That’sawrapon SemesterOne
With winter well and truly upon us and the college grounds very quiet, it’s time to say goodbye to a successful Semester 1.
Since our last newsletter, St Hilda’s has been busy with multiple student and alumni events, preparations for the launch of the history book are getting to the pointy end and, as mentioned on Page 1, we have been humbled by the response of our community to the 2024 Annual Scholarship Appeal
If you didn’t get a chance to read the student stories that formed the basis of this year’s appeal, the page is still available on the website HERE until the end of July.
Please enjoy reading this quarter’s update.

2024's Fresher Dance gets revived at Pride Night

On 11 April 1964, the Prime Minister of the day Robert Menzies opened St Hilda’s with Lady Paton and Principal Marjorie Smart.
60 years on it was Vice Chancellor Duncan Maskell and Principal James Hardiman who commemorated the opening of St Hilda’s and invited Lady Paton’s son Frank Paton to join in planting a Canadian maple tree to mark the occasion.
Guests from across our 60 years joined in the celebration mixing with other alumni and friends as well as current students in Sugden Hall.
You can read Vice-Chancellor Duncan Maskell's speech here.

Further photos from the event are available on flickr here
The Marjorie Smart Oration
On the same day as the commemoration, Ms Katie Foulkes, OLY (1995) spoke about ‘Resilience in the 21st Century’ as the Marjorie Smart Orator.
Katie was the women’s rowing coxswain at the Sydney and Athens Olympic Games, and went on to complete her Masters in Coaching Psychology and now has her own consultancy.

In her speech Katie spoke of how resilience is enhanced when we create ‘resource-full’ environments. Being able to access support from one’s surrounding structure in a time of crisis, leads to resilience. How fortunate we are to have such a resource rich environment at St Hilda’s for our students and community.

TheGoldLeafDinner2024
The Annual Gold Leaf Dinner in May saw around 40 members of the community come together in the JCR for an evening of networking and reminiscing.
Made up of a mix of current and former student leaders, as well as some current staff, everyone enjoyed listening to 2017 GC Vice President, Sarah Fusinato’s musings on what her time at St Hilda’s meant to her. You can read Sarah’s speech HERE.

Current student Comms Intern, Georgie Macho also sat down with 1984 President, Lynn Gillam. You can read Georgie’s story HERE.

2023Chronicle
It is a pleasure to annouce the official publication of the 2023 Chroncile.
This edition of our annual magazine has been unashamedly student-centred with one of our very own students, Abbey Miller taking the leap into publication design and we think her first effort is pretty spectacular! The vast majority of the articles have also been written from students, providing a great insight into what 2023 at St Hilda’s was all about.
We have a small amount of physical copies that can be made available to alumni upon request but in the interest of saving on printing, we encourage as many people as possible to enjoy the 2023 Chronicle via our online publication.
You can find the publication HERE.
A huge thanks to everyone who contributed to the 2023 Chroncile with particular thanks to the 2023 student members of the Community Engagement Team, Abbey Miller (Social Media Coordinator and 2023 Chronicle Designer), Luke Parolin (Student Photographer) and Pema Deane (Comms Intern).
As with our newsletter, The Chronicle is published on the Issuu platform which allows you to increase or decrease the size of the text and pictures as needed.
Just look for the icons at the bottom of the page that allow you to expand to full screen and then the plus and minus icons that will allow you to make things smaller and larger.

AlumniFeature
In May this year, following a trip to the UK which included some exploration of St Hild’s old stomping grounds of Whitby, 1980s alumni Shayne & Robyn Hately caught up with Community Engagement Manager, Carly Damen.
Shayne and Robyn came to St Hilda’s from Stawell in Victoria to study Dentistry and Physiotherapy respectively. Forty something years since their initial arrival, they now support a new crop of Hildarians through the Shayne and Robyn Hateley Scholarship.
They shared with Carly their own memories of what St Hilda’s meant to them while also reflecting on what they believe has changed around the College since their time here.
To read the full article and to also hear about what drives Shayne and Robyn to support the next generation of St Hilda’s students, head over to the News section of our website: HERE
Thanks again to Shayne and Robyn for taking the time to share their memories and their stories with us.

Our thanks to Patricia Armstrong-Grant (1968) for sharing her copies of the 1966 and 1968 Streonashalh magazines, and the first ‘Communitas’ news sheet of 1968, which Patricia co-edited with Heather Jones (1967).
Having completed a cadetship in photo journalism in Shepparton prior to moving to Melbourne to study Commerce, Patricia was one of the few in 1968 with a camera and has some wonderful photographs of St Hilda’s grounds and buildings in the early days.

Affectionally known as “Mol” Anne Molloy was a member of the science group tutored by Dr Pam Todd and Dr Bev Bencina. She was involved with many College activities especially hockey between 1965 and 1967.
After completion of M Sc in biochemistry, Anne taught science in secondary schools before joining the RMIT Food Technology School lecturing in Food Chemistry.
Her friends from various walks of life remember her fondly and miss her cheerful chats and stories about her many travels across Australia and overseas. Our thoughts are with her brothers John and Ric and her extended family.
With thanks to Joy Manners (1966), a fellow Science student with Mol, for providing this advice to St Hilda’s.
