Larkins...it’s an 80s thing

MUSIC FEATURE THE EIGHTIES look and sound has been a big influence on pop synth-heavy indie band Larkins.

Lead singer and guitarist Josh Noble, along with bass player Henry Bench, drummer Joe and guitarist Dom have been recording their debut album with Kanye West’s producer in an ‘exclusive access’ recording studio in Manchester.

Josh tells Susie Daniels what to expect, why Eighties bands had the coolest style and how the guys chill out by flinging plastic discs...

Your music has a very 80s boppy, pop-py sound. What is it about that 80s sound that you wanted to create?

It wasn’t a thing we set out to do. A lot of young bands are terrified of the word ‘pop’.

I’ve listened to Foals and Arctic Monkeys’ gigs and it’s a bit of who can be the loudest on the night.

Once we realised pop is just ‘popular’ music we were noticing it just came up when we were writing.

Our parents’ record collection was Eighties music.

My dad was obsessed with Duran Duran and always played it when he was driving us to school. All I wanted to listen to was Maroon 5.

Later on when I was older I would say to my dad,’ have you heard this B side of a Led Zeppelin song?’ and my dad would say, ‘I told you about that song before’.

When I first listened to his Eighties music I thought it was ‘glittery’. I think it was just maturity that got me into that music.

Growing up in school it was always about finding a new band.

In the Seventies and Eighties a lot of schoolkids would buy vinyl and show it off or even walk around with it in a clear bag to show off in school.

YOUR live album, filmed at Manchester’s Albert Hall, was released in Summer this year – was that always a dream?

It was cool to do the live album. It was the biggest show we’d ever done – to over 2,000 people!

We’d toured a lot over the year so the team felt great about doing it in our home town.

I walked to the venue past the other venues we’d played to 50 people, 200 people and now 2,000 people. It’s nice live and we thought, ‘we’ll show you how good we are live’.

HOW do your former schoolmates or friends react to you?

I think they bring you down a peg or two. I have two younger brothers and they really slay me down pretty fast with things like, ‘oh are you in a band?’

I’m like, ‘good one’.

A lot of people still say, ‘what are you going to do in a few years?’ as if this

isn’t a long-term thing. In school Dom and I were the two weirdos. We never went out for dinner and were obsessed with music.

In school I’d rig my earphone up my arm and listen to Foals all day every day.

WHAT did you study and where could that have led to if music didn’t take off?

I studied a History degree at the University of Huddersfield. I went to university but I didn’t go, if you know what I mean.

I did the band full time and even did a European tour with the band and while we were in Germany I was doing my dissertation and we had to pull over into a McDonalds off the autobahn so I could get Wi-Fi to send it in.

When I was studying my History degree I was really passionate on political history and did my thesis on blues music history.

DID you study music in school and what effect did that have on you?

Our music teachers totally rescued us. Some of our original school teachers still come to our shows.

Our music teacher found our bass player Henry who was studying two years below us!

Henry then found our drummer Joe. I knew Dom. Dom and I live together. We basically do music full time so you can judge it a bit more if it’s your work.

Some teachers used to say to me ‘You want to be a rock star? You’ll never be that’.

When we do tours now I get contacted by those teachers wanting to get tickets for the gigs and I say ‘No’.

YOUR hairstyles are individually distinct. Is that important to you all?

We’re individual. We’re into modern fashion so base it around that. Henry’s had his dreadlocks off.

All the Eighties bands like Duran Duran in the Rio video wore amazing suits. It was the coolest look.

HOW do you relax if you’re living music 24/7?

Some nights we’re not getting home from a tour until 3am or 4am. It was the dream but after three weeks it can take its toll and you start not performing twenty-five fifteen

fully. We play a lot of tennis and alternate frisbee. It’s like American football. You should look it up, it’s so much fun!

WHAT inspired TV Dream?

I’d been speaking to my grandma loads and my grandfather had just passed away and their relationship was like a Disney dream.

The words in the song...‘nowadays the boys and girls still play the same…I want to take you dancing…’ My grandma’s conversation was a massive element in the song.

A lot of pop music is carried away in dream land. I didn’t want to be super gloom or awful but I wanted the song to be about how I felt about inequality and rape culture.

One guy in the crowd found it really distasteful.

DO you have a chill out regime or relax technique before gigging?

Before going on stage I feel really anxious. All six of us meditate a little and have a head space.

It really helps me switch into Josh in Larkins and then (after the gig) I can switch back to Josh.

YOU filmed Something Beautiful in Porto. What would be your next ideal video location?

I quite fancy Belgium, Budapest, Asia. I’ve never been to any of these places. I went to Lisbon a few times and have been to Berlin a lot so probably Berlin.

I like the people and it’s super super clean. Immersed in history. Even the transport’s amazing and you can go to the east and check out the history there. As a city it’s the coolest place.

What’s your main insight into the record industry that you may have been naïve about before?

There’s a massive difference between potential prospect and excitability. When you first start you’re so desperate.

We played a first headline show and thought, ‘if we don’t get this right it’s over for us’. We sold out in eight months. The other night when our tickets were released for a gig we sold out in one hour.

You need to be around people as passionate as you about your music. You need to be so particular.

