The national institute on Aging has reported that participating in social leisure activities and meaningful, productive activities such as volunteering may lower the risk of health problems in seniors, including dementia as well as improving longevity. Being a volunteer can help keep the brain and the body active, which contributes to continuing cogitative health, according to numerous studies.

The Basics: What are allergies?

Now that the winter season is wrapping up it means that flowers and trees will start to bloom. However, it’s hard to appreciate the warm weather and nature when your too busy sneezing and rubbing your eyes. It is the perfect time to go outside in Savannah but knowing the basics of allergies can help you manage the symptoms and possibly prevent them from occurring.

1. What is an allergy?

Dr. Lake says allergy testing is generally not needed with mild symptoms that are able to be effectively treated with medications or other modalities. However, if symptoms are severe or affecting the quality of life allergy testing is available.

An allergy is an exaggerated immune response to something that the body has identified as foreign, known as an allergen, explains Dr. Lake.

“We can have allergic reactions to most anything to which the body is exposed or that enters the body, including foods, medications, chemicals and things in the air,” says Dr. Lake. “Some allergies are merely inconvenient while others can be life threatening.”

5. So, how do you treat allergies?

Your primary care physician can help determine what might be triggering your allergies and potentially how to avoid those triggers. If a medication would be helpful, your doctor will discuss those options, which include nasal steroids, nasal and oral antihistamines and leukotriene inhibitors, and which might work best for you.

Typically when we talk about allergies, especially this time of the year, we are referring to Allergic Rhinitis, commonly called hay fever, which is a reaction to respiratory allergens that trigger a response in the nose.

Ways to prevent allergies

Respiratory allergens are categorized in two groups: seasonal and perennial, Dr. Lake explains. Seasonal allergies include pollens of grasses, trees and weeds.

Perennial allergens are present without regard to the season, such as dust mites, animal dander, fungi and mold.

2. What are some common symptoms of allergies?

People with allergies can have different reactions. The common symptoms of allergic rhinitis include: •

Running nose

•

Sneezing

•

Itchy, red, watery eyes

•

Nasal drainage into the throat

•

Cough, especially at night

•

Sore throat, especially in the morning

Check local weather reports for pollen count and when its high stay inside

•

Don’t dry clothes or bedding outside

•

Wear sunglasses outside to protect your eyes

•

Leave windows and doors closed

•

Take a shower and change your clothes after being outside

•

Keep your house dry and ventilated

•

Bathe your pets once a week

•

Wipe down surfaces with a damp clean cloth

•

Avoid having a lot of rugs in your home

•

Treating symptoms

It is all about the pollen count

Some people may also experience fatigue, Dr. Lake adds, because of disrupted sleep due to the above symptoms.

Others may experience ongoing headache to the forehead.

If you are like some Americans, did you know that you could be suffering from allergies all year long?

Different times during the year the pollen count changes from low to medium to high. The reason is that certain pollens overlap and some tend to be intense depending on the time of the year. The south gets pollen more intense because of all agriculture that we have that produces pollen. Below is the break down on different seasons of pollen.

3. Can anyone get allergies?

Anyone at any age can develop an allergy though it’s most common in children and young adults, Dr. Lake says.

“We are not born with an allergy; the allergic response actually requires a prior exposure to the allergen,” says Dr. Lake. “However, some people are more prone to developing allergies than others such as those with family members who have allergies, asthma and/or eczema.”

Tree Pollen Season In the south, tree pollen season is the first type of pollen that occurs yearly. It tends to peak in late March to early April. Then the season starts to slow down and wrap up by late May. Just a few trees that are common to cause this pollen in Georgia are Oak, Walnut, Cottonwood, Juniper and Pecan.

4. How do I know if it’s allergies or a cold?

Distinguishing between allergies and a viral upper respiratory infection is difficult, even for healthcare professionals, Dr. Lake says. Repeated and/or prolonged symptoms, especially in a pattern, suggest allergies as the cause.

Advance Directives and Living Wills Advance directives resolve medical care questions for comatose or dying patients.

The best way to be in control of medical treatment in such a situation is to record your preferences in advance.

What are advance directives?

An advance directive is a document, written in advance of serious illness, stating your choices about medical treatment. It also can specify someone to make choices for you should you become unable to make decisions. Through advance directives, such as living wills and healthcare powers of attorney, you can make legally valid decisions about future medical treatment.

Are advance directives just for senior citizens?

Not exclusively. Federal law allows adults over 18 to make healthcare choices known to others in advance of illness or hospitalization. A severe illness or serious accident can happen at any age. Regardless of age, you are encouraged to consider signing an advance directive.

In order for a hospital, nursing facility, home health agency or hospice program to honor the advance directive, you must provide a copy of it to someone at the hospital, nursing facility, home health agency or hospice program (a physician, nurse, social worker or chaplain).

What is the difference between an advanced directive and DNR/ Allow Natural Death (AND)?

An advance directive is a document, written only by the patient, in advance of serious illness, stating your choices about medical treatment. On the advance directive document, Allowing Natural Death means that a patient does not want any medication, machines, or other medial procedures that may keep a patient alive but will not cure them or give them quality of life. If you have an advance

directive, you can indicate the exact treatment procedures you wish and do not wish. This will not be put in place until you are diagnosed “incurable/ irreversible.” A DNR/AND order is written by the physician and consented for by patient or family. It is put in place at the time of the order written.

Where can I obtain an advance directive form?

