Big city excitement and small town charm make Portland, Oregon, known as "the City of Roses", one of the favorite destinations in the West. Portland is situated approximately 70 miles from the Pacific in a magnificent setting between the sparkling waters of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. Portland's historic old town, galleries and museums, Saturday Market, and theatre companies will keep visitors busy for weeks! Its lush green parks are perfect for a picnic or an afternoon stroll. Also, Portland is just a short distance from Willamette valley wineries, skiing at Timberline Lodge and all of the excitement and beauty of Oregon's spectacular ocean beaches.
Portland's award winning mass transit system is one of the most extensive and advanced in the U.S. The transit system includes buses, streetcars, historic trollies and the MAX, an urban light rail line. It's fun to take a relaxing ride on the MAX train and watch the Portland world slide by.
Portland was built with walking in mind. The short blocks, combined with public art and old fashioned statuary, fountains, bridges and parks offer opportunities for leisure and contemplation for the casual stroller. Walking tours of the downtown area focusing on the best of the city's art, architecture, urban parks and fountains are available. For the more adventuresome walker, Forest Park has over 70 miles of trails.
Nightlife in Portland is excellent and varied. This includes the world class performances of the internationally-known Oregon Symphony. Performing arts in the area offer ballet, Shakespeare, Broadway musicals, modern
dance and much more. Oregon Zoo concerts are a summer treat, with music for all kinds of listeners. See art up close at the First Thursday art gallery walks in Westside Portland or in Northeast Portland galleries during Last Thursday walks. Portland has many local pubs and brewhouses, where tasting local microbrews is considered a fine way to spend an evening. The Rose City is the home of the Trail Blazers basketball team, and also has hockey and baseball for sports fans.
A splendid location, relaxed respectability, and an urban lifestyle that is unsurpassed for its livability makes Portland a city to visit and remember.

PORTLAND ATTRACTIONS
Exploring Portland's top attractions is a favorite way to spend the day. Most of them are easily accessible by using the local bus system (Trimet), or the train/streetcar system (MAX).

Julia Butterflies
Oregon Zoo
The zoo is a favorite spot for visitors and residents alike. The award winning zoo features many exhibits, such as the Great Northwest exhibit, with mountain goats in the Cascade Crest area, Stellar's sea lions, sea otters and ocean fish in the Stellar Cove area, and the Trillium Creek family farm, which includes domestic, pettable animals in a farmyard setting. There are many other exhibits, such as the African Forest, African Savanna, and the Asian elephant area for visitors to enjoy.
A lush garden full of flowers is the setting for the Zoo's Winged Wonder seasonal exhibit. Different species of butterflies flutter throughout the enclosure as people walk through, or sit on benches inside. The exhibit includes a water feature, and educational displays about butterflies. The exhibit is available from late May through August. There is a small additional fee to tour the exhibit, part of which funds the zoo butterfly conservation and education efforts.

Learning in the Turbine Hall
Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI)
OMSI (1945 SE Water Ave.) features interactive learning for kids and adults. With six exhibit halls, the USS Blueback submarine, the OMNIMAX theater a science store and the planetarium, it's a fun way to spend a day (or two). Located on the east side of the Willamette River, it's a good place to visit during Portland's inclement weather. Early education is the focus in the Science Playground and Discovery Lab, created just for the very young scientist. The Turbine Hall includes creative and innovative uses of technology. Try out the Chemistry Lab, launch a water bottle rocket, or see how physics affects your every day world. All this and more will keep your family active and involved with the world of science at OMSI.

Salmon Street Springs
Tom McCall Waterfront Park
Waterfront Park runs approximately 1 1/2 miles along the western edge of the Willamette River in downtown Portland. Joggers, sightseers. walkers, strollers, fisherman, cyclists, unicyclers and families all share the walkways, majestic views of Mt. Hood and the lush green grass of one of Portland's favorite parks. Many events are scheduled here, especially in the spring and summer months, including Rose Festival activities, Waterfront Blues, The Bite, the Brewers Festival and more. The Salmon Street Springs fountain is a favorite place to relax or watch children dance through the changing waters.

