contractor as needing to be felled. We will have to wait and see which ones are to go, but this is one of problems when you live in a highly-wooded area.

NEW RESIDENTS WELCOMED We have had five new residents come to live on the Park since Christmas. We welcome them to the area and hope they will be very happy here.

Thank you everybody who contributed to my Civic Service at St Leonard's in December, especially the choir from Turners Hill School. It was a wonderful turn-out from the village which made it even more memorable. I have received many compliments since regarding the service led by Canon David and on how lovely the Church looked with the Christmas trees. Phil Shoubridge’s generosity by allowing us use of The Crown after the service completed the very special evening.

JOHN ROBERTS INTERVIEWS……….

Talk to any farmer and you will be greeted with a catalogue of woe about the dire state of British agriculture and indeed many have gone under in recent years. It makes you wonder why the rest carry on, but the reason is that they love working the land and being their own boss. Along them is one of the few left standing in the Turners Hill area, Rowfant farmer and onetime East Grinstead rugby stalwart Nick Penn. Donning wellies and splashing through the winter mud John Roberts ventured down on the farm……

When it comes to farming disasters Nick Penn has had his share. Collapsing milk prices, BSE, foot-andmouth, the 1987 hurricane and even a massive barn fire this winter have all raged across Home Farm, Rowfant. Yet still the man defiantly carries on.

Aged 63 and a one-man band, he could easily be forgiven for calling it a day, and he admits: “ I don’t spring out of bed quite like I used to, but working with animals is what I love and farming is what I know so I’ll carry on ‘til I can do it no more. Rowfant is a sort of rural oasis and I feel very privileged to live and farm here.”

Nick, one of six children, was even born on the farm. He says proudly: “I was born in the bedroom where I sleep now.”

His father Barry Penn had begun renting the farm from the Rimington Wilson estate in 1954, the year before Nick was born.

As a child Nick grew up playing around the yard and helping out with harvest and the like, living the ultimate schoolboy rough-and-tumble romantic rural dream.

“We had the freedom to roam off and make camps and there were ponies to ride. I remember once when I was in the Scouts we went all the way to camp in the New Forest in one of Arthur Bowers’s cattle trailers.

“In those days we had a dairy herd, pigs and chicken and I’d help out with putting cows in the stalls, helping with the weaner pigs that came from my granddad at Four Elms, everything, really.” After leaving Holy Trinity School at Crawley when he was 16, Nick went off for two years to Plumpton College to take a National Diploma in agriculture.

Learning on the job

“We possibly did more drinking than studying, but I was learning on the job at home anyway. We had three other farm workers then – a tractor driver, pigman and cowman. Then at harvest various members of the Brackpool and Waddington families would help out too.”

In 1982, the year Nick married his wife Nicky, his parents Barry and Margaret Penn made him an official partner in the farm.

“By then the pigs had gone, but from ten cattle when dad started we had built up a pedigree Friesian Herd to more than 800 at one stage, renting extra land all around Turners Hill and Crawley Down. We were exporting many of them around the world as well.”

It looked like everything was going swimmingly, but this is farming. In 1987 the infamous hurricane struck: “It took off every slate from every roof.”

There were battles with foot-and-mouth and BSE and then, sighed Nick: “On top of everything else we lost the Milk Marketing Board and were at the mercy of the wretched supermarkets. Soon we were losing five pence for every litre of milk we produced.

“Dad and I had a hard conversation about selling the herd. We’d left it to each other to be first to suggest it, but we struggled on for another five years hoping to turn it round.”

It was a lost cause and in 2002 the herd, then 180 strong, had to go. An ambitious young farmer hoping to start up a new life emigrated with the cattle to Canada. Nick recalls: “I was devastated when they went. I got up as usual next morning looking all around, but there was no milking to be done. A farm must have animals and we decided to carry on by crossing British Friesians with a Hereford bull to make the basis of a suckling herd for Beef Cattle.

“Some of the originals are still with us at 17 and 18 years old and in calf again. One is 19!”

………. DEFIANT FARMER NICK PENN In 2005 Barry Penn, who had bought half the farm from the Rimington Wilson estate, retired and died five years later. Nick says: “I was left as a one-man band. Now I farm 187 acres at home and another 150 rented from around the area including the estate. I grow wheat and barley and grass for sileage and hay and the suckling herd is now 95 strong.”