I believe I could have got a million offers. I believe in myself. I’m so OCD about stuff. Music is all I think about. I’ve been motivated by the last four years.

In my mind it’s ‘this will happen’ but I’ve had a lot of sleepless nights and sacrifices.

Our manager Mark wasn’t massively into our music but he was like, ‘I have to work with them and they work hard’.

DO you have a go to place to lock yourself in like a cabin or do you need to travel like George Ezra to be inspired?

We spent a lot of time together and needed our own studio. It’s in east Manchester. There’s loads of natural light and it’s a big open space and the only people that visit are people we trust.

YOU have started work on your debut album recording with producers Dan Nigro (Lewis Capaldi) and Andrew Dawson (Kanye West). What’s it going to be like?

Yes, we’ve started writing for it. It’s going to be more conceptual as in Led Zeppelin 1,2,3,4,5. It’s going to be like Radiohead’s idea as if they laid everything out there and said, ‘this is us’.

WHAT’S ON LOVE these guys. Comedy-rap-jazz is the best way to describe Harry & Chris.

They’ve got a brilliantly crafted routine but are known to let the audience shout out a subject and they’ll ad lib a hilarious rap on anything from aliens to pandas and fried chicken.

The boys enjoy an unashamed bromance and happy vibe and are willing to spread love, joy and hilarity to anyone who will listen.

3) It ‘stars’ a couple of guys who used to be in a BBC sketch show called Chewin’ the Fat. 4) It’s pretty popular among all age groups.

Except, it would seem, my flat mate James.

Edinburgh Horror Festival

Edinburgh Rum Festival IS it just me or are festivals taking over the calendar? Music festivals, coffee festivals, book festivals, freshers festivals, comedy festivals and over the last few years gin and craft beers festivals. So I guess, why not rum festivals?

The Rum Festival promises 100 different rums, cocktails, dancing, sampling and no doubt some Caribbean music to get you into the mood to party.

I don’t know who came up with the idea of naming the ‘meet and greets’ Rumuns but it’s inspired. (I’d like to

imagine Rum Nuns walking about pouring beer from flagons while in their full habit gear.)

AAH, I remember my Freshers Rocky Horror Show well. Crimped hair, a dog collar choker and a slutty-looking outfit (my mum would have been so proud).

Rocky Horror is a cult classic at universities and colleges that will no doubt run forever.

There are plenty of people who will happily walk into a tattoo place and get something done there and then.

This is usually either because they are already covered and are just looking for filler material or because they genuinely don’t care about the quality or meaning behind it.

There are also the odd occasions where people will genuinely fall in love with some design in a book or on the wall there and then.

The vast majority of artists can be trusted to do a good job of any little tattoo from their own book.

But if you’re heading for your first tattoo, no matter the size or design, it’s going to be a bigger step and make more of a statement than most other things you will do.

Put in the research to make sure your first experience is a good one.

DO: Get quoted

I don’t mean get quotes tattooed onto your chest. Or face. (Some Post Malone lyrics that you find particularly deep might not age all that well.)

I mean get at least a couple of prices from different places. This could save you a wad of cash.

Of course, don’t compromise on quality just to save a few quid. Most shops and artists are easy to contact directly through Facebook and most are fairly quick to respond.

This makes comparing prices easy and can help make your mind up about who you are going to go for.

Be polite to anyone you do get in contact with and whoever you don’t choose you can simply say you’ve changed your mind.

Unless you’re the haggling type, in which case you might be able to drive the price down. This may not always lead to a positive response.

DO: Get collaborating TO ensure you get a tattoo you absolutely love, you need to be able to communicate the idea in your head to your tattoo artist.

The best way to do this is to send numerous reference pictures for them to work from.

These can be good quality photographs of the thing you want tattooed or of separate el-

ements you want included within the design; pictures of similar tattoos will also be of great help.

Unless you know for sure that you are excellent at drawing and design, then I don’t recommend designing your own tattoo no matter how simple.

When your artist shows you what they’ve come up with when

you arrive, don’t be afraid to ask for some changes.

An overhaul of the design isn’t really possible without having to reschedule the appointment which just reiterates the importance of communicating your idea effectively through description and reference images.

FEATURE DO: Get stylish OF course the actual design is what will become most important but take a look at different styles of tattoos: Old school, traditional, nautical, Japanese, minimalist, watercolour, and dotwork amongst others.

There is a huge number of styles that are worth checking out and this can help you tie in any other tattoos you may decide to get later.

That’s not to say if your tattoo falls into one style then you need to stick with that style forevermore.

When looking at different styles and designs you’ll figure out which ones could possibly complement each other.

And that’s not all you’ll learn.

Finding out about the origins and evolution of styles can turn out to be pretty interesting.

Stick-and-poke dotwork for example is a traditional tattooing method particularly popular in south pacific islands. And also prison.

You might stumble across a style you like so much that you rethink how you want your new piece to look.

DON’T: Get drunk Alcohol can compromise your judgment when it comes to a lot of things. For example, everything.

And that includes tattoos. If you’re drunk and you book an appointment you will probably end up backtracking and cancelling anyway.

If you’re drunk when you actually get a tattoo then there is a good chance you’ll regret it, and this mistake is slightly harder to backtrack on.

sion making that makes the involvement of alcohol a bad idea.