You can obtain a living will and healthcare power of attorney forms from the SmartSenior office or your attorney, or from the Medical Association of Georgia, the State Bar Association, or the Georgia Hospital Association. If you plan to sign the documents while receiving treatment with us, you (or your family) are responsible for ensuring witnesses (other than hospital personnel) are present when you sign the documents. Can advance directives be changed?

Yes. These documents can be changed or revoked by you at any time. If you make changes, destroy all previous copies and provide the new version to your family, physician and attorney. If you wish to revoke an advance directive while receiving treatment, notify your primary physician or nurse.

After completing an advance directive, what should I do with it?

Copies of your advance directive should be given to someone who will know if you become seriously ill. You should also give a copy to your physician.

Consider giving a copy to your minister, family members or close friends as well. If you have appointed an agent to make healthcare decisions for you, give a copy to them as well.

When was the first St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Savannah?

On March 17th we’re all Irish. From the fountains to the street, on St. Patrick’s Day, everything in Savannah turns green. When did it all begin?

immigrants in the area. In 1813, members of the Hibernian Society marched privately to the Independent Presbyterian Church for the First St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

James Oglethorpe established the first permanent settlement in 1733. At least nine of the settlers who were granted land were Irish. In the 19th Century, Irishman came for another reason- the potato famine.

The 1845 blight took one-third of Ireland’s potato crop.

Thousands starved to death and thousands more left Ireland to avoid starvation.

In 1824, the first public procession was held. The local Hibernian Society president invited all local Irishmen to meet for mass and public parade through the streets of Savannah. In 1870, the first grand marshal was elected and bands joined the procession for the first time, creating a model of our modern day parade.

Each year, St. Patrick’s Day becomes a more secular event honoring and celebrating Irish heritage and culture. These days Savannah has become known for its celebration. From live music, dancing, drinks and more, downtown is bustling with tourist and locals alike.

The St. Patrick’s Day parade was established as a way for Irish Americans to show their Irish pride. In 1812, the Hibernian Society of Savannah was formed by fortyfour prominent Savannah gentlemen to help needy Irish

Did you know that older adults need about the same amount of sleep as all adults at 7-9 hours each night? However, older people tend to go to bed earlier and wake up earlier than they did when they were younger.

Grass Pollen Season As tree pollen season starts to slow down in May, grass pollen starts to rise. It is a shorter pollen season and normally peaks in June but is more intense. Some common types of grass that cause this in Georgia are Bermuda grass, Johnson grass, Orchard grass, Sweet Vernal grass and Kentucky bluegrass.

There are lots of reasons why older people do not get enough sleep at night. Sometimes it can be from feeling sick, being in pain and some medication can keep you awake no matter how tired you might be. Not getting enough sleep can cause irritability, memory problems, depression and increase risk for falling and accidents.

Ragweed Pollen Along with other types of weeds ragweed, is the most prominent pollen starts in late August and sticks around until the first or second freeze of the year. Overlap does happen between grass pollen season and ragweed season starting, meaning that symptoms are often worse for people who are allergenic in the late summer and early fall. Other types of weed that grow in Georgia that can cause pollen are Pigweed, Goldenrod and Dandelions.

Get a good night’s sleep Being older doesn’t mean you have to be tired all of the time. You can do many things to help you get a good night’s sleep. Here are some ideas!

Year-Round Allergies The most common year round allergies that people suffer from are mold, dust mites and pet dander.

When you combine this with different pollens that occur yearly, you can start to experience worse systems because the allergies start to compound. This especially happens around the spring, summer and early fall because the overlap in the blooming from trees, grasses and weeds.

• Follow a regular sleep schedule. Go to sleep and get up at the same time each day including weekends.

• Try and avoid taking naps during the day and afternoon. By resting during the day, you will be less tired when it is time to go to bed.

• During the evenings, use low lighting to help prepare for bed.

It is important to understand that not everyone who suffers from seasonal allergies will be the same. You might get a sore throat while a friend/family member might suffer from watery eyes. If you suffer allergies to the point of being uncomfortable, you should contact your primary care physician to see what treatments/ testing for allergies are available. If you do not have a primary care physician, call St. Joseph’s/Candler Central Scheduling Office at 912-819-3360 for assistance in finding a local physician.

• Avoid drinking caffeinated drinks before bed like tea, coffee, soda and chocolate.

• Alcohol won’t help you sleep. Even small amounts make it harder to stay asleep.

• Exercise at regular times each day but not within 3 hours of your bed time.

• Keep your bedroom at a comfortable temperature, not too hot or too cold, and as quiet as possible.

Start by shredding junk mail and old papers that carry your social security number (but don’t destroy your Social Security card), birth date, signature, account numbers, passwords or PINs.

Shred deposit slips and ATM and credit card receipts immediately after you get your monthly statements. Shred used airline tickets, preapproved credit card application and expired IDs such as driver’s licenses, medical insurance cards and passports.

Shredding Advice • Hold on to bank statements and canceled checks (or copies) for one year, but keep checks needed for your tax returns such as charitable donations or tax payments for seven years.

• Papers and checks related to a home purchase or sale, or improvements, and contributions made to an IRA should be kept indefinitely.

• Shred paycheck stubs after the income is noted on a W-2 or other tax form (this is one reason why community-shredding events often occur in the spring after tax season).

• Shred monthly retirement and investment account statements after you get the annual statement for the entire year. Keep annual statement indefinitely.

• Keep utility bills for one year if you want to compare that months cost to the previous year.

Otherwise, shred them sooner.
