New Jersey State League of Master Plumbers, Inc.

PIPELINE

The Largest State League of Master Plumbers In The Nation

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

We’ve had a couple outstanding events over the past couple months. Thank you again for the participation at Resorts Casino for our holiday party.

We still need more participation though to bring in new opinions and ideas to our leadership group. Our heaviest burden right now is membership. We need to understand how to attract more members into our league. I expect to see growth in the trades with the changes in the job market, So we need to understand what we can offer these new license holders and small business owners to attract their membership. Education? Mentorship? And Business management?

We need to find new ways to attract and show them what we offer. We need to find new means and methods to get them to our meetings and events. We need to find ways to make our bylaws work for us, not against us, because what we have been doing in the past is becoming obsolete. We need our younger members to get involved to assure our future success. We are a nonprofit organization, The rules and tax needs have to be reviewed by nonprofit experts before we commit to bylaws that are going to come back to haunt us.

As always have a nice day!!

Thank you,

First Year Vice President Report

Fellow professionals and tradespeople, I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year with your families and friends and are ready to gear up for theWinter months to follow. I have heard we should expect a cold and snowy February.

Regarding our free educational classes. These classes are open to all members along with your employees and apprentices. This month’s class will be hosted by Dellon Sales . I hope to see you all there; January 17 th from 6:00 to 8:30 for our first one back! As always, gratitude goes out to Anthony LaMorgia and CPR Restoration for the facility along with all of the members of our association and committee assisting us throughout this process. Another special thanks to Vinny Tinervia, our 3rd year VP and Mark Bleiweis our 2nd year VP , who have been instrumental in putting together these classes. I urge everyone to our class and see some of the things this great organization has to offer.

I would like to remind everyone again to utilize the new NJSLMP.COM website, that is live and running with great resources for members. Everything from local to state associations and events are available for your convenience. Make sure to make an account if you have not already been able to gain access.

Second Year Vice President Report

Our monthly meeting went well . There’s a lot of discussion going on about a bill paid by the state league for the students at the triboro meeting. I was the one who started this problem by saying that the state should pay for the future of our trade with the apprentices program. I’ve been informed that we didn’t follow our by-laws and that the state league isn’t required to pay. I’m sorry I feel this is wrong. I feel that the unanimous vote at that meeting it was a done deal. I was wrong and apologize to the couple of members I offered.. I know we are checking thru our lawyer if there’s away to by pass the bylaws but if not as I originally stated I would pay personally. I now have many who will split the approximate bill of $1000.00. if we’re told that it has to be payed at our February meeting, you have my word it will be paid that night!!!. A resolution will be written hopefully to prevent this in the future so not to rustle any ones feathers. Holidays are over, I’m available to meet with any association to discuss there concerns.

God Bless,

Mark Bleiweis, 2nd Year VP (732) 686-7415 • bleiweisplumbing@gmail.com

“Miner Work” By Dimitri Checkur

I live in Miner Country. Let’s be clear…that’s Sussex County. Morris County CLAIMS they had more Mines than we did, but that was all just Pokin’ and Hopin’! When you know WHERE to dig your hole, you don’t have to keep Digging new ones! We have the Baseball Team…they have a Sinkhole on Rt. 80! Anyway, we ALL mined Ore! Iron, Copper, Zinc, Manganese and even Fluorescent Minerals. Ogdensburg once had one of the richest Mines in the WORLD! For those of you who are still in the dark, I’m talking about Plumbing! Minerals for Steel, Galvanized, Ductile Iron, Brass Pipe and Fittings (made from Copper and Zinc) all came out of NJ Mines. But first, Plumbers had to help go down and get it. Gases, Water, Pumps, Makeup Air and Vents all drove a Mine. We couldn’t Mine that Ore without Plumbing knowledge. Yes, we did some Major work back then; but not the hardest part. I don’t say this often, but Miners worked much harder than Plumbers. Men and Children immigrated from all over the World to try to find a better life. They did excruciating work and took great risks to make their Bosses rich. They would NEVER hire a Pex Miner! It was ALL work…it was Miner work!

