CREATING HEALTHY JOINTS

Seventy percent of older adults are currently experiencing some sort of joint pain. Life can be tough, and our joints take the brunt of the abuse we throw on our bodies. Give back to your joints with these healthy and helpful habits.

Stay Active

Staying physically active might seem counterintuitive, but, daily exercise helps to straighten joints and takes pressure off of them.

If you are already experiencing joint pain, look for daily physical activities that are low-impact. Some of our favorites are swimming, walking, and biking. Yoga and Tai Chi provide relief to the joints and are considered low impact.

If you’re looking for an easy exercise commitment, look no further than our weekly exercise classes! Join us on Mondays at 9:15 a.m. is our Exercise Class with Jason or Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Sandy.

Foods That Prevent Joint Pain

These popular foods are an easy addition to any diet and are known to be highly efficient in preventing joint pain and inflammation.

• Omega-3 fatty acids or fish oils

• Seeds and nuts like walnuts and almond

• Brassica vegetables like

- Colorful fruits

- Olive oil

- Lentils and beans

- Garlic and root vegetables

- Whole grains

TOP 5 CYBERSECURITY TIPS

Stay Hydrated

When your body becomes dehydrated, it begins to take water from other parts of your body like your kidneys or cartilage. When water is drawn out of your cartilage, it lessens the lubrication, which can lead to joint pain.

Drinking water can also help flush inflammatory toxins out of the body and balance your body’s natural chemicals.

Clean Up Your Diet

Some of our favorite foods are high in inflammatory properties. Some research shows that the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in fruits, veggies, grains and healthy fats, benefits people with osteoarthritis.

Being either overweight or underweight can put more stress on your joints than you realize. Being overweight puts more force on your joints. Reversely, when you are underweight, you lack the muscles to keep your joints stable.

Maintaining a healthy weight can lead to number of health benefits and relieve chronic conditions.

Listen to Your Body

Listen to the natural cues from your body. Muscle soreness after exercise is much different than joint pain after exercise.

Inflammation might be the cause of your after-exercise pain.

Don’t over tax yourself. Incorporate some of these helpful hints to relief your pain and know when to reach out to your doctor.

Staying safe on the internet is a high priority. Use these five important tips to keep yourself safe while using the computer.

1. Never Stay Signed in on a Public Computer

Signing out of your personal accounts is very important when you are using a public computer. When you remain signed in to your account, anyone using the computer after you has access to your account. Make sure to click sign out before closing out of the window you are using.

2. Avoid Scam Emails

Scam emails are emails sent from one person pretending to be another. Sometimes these scam emails will pretend to be someone in your contact list, and other times they will pretend to be a company like Amazon or Walmart. To verify the sender of the email, check the email address, not the name of the sender. If the email address does not match the sender name, then you have a scam email.

3. Be Careful When You Click

Make sure all links sent in emails are legitimate. Do not click a link sent to you from a scam email address. Scammers place computer viruses on those links, and when you click them, it sends the virus to your computer.

4. Keep All Passwords Secure

Keep your passwords in a safe place. Secure passwords have at least one capital letter and a special character. Do not keep your passwords in a spot they can be easily found.

5. Install Anti-virus Software

Anti-virus software helps to protect your computer and your personal data from would be hackers. Make sure to research the best anti-virus software for your needs.

WHY DOES THE FOUNTAIN TURN GREEN?

Savannah is known for our elaborate celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. We have the third largest St. Patrick’s Day Celebration in the United States, being beaten out only by Chicago and New York City. There are plenty of traditions that make our celebration so unique, but none quiet as iconic as the fountain at Forsyth Park turning green.

Since the ‘80s, hundreds of Savannahians have gathered at Forsyth Park to watch the fountain water turn from its every day clear to a shining, festive green.

So how did this tradition come about?

Like all good stories, it begins with a prank. For years, festive locals would spread their holiday cheer by dying the waters green. The City of Savannah decided, if people were doing it anyway, why not make a big deal about it?

Sometimes, a pot of gold can come from the most unlikely of places.