Alcohol thins out your blood so there is a good chance you will be making your tattoo artist’s job a lot harder and maybe even a little messier.

It can also make the initial healing process a little more difficult.

Basically, if you want to make sure there is no chance of you leaving the place looking like someone from the Saw movies then don’t drink.

FEATURE DO: Get social

IF you’re looking for inspiration, then social media – Instagram in particular – has countless pages and tags dedicated to tattoos.

As well artists’ own pages, there are pages dedicated to specific styles and trends.

It is worthwhile following some local artists. This way you can really see how good their work is and what they specialise in.

Another perk is that every now and then artists will run competitions where you can get discounts just by liking or sharing their posts.

Seeing different artists from around the world can not only be fascinating but can also help you end up with a design that is more eclectic and original than it otherwise would have been.

The key, as with any use of social media, is not to get sucked into it. If you do find inspiration online then have a good, long think about it before you go ahead and get it inked onto yourself permanently.

Try and recognise what are fads and fashions and what are genuinely great pieces of work.

FEATURE DON’T: Get a fad tatt DON’T get something that’s a fad Normally describing something as fashionable is a compliment but not necessarily in the case of tattoos.

Fashions come and go, tattoos are forever.

Some ironic tattoo about how much you love chicken nuggets or avocados might seem cute and quirky just now, but man will that be a regret in no time at all.

Most established styles of tattoos are established because of their timeless qualities.

Having said that, there are some styles that have suffered and are considered by many to be outdated (that’s right, calligraphy and tribal).

Getting something personal along with some timeless embellishments is a good way to stay clear of any fads while still achieving an original design that means something to you.

DON’T: Get a facial tattoo I know this advice is usually given by a disapproving uncle figure who talks about job prospects and things.

But more and more companies and industries are becoming more accepting of tattoos.

One reason it might not be a great idea to get them on your face or hands is that these

We’ve all seen the pictures.

There are some real horrors out there.

Bad portrait tattoos are the most obviously terrible but even simple minimalist tattoos can look pretty horrendous if not done by an experienced hand; uneven lines, asymmetry, faintness and a generally crappy look can all be expected.

And those are just the superficial drawbacks. The worse the tattoo artist the more painful it will be.

Getting a tattoo can be virtually painless if done by a good artist (although positioning and size also have a lot to do with this so if you do feel some pain in the process then don’t worry about it, it’s normal).

Not to mention that you don’t know how good a standard their kit is. Or how clean it is.

There could be some pretty horrendous consequences if you pick up a nasty infection.

Just go with the pros.

Hands in particular can be tricky, and the pieces can end up looking pretty faded pretty quickly; the decrease in popularity of “love” and “hate” tattooed on fingers is testament of this.

THE first episode of Zomboat takes place only two days on from the zombie apocalypse. What is going on with the characters?

Leah: We wake up with riots everywhere but we know it’s not riots. We’re trying to get our heads round everything and we’re running around trying to work out what zombies can do.

Kat’s trying to work out how they are different from zombies she’s read about like zombies in Waking Dead. We don’t know how fast it’s spreading.

There are immediate connotations of blood, action and gore when anything is linked to zombies. Are you a fan of zombie movies and shows?

Leah: I’m a big fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and watched that growing up. I’ve always delved into the supernatural but not necessarily zombies.

WHILE you were filming did you come up with any ideas of a survival plan if there was a zombie apocalypse?

Hamza: I’ve thought about it all the time!

What is great about Zomboat and especially on Netflix is that they seem to be really into the end of the world.

My first plan would be to go to a supermarket and have lots of food. I would get on a boat as I don’t think zombies are good swimmers. It is painfully slow on a boat so they’ll look at you as you go, biting at their mouths.

DO your characters become zombies?

Hamza: There’s a lot of zombies. We’ve all talked about what if one of us is or becomes a zombie. The zombies went through a lot of choreography.

I believe you can dance Bollywood and Bhangra-style. Wouldn’t an all-singing, all-dancing Bollywood Zombie movie be amazing?

Hamza: Yeah, it would! To be fair, my dancing is questionable and I’m tone deaf but never say never. (laughs) Maybe I should take the dancing off my CV. I’ve been to auditions singing Killing Me Softly within a play where there was karaoke happening. I basically learnt the lyrics. I said, ‘Do you actually want me to sing? and they said, ‘Go on’. It was very much the ‘About

zombie apocalpyse is a BLOODY

NIGHTMARE JUST WHEN you thought you were safe on land some silly old zombies terrorise the country.

The obvious choice is to get out of here quick using a…canal boat.

White Gold actress Leah Brotherhead and Hamza Jeetooa (Being Human, Our Girl, Doctor Who) play Kat, a computer game addict and Sunny who together with two others, try to escape a zombie apocalypse by navigating along Birmingham to London’s Grand Union Canal.

Leah and Hamza chat to Susie Daniels about gummy bears, swivel chairs and who they would save in real life…

A Boy ‘moment. I danced Bollywood in college and we used to dress up. It was very tongue-in-cheek. I really don’t think I’m any good.

AFTER that experience, are there any types of auditions you would avoid like the (zombie) plague?

