Overview

We award a number of scholarships every year* ranging from $4000 to the equivalent of 80% of the annual college fee. Scholarships are awarded to successful applicants on a range of criteria, especially with financial needs and the likely contributions the student can make to the College.

All of our scholarship offerings are split over the two semesters of the year for equal amounts each semester with the understanding that a recipient stays at college for the full academic year. In the event of a student leaving the college mid-year, including for the purpose of an exchange program, St Hilda’s will reserve the right to redirect the remaining scholarship funds to another student

Once your intercollegiate application form has been received, you will be sent an individualised link that allows you to apply for scholarships. If you have any questions, please email the Admissions Team at St Hilda’s College using the admissions@hildas unimelb edu au email address

We have a variety of different scholarship categories. Our two main types are categorised as Needs-Based Access Scholarships and Academic Excellence & Leadership Scholarships. We also have links with several established educational foundations.

We would like to acknowledge and thank all those members of our community who help support our scholarship fund. Their generosity ensures that we are able to provide some level of financial assistance each year to at least 40% of our students so that they can take advantage of the transformative experience that comes with living at a residential college

*Information provided in this booklet is correct at the time of publication. St Hilda’s College reserves the right to make amendments to its scholarship offerings at any point throughout the year as the need arises and at the discretion of the College leadership team.

Needs-Based Access Scholarships

Our Needs-Based Acccess Scholarships are awarded on a range of criteria to students who could otherwise not afford residence at St Hilda’s College.

We have a range of needs-based access scholarships at St Hilda's which cater for both incoming (new) students and current (returning) students.

Many of our scholarships support students across the duration of their time at St Hilda's. Therefore, some scholarships may not be open in every calendar year

Unless otherwise noted, written applications are required for these scholarships with any specific criteria provided during the application process.

If you require financial assistance to come to college but do not qualify for one of the scholarships listed below, you may be eligible for a bursary

The Joyce May Dobbin Memorial Scholarship

St Hilda's College is very excited to announce a new Academic Excellence Scholarship that will be awarded for the first time in 2026.

The Joyce May Dobbyn Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to one returning student at the start of each academic year. This scholarship will provide 80% remission of the annual St Hilda’s College fee in the single academic year in which the recipient receives the award

To be eligible, you MUST be enrolled in a STEM focused degree at The University of Melbourne (Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Biomedicine) and have demonstrated excellent academic achievement. The previous year’s WAM will be the decisive selection criteria and you should also show demonstrated commitment to or potential for leadership and engagement with the College or University community While all STEM areas will be considered, preference will be given to mathematics and the pure sciences.

This scholarship is made possible by the generous donation of John Feddersen and Fiona Hodges. John and Fiona are grandson and daughter of Joyce May Dobbyn who they honour with this award.

Joyce, who passed in 2013 at the age of 90, was a student at The University of Melbourne in the 1940s and held a very strong academic record. She was also a member of Ormond College and was awarded several scholarships. Opportunities for women were very limited in post WW2 Australia which led Joyce to choose marriage and family over a professional or academic career, but her children and grandchildren benefited greatly from the value she placed on academic achievement and the opportunity to contribute to the world of learning

Fiona is an alumnus of St Hilda’s from the late 60’s and enjoyed a successful and impactful career as an engineer. John is an economics and mathematics alumnus of Ormond from the early 2000’s and, after postgraduate studies at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, founded Aurora Energy Research, a hugely successful energy intelligence and analytics leader

John and Fiona are pleased to honour Joyce’s commitment to academic excellence with this scholarship.

Additional Support and Access Opportunities

As part of our commitment to provide a transformational educational experience for students no matter who they are and where they are coming from, we aim to partner each year with a variety of external education and community foundations whose values align with our own.

With previous partnerships allowing for financial support of our students through such group as the William Angliss Charitable Fund, the Collier Foundation and the Myer Foundation, we are always looking for new opportunities to support our students while also linking in with established organisations and networks.

These partnerships, along with our bursary funds mean that even if you are not eligible for one of the existing St Hilda’s College scholarships, we may be able to provide you with financial assistance through one of these additional funds

We also encourage all students to visit The University of Melbourne’s Access Melbourne website to see whether you are eligible for any assistance in relation to both financial aid and/or course admission. You can use the QR code below to visit Access Melbourne.
