What is +Culture Shots?

Culture Shots is a week-long series of free events, bringing art and culture into the hospital environment.

Find out why culture works and how the expertise within Manchester’s cultural institutions can be used to improve professional practice as well as patient and staff’s personal health and well being.

We want to inspire individuals to get talking and thinking about culture in a new way.

It’s for people who have experienced grief, and for people who haven’t. This Grief Thing opens up conversations about grief and makes it visible.

The Whitworth and Manchester Museum, University of Manchester The Whitworth has a long and successful history of working with local communities, such as health service providers, older people in residential and care homes, and adults and children with mental health issues. Working closely with artists, museum and health professionals, together we can make a vital contribution to greater Manchester’s health.

We have a series of ongoing arts, health and wellbeing programmes that run throughout the year.

Coffee, Cake and Culture, the Whitworth Making culture accessible for anyone living with a physical or mental health need, and their families. We offer free gallery visits fully supported by artists and volunteers. It allows participants to share experiences thought meaningful and stimulating activity. Creative Writing for Carers, Manchester Museum Join us in a series of creative writing workshops related to the Manchester Museum collection to explore the benefits of creativity to health and wellbeing. Mindfulness for Schools, Mindful Mark Making, for all key stages, the Whitworth Practicing mindfulness techniques are recognised as positive ways to improve wellbeing, stress levels and our overall mental health. Through simple exercises, this workshop will focus on the here and now. Through close observation of artworks and mindful mark making techniques we will use the Whitworth’s exhibitions and outside spaces for inspiration.

ENGAGE, the Whitworth, 13 – 14 November Engage is the lead advocacy and training network for gallery education.

ENGAGE will explore the intersection between arts, health, wellbeing and education. Hosted by the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, a centre for excellence in arts and health. We invite educators, curators, researchers, artists and policymakers to discuss the immense diversity of approaches to arts and health in current practice. This Grief Thing is a project that invites people to think, talk and learn about grief. It takes place in a series of shops where people can have conversations, and buy clothing and objects. It’s for people who have experienced grief, and for people who haven’t.

We’re living at a time when many people find death and grief – our own grief or other people’s – almost impossible to talk about.

We don’t know what to say, what to do, or how to act. So we stay silent, we pretend that grief doesn’t exist, or we hide it.

Maggie’s Centre Manchester Maggie’s offers free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their families and friends. Help is offered freely to anyone with any type of cancer. Artist in Residence, Lucy Burscough, has been creating paintings in residence at the Maggie’s Centre Manchester, at The Christie Hospital and at Central Manchester NHS Foundation Trust.

Facing Out is a project that celebrates people who have experienced facial cancer and reconstructive surgery. This project explores the impact of acquired facial disfigurement from head, face and neck cancers and their treatments. The portraits explore and illustrate the identities of the sitters beyond their role as ‘patient’ or ‘one who is disfigured’.

The paintings will be produced in public following Lucy’s model of art production as performance, delivered as a wellbeing activity with the intention of creating challenging and ambitious artworks and inspiring stimulating and enlightening conversation.

The Project is a partnership between artist Lucy Burscough, the Maggies Centre, the Whitworth and Manchester Museum.

Collaborators include Tim Blackburn; Consultant Oral Maxillo-Facial/Head & Neck/Facial Plastic Surgeon at Central Manchester NHSFT and his patients; The Christie Hospital; the Whitworth; Manchester Museum; medical anthropologist, Dr. Anne-Marie Martindale; and Manchester Science Festival.

The project culminates in a temporary collection centre exhibition at the Whitworth, opening in February 2019.

The Christie and 100 Voices The Christie is the largest single site cancer centre in Europe, treating more than 44,000 patients a year. The Christie is launching a new project about reflecting on and sharing experiences of cancer.

It is often difficult for people who experience cancer to come to terms with the diagnosis, even in the long term. It’s a lot to process and sometimes it may feel as if there simply isn’t enough time to take it all in. Patients and carers become one of our 100 Voices. Each voice were asked their experience of cancer using only one word. The project is in collaboration with The Christie Charity and the Whitworth.

Finding one word to describe your experience of cancer might feel like a rather daunting task, but our ‘voices’ will be guided by an experienced person who has also been affected by cancer, who will share their experiences with participants in a small group and help them arrive at their chosen word.

They use a number of techniques including performance, poetry and drawing during the course of the sessions. One of the participants from the pilot said ‘the 100 Voices session was the most profound, useful and calming experience I’ve had during my cancer recovery – and the impact of it has been long lasting.”

The project is a collaboration between the Christie Charity and the Whitworth. The final artwork will be displayed in the Christie Hospital.

Dance for Parkinson’s English National Ballet’s Dance for Parkinson’s programme extends unique opportunities to people living with Parkinson’s, their carers, friends and family, to engage in creative dance activity to live music led by professional artists.

The dance sessions are fun and expressive and explore the themes, choreography and music from the ballets.

Join us on Wednesdays at the Whitworth from the 3 April – 5 June, 2-4pm.

Manchester Institution for Arts, Health & Social Change The Manchester Institute for Arts, Health & Social Change (MIAHSC) is a collective of people and organisations who are committed to improving public health and addressing inequalities and the factors that under-pin them: locally, nationally and globally.

MIAHSC will bring together and support a community of citizens, artists, curators, educators, health and care professionals and activists alongside international experts and leading researchers working across the field of arts, health & social change to reframe the power of culture and the arts. In November 2018 it will publish The Manchester Declaration which articulates the aspirations of diverse communities across Greater Manchester.

Live Well Make Art Live Well Make Art (LWMA) is an informal network of arts professionals and activists, health professionals and activists, academics, and people who care passionately about the health of Greater Manchester. We have been working together for two years as a social movement.

We want a healthier Greater Manchester, where all its people can share the benefits of engaging in and enjoying the arts and creative activities with each other, and we want to make our streets, neighbourhoods and communities better places to live. LWMA has received funding from GMCA, through its Great Places initiative, for a programme of work over the next 18 months.

We’ve been meeting around the themes of building social connections through the arts; arts and healthier working; motherhood, early years and arts. Our next event will be in March 2019 and is timed to coincide with the World Health Congress, which is coming to Manchester.
