YEARONE
YearOneExcursiontotheOperaHouse
Year 1 went on a very exciting excursion to the Sydney Opera House! We completed a workshop called ‘Stories from the Reef’ We learned all about theimportanceofprotectingourreefsandthesea creatures who live there We explored the biodiversity in the waters of the Sydney Harbour and looked at a model of a reef that was made to restore sea life in the area Our favourite part was pretending to be different sea creatures and dancing around the room! We also enjoyed creating sea creatures and their habitat using recycled materials. The people in the workshop were very funny and we really enjoyed our time there.Itwasagreattrip!

YEARTHREE
TheColourRun
This term we had our first colour run at Rushcutters Bay park. We had a great time at the colour run, where we got paint sprayed on us (but don’t worry, it was cornflower and we couldwashitoffeasily!).Wecouldgoroundthe track as many times as we wanted, and there wasa50metrerace,thewinnersgota20dollar voucher. They also sold sausages, burgers and softdrinks.Itwasagreatcommunityevent.

Stage2Incursion
We had an amazing incursion, where we learnt lots about different materials and their properties We made instant snow with sodium polyacrylate, atypeofplasticsoitwassafe. We also looked at stuff with a microscope. It was really cool. We also sorted different materials into groups. It was a great learning game. During the next activity we looked at memory metal Memory metal is a type of metal which you shape by bending it, then you can put it in hot water and it will turn back to the original shape. We had a competition for a ‘Design and Make’ challenge. We made mini boats out of paddle pop sticks, tin foil and paper plates. My group 'sboatsankbutotherpeople'sboatswere really good. Finally we tested styrofoam to see thepropertiesofstyrofoam.Wetestedboththe new and improved styrofoam and the old styrofoam. The new styrofoam dissolved because it was recyclable, so it's much better fortheenvironment

Amadeus
Followingafternoontea, wewalkuptothehallorLeisuretoplayourmusicalinstruments.Jett and I are both in Brass Ensemble, so we head up to the hall, and string instruments go to Leisure. We start with a warm up and then play songs from our music books. Currently, we are practising the 'Blues' in the band. They are songs from the 16th to 19th centuries when enslaved people used to work in fields. At the end of the lesson, we play games, including passing the beat around the room, soloing and playing the right note. The best part about thelessonisthegames.That'sBrassAmadeusinYear4!

Straightafterlunch, weranintothehalltostartourMaterialsScienceIncursion.Thescientist and all her equipment were waiting for us, and we were ready to have fun. Our first experiment examined a highly absorbent material used in children's nappies. The scientist told us the material can hold ten times as much water as its weight We used a pipette to pour water in increments into a glass beaker to test if she was right. Then, we tested biodegradable and ordinary styrofoam to see which is better for the environment. Biodegradable styrofoam breaks down when it touches water, while ordinary styrofoam takeshundredsofyearstodecompose.Ourfavouriteactivitywaslefttolast.Wegottomake fakesnow!
