ANNUAL REPORT

July 1, 2014—June 30, 2015

Living our Faith as Children of God Living Our Faith as Children of God challenged our hearts, our minds, and our souls. Our guiding theme for the 2014/2015 school year forced us to look at how Jesus wanted us to live. He challenged the status quo, He asked tough questions, He listened, He asked his followers to open their eyes and see in new ways. Our students don’t just learn about the faith—they live it—day in and day out.

Living Our Faith as Children of God presented great opportunities in our religion classes and in how we treat one another. The students reached out locally and globally with food drives, sandwich making for the homeless, the Rice Bowl, Pink Day for Breast Cancer, and Blue and White day for St. Mary’s school in Aberdeen.

Academically, living our faith means using all our gifts and talents as Jesus taught us to do. It means using resources wisely and growing and preparing students for the high-tech world of the future by offering additional opportunities in science, technology, science and math. Mr. Tice and Mr. James entered the new middle school robotics team in the Robotics Extravaganza, we introduced a new Coding For Kids program, and expanded the popular Lego engineering club. Family Math night grew beyond Egan Hall to the Mezzanine for engineering challenges—including experimenting with a catapult!

At St. John, we teach to all sides of the brain! We had another great year with the arts. Students of Mrs. Desclos’ art classes, parent led art classes, and Ms. Kay’s after-school art program expressed their creativity in a wide variety of media. In music, the students not only learned musicianship, but they had many opportunities to perform. They sang, danced, joined the band, and entertained us so well on many occasions throughout the year. We are so very grateful for the choirs, Schola and Cantionis, for enhancing our liturgies. The middle school musical, Bye Bye Birdie, was another roaring success!

2014-2015 marked the graduation of the largest class to go through St. John! We are very proud of them. The 68 students won many academic merit, leadership, and service awards to the Catholic High Schools! I am so grateful to the entire St. John community. Our students achieve success not only as a result of the fine teaching they receive, but also because of the constant collaboration and partnership with the parents and the example set by our extended community. We live our faith every day! Thank you for your support!

God Bless!

Bernadette O’Leary

Living our Faith Through Service

Owen M., grade 5, and his cousin pedaled across Hood Canal to benefit African water well construction and raised over $4000!

Students in grade eight exceeded their goal of making 3,000 PB&J sandwiches for St. Martin de Porres shelter. As fourth graders, the students committed to "purchasing" the portrait of Adriana by artist Mary Larson. Adriana, a downtown shelter client, reminds us how important it is to care for the less fortunate. The portrait hangs in the west end of the second floor hallway.

Assistant Principal Paul Kelley and Spanish teacher Blanca denAdel spent a week in Peru connecting with new leadership at both San Miguel Parish and La Inmaculada School and Orphanage. The communities in Peru sent their prayers of thanksgiving and appreciation for the many ways St. John parish and school support their ministries and missions.

Faculty and Staff Chrissy Murray/Kindergarten Chrissy Murray, a graduate of Washington State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Fine Arts, joined the primary department to teach Kindergarten. Miss Murray received her Elementary Education Certification from Seattle Pacific University. Miss Murray began teaching in 2008 and had been an assistant teacher in the primary department since 2011. Miss Murray appreciates St. John School for “the amazing support from fellow teachers and parents. It is an incredible community to be a part of and allows me to make a difference in children's lives.”

Telia Oines/Second Grade Telia Oines also joined the primary department to teach second grade. A graduate of Seattle Pacific University with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and Sociology. Mrs. Oines received her Master’s in Literacy for Special Needs from Seattle University. Mrs. Oines especially enjoys “reading aloud to build a love for reading and vocabulary growth, guiding children to choose good-fit books, integrating literacy in math, social studies and science, and finding the perfect book to teach a concept." Mrs. Oines has found St. John to be a “supportive and loving faith community, with dedicated and talented teachers and staff, friendly students, a joyful priest (Fr. Crispin), and strong academics.”