Fortunately, life is a breath of fresh air today. Miners are long gone, but Plumbers are busier than ever! WE have Minor work now. N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.17A. The world was built so well, we can still fix things that exist…if we can get the parts. Or we can slap and scrap; cut out all that Cast-Iron and Galvanized, and shoe-horn in some plastic. Solid-State Appliances and Roughing-in additions to a Plumbing system is easy than ever too. Heck, we can Press in a ‘His and Hers’ Dog Wash before 18 Holes of Golf on a Tuesday. When it’s straightforward, we don’t need some Pit Boss looking over our shoulder either. WE own the Mine now, baby!!

So what exactly is 2.17A asking for? First, a simple verbal or written notice to the Municipality to let them know what’s going on. Then, dropping off a Permit within 5 Days. Soon, we’ll even have Electronic Permit submissions. Generally, it’s like for like, without changes to Domestic Water or Drainage Sizes. Also, Gas can be deadly…ask the Canary. Follow your IRC/IMC/IFGC Code requirements for that work. Since Homeowners can’t find a Plumber anymore, we can finally charge a decent rate. Can life get ANY easier! That’s Minor work! We’ve struck Gold!

Minor work is an excellent concept to keep Professionals moving. Minor rules…but be careful. When someone, Licensed or not, incorrectly tells a Homeowner they don’t NEED a Permit, our Trade caves in. It’s harder for the Plumbers who are doing things right, and easier for all the HIC Contractors. Minor work is an opportunity. It’s a Minor dialogue between the Plumber, Inspector and Homeowner on a small job about the importance of our process. An Inspector needs to respectfully explain why they’re requiring something, and a Plumber needs to be able to have an honest conversation about their approach and choice of materials. Working together will save our Trade. Minor details. Also, a little visual oversight at the end of the job doesn’t mean since they won’t see it, don’t bother testing it. We’re Masters! Our work gets done without Licenses or Permits because almost anyone can buy a tool with a Trigger these days. It’s dangerous! Set yourself apart. Help People understand, put them at ease, and board-up this whole Permit confusion thing once and for all. Minor Communication.

If we keep digging, we have a deeper problem. Mines are Finite. For Hundreds of Years, Sussex County had Mining and Farming. We still have Farms. Axe yourself…where DID the Miners go? We’re all expendable. Farmers and Miners worked equally as hard, but owners looked at the World differently. Mine Owners wanted to take everything they could get. It was a ‘cash-grab’. Farmers know resources are precious, and preservation will sustain them for a Lifetime. Their approach is to nurture…give something to the Earth, and it will keep giving back. For our Trade to survive, Plumbers better start thinking like Farmers.

My Uncle Fred (Pete) Kirk grew up in Ogdensburg, and was one of the last actual Miners. He was an Electrician (a fairly tough Trade), and if you take a Tour, his name is on a Locker in the Museum there. When Sterling Hill Mine closed, he milled his own Hemlocks, built his own house, did Electrical work and started Farming. He never ran out of resources. What about Us? Over the next Decade, all Trades will see attempts by others to fleece parts of our Professions and Codes. 2.17A was a gift of less oversight for Professionals. Those who developed it trusted we’d make a Major commitment. Rt. 80 is a dark reminder of what our Future could become. The Mine Owners probably bought an Island somewhere, and we own a commuting disaster! Watch, the Taxpayers of New Jersey will end up getting an even bigger Shaft! Brothers, I see Two Holes. We can simply profit, or we can each plant something that will grow our Profession for Generations. So when you cut out that old Galvanized or Cast-Iron Drainage, be thankful for how hard those Miners worked to get it for us…and when you do your own Minor work, ask yourself, “What kind of hole will I be digging Today?” Now let’s Play Ball!

Continuing Education Report

Happy New Year,

First, I want to wish every member a very happy and healthy New Year. Live every day to the fullest.