This has been due to in the past to the efforts of his frighteningly huge bull Flanagan who would appear at most unexpected times in unlikely places: “ Flanagan died when he was 17 and people who had him and other cattle in their gardens, tennis court and even swimming pools belong to an exclusive club!”

Along the way too Nick helped the farm survive by renting out land to Sussex Polo Club, but that is coming to an end: “It was a Godsend at the time, but slowly things are turning round now.”

Many know the farm, as shooters and beaters, for its popular small shoot which Nick has run for 23 years and now has a waiting list: “ It’s another diversified use of land which helps encourage wildlife and keeps the woodland managed. Dad started the shoot as a Boxing Day walk-up with a few friends, but now we also rent the Hundred Acre shoot off Padockhurst as part of it. We had a great deal of help there with advice from wise old owls like Bernie Streeter and the late Bill Munro. Shooting is a great leveller. You can have a chap shooting worth £50million and a beater chatting away equally as old friends. It breaks down barriers.”

Elsewhere the name Nick Penn is renowned in East Grinstead rugby circles. As a junior he played for Felbridge touring Europe and the Caribbean. Then as a full back he turned out for East Grinstead from the age of 17 until he was 35, always in the First XV, won 25 Sussex county caps and along the way helped the club win the Sussex Cup against old rival Lewes.

Later he coached the Seven-a-Side team into the Middlesex Sevens at Twickenham and these days goes on tour watching his rugby.

He said: “We’re off to Italy this month. All us old rugby players like to watch England on long, lost weekends.” Then there’s the annual Varsity Match which Nick claims proudly that he has watched for 51 years, albeit including a ten-year gap in front of the telly!

Nick also turned out for Turners Hill Cricket Club when they still ran a Sunday side and spent five years with them as wicket keeper: “ That was in the great days when Peter Bauldry who ran the Red Lion was also club captain and hours of play were determined by pub opening which on Sunday evenings in those days was 7pm. So at 6.45pm it was ‘stumps!’”

Now Nick spends a bit of his summers sailing; racing with former air charter boss Tony Mack aboard his boat Mackfly at Cowes and in the Caribbean. In winter he takes a holiday with Nicky skiing in the Italian Alps. Remarkably despite all that rugger and skiing he has never broken any bones or been injured: “Must be the calcium from all the milk I’ve drunk,” he grins.

It’s just as well he is fit, running a one-man band on the farm. As for the future, daughter Frankie,22, is at Bath University aiming to become a PE teacher so she will not be taking over.

Nick says: “ Dad always told me to remember we are only custodians of the land. It’s no good giving up and knocking all the barns into a housing estate. Farming is about working with animals. So the future is a bigger herd and when I’m too old to do it anymore I’ll get staff in.” ______________________________

Look For The Disturbance

As the boat pulled away from the harbour, the guide turned to the guests on deck and said, ‘If you want to see what you’ve come to see, then look for the disturbance.’ They were hoping to see whales, and the guide went on to explain that the best place to look was where they could see the water disturbed, because that was a sure sign of predators under the surface.

I’m sometimes struck by the fact that people who hunger after God are often looking in the wrong places. We expect to find God when all is calm, when the reality is that he is more likely to be found when our lives are disturbed. Why bother looking for God in the first place if all is well? My own experience is that it’s when my life has been most disturbed that I have sought after God, and in the disturbance found the God of love and peace revealed in Jesus.

In a famous episode from the Bible Jesus is asleep in a boat that his friends are sailing across a lake. It’s only when a storm blows up and they think they might drown that they wake him and find the peace they are longing for.

IT’S ONLY A SPARROW…..

Would you recognise a Pectoral Sandpiper if you saw one? (A what?)

Well, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t.

Sandpipers are small wading birds, with speckled plumage, long bills and long legs. They strut around in shallow water, probing the mud for worms and things, as well as feeding on insects on the surface. The different sandpiper species vary in size, but in general they are about the size of a Starling.

Sandpipers can be seen in many Sussex locations – along the winter shoreline, for example, and at nature reserves like Pulborough and Pagham Harbour, as well as by our rivers, lakes and reservoirs. Some species are resident at all seasons, others are passing through on their way to somewhere else, and yet others are either summer or winter visitors.

