At Stephenson College we can design and provide bespoke courses to meet your company’s specific requirements. We also provide both certificated and noncertificated training programmes.

Case Study - BSI We were approached by the company to deliver a bespoke gas course for a group of Test Engineers. This enabled the engineers to gain an understanding of some of the basic principles behind the work that they carry out on domestic gas appliances.

The programme was agreed following an initial meeting between college Gas Trainers and the head of the training at BSI. This led to college staff refining the standard ACS training to meet the specific needs of the company.

The course included: Tightness testing and purging, gas safety controls, basic gas pipe work including; practical pipe bending, soldering and pipe sizing, combustion and flues. This gave the engineers a basic understanding of how appliances should work and what can cause the appliances to work incorrectly.

This enabled their engineers to test the appliances more thoroughly and enable them to make better informed decisions concerning the safety of the appliance on test.

BPEC DOMESTIC GAS FOUNDATION COURSE Course Level 3 What qualifications or experience do I need?

You will need to be working with a Gas Safe registered engineer to build your portfolio.

Category 2 - You must have several years industry experience to enter this course at this level or hold a Plumbing NVQ2 or equivalent.

How will I learn?

Category 3 - You do not need any experience to enter this course.

Through a combination of practical and theoretical activities and visual materials.

How long is the course?

2 nights per week for up to 33 weeks.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will be by practical and theoretical testing.

City and Guilds; Electrical Installation 236, 2361, 2351or 2330 or EAL Domestic Electrical Installers Certificate (Part P) Level 2.

1 day a week for 4 weeks or 1 evening/week for 10 weeks.

Scope Definition, General Characteristics, Protection for Safety, Selection and Erection, Inspection and Testing & Special Locations.

Trainees must hold a recognised trade qualification and a minimum CCN1 and CENWAT1 certificate. A working knowledge of central heating systems is essential. This course is for experienced plumbing and heating installers.

The City & Guilds 2394 or EAL Level 3 Awards are designed for candidates that have some experience working with electrical installations of new installations and circuits. Ideally holding the 17th Edition Wiring Regulations and Level 3 electrical qualification.

ELECTRICITY FOR PLUMBERS

The City & Guilds 2395 or EAL Level 3 awards are designed for practicing electricians who require further training in the inspection and testing of existing installations. An electrical qualification and 17th Edition certificate is required to attend this course.

How long is the course?

1 day per week for 5 weeks or 1 evening a week for 10 weeks.

What will I learn?

You will learn the following through both tutor led theoretical and practical sessions: • Requirements of 17th Edition Wiring Regulations for inspection, testing and certification • Using Guidance Note 3 and Determine suitability of installations • Inspection and compliance with relevant legislation • Order of tests, use of test equipment and testing procedures and test result verification • Continuity of protective conductors, insulation resistance tests, polarity and earth electrode tests and earth fault loop impedance tests How will I learn?

IRTEC Institute of Road Transport Engineers Certification (irtec) Irtec is recognition of an individual’s current competence, and their commitment to an ethical code of conduct in the commercial vehicle, trailer and passenger carrying vehicle industries. (over 7.5 tons). An irtec licence is based on current competence and expires after five years.

Service Maintenance Technician candidates should ideally be in full time employment with at least two years experience in heavy vehicle maintenance and repair.

Inspection Technician candidates must be able to work unsupervised, and ideally, should be in full time employment with at least three years experience to ensure they are familiar with the skills, knowledge and techniques associated with vehicle inspection.

The subject matter covered was very varied but all relevant to our trade and environments. The time allotted for the multiple choice test was ample and allowed plenty of time to recheck answers and amend before submitting the completed test. As expected 'Health and Safety' and 'Safe Working Practices' were heavily featured throughout and failure to comply almost certainly means you will fail the course.

The two instructors were well trained, informative and very helpful and created a calm relaxed atmosphere with plenty of banter. Attendees are required to take boots, overalls and a pen, everything else was supplied by the college.

Accommodation at the local 'Premier Inn' was clean, quiet and comfortable with pleasant staff, and food was of a good standard from the 'Brewers Fair' attached to the hotel.

ATA AIR CONDITIONING (f-gas)

The ATA Air Conditioning course is intended for technicians whose job role involves the maintenance and repair or accident repair (MET role or similar) of light vehicles and will have contact with vehicle Air Conditioning systems during their work activities.

Anyone who handles refrigerant from a vehicle air-conditioning system is required to hold a f-gas Handler Licence. This is also enforceable by DEFRA. What qualifications or experience do I need?

The technician must be able to work unsupervised.

They should ideally be in full time employment with at least three months experience to ensure they are familiar with the skills, knowledge and techniques required to recover and recharge vehicle Air Conditioning systems.

They should also be familiar with the legislation that applies to the use of refrigerants (f-gas) used in the automotive industry.

How long is the course?

• Carrying visual checks of the vehicle AC system to inspect for any defect prior to connecting AC equipment • Purging AC equipment free from refrigerant pre and post recovery • Using the correct methods to recover refrigerant • Carrying out AC evacuation procedures • Selecting the correct refrigerant type and refrigerant quantity for a specific vehicle • Selecting the correct type/volume of AC system oil for a specific vehicle • Charging a vehicles AC system without loss of refrigerant to the atmosphere • Disconnecting AC equipment from vehicle without loss of refrigerant and damage to the vehicle and its systems • Checking for AC refrigerant leaks post recharging including from the AC service port connectors • Correctly storing equipment after completion of task

INTRODUCTION TO WELDING PROCESS MIG (METAL INERT GAS)

The ATA Diagnostic Technician route is intended for technicians whose job role involves the diagnostics of faults on light vehicles.

There are no formal qualifications required.

Technicians should be working on light vehicles and ideally have at least three years experience, to ensure they are familiar with the skills, knowledge and techniques required to diagnose and rectify system faults; including replacing components and returning the vehicle systems to manufacturer specification

What makes a good weld, common problems and corrections, demonstration to show machine adjustment, guidance in correct weld pool and travel speed. What adjustments to make for different material thicknesses demonstrated on 3mm, 6mm and 10mm materials.

Demonstration of three joints, outside corner, tee fillet, butt joint and their uses in maintenance applications, control of torch position and settings in achieving good fusion.

Completion Produce three joints, demonstrate the use of control through adjusting settings, explain visual inspection of welds. Each candidate will be asked questions relating to correct set up, safe practice and what pre-cautions should be used to protect others whilst welding work is being carried out.

Week Three: Demonstration of three joints, outside corner, tee fillet, butt joint. Welding torch position, correction procedures and adjusting settings.

Week Four: Produce three joints; demonstrate the use of control through adjusting settings, explain visual inspection of welds, and look at next stage.
