O R E G O N

As Oregon's capital city, Salem has a capitol building that is a favorite destination for visitors. Even though it was built in 1938, it has a modern look and feel. It is constructed mainly of Vermont marble, with a cylindrical tower topped by a burly gold-plated pioneer. Large marble sculptures are on each side of the main entrance - Covered Wagons on the west side and Lewis and Clark by Sacajawea on the east side. On the backs of the statues are maps of the route of Lewis and Clark, and the Oregon Trail. Inside the rotunda in the marble halls are paintings, murals and scuptures depicting important events in Oregon's history. There are guided tours for those who wish to learn more about the capitol and Oregon.

Another attraction in the Salem area is the Mission Mill Village. This is a reconstructed woolen mill that has been turned into a living history museum. Tours are led by guides in period costumes. The park, which covers 5 acres, has several historic pioneer houses, a woolen mill built in 1896, a water powered turbine that converts fleece into wool fabric, a machine shop, and the Marion County Museum of History, as well as village shops, and a cafe. Those who wish to take a picnic lunch can enjoy eating on the banks of the mill stream.

Bush Pasture Park in downtown Salem is one of Salem's finest parks. In the park is the Bush House Museum, an Italianate Victorian house completed in 1878. The house contains many original furnishings, Italian marble fireplaces and a beautiful walnut and mahogany staircase. House tours are available. The Bush Barn Art Center is also in the park. The art center has two galleries featuring works of local artists, including paintings, prints, ceramics, woodworks, basketry, jewelry and cards. Don't forget to take a stroll through the Bush Conservatory Greenhouse and rose gardens.

Hiking around and behind the ten waterfalls at Silver Creek Canyon in Silver Falls State Park is a good day trip. The lush greenery and the silvery cateracts of the falls are an incomparable sight, and a good place to picnic on a hot day.

Visit Cooley's Gardens or Schreiner's Iris Gardens to see the spectacular sight of acres and acres of irises blooming in the spring. It's a favorite destination for visitors in May.

The easy pace of the city makes Salem a place to come and relax. The variety of things to do will make it a favorite destination for the whole family.

About Salem

Salem, the capital city of Oregon, is strategically located midway between Portland and Eugene on Interstate 5 (I-5) in the middle of the fertile Willamette Valley, a 100 mile long lowland between the Cascade Mountains and the Lower Coast Range.

Because of its proximity to Portland, its outstanding outdoor recreation, and the addition of high technology industries, Salem is in the midst of sustained, steady growth. Many who live in the Salem area do so because of its family-friendly ambiance and easy commute to the Portland metropolitan area. Salem was selected an All-America City several times by the Citizen's Forum of Self-Government/National Municipal League.

The Willamette River, one of the few that flows from south to north, winds through the Salem area forming the boundary between Marion and Polk counties. With mountains and the majestic Oregon coastline to the west, mountains and lakes to the east, an abundance of rivers surrounding it and the state's largest city an hour to the north, Salem offers something for everyone.

Ongoing preservation of the historic downtown buildings, along with a downtown core master plan for residential and commercial development, ensures managed growth. Salem takes great pride in its citizen involvement. Most redevelopment projects are supported by countless volunteers who cooperate with and complement city staff. Volunteers help create neighborhood parks, promote crime watch programs, staff libraries, and support a variety of other projects.

Salem’s leaders in business and industry are active participants in maintaining the city’s livability and heart by supporting local charitable institutions that serve those in need, and by supporting the city’s non-profit arts, cultural and historic organizations. The business community also takes an active role in local government through task force groups and committees representing all areas of the city to ensure that Salem’s livability factor remains stable in the face of political change.

Historically, the Salem area economy has been based on government employment, agriculture, food processing, wood and paper products and light manufacturing. However, since the 1980's, manufacturing has shown steady growth away from the traditional lumber and wood products toward a more diverse group of industries, including manufactured homes, silicon wafers, metal products, electronic equipment, and tourism.

Spotlight

Salem is home to Willamette University, the first university in the West. Willamette also opened the first law school in the Northwest in 1883.