Steve Berlage/Facilities Manager We said goodbye to Steve Berlage after 30 years of service as a dedicated and valuable part of the St. John family. Steve was active in many parish ministries, assisting with Youth Group and leading students on outreach trips to Yakima and Mount Vernon. We thank Steve for his many years of service to St. John Parish and School.

Mrs. Kathy Kelly Loved by generations of students and their families, Mrs. Kelly retired after 24 years at St. John School and 43 years in Catholic education. Mrs. Kelly was known for cultivating a warm and nurturing classroom environment. Several celebrations were held in her honor. Mrs. Kelly will remain in the St. John community serving occasionally as a substitute teacher.

Student News

In June 2015, St. John graduated one of its largest classes ever. Sixty-eight St. John students begin the next chapter of their education at Bishop Blanchet High School, Seattle Preparatory School, Holy Names Academy, Shorecrest, Kings, Seattle Academy of Arts & Sciences, Roosevelt, O'Dea, Lakeside, Ballard, Ingraham, Aviation High and Shorewood! Well over half were accepted into two or more schools, and as a class, they were offered over $200,000 in academic merit, faith, and service awards!

Congratulations to the St. John Middle School Math Team for taking 1st place overall and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the individual competition at Bishop Blanchet High School.

John T., grade five, selected as the elementary school essay winner by Northwest Catholic (Magazine), wrote about how he sees Christ at St. John School: “Christ is everywhere at St. John... Christ is in the teachers. I see Him in Mrs. Ocampo's smile. Christ is also in my friends. I see Him whenever I have a good time with them…Christ is always there for you…Sometimes, when I'm sad at school, I notice Christ and it makes me feel better. When I get hurt at recess, Christ is in the kindness of the people who help me. If I get angry, Christ helps me calm down.” Benjamin B., grade eight, received a first place award in the Expert Class section and was recognized as one of the top 100 chess players in the nation in his age group at the Washington Class Championships chess tournament. Cameron L., grade eight, placed 11th in the world for boys under 14, in the Oireachtas Rince Na Cruinne (World Irish Dance Championships).

Science Technology Engineering & Math—STEM at St. John

As part of their science standards, second grade students plant sweet peas and water garlic to learn about the growth and needs of plants.

St. John formed a Middle School Robotics Team in 2014-15

St. John added several new clubs for all age groups with an emphasis in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math). Coding For Kids encourages students in grades two through five to learn and practice key programming concepts such as variables, functions, and conditionals, by creating games and interactive stories. Lessons included short lectures and lots of practice. Students learned how to debug their code and properly architect their programs. We expanded our engineering club to include LEGO Robotics providing students in grades three through five the opportunity to build and program robots using the new LEGO® Mindstorms EV3 system. Students learned about mechanical and software design, loops, conditional statements, problem solving, and teamwork skills. And, St. John’s newly formed Middle School Robotics Team participated in the Catholic Schools Robotics Extravaganza winning recognition for Most Technical Programming.

Girls in grades 3- 5 participated in the new Girls on the Run club with a curriculum that taught life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons, and running games. The program culminated with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event!

Fundraisers Jog-a-Thon Success

The hugely successful second annual Jog-A-Thon raised over $57,000 and logged a total of 1,012.3 student miles! At the conclusion of the big day, families celebrated with a carnival and food truck roundup. Dinner was available from five different vendors featuring pizza, tacos, and vegetarian options. The Parent Association provided dairy free ice pops from Six Strawberries for dessert. Children enjoyed free carnival games and activities provided by seventh and eighth grade students. Food vendors donated 10% of their sales back to St. John.

Auction — Mad for St. John For the first time ever, St. John School held the auction off campus thanks in part to Fremont Studios for offering the space at a very reduced rate. The new venue allowed us to have greater attendance and surpass the previous year's results! Additionally, we reduced the event to a one night gala and dinner auction. There was some trepidation in making such a big switch, but as a community, we raised more than $325,000 for St. John School and increased attendance by 70 guests.