Hamza: I’ve got an issue that I cannot ever be in an audition when I’m on a revolving chair. If the chair starts to swivel I start sweating profusely.

It happened twice in auditions and I started turning in the middle of the scene. I kept thinking, ‘do I keep acting or shuffle my feet so I can get back to the centre?’

SO not so good with swivel chairs.

What about boats? Do all of you swim and did any of you fall in the canal?

Leah: Luckily I didn’t actually get in the canal. It’s not very deep. It’s like up to waist height (laughs) though I’m only 5 feet 1 so it’s probably up to my

shoulders! Hamza had to get in it. We all swim but there were lots of life jackets and we had a full boat team which drove back and forward in between takes and there was a camera boat.

At the back on the canal boat it’s tiny so it has to be filmed from another boat. The first time we went to the back we were like, ‘Oh my god!’

Greg the cameraman had to fit into the tiniest spaces like the scene where both the boys are in the toilet.

DO you get to drive the boat?

Leah: All of us get to drive the boat at some point while acting. I saved us from crashing, at one point. If you watch the scenes you won’t know we’re all sh***ing ourselves hoping we’re not going to crash.

WHAT would your ideal mode of transport to survive a zombie apocalypse?

Hamza: An army tank would be good or a small plane with enough fuel.

A good Land Rover so you could just drive over the zombies.

What is your character Kat like?

Leah: Kat has fully thought out what she would do in a zombie apocalypse.

She plays theses computer games and is fully clued up and her plans go into action.

Perhaps she’s not as good at confronting a zombie and that comes as a surprise to her. Her and Jo share a flat and Jo’s a holiday rep who buggered off to Thailand or wherever and she comes in and out of the flat.

Kat’s social skills are not so good but if you get a subject she’s interested in there’s no holding her back. She’s funny.

WHO would you save if it was a real life zombie apocalypse similar to Zomboat and you could only share the canal boat with three people?

Leah: I’d probably save Cary Grant.

I’d want to save all my family but there’s four of them so Josh Whedon (The Avengers) and Diana Wynne Jones, one of the greatest fantasy writers What’s the goriest scene we see?

Leah: There’s a scene where one of the zombies is eating his own arm.

There’s another where zombies are eating someone who is already dead (laughs).

The dead body’s made out of gelatine so it smells of gummy bears and looks disgusting!

There’s black goo in the zombies’ mouths that dribble down to the floor while they’re snarling and spraying it all over you.

The goo’s mint-flavoured!

BY Episode Six do you think they are the best people you’d like to escape with?

Leah: I think it could be the beginning of something wonderful. Me and Sunny can’t decide whether we like each other or not.

All of the characters have different things they worry about. Kat and Jo wind each other up no end.

IF you could choose four famous people to share the canal boat with in the event of a real zombie apocalypse who would it be?

WIN

Hamza: My friend Tom, a Bear Grylls kind of guy, I would choose The Stig from Top Gear to drive really well and my wife as she’s an actress so counts as famous.

I would want to save Livvie my dog so I’ll have to make her famous and set up her own Facebook page!

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever acted in?

Leah: I guess the weirdest thing I ever starred in was a play I took to the Edinburgh Fringe a couple of years ago.

It was one hour straight. I was on stage doing a jigsaw puzzle the whole time and the other actress Sophie Steer was on a trampoline for the entire hour.

It was about the breakdown of a relationship and all we’re doing is these two tasks. Sophie is definitely doing the harder task.

YOU starred in White Gold with James Buckley from The Inbetweeners. What was that like?

Leah: That was so lovely. Lauren O’Rourke also starred in it and she’s one of my best friends.

I got to make up my own aerobics instructor routine! Myself and Harriet Web (Pure) are doing sexy aerobics.

That was fun. James was great to act with.

YOU studied at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London and then went on to study business. How did that come about?

Hamza: I studied a Masters in Screen Acting in 2009 to 2010. I had a stammer as a kid and when I did drama in year seven at school I wasn’t thinking about my speech and it became a drug to act. I did a GCSE in Drama and studied Performing Arts at A Level. I then did a Business degree at Queen Mary University and an internship at the Department of Trade and Industry.

It was then I was just so bored.

Some of my friends were doing internships or working in the city but I got into acting.

IT looks like you’ve been very busy since you started acting. Have the job offers been consistently there?

Hamza: There’s been a few gaps for about a year or a year and a half. I put my energy into other things producing short films and short corporate films.

When I was between jobs I was an acting coach. I teach at City Academy in London. My course puts what I do into perspective. n Zomboat is coming soon to ITV2.

Is this not the best advice you’ve ever read?

It should obviously be stated that there are some negative points to cheese.

It is high in fat, including saturated fats, which is not good.

There can also be a lot of salt in most types of cheese.

It is also dairy, which, although for some isn’t an issue of any note, can give your stomach a hard time.

Those things aside, it is high in protein and high in deliciousness.

Again, versatility will always score points when it comes to stocking your cupboards and fridge.

There is no suggestion here that this one is anything to do with nutritional value or anything like that.

It’s simply here because you’ll inevitably have a craving every now and then.

There’s nothing sadder than having a craving for chocolate and having to settle for a dry biscuit or, if you’ve gone feral, a handful of cereal.

