Autumn Newsletter 2021

St. JOSEPH’S COLLEGE

Welcome to the first newsletter of session 2021/2022 and a special warm welcome to all 198 new S1 pupils and their parents and carers. This S1 intake, bringing the roll to 875 is certain the largest in the long history of St. Joseph’s College. They have settled in well, despite still having to cope with ongoing Covid related challenges and I hope they will continue to break records throughout their school careers. Although they will need to go some to beat the schools SQA results of 2021 which reflected the very high level of effort, not only of pupils and staff but also parents who encouraged all the pupils during the many long days of ‘lockdown’. A huge well done is due to all. To cope with the burgeoning roll we have also welcomed a number of new staff: Mr Ghani in Computing, Miss Haley in Chemistry, Mrs Porteous in Home Economics, Miss Simmers in PE, Miss Dodds in English, Mrs Plunkett and Mrs True in Business Education, Mr Scarlett in Chemistry, Mrs Thorburn for Additional Support Needs and last but not least Mr Darren Clark leading the catering team for those all important lunches and Mr Donald Mackay a Facilities Assistant, who does among other things, the all important job of keeping the sanitiser topped up! At the start of term we said a fond farewell to Dining Room stalwarts Julie and Moira who have served the children very well indeed, both here and in the old dining room beside the Chapel. We thank them for their many years of service, not only to the school community but also to the local community. Willingly, they continued to work throughout the pandemic providing food boxes to hundreds of homes every day. We wish them both well in pastures new. Mrs Flint is also heading off soon as she has secured a Principal Teacher post. Our congratulations and very best wishes go with her. As you will see from this newsletter I am delighted that we are now in a position to safely recommence some of the many extra-curricular opportunities offered in St. Joseph College. There has been a very high level of interest and uptake in these activities as there has been in the school for both flu and Covid vaccination. Hopefully this bodes well for the future as we look forward to more ‘normal’ times. After a good term’s work I wish you all a relaxing and enjoyable Autumn break.