I have sent the letter to each association regarding the requirements for getting reimbursed for costs in hosting a Continuing Education class. If anyone has any questions after receiving the letter feel free to reach out to me. My email and phone number are on the letter.

I forwarded the letter to our State League secretary, and our pipeline chairman. I would like any association that has scheduled their class to forward me the date, location and instructors. I also want a list of non-members and hopefully their email, so that I can reach out to them and try to get them to be a member. This also helps offset some costs of the class.

I am looking forward to a smooth educational season of classes. I will sending an email to all our instructors in the State League. Anyone planning on teaching m ust be registered with the board of master plumbers. If any instructor needs the syllabus, please reach out to me.

Thank you,

Expand your expertise and boost your resume with the IAPMO Backflow Prevention Institute’s Cross-Connection Control Training. Each course concludes with an American Society of Sanitary Engineering (ASSE) certification exam. These ASSE certifications adhere to the ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 5000 Professional Qualification Standard, recognized across all three model plumbing codes in the United States, including the Uniform Plumbing Code.

Don’t miss out—register today! Call 1-855-536-2800 or visit www.iapmo.org/bpi/training-certification.

At this forty (40) hour training, participants will be presented with the guidelines used for acceptable practices of testing backflow prevention assemblies. The participants will also learn the principles of cross-connection control and the methods and devices used to prevent backflow of undesirable substances into water distribution and plumbing systems carrying potable water. Upon completion of the course, the participants will receive sufficient information and skills to pass the American Society of Sanitary Engineering (ASSE) Examination. On the last day of the training the certification examination will be administered. This consists of a written examination and a hands-on examination. The exam for an initial tester certification consists of 100 questions. Presently, the initial certification candidate must demonstrate the field test procedure for a reduced pressure principle assembly, double check valve assembly, pressure vacuum breaker assembly, and spill-resistant vacuum breakers without notes or assistance.

This class will provide renewal for Tester, Surveyor, and Repairer. At this eight (8) hour training, participants will review the guidelines used for acceptable practices of testing backflow prevention devices. The participants will receive the information and skills to help them pass the American Society of Sanitary Engineering (ASSE) Recertification Examination. At the end of the training the re-certification examination will be administered. This consists of a written and a hands-on examination. This training is mandatory in order for the tester to re-certify under ASSE general guidelines. The exam for the re-certification consists of 25 questions. Presently, the re-certification candidate must demonstrate the field test procedure for a reduced pressure principle assembly, double check valve assembly, pressure vacuum breaker assembly, and spill-resistant vacuum breaker assembly without notes or assistance.

Happy New Year,

I am writing this letter to inform each association of the requirements to get reimbursed for your CE class done by the State League. The following must be done, or you will not be reimbursed:

1) I need a voucher sent to me as Chairman of the CE Committee to approve for the instructors. Each instructor gets paid $500 by the association, then gets money back from the State League. I need a copy sent to me via email, which is at the top of letter, to approve or you will not receive money.

2) I need a list of non-members who attended so we know how much money we collected to offset any costs of the class. If you can, get an email so I can reach out to them and discuss with them possibly joining the league.

3) I need a copy of the receipt from the venue for the association to get compensated for the venue. Each association gets $400 back. If you can, try and get a sponsor for the meeting.

4) A copy of the roster must be kept for five years by the sponsor/instructor. I need a copy emailed to me also.

5) All this must be done or there will be no reimbursement.

We will be doing the One Hour for HVAC, but I am still waiting to get confirmation from the board. I need to be notified of when you are having your class and the names of your instructors. This information can be emailed to me as I would like to keep a current list in Pipeline and in the supply houses. If an association needs an instructor, please reach out to me and I will get you one. I would appreciate if you get all this information to all your members. Associations that are already booked through me, do not worry about any of this as we take care of it.

I am looking forward to a successful season of classes over the next six months. Thank you for your cooperation.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the NJSLMP will be held on February 6, 2025, and is being hosted by the Paterson Master Plumbers Association.