Big squares of chocolate can be pretty useful compared to bars of chocolate, as you are more likely to give yourself some portion control rather than eating the whole thing. Maybe. Aren’t you? If you do have that sort of discipline then two or three little squares of chocolate is healthier than a caramel and nougat packed bar or a slice of cake. Although there’s nothing wrong with a bit of indulgence now and then.

Egg it up Fairly cheap, incredibly versatile and filling.

Having something in your kitchen that is suitable for breakfast, lunch or dinner is a big help when you’re lacking inspiration.

Eggs are a great way to start the day with a warm, comforting, protein-packed breakfast.

You could also hard boil a batch of them, peel them and leave them in the fridge as a healthy snack or a tasty addition to any salad or sandwich you’re making up to have at home or on the go.

Egg yolks can be added to pasta, bacon, garlic and cheese off the heat to make an easy, authentic Italian carbonara (as opposed to the unhealthier British version loaded with cream).

Egg whites can be whisked up and made into meringue if you fancy your hand at some ambitious baking.

French toast (I refuse to call it eggy bread) is another comfort food classic, can be made in minutes and can be eaten with sweet or savoury additions.

Pizza...obvs Bread? Check. Cheese?

Check. Anything else you could possibly think of?

Supermarkets’ fresh pizzas are a great choice as they use fresh ingredients, make it in front of you with the toppings of your choice, and usually come in a little cheaper than the frozen ones.

‘Mon the mayo WHEN sauce is a stretch but you don’t want your lunch to resemble cardboard sandals, mayonnaise is your best friend.

Creamy but not cream. Cream poured on a sandwich isn’t a delicacy in any part of the world.

Neither is mayonnaise to be fair but it would generally be considered much more socially acceptable.

Don’t restrict it to simple sandwiches though, whack it on the plate with

some fish, chicken, rice or pasta.

There are light, low-fat versions available meaning you can slather some more of it on. That’s how that works, right?

Mix it with tomato sauce to make an easy version of cocktail sauce (as in prawn, not a daiquiri), or mix in some garlic and herbs to recreate the highlight of a takeaway pizza – garlic mayo.

ANY fish whatsoever, even if it’s in the form of a finger. Fish is pure protein with lots of healthy fats in there too.

Tinned tuna, fish fingers and frozen fish are generally cheap. If you want something a lot fresher and tastier, then make like a fish and splash out.

Salmon fillets are affordable if you’re having them now and again and will often be subject to three for two type deals.

Salmon as well as white fish such as sea bass, haddock and cod are easy to cook in a pan, under the grill or foil baked.

Generally healthier than red meats and a good alternative to chicken when you inevitably get bored of it.

Meat your needs Borrowing an American term, cold cuts are basically cold meat you would have in your sandwiches.

We Brits have a tendency to stick with the tried and tested cheese and/or ham.

Branch out and get some salami in your life; likewise, pastrami, pepperoni or chorizo.

Give Subway a run for their money and load your piece with salad and anything else you care to throw on top.

Aim to make it look like something Scooby-Doo would take the time to put together in the basement of a haunted trampoline factory before his mates reveal it was the envious janitor who scared all of those children so that he would become the most powerful and wealthy trampoline magnate in the state of Nebraska, without the interference of cranky old Mr. Melrose.

Herb & spice up your life These will obviously make your meals taste better, but will also make you a better cook.

Learning which herbs and spices go together will ensure you’re never left bored with your options for dinner.

Another plus is that practically all herbs and spices are healthier for you than salt, so you can decrease your intake by seasoning with some alternatives.

Some spices are even said to have some health benefits; helping everything from your cardio-

vascular system to your sinuses. You could even start trying to recreate your favourite restaurant’s seasonings and sauces.

Spices and dried herbs will keep practically forever if stored properly (usually best kept in their original jars in a cupboard).

Milk it Cows are so 2016. Almonds, rice, oats, soy and cashews are where it’s at these days. Although cows’ milk gets talked about as though it is something to give up, these alternative milks can sometimes add something to whatever you are eating or drinking.

Oat milk in coffee can make it extra creamy and velvety. Almond milk with chocolate powder can make it taste like the little green triangles you get in tins of Quality Street.

There’s a reason those crazy doomsday preppers line their underground bunkers with tins of beans.

They last for years, they count as one of your five a day, they have a load of protein, they are veggie, they are vegan and they are filling.

Those doomsday preppers don’t seem so crazy now, do they? Yes, but nevertheless, let’s go with them on the beans thing.

If you feel the need to jazz up your beans and you’re not fighting for survival in a nightmarish post-apocalyptic land, then splash some Worcestershire sauce on them (though they won’t be so veggie at that point) or melt cheese over the top of them on toast for a lunch that would be given the thumbs up by your five-year-old self.

Mexican would consider salsa, anything in a jar or bottle will help add flavour to whatever it is you are cooking.

It’s more just mild, wet redness than salsa a lot of the time but it can still pack a punch and, let’s face it, it’s a bit more interesting than plain old tomato sauce.

You’re not a kid anymore.

Peanut butter is still king but almond butter and even pistachio butter are showing up on supermarket shelves; although both of these alternatives are a bit pricier.

Classic American snacks like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or bagel and peanut butter will keep you fuelled for a long time.

