A Message from the Head Teacher Welcome to the first newsletter from our ‘new’ school.

Pupils and staff have settled in very well indeed to our fantastic surroundings and the term has flown in! Sixth year pupils managed a brief return to their favoured social space on the Balcony before we completed a diet of SQA examinations in the new Gymnasium. Junior pupils have certainly enjoyed the good weather , the much improved school grounds including some benches kindly donated by the Parents and Friends Association. The old games hall and dining room have now been demolished and the last of our temporary accommodation left for pastures new last week.

Work is continuing to lay both the artificial and grass pitches and we look forward to accessing these during next session.

In the meantime Maryfield and the David Keswick Centre continue to serve us well.

We have just finished a hugely successful run of our school show Our House SJC—The Madness Musical. Some thought it was madness to even think of putting on a school show within a couple of months of being in completely new facilities, but once again the Directors , Cast and Crew pulled it off. A huge well done to all involved. This ‘House of Fun’ was certainly rocking!

And finally … At the end of session we say a very fond farewell to Mrs Ferguson, Mr Jones, Mr McGivern and Mr Ferguson who are retiring after many, many years of excellent service to the school in their different roles. We thank them for all that they have done for the school community and wish them good health and good luck in all that they may do in the next stage of their lives. May God go with them.

At 7 a.m. on Friday 8th June, an excited group of Fourth Year pupils set out from St. Joseph's College on the History Department's annual World War One Battlefields Tour. There was a series of "firsts" on the trip: the first stay at Ypres Lodge, our hotel in Belgium, Mr. Ferguson's first Belgium trip, and the first time abroad for some of our pupils. There was also one "last". It would be Mr. Jones's last trip as group leader - Mr. Jones is retiring. He has taught at St. Joseph's for over 32 years, and for 29 of them has been running the Belgian trip. They have been adventures filled with poignant moments, positive interactions between pupils and staff, lots of commitment, and barrels of fun. 2018 was no different.

The Ypres Lodge did not disappoint. The food, accommodation (TV’s and hairdryers in every room!) and service were first class. In addition the great Games area which included Table Tennis, Pool and Table Football was fully utilised by the group. There was also a Punch Ball which was popular with the boys. To top it all the weather was great – blue skies and sunshine every day. It was as well we had plenty of water and sun cream.

The students participated well in the educational visits. Given we had only recently started our WW1 unit they hit the ground running. Over three days we made visits to 13 places associated with the First World War, including battlefields, cemeteries, trenches, museums and memorials. Visits were also made to memorials where relatives of pupils who had lost their lives in World War One were remembered. There were a number of top moments on the trip for example Anthony Lavell playing the Last Post on his trumpet at Newfoundland Park and the Menin Gate. His playing at our own service at the Menin Gate was particularly moving. The highlight was probably our involvement in the official Last Post ceremony. Daniel Capstick and Niamh Green were chosen to lay the school’s Poppy wreath at the Menin Gate as part of the official Last Post ceremony. It was very moving as they processed at a respectful and dignified pace in front of a packed audience to lay the St. Joseph’s wreath within the Arch in memory of all the soldiers who had made the supreme sacrifice. We were all so proud of them.

Along the way we remembered a number of ex St. Joseph’s boys who gave their lives for their country during World War One. The one which made the biggest impression was John Segar of the First Border Regiment who is buried in the Canadian Cemetery Number 2 at Vimy Ridge. The College Song was sung over his grave as the culmination of our service for him. Pupils left their poppies at his grave, the blaze of red clearly marking his resting place.

To balance the hard work put in on visits and workbooks, staff and pupils had a lot of fun. This took many forms: ten pin bowling, swimming, indoor football, badminton, and a “Great Egg Challenge”. A special mention here for Reece "Strike" Nicoll who top scored with 139 over the ten frames. Mr. Ferguson upheld staff honour in second place with a creditable 109. When asked what they enjoyed about the trip, pupils always mention the Bus. It is the fun they have with their friends and the music.

From Adele to the Venga Boys and Clean Bandit and Queen, it all went down well.

Throughout the trip, the behaviour of our pupils was outstanding. Their attitude, behaviour, willingness to learn and capacity for fun was infectious, and everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable time. On more than one occasion, members of the public approached staff to congratulate pupils on their exemplary behaviour. Pupils proved themselves to be fantastic ambassadors for St Joseph’s College and a mature and personable group of young people. Staff did well too. Special thanks to Mr. Jones, Ms. Brown, Ms. Harvie, and Mr. Ferguson for their contribution in making the trip such a success and also to the Holywood Trust for their generous funding which enabled some of the activities and visits to take place.