Flat Garden
Japanese Garden at Washington Park
The 5 acre Japanese Garden (611 SW Kingston Ave.) has five traditional gardens as well as a ceremonial tea pavilion. Designed in 1963 by Takuma Tono, it is a special place to walk and contemplate the beauty and serenity of the plants, water and stone that are the focal point of the gardens.

Rose Garden in May
International Rose Test Garden
More than 8,000 rose bushes in wide, visitor friendly rows grace the International Rose Test Garden (400 SW Kingston) . Known as the oldest official, continuously-operated, public rose test garden in the United States, the garden allows visitors and residents to experience the beauty of the flowers that gave Portland its nickname - City of Roses.

"Allow Me" at Pioneer Courthouse Square
Pioneer Courthouse Square
Located at SW Broadway and Yamhill in downtown Portland, Pioneer Courthouse Square is a favorite place of Portlanders. Formerly a hotel site, then a parking lot, the square was purchased by the city and redesigned as an urban open space for all to enjoy. In the square, art pieces such as "Allow Me" by J. Seward Johnson, of a man holding an umbrella, and the Weather Machine, which forecasts the weather each noon, add to the whimsical air of Portland's living room.
RECREATION IN PORTLAND
With the wide variety of recreational opportunities available, there's no reason to stay at home in Portland. Visitors and residents can enjoy the extensive park and trail system, bicycling, jogging, boating, skiing, windsurfing, watching professional sports, or just going out and walking the dog for the day.
RECREATION FAVORITES
The Portland Parks and Recreation system has over 700 parks and recreation facilities, with something for everyone to do, see or learn. The City of Portland's Parks and Recreation Bureau offers many types of classes, as well as an outdoor recreation program. For more information about classes or the city park system, visit their website at http://www.portlandonline.com/parks/. The Portland area's regional government, Metro, also manages a system of interconnected natural areas, green spaces, parks, and trails.
Within a day's drive of Portland, there are many favorite outdoor attractions. Skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing are popular at Mt. Hood Meadows and Timberline Lodge. The Oregon Department of Transportation has sixteen Sno-parks in the Mt. Hood area for cross country skiers. Buy your Sno-park permit at local businesses before parking in these winter recreation areas. Some of the best spots for windsurfing are at The Dalles or Hood River, where strong winds whip against the brightly colored sails, pushing boards up and down the river. A trip to the beach is always a good idea, and just drive two hours west to see the sun and sand of the Oregon coast. Three of the most popular northern coastal towns are Cannon Beach, Seaside and Lincoln City.
New to Portland? Get the Lay of the Land

Portland's really easy to navigate. And it's pretty easy on the eyes!
Portland's really easy to navigate because, for the most part, it's laid out on a grid. The Willamette River divides the east and west sides of town, and Burnside Street splits it north and south. The result is that most of Portland lies within four quadrants: Northwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast.
It wouldn't be Portland unless things were weird—more on that later—and that's why North Portland is known as the fifth quadrant, because it's the odd man out in the otherwise straightforward geography. Unlike North Portland, or NoPo as it's affectionately called, East Portland—east of 82nd Avenue—does fit neatly into the quadrant layout. However, it's so large and densely populated that its residents think it should be designated as Stumptown's sixth quadrant. We agree.
Get to Know Portland's Six Quadrants
NW Portland

Jamison Square in the Pearl District.
Chances are, if you're young, don't know anyone, and are new to Portland, NW Portland is the district in which you'll first live because it's made up of model 20-minute neighborhoods that are just a stone's throw from the city center. Its historic walk-ups and high-rise condos make it a favorite of students, young professionals and families, which also make it one of the city's most densely populated districts. It's a popular destination for shopping and dining with historic and trendy neighborhoods like Chinatown and the Pearl District, and also includes Portland's industrial and shipping districts. And, at its most northern point lies one of the county's largest urban parks, Forest Park—a temperate rain forest that's a daytime destination for the city's hikers, bikers and casual strollers.
Northeast
Portland