Alternatively, you can use it in a satay-style sauce with chicken or veg.

I am an alcoholic.

Nobody forced a drink down my throat. I didn’t choose to be an alcoholic.

The only reason I knew there was a problem was that I knew that I couldn’t stop drinking.

I was irresponsible, paranoid, angry, fearful, bitter and dishonest.

I would engineer rows with my wife to justify storming out and not coming back.

My head would race, I could see only negatives.

Drink was not my problem – living was.

I treated my condition with alcohol. It worked through university and my burgeoning career.

I had just been head hunted, but at all times I had to drink.

Six months later I was sacked.

I am a lawyer. I did a job for a man who was working with social services. He was sober through AA. He didn’t drink. He could cope. Like the swan on the surface, I looked ok.

Chicken buses, landslides and Tequila adverts... that’s how Haelos roll Lotti Benardout tells all to SUSIE DANIELS...

AELOS LEAD singer Lotti Benardout beats me hands down with the best travel anecdote if ‘best’ means the most dangerous one where you recall risking your life, precariously crossing a slippery slope while clinging to the side of a mountain during a landslide.

Lotti recalls: “I once got caught in a landslide travelling from Mexico to Guatemala.

“I was on a chicken bus with two girlfriends, one was my best friend, and the mud had slid down the mountain.

“It was everywhere and the road was blocked with mud so we had to get out of the bus with our backpacks and climb across the side of a mountain.

“I got halfway through and froze.

My friend was shouting, ‘You have to move Lotti’. There was a line of people trying to get by and I was holding everything up.”

Okay, so Lotti beats me at travel anecdotes. What about party tricks?

Surely my putting everyone at a party to sleep in five seconds flat (by telling my travel anecdotes) beats her hands down? Turns out this girl has been busy.

She also sang on legendary Terrovision song ‘Tequila’ from 1999 that became one of the catchiest tunes of all time.

‘Con Tequila, it makes me happy’.

Lotti enthuses: “I sang in the tequila song. It’s my favourite party trick to sing that. It was such a legendary tune!”

The singer, songwriter (and of course traveller and TV commercial star) has had an incredible experience and ride in the music industry that most bands and artists would kill for.

Having studied Anthropology and Media at the University of Sussex, Lotti landed a dream connection thanks to a friend’s temping job which just happened to be at the legendary bassist, singer-songwriter, producer Trevor Horn’s recording studio.

Lotti was determined to get her foot in that door so came up with a plan.

Lotti recalls: “I came in and was desperate to work there.

“My friend didn’t really care about music so I basically kidded on I was meeting her, sat inside and struck up a conversation with one of the producers.

“I know it’s cheeky and brash but I took his details, emailed him and that really did start me on a path.

“I got a job in there and started a band called Tricky with the producer’s son.

“I really threw myself into it. Madonna came in, The Prodigy came in. It was beyond anything I had dreamed as a kid.

“To get my foot in the door I had to put myself out there.”

And that’s not her only musical connections. While at university Lotti and singer Jessie Ware – back then just a student who shared a love of musical theatre – became friends and lived together.

She recalls: “We met through friends doing musical theatre and we both acted in Little Shop of Horrors.

“She lives very close to me and we’re still in contact. Our lives have gone in different ways and we have quite different music areas.

“I used to hear her voice singing in the flat and it was amazing.”

Lotti’s dream of working in the entertainment industry possibly had more of a chance than your average Joe or Joanne thanks to her family’s experience in the business.

Her grandma wrote jingles in the Fifties for an American radio station, her mum entered the UK in her early twenties on a dance scholarship and her aunt is a singer and music teacher in the US so entertainment really is in the family.

What entertainment legacy, like her mum and grandma’s, does she hope to leave if she ever has kids?

Lotti says: “I hope my kids will be proud of a mum that followed her passion and followed through her dreams to create music she believed in and toured the world with albums that have longevity not just fleeting music.”

Haelos begin a big European tour in October and over the Summer finished a North America tour where they were away for a month in places such as Mexico and appearing at festivals including Coachella.

Lotti says: “There’s something special about being that far away from home. It’s so great.

“It started at south by southwest in Austin, Texas and was such a vibrant adventure. At one point we played nine gigs in four days.

“We went into overdrive. We took a videographer of us touring and released it online.”

The band were signed following the release of their first single, having never gigged with their music.

No traipsing round dingy bars, busking in dirty streets with a begging hat or open musical case hoping for bystanders to toss in more than some loose change.

“I had a choice whether to go down the music college path or something different at university,” recalls Lotti.

“I chose something different and I still met musicians and other people.

I made the right decision though sometimes I’m frustrated I’m not more technical but it helps me break the rules.

“Haelos were all fronts of previous bands so sometimes there was tension and conflict.

“Back in 2014 I’d been working for a while with Dom (Smith) and Arthur (Delaney) had been working separately. Arthur and I met in Dom’s bedroom and wrote Dust. Two months later we were signed!

“Dom sent the music to a few friends of his and it ended up on a blog.

It exploded quite quickly and we were signed never having played music live (as Haelos).

“Our first gig was in Oslo.”

Most of Haelos’s music has a layered effect similar to that of late Eighties/early Nineties electronica, dance band Massive Attack.