Leavers’ Ceremony 2018 S6 pupils and their parents were welcomed to the school Assembly Hall for the Leavers’ Ceremony 2018. Mrs. Jones shared some memories of their time at St. Joseph’s before going on to note that really they had experienced three schools, St. Joseph’s before refurbishment, life in the decant village and them finally moving back into the new school where they finally claimed the S6 social space on the balcony for a few weeks prior to their final day. They say ‘parting is such sweet sorrow’ and it certainly was with a fantastic cake baked by our very own Home Economics staff. The ceremony closed with a trip down memory lane sharing memorable photos of their years in St. Joseph’s College and even a short video of their very first day in first year.

We wish all of the pupils the very best as they move on to pastures new and we are confident that they are well equipped for the challenges ahead.

Message from the Chaplain The school holidays are almost upon us. Whether we are going away or staying at home our hope is for good weather. We hope that we get to August and can say “That was a great summer we had”; “Remember 2018 that was a great summer”. But we have had a great summer already. The whole of May and almost all of June have been terrific. The one bad day, ironically, was the day we needed it to be good for the Mass in Falkirk celebrating 100 years of Catholic Education which had to be cancelled at short notice. This is the story of the Old Testament. God is great to his people, except when thing don’t go the way they want, then He is forgotten and abandoned. Christ comes to tell us God is in all things, look for him, find him and respond in love. So have a great summer break, well deserved after a long and tiring school year which all the work that involves. It will be great irrespective of the weather.

On the 2nd of June, I entered the Scottish Young Magician of the year competition. As I had never entered a competition before I had no idea what to expect. When I arrived I realised that I was competing against some formidable opponents, with young talent from all over Scotland. After all the acts had performed, the judges announced …

“Brandon Barrett is 2018 Young Scottish Magician of the Year”.

I discovered magic four years ago after being given a magic kit as a Christmas gift. I had no idea this would be the start of something that now takes up every hour of my spare time as I try to find the balance between school studies and practising magic.

In the last year I have decided to try and push myself and become a better performer this meant I would: debut my solo show at GICF (Glasgow International Comedy festival) in which I was asked to perform three shows over two days, as well as more local events which were well supported including the Big Burns Supper.

What’s next? I am very excited to say I will be performing a two week run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, of my show “Brain Access” this includes my unique style of witty comedy, amazing magic and fun filled audience participation.

Exam Results Help 2018 Support and advice for pupils SQA exam results will be issued to Scotland’s learners on Tuesday 7 August, by text message and through the post. It can be a stressful time for young people – but support will be available, online, through our Helpline, via social media and face to face for learners needing to discuss their options.

Skills Development Scotland (SDS) offer free, impartial advice and information for those receiving their exam results to help them decide what to do next. A leaflet detailing the help available from SDS is included with the SQA results letter.

Skills Development Scotland have a variety of options to support learners from 7 August onwards.

S2 Masterchef 2018 - This year's Masterchef was a great success. S2 pupils competed against their classmates to gain a place in the final “cook off”. Competitors were asked to produce a two course meal. The final dishes were of such a high standard the judges, Mr Jones, Miss Wilson and Mrs Jones had a very difficult time choosing the winning menu. They were very impressed with the variety of dishes and the way each competitor had executed the presentation of their dishes. A big thank you to them for judging the whole event.

This year St Joseph’s College entered 2 groups for the Young Enterprise Company Programme competition. Both groups identified quite different products – Tartan Tio designed a card game about Dumfries and Galloway and Zenith created Tote Bags out of redundant denim items.

The companies operated very differently and everyone had a special experience. They would tell you they had highs – the excitement of selling out of their product at St Joseph’s Christmas Market and how some of the team had to turn a classroom each into a production line to try to keep pace with demand – to name but one. Of course, they also had some lows – every project goes through a tough period where it would be so easy to give up. The team members had to overcome internal conflict as well as handle external challenges such as prelims, coursework and bad weather.

They had to learn about product design and creation, the importance of communication with customers and suppliers, how to market their product to the general public as well as other retail outlets, teamwork and finance.

All of this culminated in long but rewarding day at Easterbrook Hall where all the groups across Dumfries and Galloway came together to promote their business and their product. The competition included reporting on their year’s experience; a robust interview from the YE Board and a display stand and a presentation. Only 8 groups survived the course – a good number folded before reaching this stage.

