ANNUAL REPORT July 1, 2015—June 30, 2016

We Have Hope that Anchors the Soul Firm and Secure --2015-2016 School Theme

We have hope that anchors the soul firm and secure! During the 2015-2016 school year, the school focused on the virtue of hope. The Virtues Project defines hope as a desire for the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ’s promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help and grace of the Holy Spirit. Hope is expressed and nourished in prayer, especially in the Our Father, the summary of everything that hope leads us to desire. As we prayed and sang our theme song throughout the year, we were constantly aware of the many blessings for which we hoped and which we received through God’s mercy, His love, and the love and generosity of our community. We put our trust in God and hoped to become better disciples. As you read through this annual report you will see evidence of this in many areas. Our community celebrated together through the great times — like the Jog-a-Thon and back-to-school picnic, and pulled together during the challenging times— like the gas explosion in the Greenwood neighborhood. We learned together as we developed School-wide Learning Expectations as a community. You supported the early starting time, service projects and fundraisers — all in the hope of providing our children with better learning opportunities. We were blessed to be able to create the position of an additional full time learning specialist – the answer to our prayers to offer student enrichment, differentiated learning, and improve student–teacher ratio. Thank you to each and every one of you for your many prayers, financial and volunteer support, and commitment to the mission of St. John. As you read the report take pride in what we have accomplished together.

Bernadette O’Leary Principal

New Faculty and Staff Abby Mansfield, Grade Three Mrs. Mansfield joined the faculty as our new third grade teacher after having spent several years as a teaching assistant in the primary department. Mrs. Mansfield’s personal experiences shape her views on teaching. "As a child I really struggled in math. The abstract concepts and paper/pencil techniques were not effective for me. As I began teaching, I realized that math could be fun, engaging, and taught in a way that made it accessible to all students. I love watching students engage with math and fall in love with numbers! I love everything about teaching! I love that I spend my nights learning new things and spend my days imparting that knowledge to young, curious minds. Children are adventurous, curious, and innovative and I get to spend my time inspiring, engaging, and shaping their minds everyday. It doesn’t get any better than that! I began my relationship with the St. John family as a parent of a first grader. St. John is a supportive, encouraging and accepting community, committed to serving the needs of a diverse group of learners. When I decided to pursue teaching full time it was with the explicit intention of teaching here at St. John. I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else." Mrs. Mansfield received her BA in Education and Religious Education from Seattle Pacific University and was certified to teach K-8 from the Western Governors University.

Shannon Manley, Third Grade Assistant Mrs. Shannon Manley, a parent of three St. John graduates, joined the intermediate department as a teaching assistant. “I love to teach reading. It's a joy to see students connect to literature and get excited about books. Every single day I am given the opportunity to inspire others, laugh, learn, encourage perseverance, have fun, and lead. Teaching is a venue for me to help each and every child feel successful, smart, worthwhile, proud, and cared for. As a parent of St. John graduates and now a member of the staff, I find that the community of parents, teachers, staff and parish is what truly sets St. John apart.” Mrs. Manley received her BS in Human Services from Western Washington University and her MA in Education in Guidance and Counseling from City University.

Thomas Breysse, Primary Assistant "I became a teacher because I truly enjoy those ‘light-bulb’ moments when a student finally grasps an idea after lots of hard work. I am constantly learning new things from my students and it is always amazing to see what they can accomplish. The community at St. John is strong, unified, and everyone truly looks out for the well-being of others. This attribute is not found in every school and it makes St. John a strong example in the Seattle area." Mr. Breysse received his BA in History at Eastern Washington University.

Accreditation/Self Study St. John faculty spent much of the school year preparing for re-accreditation. This process calls us to examine how we help all students succeed and provides a framework for improving student achievement over the course of the next six years. Faculty, staff, parents, students, and parishioners used a specific protocol outlined by the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA). Part of the protocol included surveying our community. The positive feedback we received from the parent survey was encouraging--particularly in the area of Catholic identity. When asked if St. John School provides an atmosphere in which Christian values and attitudes are emphasized and practiced—over 90% of respondents said the school is highly effective or effective. In the spring of 2017, a visiting committee from WCEA will review our Self Study document, including our Action Plan for ongoing improvement, and will determine our accreditation status for the next six years. The self-study included the development of a new mission statement and articulated school philosophy as well as review and revision of our Schoolwide Learning Expectations (SLEs). SLEs provide the overarching framework “that enfolds an excellent academic education within St. John’s faith-filled environment and they articulate the benchmarks to be reached by our students as they journey through the grade levels.”