It’s a breath of fresh air from the conveyor belt of similar-sounding pop that is churned out every month.

Following their first album and subsequent tour the band experienced different places and cultures and were more outward-looking at the world for their second album Any Random Kindness.

Lotti says: “Our music is being true to ourselves. It’s a collaboration and a lot of creating and destroying.

“We all have to feel connected individually to be happy with our music.

“I think that for this album it (the music) was quite informed. We got signed quickly after the first record.

“We wanted to write about where technology was happening and the age of climate change.

“Political conversations also sparked a lot of ideas. We were interested in the synthesis.

“Our first record had heavy harmonies but this was more upbeat. There was more technology used and more single voices.”

The TV comedy circuit, predominantly made up over the years of upper class Cambridge Footlights-type graduates, now has a fairer representation of all backgrounds.

The comedienne’s extended family has given Suzi enough material to last a lifetime on the subject including her colourful uncle Marty who wonders whether she’s a part or full time lesbian.

Twitter makes me sad but I do have something to say

INTERVIEW Declan Welsh and the Decadent West release their debut album ‘Cheaply Bought, Expensively Sold’ in October. It comments, amongst other things, on consumer culture, the Spanish civil war and existentialism – so not your average run of the mill pop lyrics on relationships.

Frontman and singer-songwriter Declan Welsh is a 26-year-old Law and Philosophy graduate who is clearly well read and versed. He talks philosophy and the ‘difficult phase’ of social media to Susie Daniels...

How would you describe your childhood in East Kilbride?

Really happy! I had a lovely childhood. Can’t claim to have a tortured artist background to help me with lyrics on sadness and depression.

You’re quite politically vocal on your Twitter feed. Did you grow up with a household surrounded by similar views?

No, I wouldn’t say they were political growing up but they are maybe more now through me going on about it so much. I talk about the fact that people need a fair start.

I live in East Kilbride but, in comparison my grandparents are from Royston and the Gorbals. You need to know where you come from. Politically, my family were all labour, but are now more SNP. YOU were self-taught in guitar. Was your family background a musical one?

My mum’s a really good singer and there was music in my family. Mum gave me my first Cure album and my dad likes The Jam and Paul Weller.

Growing up I did stay with my mum, but saw my dad all the time.

I started to play guitar quite late at 14-years-old and was self-taught.

I would sing about the idea of love being difficult and hard. I mean, what did I know about love at 14?

I started towards the end of the first band finding my own voice, writing in my own accent as opposed to vague universal themes.

THE title of your album is Cheaply Bought, Expensively Sold. Great title!

Is this a comment on consumerism?

It’s a line in the song Absurd taken from the first single off the album. It’s got a few meanings. Consumerism, art in a consumer culture.

Even if you’re trying to be true to yourself something will be made for nothing and bought/sold for a lot of money. Historically, you can see the input of art as more than just a product.

Lull’s a great song. It sounds like a Billy Bragg (left-wing activist & singer/songwriter) tuneful rant. Is that a fair assessment?

Yes, I wrote that about not knowing what you’re doing with yourself and not understanding the point of anything.

It’s like an existential crisis. The last

two verses in the song are about leaving something behind (like your music) and would that be enough?

Everyone has doubt and to be completely sure of yourself is a very American thing. Most Scottish artists have imposter syndrome.

IS it important for fans to know from your band name, Declan Welsh and the Decadent West, exactly what you stand for?

It’s just that it goes. The syllables, consonants and vowels just sound right and roll off your tongue. It’s a bit of a tongue-in-cheek reference.

YOU have strong political views and are very vocal on Twitter. Do you worry your views will alienate fans?

My views are fairly informed by compassion. I get frustrated with people.

If my record label told me to stop that would be the end of our relationship but Modern Sky UK know who I was before they signed me so I don’t think that’s going to happen.

Their other artists are The Blinders and they’re very vocal. If you try to pander to people then they’ll know.

If you can make an argument strongly in politics then anger shouldn’t be directed at a group of people such as gays, women, minorities.

If you’re not saying anything then that is a statement.

IS social media a good thing?

Sometimes it can be, such as the Arab Spring, or to promote mental health issues but social media is probably a negative thing.

Twitter makes me anxious and sad.

If compassion is meant to govern then Twitter is not a nice place to be.

It’s going to have a serious impact on psychology but hopefully this is just the difficult phase (it’s going through).

What is ‘So It Goes’ about?

It’s about Kurt Vonnegut who wrote the novel Slaughterhouse-Five. I loved the book so I wrote about that.

Some of my lyrics are about the Spanish civil war. I write about whatever I care about.

I’ve also written about a friend of mine who passed away and one song I wrote about my mate who came out.

YOU’re Prime Minister for the day.

What do you do?

I’d immediately sort out social

housing, for example private landlords leaving thousands of flats sitting free.

I would take that off those big companies to make it available housing for everyone. I would sort out certain rights and enforce a social and economic right to a house.

I used to be on the board of the charity Children in Scotland. I would fix child poverty in the UK and make sure all schools have free meals without having to hand in a ticket and I’d offer after-school clubs with free meals so all children get a second meal of the day.

YOU have references to Simone de Beauvior, Jean-Paul Sartre, Karl Marx and Angela Davis in The Dream. At what age did you start reading their work?