We are proud to tell you that both STJC teams of young entrepreneurs participated fully in the final stage. Sadly Tartan Tio didn’t win any particular awards but they did enjoy the event. Zenith won first for their Quality Report and 3 rd for their interview and their display. Zenith were also third overall. Needless to say they were ecstatic.

All of them agreed they had learnt a lot from the experience and they had enjoyed the journey. Who knows we may yet see them on Dragon’s Den or The Apprentice …… Wherever they go, we wish them a great future.

Our 10 new Marist Leaders have just had their first training session with Alistair Callaghan from the Kinharvie Institute and Aisling Demaison from the Marist organisation. The pupils enjoyed a morning of various activities and had an informative and fun introduction to leadership skills and Marist values. Although we are no longer run by the Marist order, we are keen to keep connections with all the Marists and the Leadership programme is one such way.

The group have now been tasked with finding a project they can start in school which is linked to the Marist values and will benefit the school and community in some way. The group have also had in invitation to join with other schools with Marist links from around Europe at L'Hermitage, near Lyon in France in early October. Watch this space!

Mentors In Violence Protection Senior students have this week been trained at Mentors in Violence Prevention at Dumfries and Galloway College. They joined senior pupils from schools across the region. They completed an intense training day on Types of Violence, Bystander Approach and Child Protection.

For the past four years St Joseph’s College has been involved in a new initiative called Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP). This programme, currently being endorsed by the Scottish Government and Education Scotland, is designed to help young adults improve their leadership skills and recognise signs of negative behaviour and how to deal with them in a positive and effective manner. The newly trained mentors will be delivering materials to our junior cohort in the new term during Social Education that is designed to improve attitudes and strengthen the ethos of the school.

MVP has given me an insight in to those who are more vulnerable in the school and how we can protect and help them.

ST JOSEPH'S COLLEGE Equestrian Club are the 2018 Dumfries & Galloway Inter-Schools Overall Show Jumping School Champions, with total of 28 points obtained over a day of competition held at BEIRC near Castle Douglas on Sunday 20th May 2018.

Pupils entered as a Team of 4, (Rachel Howat S2, Elizabeth Wardhaugh S2, Skye Marshall S3, Charlotte Macgregor S3) taking 1st prize in the Combination height class and 1st prize in the 80cm height class. They then entered individually to obtain prize placings for Rachel 2nd, Skye 3rd, Elizabeth 4th in a very large 70cm Individual class.

Charlotte also went on to a very respectable 3rd in a ‘nail biting’ jump off against the clock in the 90cm class.

Exceptional performances from all the girls with maximum scores and personal bests achieved on the day. The girls turned themselves and their ponies out beautifully and they all showed amazing competitive spirit throughout the day. A brief photo shoot on a lovely sunny morning on return to school allowed the girls to reflect on their achievements.

Philippa Archibald Philippa competes on a national level with British Showjumping and has done since the age of 8. She has represented Scotland at team level on a number of occasions and has enjoyed various wins and successes over the years. Much of her spare time is taken up competing up and down the country, recently she has competed at Pony of the Year Show, The Royal Highland Show and Bolesworth International Horse Show. Over the summer she will contest for a coveted qualifying place at the Horse of the Year Show. Currently Philippa competes two ponies her 138cm gelding Stoney Burke and 148cm coloured mare The Third Pearl.

Brodie Thomson (S2) was understandably proud to receive the news that her design for an interactive braille keyboard had been successful in the Scottish Engineering Award Competition. Brodie was presented with the Chief Executive Officer’s Special Award at a prestigious award ceremony held in the Barony Hall, Glasgow. Brodie was one of only two pupils to receive this special award, from over 15000 entries across Scotland.

In response to the question, “If you were an engineer in Scotland today, what would you do?” a group of pupils designed their creative solution to an engineering problem. Each was required to interview an engineering professional and write a pitch letter, explaining why their design should be built.

In addition to Brodie, six other St. Joseph’s College entries were shortlisted to be put on display at the Barony Hall for public viewing in June. Alexandra Chatzianastasiadi (life-saving car key); , Cait Notman (hi-tech school backpack), Georgia Collins (early-bird alarm bed) , Mary Griffin (”Magic Mirror” virtual wardrobe), Finn Brown (flood preventing hydroelectric power scheme for the River Nith) and Thomas Holmes ( self-charging phone case).