Mission

Philosophy St. John School is committed to providing an excellent Catholic School education based on: • The Mission of the Church • Standards based curriculum and instruction • Fostering a life-long love of learning through engaging religious, academic, and co-curricular activities • Practices that promote healthy mind, body, and spirit Keeping the school accessible through: • A welcoming community for all families who value Catholic education • Assistance for families with financial need • Reasonable accommodations for diverse learners • Defined planning for continued school improvement • Our commitment to Fair Share Empowering our children for missionary discipleship by: • Serving the Church, society, and the global community • Partnering with families to promote active involvement in the mission of the school • Participating in the ministries of our parish community • Offering leadership opportunities • Promoting environmental responsibility

Student Enrichment A Longer School Day and A Flipped Lunch Schedule In an effort to add more instructional time during the school day, a new start time of 8:15 was implemented. This extra time allowed for an additional ten teachable minutes and flexible scheduling options. Our decision to flip the lunch schedule also proved beneficial. Research demonstrates the advantages of providing students with a recess followed by lunch and we have witnessed the beneficial results first hand. Students are hungry after exercise and more focused on their afternoon classes. No more rushing through lunch to get outside, and occasional playground conflicts are typically resolved before students return to the classroom.

New Website and Communication Tools In 2015, we revamped the school website to improve communication between parents, students, teachers, and administration. The site is built on a WordPress platform allowing for improved updating and flexibility while providing parents accessibility from any device to important information about events, news, students clubs and more. Another efficiency was obtained through the ability to create custom forms and integrate credit card payments for clubs, events, pizza lunches, etc. No more paper order forms and checks coming into the school office. A major goal was to reduce the number of e-mails going out to parents while improving the content of our website. Instead of relying only on a weekly newsletter, news and updates appear on the home page several times a week. NewsViews is now a weekly aggregate of the most important posts that appear on the home page. Consequently, our Facebook page has become a source for items such as student and alumni news, photos of school happenings and events, neighborhood news, parenting articles, and more. Be sure to check out our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/stjohnschoolsea.

Student Enrichment Mrs. Ocampo’s role as learning specialist expanded to include a new Student Enrichment Program. The addition of enrichment opportunities for our highest achieving students takes place in a weekly multi-age classroom. In grades three through eight, students work cooperatively to solve problems by thinking critically and creatively. Students in Kindergarten through grade two hold a weekly book discussion. “Every child, including students with advanced achievement, need to be taught and challenged at their appropriate level of ability in order to reach their greatest potential! Curricula used to support this program include Odyssey of the Mind and Mensa for Kids.

Achieve 3000 is an innovative online reading program for students who qualify for reading and writing intervention to engage in lessons to gain skills and knowledge about various nonfiction topics. Students are tested at their appropriate level of complexity and are given articles to read and respond to each week. Students choose the topic of interest and complete activities. Mrs. Ocampo received a Fulcrum Foundation STAR Grant as well as private donations to support this dynamic research based reading program. The differentiated instruction program is used in grades three to five as well as middle school students needing reading and writing support.

Service Downtown Emergency Service Center As part of our effort to encourage our students to “serve the Church, society, and the global community,” eighth graders delivered 500 sandwiches to the Downtown Emergency Service Center-our mission in action. Read this grateful message-Thank you, thank you for your wonderful donation. I have to tell you how much your sandwiches were welcomed when I brought them to the shelter today. When we walked in with the sandwiches, a volunteer was just opening the first of a row of biscuit mixes. Our volunteer was working solo and running late with nothing from the freezer to put out. So she was preparing to mix up some biscuits so that the place smelled good and there would be some snacks later. When we walked in, she said, rather weakly "Oh, bread..." I said "No, not just bread, sandwiches.” Her eyes lit up. "Sandwiches! The day is suddenly fun! I will cut them in halves so everyone can have a bite." Then we said, "No, we have 500 sandwiches. Everyone will be able to have as many as they wish, and there will even be enough for a late night snack." Tears filled our volunteer's eyes, and then mine. This simple gesture means so very much to these people. There is enough food that they can eat one or two, and take one and put it in their pocket for later. We serve 2000 each day. Homelessness is such a big problem in Seattle, especially when you think how many agencies in Seattle there are, and how many people still don't have basic services like a safe place to sleep or go to the bathroom. So thank you. Your kind donation has helped some seriously ill, chronically homeless people to take a break from chasing down their next meal. Your actions have an immediate effect on hundreds of people. Donald Rupp Volunteer and In Kind Gifts Manager

Mary’s Place First and eighth grade buddies ventured to Mary’s Place to deliver donations for their Lenten service project. Mary’s Place is a local shelter that works to keep homeless families together and provide resources in one place. Miss Feeney, Mrs. Todd and a handful of students delivered donations and spent an afternoon touring the shelter and playing with the children.

Green for Greenwood Students facilitated a “Green for Greenwood” fundraiser and were able to deliver $2,800 to the Phinney Neighborhood Association to assist neighborhood businesses harmed by the natural gas explosion in March. Thank you to the generosity and care of the St. John Community.