I did the usual (philosophy) journey.

Someone gives you Animal Farm and that makes you think of politics.

At Strathclyde University I studied Law and two of my friends had leftist literature.

WHY music and not further your career with your degree in Law or Philosophy (Masters at Strathclyde University)?

I left school and didn’t think I’ll do anything with music. With Law I really enjoyed the theory side of it. While studying Law I did the music thing again and thought ‘I’ll make a go of this’. I owed it to myself to give it a go.

It doesn’t matter that I’m now playing music instead of pursuing Philosophy, it (philosophy) informs what you write about by just thinking about why you’re here and what makes you tick.

WHAT’S more important, getting your message or music out there?

I’d probably be very arrogant to say the world needs my message. I think it’s more important to get music out there. As long as we (the band) are at the end of the album, I love it. You don’t need anything to change to react if you make something you love.

Tell us something good that’s happening or happened in your life recently I’m moving in with my girlfriend and I finished my Masters in Philosophy!

The Amazons

Hunkered down into British hard rock, The Amazons grasp tightly onto the identity of being a guitar band.

The indecisive straddling between being a modern band and one that nods back to the garage rock of the 2000s or Britpop in the 90s can at times leave them sounding a little behind the times and anonymous rather than retro or vintage.

That being said, they offer an accessible entry point to the world of long-haired, vest-wearing, general rock in a time where things are a little more moustachioed and craft beer-fuelled.

The Tallest Man on Earth ONE more gentle balladeer here in Sweden’s Kristian Matsson AKA The Tallest Man on Earth.

Matsson arms himself with an acoustic guitar to channel his obviously Dylan-inspired tunes.

More contemporary artists that Matsson finds himself grouped with include Ben Howard and Mumford and Sons. I Love You. It’s a Fever Dream is The Tallest Man on Earth’s latest album, including the singles The Running Styles of New York and I’m a Stranger Now. Fun fact: the actual tallest man in the world is Sultan Kosen, a Turkish farmer.

Probably not as good a songwriter though.

Lewis Capaldi Barely a month goes by without us mentioning Lewis Capaldi. With his seemingly never-ending TV appearances and his uniquely insightful social media posts regarding fame, fortune and life on the road, it would be easy to forget that Capaldi is a mighty fine young songwriter with a fantastic voice that belies his age.

His debut album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent spawned several singles including Bruises, Lost on You and Someone You Loved, the latest seemingly being played on a loop by several radio stations.

Primed for taking a step, or leap, up to the next level, Capaldi has it in him to become a huge name all over the world.

For now though, he is still able to make it back home for the Christmas holiday period.

Tom Walker It’s been a busy 12 months for Tom Walker, with his single ‘Leave a Light On’ propelling him onto several playlists and into the charts.

He was also named Best Breakthrough Act at the 2019 Brit Awards. Born in Scotland and raised by Glaswegian parents, Walker flits between Scottish and English accents, his Scottish vernacular becoming more prominent when spending time in the country of his birth.

Arguably the most Scottish thing he has done is collaborate with Red Hot Chilli Pipers as they covered ‘Leave a Light On’.

He will be looking to become a mainstay in the charts, emulating the likes of Rag ‘n’ Bone Man and George Ezra. l Edinburgh Corn Exchange, Nov 10.

Emeli Sande Emeli Sande, real name Adele (that must’ve been annoying) emerged at the beginning of the decade having been a writer for several other artists.

Since coming to prominence, she has worked with the likes of Tinie Tempah, Professor Green, Gucci Mane and Giggs.

Born in the north of England and growing up in Aberdeen, Sande has weaved her way into becoming a household name up and down the country.

Having been quiet recently, she will look to explode back into the public consciousness with the aid of this tour and the featuring of her song Extraordinary Being in blockbuster X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

The Armadillo provides a sizeable space but one less cavernous than close neighbour The Hydro. l Edinburgh Usher Hall November 17.

Rodrigo Y Gabriela

Experience the exhilarating fusion of flamenco, classical, jazz and heavy metal guitar with Mexican duo Rodrigo Y Gabriela.

Years ago, the couple decided to move from Mexico City to Dublin in an attempt to learn English and showcase their unique musical style.

Now, Rodrigo Y Gabriela play to thousands of people each night and have played the legendary Hollywood Bowl.

Despite the fingerpicking and strumming of the guitars offering a sound that is most recognisable as flamenco, the blazing pace is punctuated and broken into riffs akin to that of Metallica, one of their biggest influences.

Having covered Pink Floyd’s Echoes in its entirety earlier in the year, Rodrigo Y Gabriela showcase their first album in five years, 9 Dead Alive. l Glasgow o2 Academy, September 26.

Kodaline Providing the soundtrack for countless adverts, films and TV shows, Kodaline have a knack for creating joyous indie-pop tracks.

Fans of Grey’s Anatomy, The Fault in Our Stars and Gogglebox will recognise some of their songs.

Despite superstardom having escaped them so far, Kodaline have been going strong for over a decade (changing name from 21 Demands to Kodaline in 2012).

The fact they straddle pop and indie will see all ages and appearances show up at

their upcoming o2 Academy gig in Glasgow.
