BUILD A STRONG FOUNDATION WITH THE FIVE PILLARS OF FINANCIAL PLANNING

October is Financial Planning Month. Financial planning can be stressful, if you are not properly prepared. These five pillars make it easy to keep track of your finances.

1. Investments – Managing investments goes beyond simply picking a commodity or stock to invest in. It also means locating assets to help reduce your expenses and taxable income to give your overall investment portfolio a chance at growth.

2. Income – In retirement, its important to make sure you know where your avenues of income are and how to best budget them. This could mean reduceing expenses or making provisions for travel plans. Income planning is about looking into your future plans and deciding how to best reward yourself for all the hard work before retirement.

3. Insurance – Insurance planning is often referred to as risk management. It’s about managing who holds the risk, like an insurance company, so it’s easier for you as you age. This can include life insurance, after death expenses, and even home and auto insurance

4. Taxes – Claron Advisor’s Inc defines tax strategy as, “reducing the current year's tax obligation and deferring taxes that must be paid in the future by taking advantage of deductions, writing off expenses, and paying into a tax-deferred savings plan.” Taxes are never fun. When in doubt, call in the professionals.

5. Estate Planning –Estate planning can be a heavy topic but is a very important part of the process. There are several elements to estate planning like, your last will and testament and a power of attorney. Leaving your family, or the estate, without plans after you die can be a detriment to those involved.

It’s always a good idea to ask for help. Reach out to your favorite financial expert for guidance..

SUPER SUPERFOODS TO HELP REGULATE YOUR BLOOD SUGAR

According to the CDC, 29 million Americans have diabetes and 25% of them don’t even know they have it. Save this list of the best sugar regulating foods for your grocery shopping!

1. Greens

Broccoli, kale, and okra are excellent sources of plant chemicals known to have sugar-reducing properties. Research from the National Institutes of Health suggested that glucoraphanin, which is found in broccoli, promotes insulin sensitivity and reduces blood sugar levels in those with type 2 diabetes.

2. Seafood

The Lowcountry is full of delicious seafood, full of valuable sources of nutrients like protein, vitamins, and antioxidants that may help regulate blood sugar levels. Protein helps to slow digestion, prevents blood sugar spikes after a meal, and according to the National Institutes of Health, may help prevent overeating and promote excess body fat loss.

3. Nuts & Grains

Nuts are high in fiber and healthy fats that have also been found to reduce blood sugar levels. Almond butter, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, and oats all have important factors that are known to lower blood sugar. A 2018 study, with 40 participants, found that consuming 2 oz (65 g) of pumpkin seeds reduced post-meal blood sugar by up to 35% compared with a control group.

Want to learn more about diabetes management? Join us for our next Eggs with an Expert on Tuesday, September 19 with Chloe Paddison with SJ/C Diabetes Management.

THE HAUNTED MARSHALL HOUSE

The Marshall House is one of the most haunted buildings in Savannah. During the Civil War, it was occupied by General Sherman and used as a Union hospital. 1864 was an extremely cold year and the ground was frozen. Rather than bury amputated legs and arms, the doctors were forced to bury them under the floorboards. The remains were found when The Marshall House was restored in 1999. The author of Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings, Joel Chandler Harris, visited the Marshall House. Guests today report hearing the sound of a typewriter in the room he once occupied. Another odd occurrence happens in the main floor’s ladies’ restroom. One particular stall constantly locks itself, requiring the staff to come open it.

Visitors say a ghostly woman can sometimes be seen in that rest room. More notably, guests report seeing a Union soldier with just one arm wandering through the lobby, carrying his lost arm, looking for a surgeon. Down in the basement, men are seen carrying stretchers with bodies on them. Sometimes, amputated limbs litter the basement floor.
