WHAT IS IRREGULAR SLEEP-WAKE SYNDROME?
According to the National Institute on Aging, older adults should get seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Those who experience irregular sleep-wake syndrome likely sleep for under four hours at a time.
The root cause of irregular sleep-wake syndrome is a near absence of the circadian rhythm, or an internal body clock, responsible for regulating periods of wakefulness and rest. The prevalence of irregular sleep-wake syndrome increases with age. However, age itself isn’t a risk factor.
There’s no “quick and easy” cure, but these therapies and lifestyle changes have been known to help.
• Control your exposure to light. Blue light from the computer and TV should be predominantly in the daytime and limited at night.
• Add more structure to your day. This could include scheduling social outings, exercises, and other activities.
• Make your bedroom as inviting and comfortable as possible.
• Minimize the amount of noise in your bedroom.
The ultimate goal of treatment is to help you sleep longer at night and maximize wakefulness during the day.

HOW DID THEY CELEBRATE THE FIRST INDEPENDENCE DAY?
On July 4, 1776, after making a total of 86 (mostly small) changes to Thomas Jefferson’s draft, Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence. Some impromptu celebrations greeted the declaration’s first public readings on July 8, in front of local militia troops, but the first organized celebration wouldn’t take place until the following year.
“Yesterday the 4th of July, being the anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America, was celebrated in this city with demonstrations of joy and festivity,” reported the Pennsylvania Evening Post on July 5, 1777.
After each ship’s cannon fired a 13gun salute, the festivities continued, including an elegant dinner, a military demonstration and a performance by a Hessian band.
“The evening was closed with the ringing of bells,” the Evening Post reported, “and at night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks (which began and concluded with thirteen rockets) on the Commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated.”

HOW TO KEEP YOUR EYES HEALTHY AS YOU AGE
It is perfectly normal to experience changes to your eyes as you age. Changes to our bodies occur naturally in all stages of our lives.
However, sometimes they can be signs of a more serious problem. For example, your eyes may leak tears. This can happen with light sensitivity, wind, or temperature changes. Sunglasses and eye drops may help.
Sometimes, leaking tears may be a symptom of dry eye or sign of an infection or blocked tear duct. Your eye care professional can treat these problems.
Many people don’t notice any signs or symptoms in the early stages of eye diseases. A dilated eye exam performed by an eye care professional is the only way to find some common eye diseases while they’re easier to treat — and before they cause vision loss.
Here are a few tips and tricks to help your eyes stay healthy as you age:
• Protect your eyes from sunlight by wearing sunglasses that block ultraviolet (UV) radiation and a hat with a wide brim when you are outside.
• Stop smoking.
• Make smart food choices.
• Be physically active and maintain a healthy weight.
• Maintain normal blood pressure.
• Manage diabetes (if you have it).
• If you spend a lot of time at the computer or focused on one thing, take a break every 20 minutes to look about 20 feet away for 20 seconds to prevent eye strain.
Everyone over age 50 should have a dilated eye exam every year or as recommended by your eye care professional, even if you have good vision and don’t wear contacts or glasses. After age 60, you should get a dilated eye exam every year or two. Most people with diabetes or high blood pressure need to get a dilated exam at least once a year.
Eye health can often be overlooked. Early detection of disease can oftentimes lead to successful treatment. Keeping up with your normal doctor routines isn’t just mondaine, it can be lifesaving.