Fundraisers Egan Renovation More than $63K was raised at the 2015 Mad for St. John Auction to give Egan Hall a facelift. The parish contributed another $18 K for a flooring renovation. Improvements made over the summer included landscaping, seating, security fencing, and lighting directly outside Egan Hall; a new floor, new chairs, a new accordion door, and new paint inside Egan Hall. Paint and painting were donated by the Osterfeld family.

Fr. Crispin Celebrates 25 Years and Leaves a Legacy Beginning with Fr. Crispin’s Jubilee Celebration on January 22nd, St. John Parish and School launched a joint fundraising effort to support the renovation of the 52 year-old kitchen in Egan Hall. A complete renovation would provide students, families, and parishioners with a fully functioning, commercial kitchen. This third phase of Egan Hall upgrades will transform our kitchen into a modern food preparation and serving area built to deliver a daily hot lunch program to students. Additionally, Parish and community events would benefit from the ability to cook on-site for pancake breakfasts, soup suppers, fundraising events, weddings, funerals, and more. More than $191,000 * was raised to fund the project slated to be complete by fall 2016: New appliances (refrigeration, grill top, ovens, ice machine, high capacity coffee maker, etc.) Installation of gas service Updated vent hood, including fire suppression Improved storage Warming and cooling units and improved serving line Dedicated hand washing sinks and food preparation area  

* Approximately $44,000 of this was donated after June 30, 2016

Jog-a-thon Once again we had an extremely successful Jog-a-thon. With the support of local sponsors, generous donors and energetic students, we raised over $67,000. Thank you to our Jog-a-Thon team Jen Bergman, Patti Coats, Brandi Dagg and Liz Overland. We enlisted the expertise of an online fundraising management company— 99 Pledges. Going digital allowed us to create a unique donation page, collect online gifts, share our event through e-mail and social media, and accurately track our progress.

Havana Nights 2016 Auction Our 2016 Auction generated more than $300,000. Thank you auction co-chairs Katie Sawicki and Teresa Campbell.

Seattle Foundation’s GiveBIG St. John experienced its best year ever in participating in the Seattle Foundation’s annual GiveBIG. We received more than 60 donations for a total of $30,000. Gifts were made to our annual fund, endowment, and the Egan Hall kitchen remodel. This amount does not include matches from employee corporate giving or the amount we will receive from the GiveBIG stretch pool.

What a wonderful time we had at the Palace Ballroom! We enjoyed amazing food specialties from Tom Douglas catering, caught up with old and new friends, and celebrated 25 Years of Fair Share Tuition. Dan Sherman, former principal, and Fr. Jim Picton, former pastor, were on hand to receive the Eagle Award in recognition of their founding of the Fair Share program. Fair Share continues to be a hallmark of the St. John School mission to be accessible to all parish families wishing a Catholic education. The Eagle Award is given to people who have influenced St. John School in a positive way and recognizes his or her vision, leadership, and extraordinary commitment to St. John School. Patrick D’Amelio did an amazing job serving as our emcee and speaking to the uniqueness of Fair Share. Funds raised from the event totaled over $50K.

2015- 2016 Giving Because privacy is integral to maintaining the spirit of our Fair Share Tuition Program, only those donors who do not have children currently enrolled at St. John School have been acknowledged here. We are grateful for the many ways our families generously contribute their time, talent, and treasure. All donations were received between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016. Included are gifts to the following St. John School funds: Annual Fund, Memorials, Principal’s Fund, Fund-A-Need, Parish School SupportEnvelopes, cash donations to the Auction, and Jog-a-thon donations over $250. Not included in this list are gifts made to the Parish Capital campaign that are earmarked for improvements to the school building or gifts made to the School Endowment. Legacy$10,000 +

Fair Share Update For 25 years, St. John School has proudly offered a unique form of school funding called the Fair Share Tuition Program. Fair Share requires annual discernment and reflection on the part of administration as well as families. Fair Share continues to assure that all St. John parish children have access to a quality Catholic education regardless of their ability to pay the full cost of education. The program is reviewed regularly to maintain fiscal soundness and improve understanding among parents. A series of education nights is presented yearly to impart the principles of Fair Share as well as report current year achievements and goals and projections for the coming year.

2015-2016 St. John School Recommended In-Parish Tuition One Student $6,544

Two Students

Three Students

$11,125

$15,018

Cost to Educate One Student: $8,725

St. John budgeted $8,725 per child as the cost per pupil for 2015-2016. Parish families are asked to pay the recommended in-parish tuition amount. If they have the means, they are encouraged to pay as much toward the actual cost of $8,725 as possible. The difference in the amount pledged and the amount needed to fund the school is made up via fundraising and development efforts. In attempting to fulfill our mission in “to be an inclusive Catholic Community,” the School Commission continues to recommend that St. John provide a limited amount of financial aid to nonparish families. This has proved to be a tremendous value to families who would otherwise not be able to attend St. John School and provide us “the courage to act for the common good.” (St. John School Mission Statement 2015)
