Classics-interactive event with the University of Edinburgh
Dr Donncha O’Rourke is Senior Lecturer in Classics at The University of Edinburgh and joins us on April 29th to lead an interactive talk for students entitled Virgil - The Roman Historian?
Donncha will explore Virgil’s Aeneidwith respect to the telling of Roman history, both implicitly, using a kind of historical analogy, and explicitly, with some passages verging on historiographical epic. Donncha will consider sections of the poem in which Virgil writes in the manner of a Roman historian and will explore what the narration tells us about an author’s — or an emperor’s — historical agenda.

On 24th April, Dr Mark Rimmer, Associate Professor in Media Studies at UEA, will explore End of Audience.
Mark will consider the argument that audience – in terms of a mass of viewers, listeners or readers – needs to be fundamentally rethought, encouraging participants to reflect on their own engagements with media and consider the complexity and multidimensionality of twenty-first-century media audiencehood.

Gap Year and Internships Information Session with GVI
GVI is now hosting free Virtual Open Days every Tuesday. At these events we will be sharing more about our volunteer and internship programs, as well as our new locations. This is the perfect opportunity to ask about our volunteer programs, internships, professional apprenticeships, research fellowships, and more. You’ll also get a glimpse of what life on base is like for our program participants.
Our Open Days are a valuable resource for students passionate about conservation and community development. All are welcome! Plus, GVI now offers grants to cover up to 80% of program fees, made available through the GVI Foundation to qualifying participants. T&Cs apply (request more info here).
Below is an example of a blurb which can be used to communicate this info to your students (e.g., on your student portal):
Here at Africa & Asia Venture (AV) we run gap year and summer volunteering programs in developing communities in Africa and Asia. We have been operating since 1993 and nearly 6,000 young people from 30+ countries have travelled with us.
Participants work principally with young children helping them to read and write English, or do art, dance, drama, music, sport or anything else they want to do, all in rural or semi-rural locations. Most importantly, we specialise in group-based full immersion experiences: participants live with the locals the way the locals live, sometimes in quite basic conditions.
We are looking for exceptional young people who want more than a “gap year jolly” and are prepared to commit to a meaningful experience, really adding value to the community in which they will live and to their CVs. As a consequence, they should be adaptable, committed, prepared to act responsibly, resilient, resourceful and they should have the desire, motivation and aptitude to help those less fortunate – and have a sense of humour! As we do not micro-manage people on our programs, participants are expected to be self-starters who will use their initiative and not sit there waiting for things to happen!
If you are aged between 12 and 14, you may want to consider this summer programme exploring engineering. See details and link below:

My World of Work Live: interactive activities to help bring careers to life
I hope you are having a positive academic year. I am the Founder and Director from London Art Portfolio, Julia Dennis. We have previously worked with students from St George's School to provide support in art and design portfolio building. It's been a pleasure working with them, and we are delighted that they've all progressed onto foundation and degree courses in their chosen specialist fields.
The feedback we've received over the years suggests that students benefit hugely from our courses in building successful portfolios but also meet new creative friends from the UK and other parts of the world - many of whom remain friends after LAP, which gives them a positive experience overall. This is also a great opportunity for international students to enhance their English language skills and their art and design-specific vocabulary, which is essential for university interviews.
At London Art Portfolio, our courses cater to diverse artistic aspirations. Here's a brief overview of what we offer (more can be found on our website: www.londonartportfolio.com ):
Art & Design Tasters: Available online only throughout the summer, autumn, Christmas, and Easter breaks, these 1-week tasters are perfect for students seeking a fun and creative summer delving into the world of art and design. This is also a great opportunity for students to discover their future in the arts and explore potential career paths. Morning and afternoon options are perfect for students on holiday and fit into different time zones.
1-Week Summer Intensive Courses: We offer 3 different 1-Week Summer Intensive Courses; pupils have the freedom to choose which skills week suits them best:
3 or 6-week Summer Intensive Courses: These courses are tailored for pupils or anyone on a gap year keen on maximising their summer and building a successful portfolio for university applications ahead of the academic year or travel and work plans.
Short Courses: Our "pick & mix" structure allows pupils to book 1-week courses throughout the year, providing bite-sized learning opportunities that fit in with their school holidays.
Portfolio Courses: Offering flexibility with durations ranging from 4 to 24 weeks, these courses provide comprehensive support in portfolio development throughout the year and are particularly popular with gapyear students.
Customised Workshops: We are also open to proposals to meet your school's specific needs, whether it is conducting workshops in a particular medium for students or offering extended training sessions for staff to explore different approaches to image-making for branding and marketing.

About the Newman Trust: The Trust provides holidays with one-to-one care for over 140 children aged 4-18 every summer in various locations around the United Kingdom. The holidays are provided at no cost to the children’s families. Due to the high level of skilled care, they require or financial circumstances, the children selected for these breaks would not otherwise receive a holiday. The holidays provide a range of fun activities in a safe and supported environment and use a care ratio of one helper to one child at all times. Each holiday includes at least one fully qualified nurse whose sole task is to take care of the children’s medical needs. The Trust is an entirely voluntary organisation and owes its success to over 200 people who dedicate their free time to helping these children. This voluntary structure ensures that every penny raised goes directly towards a child’s holiday.
About Volunteering: Being a volunteer helper on a Newman Trust holiday is a wonderfully rewarding experience. You will enable deserving children to have a holiday

of a lifetime and contribute to a unique experience for all involved. The holidays are FUN, FULFILLING and strangely ADDICTIVE!
That said, the holidays are tiring and sometimes emotionally demanding. Real commitment is required before the holiday and on the week. All new helpers are required to attend a recruitment session to meet a representative from the holiday so we can complete background checks. On the holiday itself it can be tough work looking after someone with additional needs and you'll need to put every effort into helping your child and working within the group. However, there's a lot of support, it’s great fun, and incredibly rewarding.
No prior training is needed - just a strong will to help others, lots of energy, and a sense of humour. There is also a very supportive and friendly environment with the more experienced helpers actively helping those newer to the role.
