SJ/C Earns Magnet Recognition for the Sixth Time

St. Joseph’s/Candler has proven to provide the highest level of nursing care, earning The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition® for the sixth time.

There are only 20 other hospitals in the world who have earned a sixth designation.

Established in 1994, the Magnet® designation is the highest level of recognition that can be accomplished by organized nursing services in the national and international healthcare communities.

“This is an unprecedented achievement by our nursing staff. It reflects perfectly the distinguished level of care that our health system provides,” said Paul P. Hinchey, President & CEO of St. Joseph’s/ Candler. “The Magnet designation affirms that the skills, commitment and compassion of our nurses results in higher outcomes for our patients. To earn a Magnet award for a sixth time, illustrates how, day in and day out, our nurses’ expertise and undaunted dedication, have impacted our community. Of the 5,000 hospitals in the country, only ten percent have Magnet designation, and only three percent of those have achieved this designation six times. That’s a remarkable achievement.”

St. Joseph’s Hospital and Candler Hospital are two of only 14 Magnetdesignated facilities in Georgia and 624 in the world.

"Receiving Magnet designation confirms our nurses are part of an elite group. It means our patients can expect the best outcomes and the safest care. Patients and families can truly rely on us when they come here," stated Sherry Danello, DHA, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at St. Joseph’s/Candler. "This recognition speaks volumes about our

LCRP Receives National Accreditation

The Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion (LCRP) has received accreditation under the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Commission on Cancer (CoC) Accreditation Program.

The ACS CoC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for patients with cancer by setting and raising standards. CoC accreditation is granted to institutions committed to providing high-quality cancer care. To maintain accreditation, cancer programs must undergo a site visit every three years.

As a CoC-accredited institution, the LCRP also becomes an ACS Surgical Quality Partner. Being a Surgical Quality Partner signifies an institution’s dedication to consistently improving procedures and approaches, while maintaining a critical eye on process at every step. The Surgical Quality Partner designation lets patients know that St. Joseph’s/Candler is dedicated to quality and relentless selfimprovement. Patients can trust that the care they receive at Surgical Quality Partner hospitals adheres to the most rigorous standards in surgical quality.

whole organization, as it was only possible through the commitment of all our staff, senior leadership, medical team and Board
A video link with Magnet representatives allowed SJ/C leadership, nurses and staff at both St. Joseph’s Hospital and Candler Hospital, as well as the campuses in Pooler and Bluffton, to hear the announcement together. Cheers erupted as we learned that SJ/C had achieved Magnet designation for the 6th time.
The 6th Magnet application process was spearheaded by, from left to right: Alicia Motley, Director of Professional Practice; Sherry Danello, Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer; and Sara Copeland, Clinical Manager for Specialty Services.

St. Mary’s Community Center Turns 25

Residents of Cuyler-Brownsville enjoyed a neighborhood gathering and cookout at St. Mary’s Community Center last month. The reason? To celebrate the center’s 25th anniversary. It was in the year 2000 when Sister Pat Baber and Sister Donna Marie Coward began walking the neighborhood and speaking directly to residents to discover what their needs were. A quarter of a century later, those initial programs have grown and expanded, and the positive impact the center has had on the community has only gotten stronger.

“It is hard to believe it’s been that long,” said Sister Pat, who has served as the Director of St. Mary’s Community Center since it opened. Throughout that time, the center has focused on really listening to the residents when developing programs.

Resident Carlos McNeely said, “The center motivated me to educate myself. I’ve learned computers and they helped me get my identification when I was a young man. If the center weren’t here, I’d be lost. They have helped me in so many ways, from housing to public benefits, income tax, you name it.”

Sister Pat is proud of how the center’s programs often started to address an immediate need, but then grew into something bigger. The Pre-School program, for example, started when a group of moms learned their toddlers were developmentally delayed and not ready for kindergarten. They turned to the center for help and the successful Pre-School program was born.

“For 25 years, this is how our programs started,” said Sister Pat. “The people said ‘this is what we need’ and together we all made it happen.”

Bargains On Bee

The Angels of Mercy volunteered to help set up the Bargains on Bee Sale for the Salvation Army’s Women’s Auxiliary. The outdoor sales event on Bee Road raises funds for many of the Salvation Army’s community projects. The Women’s Auxiliary is a civic group of more than 100 communityminded women who organize fundraisers to expand both the quality and quantity of services that the Salvation Army can provide in Savannah and the surrounding counties.

Personal Hygiene Drive For Students

Heeding the call for help from the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS), co-workers participated in a collection drive for personal hygiene items for students last month. The drive was initiated in anticipation of the public schools’ summer break. During the regular school year, students in families with financial difficulties are able to receive help with hygiene supplies from school nurses and social workers. But those resources aren’t available during the summer months. Pictured here are Mission Services’ Agnes Cannella and Charlene Moore with the supplies.

Upon receiving the donation, Jessy McMullan, social worker for SCCPSS, said, “Thank you for the generosity of the SJ/C community! It makes such a huge difference in the lives of some of our families. It's the little things that can sometimes make the biggest difference.” rn

We did it! We achieved our 6th Magnet Designation. Thank you not only to every nurse but also to every SJ/C co-worker and physician who helped make this possible. Flip to the front of this issue of Smart Talk to read the whole story.

We already had so much to celebrate this month with both Nurses Week and Hospital Week. This year’s Nurses Week went big—as in the big top! Our carnival theme included Big Top Breakfasts, roaming carnival games and prizes, ice cream rounding and more. I hope everyone enjoyed the festivities. The next week, we got to celebrate with all of our co-workers during National Hospital Week and then the week after that, with SJ/C’s own Co-Worker Appreciation Fests (where I got to be a server and had so much fun).

To top off the month with such a remarkable Magnet achievement was truly a dream come true. Thank you all!

thank you, co-workers!

Summer cookouts came early for our co-workers system-wide, with burgers, dogs, chips, cookies and ice-cold drinks served on both main campuses for both the day and night shifts. There were also mobile picnics for the Pooler and Bluffton Campuses, and to-go boxes ready for our other outlying offices. Meals were served by SJ/C leadership, who could use the chance to say in person, “Thank you for all you do.”

Every co-worker got a specially-designed cookie from Two Smart Cookies as well, adding a sweet end to wonderful week of celebrating our co-workers. You can see all the photos from the Co-Worker Appreciation Fests on The Hub

7 a.m. – 10 a.m.

2 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Why a cup of tea? To honor Catherine McAuley, the founder of the Sisters of Mercy. Her dying wish to her Sisters was to “be sure you have a comfortable cup of tea…and comfort one another.”

Co-workers from various department mentored middle school students at the Junior Achievement Discovery Center on the Armstrong Campus of Georgia Southern University last month. The center hosts programs for about 15,000 middle and high school students in ten districts throughout the region, and it includes an entire section dedicated to career opportunities at SJ/C.