Fund A Need—Mid-Century Make Over of Egan Hall Our very successful auction once again allowed us to make significant improvements to the school campus over the summer. Egan Hall, built in 1963, received a major facelift including:       

400 new, comfortable stacking chairs Extensive interior paint in the kitchen, hallways, entries, and auditorium New accordion divider to close off the kitchen Removal of old tile flooring New epoxy coating for the floors New acoustic boards to hang artwork and deaden sound New exterior signage

Improvements to the exterior landscape to boost street appeal and enhance lighting will be completed during the 2015-16 school year. Over the years, Egan Hall has served as a gathering place for sporting events, wedding receptions, parish and school socials, and more. Our school lunch room and social hall was long overdue for a makeover. This heavily used space continues to be used daily for lunch, coffee and donuts, meetings, and until this year—for our annual auction. Although Fund-A-Need cannot replace a capital campaign—and that is what we need to truly renovate Egan Hall—these improvements moved us out of the 1960s and into the 21st century. Thank you to St. John Parish for contributing funds to allow for the floor renovation and to Fremont Dock Company and the Osterfeld family for providing labor and paint for the entire project.

Endowment News Hundreds of St. John supporters turned out for the Purple & Gold Dinner to benefit the school endowment in September 2014. The theme, Leave Your Mark, perfectly captured the intent of the event - to leave something for future generations and recognize the impact of Eagle Award recipient Jody Desclos. Honored for her vision, leadership, and extraordinary commitment to the mission of St. John School, Mrs. Desclos is known for weaving contemporary events and popular culture into her lesson plans, as a creative and gifted art teacher, and for her unique gift to recognize the Holy Spirit in each and every student. Mrs. Desclos clearly left her mark on the St. John School community through her skilled and compassionate teaching relationship with students, faculty, and parents. Recent graduates Zane and Marley Suarez emceed the evening, Cantionis children’s choir entertained us, and Kaspars once again provided a fabulous meal. Proceeds allowed us to add $50,000 to our endowment fund of $727,000 bringing us closer to our initial goal of $1 million. Event sponsors included HomeStreet Bank who provided the underwriting for the event space and Fremont Studios and the Osterfeld family who provided the fabulous venue at a significant discount. Additional sponsors included Theo Chocolate, UPark, Ballard Blossom, Ballard Market, Mischief Distillery, and Fremont Brewing Company.

Fair Share Update For 24 years, St. John School has proudly offered a unique form of school funding called the Fair Share Tuition Program. Fair Share requires annual discernment and reflection on the part of administration as well as families. Fair Share continues to assure that all St. John parish children have access to a quality Catholic education regardless of their ability to pay the full cost of education. The program is reviewed regularly to maintain fiscal soundness and improve understanding among parents. A series of education nights is presented yearly to impart the principles of Fair Share as well as report current year achievements and goals and projections for the coming year.

2014-2015 St. John School Recommended In-Parish Tuition One Student $6,357

Two Students

Three Students

$10,807

$14,590

Cost to Educate One Student: $8,475 St. John budgeted $8,475 per child as the cost per pupil for 2014-2015. Parish families are asked to pay the recommended in-parish tuition amount. If they have the means, they are encouraged to pay as much toward the actual cost of $8,475 as possible. The difference in the amount pledged and the amount needed to fund the school is made up via fundraising and development efforts. In attempting to fulfill our mission in “keeping the school accessible” and to be “a welcoming community to children who value a Catholic education, regardless of religious background,” the School Commission continues to recommend that St. John provide a limited amount of financial aid to non-parish families. This has proved to be a tremendous value to families who would otherwise not be able to attend St. John School and afford us “the richness a diverse student and school community brings.” (St. John School Mission Statement 2010)