We are very grateful to Mr. J. Dillett from IBM and Mr. Ross Gibson from Dumfries & Galloway Council for agreeing to be interviewed by our pupils and providing some inspiration. An important part of the Engineering Challenge is providing pupils with opportunities to engage with engineers. They can find out about the variety of careers in this sector, the importance of STEM subjects and the significance of engineering in everyday life.

On the 7th of June, Higher and Advanced Higher Chemistry students travelled to Strathclyde University to experience life in a real chemistry lab. The Higher pupils took part in the “Fun Lab.” workshop which involved making slime and stalagmites. This was thoroughly enjoyed by all as the experiments were both engaging and exciting. The professional lab environment was a first experience for many and incentive to continue the study of Chemistry. Throughout the workshop, the Higher pupils built confidence in their practical ability as they carried out much of the experimental work independently.

The Advanced Higher pupils (including four networking pupils from Dumfries Academy and Dumfries High School) also had a fantastic day despite having to apply a greater knowledge of Chemistry to their lab work. We were given an unknown substance which we had to identify through various chemical tests. We were accompanied in our detective work by post graduate Strathclyde University students who provided both help when required and an invaluable insight into life as a student at the university. This was greatly appreciated by all the St. Joseph’s pupils as they were able to freely ask questions and learn from the experiences of the students first hand.

We are very grateful to Dr. Alan Kennedy and his team at Strathclyde for making our trip so educational and enjoyable.

Following a morning in the chemistry labs, we savoured the sunshine while picnicking at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

Exploring the numerous exhibits and artwork was a lovely end to the day out. It was fantastic learning experience for all of us and provided an extremely worthwhile introduction to studying Chemistry beyond school.

Senior Biology classes were given the opportunity to compete in the International Biology Olympiad. This involved students completing two online test papers which look at different areas of biology. Three senior students were certificated. Erin O’Neill achieved bronze and Hannah Mortlock and Zoe Graham were highly commended.

The girls said this was a rewarding and enjoyable experience. None of them were expecting anything as the test papers were very challenging but they are delighted with their achievements.

S3 pupils were offered the opportunity to participate in the Royal Society of Biology’s Biology Challenge. This international competition is designed to stimulate students’ curiosity for the natural world and encourages them to take an interest in biology outside of school. Five of our S3 students were certificated for their efforts. Alasdair Little was our first ever student to achieve Gold in the competition and Olivia Varcoe, Mia Rinaldi, Niamh Green and Rowan McMaster were awarded Bronze.

Before the start of the exam diet Rural Skills pupils spent the day at Dalswinton Estate with Nith Catchment Fisheries. They carried out various activities to round off their volunteering work with the charitable organisation.

Firstly they carried out water sampling through electrofishing and kick sampling. This enabled pupils to check that the water was suitable for releasing the salmon fry we had hatched in the classroom. Pupils were delighted to see the release of more than 200 young salmon into the river. The group were then given a demonstration of how to gut a fish and were able to prepare fresh trout to cook on the BBQ for their lunch.

Finally they were given a lesson on the techniques of Fly Fishing from the Dumfries and Galloway Angling Association and allowed to practise their skills on the Drum Loch at the Dalswinton Estate. We had one catch of the day - Jack Brown caught his first fish and was able to take it home to have for his dinner! The group may have only caught the one fish between them but this was the only one caught at the Loch that day. This was particularly significant as a competition involving a dozen professional and experienced anglers was taking place alongside the St. Joseph’s College visit. Well done Jack!

Salters Festival of Chemistry The annual Salters' Festivals of Chemistry promote an appreciation of chemistry and related sciences amongst young learners. This year we were invited to send an S1 team to participate in a series of chemistry challenges run by university staff and students of Glasgow University.

S1 pupils who volunteered for the trial activity in school were selected for the event based on their ability to work well as a team in addition to their chemistry abilities. Rowan Patterson, Keir Patterson, Alyx Campbell and Alfie Buchanan were successful in becoming part of the St. Joseph's College team and were accompanied to the festival by Miss Powrie. The pupils worked together in a very mature manner and university staff were impressed by their problem solving skills.

