Message from the

HEAD of SCHOOL Let’s Make a Difference Together! In a world full of chaos and uncertainty, we need to cultivate a culture of philanthropy within our families. Philanthropy is not only about donating large sums of money. It’s about instilling values and making a meaningful difference in our children’s lives. We hope to cultivate a culture of giving within our families and school community. By instilling empathy, compassion, and a sense of responsibility in our children, we empower them to make a difference far beyond our classrooms. As many of you are aware, my sister and I are products of St. John’s School and now serve to impact your children’s lives positively. My father dedicated many years to serving on the board, while my mother served as our room mom for over a decade. They not only gave back both financially and their time in service to the school but also balanced their professional responsibilities and businesses. I learned from their example the importance of giving back to places we are passionate about. St. John’s School tuition covers 100% of operational costs for daily and classroom necessities. Still, for the school’s future development and to support an enriched curriculum, the “Making a Difference” donations will be instrumental. I invite you all to participate in our fundraising activities, and I hope you will join my parents, teachers, staff, and corporations on the wall and invest in the future of SJS. It’s not about how much you give but the intention behind your actions. Whether donating to the Red and Blue Club, Knight’s Table, Headmasters’ Club, St. John’s Society, or the Founders Club, we appreciate all you do to help us. This 2023 Report on Giving celebrates our students, parents, alums, faculty and staff, volunteers, and generous donors who made a difference by giving their time, talents, and treasures. For all of you, I am genuinely grateful. For those of you who continue to donate, I thank you. If you have not done so, we hope you will consider. Now it’s your turn to help us write a story for St. John’s School’s future children and grandchildren. Thank you for your consideration and for making a difference now, tomorrow, and in the years to come. Warm regards,

Michelle Untalan Head of School

Message from the

BOARD CHAIR One of my joys as Bishop-in-Charge of the Episcopal Church in Micronesia is to be Chairman of the Board of Trustees of St. John’s School. As an Episcopal School, our students are invited to be intellectually engaged, to grow spiritually with deep respect of others’ beliefs and traditions, and to be physically healthy and active. St. John’s School seeks the best for our students: mind, soul and body. Let me be clear, St. John’s School was not established in 1962 by my predecessor, Bishop Harry Kennedy, solely as a learning community for Christians (like a parish Church might be) but as an inclusive and diverse learning community devoted to the educational and wholistic formation of children of all faiths and backgrounds. As an Episcopal school, our School is populated by a rich variety of human beings, from diverse religious, cultural, and economic backgrounds. In fact, this intentional pluralism is a hallmark of our mission. It is also a distinguishing characteristic of our School to integrate religious and spiritual formation into the overall life of our learning community. We invite all who attend and work in the School Episcopalians and non-Episcopalians, Christians and non-Christians, people of no faith tradition – both to seek clarity about their own beliefs and religions, and to honor those traditions more fully and faithfully in their own lives. Above all, St. John’s is an Episcopal school that exists not merely to educate, but to demonstrate and proclaim the unique worth and beauty of all human beings as creations of a loving, liberating, and life-giving God. Now, as we reflect upon the challenges that this year has brought, we are reminded of the resilience and strength that binds our community. The effects of Typhoon Mawar have left a profound impact on the island and, most importantly, on the students and families of our School. Many have faced significant disruptions to their lives, homes, and education. In the aftermath of this natural disaster, our School has been working tirelessly to provide support and stability to our students and their families, but we cannot do it alone. I am deeply grateful for the generosity and solidarity you have already shown to help heal our School and community as a whole. As the School’s Bishop and the Chairman of the Board, I am proud of St. John’s School. The faculty, administration and staff are devoted to the students. Ms. Untalan and her team are outstanding. We all owe them a debt of gratitude. I am particularly grateful to the Board of Trustees who voluntarily serve the school setting policy, planning for the future and keeping an overall watchful eye on our School. We can be confident and thankful that a good team is in place caring for St. John’s School. With this “2023 Giving Report,” I must ask for your continued support. As with all private schools, St. John’s School depends on the generosity of alumni, trustees, parents, grandparents, administrators, teachers and friends in the community to make additional gifts each year to the annual Giving Campaign. Your donation, no matter the size, will make a meaningful difference. I hope everyone will be generous in the current school year. My wife and I have made our commitment. Thank you for supporting St. John’s School by giving each year. Yours faithfully,

The Right Reverend Robert L. Fitzpatrick Chairman of the Board of Trustees

60th Anniversary Gala

St. John’s School joyously commemorated its 60th anniversary on October 15, 2022, within the lively atmosphere of the Dale J. Jenkins Gymnasium, all under the captivating theme of “Starry Knights.” The festivities commenced with a spirited performance by the St. John’s Faculty and Alumni Band, who transported everyone back to the 1960s with their musical repertoire. Following this, Ms. Patricia Bennett, the esteemed former Head of School, delivered a warm welcome speech that set the tone for the evening. The night unfolded with a series of live performances featuring the talents of current students, alumni, and proud parents. Moreover, attendees had the thrilling opportunity to vie for coveted raffle prizes and participate in a silent auction where they could bid on student artwork. Over 250 attendees graced the occasion, including esteemed SJS alumni, dedicated parents, the school’s cherished faculty and staff, the board of trustees, and members of the local community, all united in celebrating this remarkable school milestone. Thanks to the generous support of many, St. John’s School successfully raised $30,035.55 during the gala event. These proceeds will go towards providing scholarships to talented Guam students, giving them the opportunity to thrive and shine at St. John’s School.