The Martha Springer Botanical Garden and Rose Garden, located on the University campus, is divided into many smaller gardens. Areas of interest include an herb garden, alpine rock garden, butterfly garden, and gardens dedicated to native environments in Oregon.

Salem Attractions

The Salem area boasts recreational activities and events throughout the entire year. Travel and visitor guides, highlighting all the elements that make this area a unique experience for visitors and residents alike, are available at the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and at Travel Salem's Travel Cafe.

Visit world-famous iris and tulip farms, walk through acres and acres of lush public parks and gardens, and tour award-winning wineries. Discover the Willamette River from the deck of the vintage Willamette Queen sternwheeler. Drive the surrounding countryside to explore the area’s covered bridges and river ferries, historic churches and farms, and the agricultural magnitude of the valley. Experience community theatre in a rustic setting, see world-class entertainment on a gothic stage, or listen to classic Bluegrass along the banks of the Willamette River ...Salem has it all.

Sports enthusiasts and families can enjoy minor-league baseball at the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Stadium (1998 Pacific Northwest Champions) or catch the Cascade Surge Soccer team at McCulloch Stadium in the 24-acre Bush’s Pasture Park. Wallace Sports Complex, which sits along the Willamette River, regularly hosts local, regional and national softball and soccer competitions and other sporting events, bringing in over 3.5 million dollars to the local economy. Bush’s Pasture Park was selected to host the 2001 National Soapbox Derby.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Salem has a everything from golfing to cycling to fishing and boating, as well as an abundance of wildlife viewing. With mountains all around and the ocean only an hour away, snow skiing, hiking, scuba diving, surfing, beach combing and much more can all be done in a day.

The Oregon Garden, a 24-acre world class display garden east of Salem in the Silverton foothills, recently opened to the public and will eventually showcase the region’s entire ornamental and agricultural landscape. Garden workshops and educational events are ongoing and the attraction features a special children’s garden, as well. The facility, which hosts outdoors concerts and offers a pavilion suited to private events such as weddings and receptions, is expected to draw over one million visitors per year.

Located in western Oregon’s coastal foothills, 30 miles west of Salem, Spirit Mountain Casino is the favorite destination for travelers in Oregon. Ranked as the state’s No. 1 tourist attraction, Spirit Mountain draws over 3 million visitors a year, offering the largest selection of games in the region, along with several restaurants and buffet, live entertainment, a well-appointed lodge, meeting/banquet facilities, and activities for children. Getting to the casino is also made easy by a number of complimentary transportation options. The casino is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The casino is owned and operated by the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde.

Nestled in the beautiful forests of the south Salem hills just off I-5, the Enchanted Forest theme park offers fun for all ages. Started in the 1960’s by Roger Tofte, the park is still family-owned and operated. The unique and enchanting park boasts the biggest log ride in the Northwest, live theatre, a water-light show, an English village, a western town, roller coaster, haunted house, storybook lane and hosts nearly 200,000 visitors per season.

Salem's downtown Riverfront Park, with its outdoor amphitheater, is host to a variety of events and is home to Salem’s Riverfront Carousel, with exquisite wooden horses hand-carved and painted by hundreds of community volunteers. Also at Riverfront Park, young and old alike enjoy the hands-on adventures in the sciences, arts and humanities at the A.C. Gilbert Discovery Village - the Pacific Northwest's largest children's museum - named after Salem native, Erector Set inventor and Olympic pole vault gold medalist, Alfred Carlton Gilbert. The Discovery Village features indoor and outdoor interactive displays and exhibits and is home to the nation's first authentic toy museum, The Toy Hall of Fame.

Restaurants

Classic Pacific Northwest cuisine and regional wines are highlighted in many of Salem's fine local restaurants located throughout the city, or visit some of the area's McMenamin's micro-breweries. Ethnic eateries from Mexican to Hungarian, Italian to Indian, and Chinese to good ol’ American "Blue Plate Special" are located throughout the city as well.
