Dear St. Joseph’s friends, One of the most gratifying rewards of serving on the St. Joseph’s Board of Directors is seeing how our efforts are making a difference at the hospital we all know and love—Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center— and especially in the lives of patients who come from near and far to receive the outstanding care provided here. It is my honor to share some of these successes through this annual report, which documents the solid commitment of each and every one of you, the benefactors of St. Joseph’s Foundation. Your donation epitomizes the “gift that keeps on giving,” ensuring quality medical care is just around the corner from our loved ones, our family members, friends and neighbors, whenever any of us may need it. Your donation also reassures that same standard of care will be available in the future through support of medical education at St. Joseph’s, where young doctors and nurses are receiving training they need to be leaders of healthcare tomorrow. Plus, we can share a sense of pride knowing our fundraising diligence is accelerating research to root out causes and cures for devastating diseases, as well as better forms of treatment to end suffering and restore quality of life to thousands of patients every year. Together, we have achieved so much, yet our work is only beginning. Your ongoing support will help expand programs of care for patients facing a cancer diagnosis, needing a lung transplant, or worrying through a high-risk pregnancy and praying for the safe delivery of their unborn baby. For nearly 50 years Robert S. Flinn, MD, was affiliated with Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. As a cardiologist and pillar of the medical community, he was one of Arizona’s most influential physicians of his time and held multiple leadership positions at the hospital, including chief of medical staff and leader of the cardiology and electrocardiology departments. Fifth-graders Paisen Alder, Erika Fink and Emma Wolfe may be young, but they’re old enough to know what it’s like to lose a family member to cancer. And, they’re passionate and energetic enough to do something about it. After getting a green light from the principal last September, the threesome banded together and launched a school-wide “Smash Cancer!” campaign at Self Development Academy in Mesa. The goal: to raise awareness about cancer while raising money to support care for patients undergoing treatment in the fight against it. They decorated and distributed “Fight Jars” in classrooms, inviting everyone on campus to give whatever they could. They sold “Smash Cancer” bracelets and hosted a donut party. And they encouraged everyone, every day of the school year, to help the cause. This spring, they counted the money and decided to donate it all to cancer programs offered at The University of Arizona Cancer Center at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. In a school assembly attended by nearly 500 students and family members of the Smash Cancer founders, the girls thanked everyone for participating and presented a check in the amount of $1,413.75 to St. Joseph’s Foundation. The story doesn’t completely end there, though.

Lifesaving Surgery Prompts Couple to Leave Their Legacy With St. Joseph’s Mysteriously ill with a life-threatening condition, Bill Taylor could no longer breathe without medical intervention before being referred to the Norton Thoracic Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital. “I kept expecting they’d find the right antibiotic and then send me home, but that wasn’t the case,” says Bill, 70, a semi-retired attorney/social worker. St. Joseph’s specialists diagnosed him with pulmonary fibrosis and said his best treatment option was a lung transplant. But that wasn’t all: Bill also needed a quadruple bypass surgery to repair heart damage due to inherited coronary artery disease. Bill continues to recover from the successful surgeries, extremely appreciative that he can breathe freely once again.