Just to complicate things a bit more, the many different kinds of sandpiper fall broadly into two groups, but not all the birds are called “sandpiper”! The Shore Sandpiper group includes waders such as the Common Sandpiper (which is common) and the Pectoral Sandpiper (which is not so common); but also other birds such as the Dunlin and Knot. The second group, the Shank-like Sandpipers, also includes birds with “sandpiper” names but also their close relatives, the Redshank and Greenshank.

All of this, you may be starting to think, suggests the need to be something of a specialist, to be able to identify one sandpiper from another.

First bird book Seventy years ago, as a young schoolboy who had just bought his first bird book and a cheap (and pretty useless) second-hand pair of binoculars, I was just beginning my bird watching hobby. My diary would enthusiastically record seeing Magpies in the fields, and Moorhens on local ponds.

Then one day I was invited to accompany a friend of my father, and another man named Ferguson-Lees (a real ornithologist, I discovered) on a bird-watching trip to Thorney Island, in the south-west corner of Sussex. I recall sitting with them on the sea wall, looking out over the tidal mudflats of Chichester Harbour, at what I thought was “just” a huge flock of roosting gulls. Ferguson-Lees, however, slowly and methodically scanned the birds with his powerful binoculars, and here and there identified and noted something different. Or unusual. Or “special”, you might say.

Ten years or so ago, my wife and I were on holiday in California. I confess to never having really watched foreign birds, if only because I was never sure what I was looking at. That is not to say I did not find them interesting. After all, who could be anything but transfixed by the sight of humming birds, buzzing about like big colourful bees, sucking pollen from exotic flowers, and flying backwards? But while we were walking in some woods, a bird did take my interest, and I asked a passing Californian what it was. His dismissive reply was, “Oh, it’s only a Sparrow!”

All of which brings me to my point. It occurs to me that the unquestioned expertise of the Ferguson-Lees of this world, and the exquisite natural history extravaganzas that people like David Attenborough treat us to, may have blinded us to the little miracles that are literally in our back gardens. It seems to me that we no longer value sparrows.

When visiting the RSPB reserve at Pulborough recently, I looked at the whiteboard at the entrance, recording that day’s sightings. Topping the list was the Pectoral Sandpiper!

Then followed the names of all the other waders and geese and ducks and owls and other birds that one might expect to see there. I did not, however, see sparrows on the list. Perhaps they were deemed to be “only” sparrows.

We will all have noticed there are fewer House Sparrows these days. London, for example, lost three quarters of its sparrows in the ten years to 2001. There were many reasons for the decline (though it may now have slowed), including a loss of nesting sites and food sources, particularly a lack of insects to feed their young. In urban areas, everything from cats to air pollution and pesticides has been blamed. In the countryside, changes in farming practices are thought to have affected the sparrow population.

I have a number of House Sparrows in my garden’s hedges, though. One thing we can do to help these cheeky, noisy birds this winter is to put out bird seed, especially if it includes large grains.

A gospel writer has Jesus say that sparrows may be two a penny, but not one of them falls to the ground without our heavenly Father knowing about it. So, on that account, they are not only sparrows after all!

And if that’s good enough for God, it’s good enough for me.

An introduction to Chichester Cathedral Friends

By Stephen Holloway, Hon Secretary & Trustee Members enjoy a wide range of interesting events During the course of a year the Friends events programme is varied and designed to offer something of interest to all members. On the first Friday of every month, with the exception of April and December when a Spring and Christmas Fair is held, there is a coffee morning.

Periodically there is a ‘Book at Breakfast’ – the book selected by the Cathedral Chancellor; a ‘Food for Thought’ lunch – the Bishop spoke at the last lunch in November; a visit behind the scenes of somewhere interesting - in April 2018 to the County Record Office where the Chichester Diocese records are kept and to the Bell Tower where 80 steps lead to the ringing chamber.

There are day visits to places of interest - this year, in May, to St Nicholas Church Morton Dorset, where the engraved windows were designed by Laurence Whistler; and to the National Trust’s Kingston Lacy House.

In August, visits will be made to Frogmore House and Savill Gardens, Windsor Great Park.

There are usually two residential breaks, one to the near- continent- last year it was to the Keukenhof and Dutch Bulbfields - and one in the UK. Two formal lunches take place, the first was in January to celebrate Epiphany and the second will be in June on the day of the Cathedral Friends Annual General Meeting.

Both of these lunches are followed by a speaker - at last year’s AGM it was Lord Hennessy, the political historian, and this year it will be the sculptor Philip Jackson.