Community Cycling Center on Alberta Street.
If NW Portland marks where newbies first live, NE Portland is where they move when they grow up and settle down. The northeast is also trending hip—it's become a destination for eating, drinking and window shopping, thanks in large part to the DIYers near the Alberta Arts District and the Boise neighborhood. However, the northeast also boasts the historical Hollywood neighborhood, with its glorious art house, the Hollywood Theatre, and the district is, without a doubt, the city's expo and sporting hub: The Blazers play here and it's also home to the Convention Center where organizations from all over the world come to set up shop, celebrating everything from dogs and beer to Legos and comics.
Southwest Portland

The hills that roll south and west of Portland's city center are populated with countless single family homes, making it a quiet, safe place to raise a family, as well as the campus of Lewis & Clark College. But, at the heart of the southwest is the city center. Man-made and natural amenities include: museums, concert halls, and Portland State University, as well as an incredible variety of places to take in the city's natural splendor at the zoo, Hoyt Arboretum, Washington Park, Japanese Garden, and the worldfamous Rose Test Garden, from where you can take in a sweeping view of the city and, on clear days, spy both Mt. Hood and Mount St. Helens. Downtown Portland is also the seat of local government and civic life, making it the staging ground for numerous annual beer, food and music festivals, charity foot races, protests, and parades.
Southeast Portland

City Repair Project in Southeast Portland's Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood.
Because residential and commercial rent is still (at present) fairly reasonable, SE Portland is where dreamers come to incubate and grow their first businesses. Think of it as Portland's entrepreneurial laboratory, increasingly home to first-time chefs with those so-crazy-they-just-might-work ideas. It's also the city’s hippest district—you need look no further than the eclectic boutiques, cafes and eateries lining Belmont Street and Hawthorne Boulevard. And lately, the Division/Clinton district is becoming known as a destination for good food and drinks. Southeast is also home to family neighborhoods too, like Sellwood, which has a small town, city-within-a-city feel, and Reed, which is home to the city's—and state's—most liberal college. And despite its miles of bungalow and two-story homes, the southeast is also a playground for outdoors enthusiasts—you can bike the Springwater Corridor or hike Mt. Tabor, the city's dormant volcano, and, if you're brave enough, descend it in your own homemade race car during the city's annual Adult Soapbox Derby.
Keller Fountain in Downtown Portland.
East Portland

Zenger Farm is located in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood.
East Portland is Portland—more people live here than in any other district. It's also easily Portland's most diverse area. It's home to the historic Gateway Business District, annual street fairs like the Ramona Street Fair in Lents, and the city's largest, LEED-certified aquatic facility, housed inside the East Portland Community Center. There are also wildlife scenes to take in during hikes around the 12-acre Knott Park, Powell Butte Nature Park, and part of the Boring Lava Field. And, the east also boasts the jewel of the city's urban farming community—the city-owned, nonprofit Zenger Farm, which has 10 acres of protected wetlands and another six dedicated to organic farming practices. Think of it as the city's agrarian classroom for budding ecologists, where outdoor lessons focus on eating healthy, locally and sustainably.
North Portland

The iconic Paul Bunyan statue is located in the Kenton neighborhood.
Like East Portland, North Portland often gets left out of the city's traditional four cardinal compass points. But, the many northern neighborhoods are populated by families and small business owners who long ago committed to making Portland their permanent home. And why wouldn't they? NoPo is teeming with man-made wonders, like Kenton's 30-foot tall Paul Bunyan statue and the majestic, gothic, Willamette River-spanning St. Johns Bridge. North Portland also has within its boundaries the Portland International Raceway, the University of Portland, and the Smith and Bybee Wetlands, a large park with a diverse habitat of indigenous flora and fauna. Plus, the Columbia Slough that runs through it is a great spot for a moonlit canoe trip.