We are delighted that the following pupils have gained places on Headstart Courses during summer 2018. These offer senior pupils a chance to spend 3-4 days at a university, living in student accommodation and studying a science or engineering discipline of their choice: Mya Saunders (Sheffield – Environmental Science); Mairi Callaghan (Kent - Chemistry ); Lindsay Crawford (Heriot Watt- Broad Based Engineering ); Hamish Bremner (Glasgow - Engineering ); Anya Watt (Heriot Watt - Science ); Erin O’Neill (Strathclyde – Broad Based Engineering); Joseph Gilligan (York - Computer Science); Ellie Little (Belfast – Chemistry & Chemical Engineering) and Joseph Rafferty-McGlynn.

Applications involve writing a mini personal statement and competition for places is tough, so our pupils have done very well to secure an offer. Pupils who have attended in previous years have found this scheme to be very beneficial to making informed university choices. The experience provides much to talk about in their final UCAS personal statement too. St. Joseph’s College are very grateful to the Holywood Trust for assisting some of our students with finance.

Cait Notman in fifth year has also been successful in her application for an Inspire Engineering Course which runs at Strathclyde during July. We look forward to hearing about this experience at assemblies next term.

S3 Chemistry students Thomas Holmes and Finn Brown were the winning entrants in the St. Joseph’s College Soil Poster Competition. Students were asked to work in teams or individually to produce posters based on the theme of “Why is Soil Important?” Thomas and Finn chose to focus on how soil is affected by society, including soil pollution.

The competition is part of a Broad and General Education project being run by Strathclyde University and the Royal Society of Chemistry and aims to promote science related to the environment. St. Joseph’s pupils are still awaiting the results of elemental analysis that is being carried out at the university on soil from the school grounds.

Our school winners will now be invited to a Grand Environment Event at Strathclyde University in September where a team of judges will select the overall winning poster. They will be treated to a presentation by well-known geologist and science communicator Professor Iain Stewart from the University of Plymouth. Professor Stewart’s work focuses on the close relationship between mankind and the environment – so very relevant to the poster topic produced by our students.

D & G Science Festival Helpers Enjoy Their Day S5 (new S6) St. Joseph’s College pupils were commended recently for assisting with scientific demonstrations and activities at the D & G Science Festival. The Dumfries & Galloway RAiSE Team (Raising Aspirations in Science Education) provided a stand at the annual Science Festival held at the Easterbrook Hall. Senior pupils in the region with an interest in the sciences were asked to volunteer to help. Despite it being exam season, a willing group from St. Joseph’s College took a break from their revision to work in shifts and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

St. Joseph’s College 4-4 Douglas Ewart High School (4-1 to St. Joseph’s on penalties) After a hard-fought semi-final against Dumfries High School, narrowly winning 1-0, St. Joseph’s College senior team were to play Douglas Ewart in the D&G Senior Cup final. Mr Kirk had opted to stick with our 3-5-2 formation and with the help from Mr Brown we were warmed up and ready. The game started fast with Douglas Ewart maintaining most of possession and creating numerous attacks down the left wing with crosses that St. Joseph’s back three dealt with well. However, Douglas Ewart opened the scoring through one of these crosses half way through the first half when the ball ended up in the back of the net after an unlucky own goal by Hamish Bremner. This put them on the front foot.

After the goal, St. Joseph’s started playing as a team more and their goal was not far away. After a missed penalty from Cameron Shaw, we gained a corner. Cammy then redeemed himself, slotting the ball in the net after messy play in the Ewart box.

Half time 1-1.

The second half started with more even play and with chances created by both teams, but it was St. Joseph’s that took the lead through a great 1-on-1 finish by Liam Douglas. However, celebrations were short lived as the opposition were quick to retaliate after Douglas Ewart scored from a corner. With 2/3 of the game still to go, we knew we had to up our game if we were to win.

Douglas Ewart struggled to keep us out of their half and after numerous repeated corners we went back in to the lead when captain Adam Kirk smashed the ball into their net. But, as predicted Douglas Ewart fought back into the game and eventually equalised through great individual skill.

With not much time remaining, penalties were looming. However, as time was running out, the game became dirty and luckily, we gained a free kick in an excellent position. Ryan Muir whipped the ball into the box and it met Liam Douglas’ head to put us 4-3 up. We were practically certain to win. But, with no surprise, the opposition scored yet another simple equaliser. Penalties were a definite.

St. Joseph’s destroyed Douglas Ewart when all penalties were scored by Connor Potts, Ryan Muir, Daniel Irving and a winner through Michael Maggiori. Also, Jonathon Crocker made a fantastic save to put us in the early lead. Thanks to Mr Kirk and Mr Brown for helping us win the game.
