The technological wizardry that we experience in today’s world can fill us with wonder, and sometimes it can even improve our lives. But when we encounter incredible craftsmanship or the unmistakable work of an artist—in materials like iron and wood—it holds a different kind of magic, with the power to almost transport us to another time. Gilbert Walker is both an artist and a researcher of times past, and when he put those skills together he became something you just don’t see much of anymore—a blacksmith.
Sometimes, of course, what you can’t see—or feel—can be an advantage, and technology can help provide that. For example, pulmonologists and sleep specialists, in partnership with ENT’s, can now offer an option for certain obstructive sleep apnea patients. A small device placed under the skin removes the mask, hose, and the machine typically needed to treat these patients, and they can program it by remote control.
